Story route, potion planning, village cleanup, and achievements

Little Witch in the Woods is gentle on the surface, but its progression can become messy if you treat every day like a random foraging trip. The main story asks Ellie to clear prickly vine cores, restore Wisteria, learn new recipes, open new regions, and build enough village systems that the game eventually turns into a cozy checklist of maps, encyclopedia ranks, friendships, cats, deliveries, and currency goals.

This guide is written for players who want a practical route without spoiling every line of dialogue. It covers the verified story order from the prologue through Green Forest, Cloud Valley, and Starlit Cave, then explains the cleanup habits that make the 61 Steam achievements far less painful.

Your witch hut is the center of the loop: sleep, craft, store materials, check recipes, then head back into the woods.

Before You Rush The Story

The safest way to play is to keep a small working stock of common materials instead of selling everything. Most blockers are not combat checks; they are recipe, tool, or timing checks. If a quest asks for a potion, candy, furniture piece, or restored building, the slow part is usually gathering the extracts and visiting the right villager at the right time.

Habit Why it helps
Process materials in pairs Many extracts and candy ingredients use two raw items, so pairs keep your bag cleaner.
Carry Weed Exterminating and Nutrition potions These clear common exploration blockers and save repeated trips back to the hut.
Use slow movement near creatures Cautious bugs and animals can flee if Ellie runs straight at them.
Check the map for NPC positions Villagers move through their daily schedules; the map prevents wasted wandering.
Keep recipes and tools activated New recipes, the broom, bug net, and other tools may need to be used from inventory before they are available.
Do not overbuy Witch Chalk early Beginner references and community notes both point out that useful chalk can be found while exploring.

Main Story Route

The route below keeps the story readable without turning the guide into a line-by-line transcription. Use it as a checklist when you lose track of what the game expects next.

Stage Main goal Important unlocks
Prologue Leave the train, find the witch hut, repair the workplace loop, and clear the first path blockers. Witch hut, workplace, extractor bottle, Weed Exterminating Potion, Curse-lifting Candy, Healing Candy.
Act 1: Green Forest Investigate the ruined village, find the first prickly vine core, bring Kyla back, restore Roy’s house, repair the temple, restore the fountain, and repair the witch house. Kyla, Roy, village restoration, Moon Tears, Dream Recollection Potion, Firecracker Potion, fishing, house upgrades.
Act 2: Cloud Valley Repair the bridge, explore Cloud Valley, solve mushroom/weight/fog puzzles, clear the second core, and continue rebuilding Wisteria. Cloud Valley map, new candy recipes, more villagers, Cloud Valley encyclopedia pages.
Act 3: Starlit Cave Open the route to Starlit Cave, solve light, bell, block, and laboratory puzzles, clear the third core, and finish the village return arc. Starlit Cave map, late-game potions, final village residents, Starlit Cave encyclopedia pages.
Cleanup Finish mapping, S-tier encyclopedia work, Ritoring gifts, cats, deliveries, affection, house/furniture goals, and currency achievements. Most long-tail achievements and collection rewards.

Prologue Walkthrough

The opening teaches the full game loop in miniature. After the train stops, follow the path into Green Forest, examine the strange tree, and eventually reach the abandoned witch hut. Once Ellie can use the workplace, clean up the hut and learn the first important lesson: potions and candies need processed extracts, not just raw materials.

Your first major blocker is ordinary vegetation. Brew the Weed Exterminating Potion from the early materials provided around the workplace, then use it to clear the path. When you meet Aurea under a curse, brew the Curse-lifting Candy and bring it back. This sequence unlocks the practical loop of finding a problem, checking the encyclopedia or recipe, processing ingredients, then returning with the correct item.

When Rubrum is caught in the web, collect Maple Herb from the cliff route and return to free him. After that, the game asks for Healing Candy. Finish that step before pushing deeper into the forest. The prologue ends by clearing the stronger prickly vines that block the route toward Wisteria Village.

Act 1: Green Forest And Wisteria

Act 1 is the densest part of the early game because it introduces village restoration, cat-god lore, recipe purchases, and several puzzle spaces. The short version is simple: investigate Wisteria, identify the vine core, make the right potions, restore key buildings, and keep talking to Enite, Kyla, Roy, Aurea, Diane, Arden, and Rubrum whenever the story stalls.

Investigate The Village

After entering Wisteria, inspect Kyla’s ruined house and speak with the remaining residents. Return to the witch hut and check the bookshelf when the quest points you toward old information. The village is blocked by more than surface vines; you need to locate and destroy the core that feeds them.

Prepare For The Vine Core

Buy needed recipes from Diane instead of guessing. For this phase, expect to use Nutrition-style plant recovery, an intellect or memory-related potion chain, and Moon Tears. The exact cauldron requirements are shown in-game once you own the recipe, so the important planning move is to gather extra forest basics before leaving: Squishychub Fur, Witchflower, Maple Herb, Pumpkin Terrier materials, Bird Flower materials, and night-only flower or spider materials when the recipe asks for them.

When a story potion appears, buy the recipe first, then let the cauldron and encyclopedia guide the exact ingredient processing.

Blue And Red Chalk Puzzle Logic

The Green Forest core route sends you through sigil and chalk gates. The rule to remember is that chalk color changes what route or mechanism Ellie can access. If a puzzle room seems solved but the route is still blocked, you probably missed the matching chalk interaction or a lever state. Do not burn through potions randomly; check the gate, return to the marked sigil, and look for the route that lets you bring the correct effect back to the core.

Bring Kyla Back

Once the first core problem is handled, use the village quest chain to send for Kyla. She becomes the restoration bottleneck for several later tasks, so talk to her whenever a building project appears. Rebuilding work often requires a blueprint, a pile of basic materials, and waiting until the next day.

Restore Roy’s House And The Temple

Roy’s house leads into the Dream Recollection sequence. When Ellie has the strange dream keyword, ask Diane about it, buy the recipe, brew the potion, and follow the dream route. For the temple restoration, expect to carry stones, feed Kyla the required candy, speak with residents for clues, then solve a waterway or planet-style puzzle connected to the cat gods. If the temple puzzle refuses to advance, re-check both stone clues before moving the planets or drinking the associated potion.

Repair The Fountain

The fountain is the Act 1 capstone. Kyla asks for a large batch of basic restoration materials. Community and walkthrough references consistently point to big stacks of wood, stone, and mud at this phase, so start saving those before the quest appears. After the repair request, speak with Diane for the celebration-related Firecracker Potion recipe and follow the game’s single-use crafting requirement.

Fishing becomes available around this part of the story. Use it early, because fish matter later for cats, stamina recovery, and long-tail collection work.

Act 2: Cloud Valley Route

Cloud Valley begins after the village bridge project. Talk to Kyla, check in with the residents, and use the flower shop or blueprint steps the quest asks for. Once the route opens, collect gears while using lifts, because the region uses more mechanical puzzle logic than Green Forest.

The second core route includes mushroom mechanisms, weight transfer, dandelion board movement, fog clearing, colored chalk, and a creature who needs a recovered doll. The clean approach is to open every shortcut as you go, keep one extra movement or fog-related potion if the recipe permits it, and solve each puzzle by asking what object must cross the gap: a weight, a board, a spring, or Ellie herself.

Diane’s new-location candy requests are worth doing before you leave Cloud Valley for too long. They push you to collect the area’s common life forms and unlock more recipes. That overlaps with achievements for the Cloud Valley encyclopedia, rare creatures, and later candy S-ranks.

Act 3: Starlit Cave Route

Official Steam screenshot of Ellie exploring a glowing cave area
Starlit Cave is puzzle-heavy. Treat each chamber as a light, pressure, bell, or block problem before spending resources.

Starlit Cave is less about one big trick and more about repeating puzzle grammar. Community walkthrough notes describe fire and light placement, pressure circles, movable blocks, bells, locked routes, laboratory clues, and another thorn core. If a circle is already lit, it usually wants weight or Ellie standing on it. If it is unlit, look for a flame or lamp interaction. If a yellow circle appears, test whether it marks a movable block route.

Use the map constantly in this region. The cave has many transitions, and the easiest way to lose time is to solve a room without noticing which passage it opened. After reaching laboratory-related clues, keep checking shelves, cauldrons, statues, and marked trails. Late Act 3 also ties back into Wisteria’s returning residents, so do not ignore Enite and Kyla between cave trips.

Potions, Candies, And Tools To Prioritize

The game teaches recipes gradually, but these are the early and mid-game items that most often stop progress.

Item Use Planning note
Weed Exterminating Potion Clears ordinary weeds and early plant blockers. Keep one spare once the forest opens up.
Curse-lifting Candy Used in early story help and later daily/merchant unlocks. Do not sell all Squishychub or bug-related extracts.
Healing Candy Needed for Rubrum and useful as part of the early quest chain. Recipes may need processed plant extracts, so gather in pairs.
Nutrition Potion Restores or affects wilted plants and plant-based blockers. Polygon’s beginner tips also recommend carrying a small stock.
Moon Tears Major story potion tied to the vine-core and cat-god quest line. Follow the purchased recipe; keep Moonflower and sacred-water steps in mind.
Dream Recollection Potion Advances the strange dream and temple/Roy chain. Ask Diane when Ellie receives the dream keyword.
Firecracker Potion Used for the fountain celebration sequence. The story frames this as a controlled, limited recipe purchase.
Broom, net, chalk, and extractor bottle Core exploration and collection tools. Use new tools from inventory if they do not appear in the active tool set.

Encyclopedia And Collection Cleanup

Official Steam screenshot of the in-game encyclopedia page for a creature
The encyclopedia is both a knowledge book and an achievement roadmap.

The encyclopedia is where casual play becomes completionist play. Each region has life forms, potions, candies, map progress, and S-tier entries. Steam achievements confirm separate goals for Green Forest, Cloud Valley, and Starlit Cave mapping and encyclopedia completion, plus S-tier life form, potion, and candy achievements for each region.

When you enter a new region, do three passes:

  • Map pass: touch signboards and fill the map before solving every side task.
  • Creature pass: observe, sneak, catch, and note day/night behavior. Rare versions count toward rare creature achievements.
  • Recipe pass: buy or unlock new recipes, then craft at least one of each potion or candy when resources allow.

Do not leave S-ranks until the very end if you enjoy efficient cleanup. Work on them region by region while the creature locations are fresh in your head. Steam community encyclopedia guides are especially useful for exact creature behavior, but the public article here keeps the advice general because those pages can shift with patches.

Friendship, Villagers, And Cats

Village restoration and friendship are closely connected. More residents means more shops, more quests, more gifts, and more achievement progress. Talk to villagers after major story beats and after sleeping. A quest may not appear until the next day or until a house project finishes.

Friendship cleanup works best if you talk to villagers as part of your daily route, not only when a quest marker appears.

For gifts, community references list many specific loves and likes, but the safest low-spoiler rule is to unlock gift information through conversation and test gifts you can replace easily. Do not burn rare materials on blind gifting unless you are following a dedicated gift table. For cats, fish and other foods matter, and cat affection has its own achievement line up to max level.

Cats appear as the village develops. Community notes indicate that cat discovery expands after early village work and bridge progress. If a cat is nervous, drop food from a distance and step away. Once affection improves, petting, playing, and eventually home-related cat rewards become part of the cleanup route.

Achievement Roadmap

The public Steam achievements page lists 61 achievements. None of the readable sources confirmed a permanent missable, but several achievements become much easier if you build good habits early: map every new area, collect rare variants when you see them, use witch stations instead of walking everywhere, keep doing delivery tasks, and feed or interact with cats regularly.

Achievement group Examples Cleanup advice
Story and events Freedom at Last, Beginning of an Apprentice Witch, Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three, village event achievements. Progress the main story through Green Forest, Cloud Valley, and Starlit Cave, then attend the village events when they unlock.
Mapping Guide of the Green Forest, Navigator of the Cloud Valley, Starlit Cave Explorer. Use every signboard and revisit unexplored corners before leaving a region behind.
Encyclopedia completion Waker of the Green Forest, Guide of the Cloud Valley, Starlit Cave Expert. Finish region pages while the area’s creatures, plants, and fish are still part of your route.
S-tier mastery Green Forest Biologist, Witch of the Cloud Valley, Starlit Cave Candy Master. Save this for focused cleanup. You need repeated observation, crafting, and collection work.
Economy Gold Coin Collector, Gold Witch, Silver Coin Collector, Silver Witch. Do deliveries, sell excess materials only after saving recipe stock, and avoid wasting Luna Coins on early chalk.
Deliveries Beginning of Deliveries, Earning Pocket Money, Future Millionaire, Candy Factory Manager. Make deliveries part of your day routine instead of grinding all 100 late.
Travel In the Blink of an Eye, The Fastest Way Around, Homeward Bound, Who Still Walks, Anyway? Use witch stations whenever they are convenient. The 100-use achievement is pure habit.
Ritoring and rare creatures First Encounter with Ritoring, Ritoring Detector, Sharp-Eyed, Can’t Miss a Thing. React when a creature looks different. Rare captures are easier when you slow-walk and keep tools ready.
Affection First Bond, Deepening Friendship, Confidant, Cat Person, The Human Cat. Talk, gift, feed, pet, and play on a steady schedule. Affection cleanup is time-gated by daily interactions.

Common Mistakes

  • Selling too aggressively. Money is useful, but replacing potion ingredients wastes more time than most early purchases save.
  • Ignoring night-only materials. Several flowers, insects, and story steps depend on time of day.
  • Running at every creature. Slow movement is not optional for cautious life forms.
  • Forgetting to activate tools and recipes. If something is in your inventory but not usable, try using it from the inventory first.
  • Leaving maps half-finished. Mapping achievements are easier while you are already solving that region’s story.
  • Doing house projects with messy storage. Community notes warn that moved or renovated house storage may shift items to mail or nearby pickup spots after updates. Clear important crates before big renovations when possible.
  • Trying to S-rank everything immediately. Finish the region route first, then return with better tools, more recipes, and a clearer checklist.

Best Cleanup Order

After the main story, clean up in this order:

  1. Finish every map: Green Forest, Cloud Valley, and Starlit Cave.
  2. Complete non-S encyclopedia pages for life forms, plants, fish, potions, and candies.
  3. Work region by region on S-tier entries.
  4. Run deliveries until the 100-delivery achievement is done.
  5. Use witch stations whenever you move between distant goals.
  6. Finish villager affection and gift discovery.
  7. Finish cat affection, cat discovery, and cat-home goals.
  8. Save currency milestones for last unless you naturally reach them earlier.

This order prevents the most annoying kind of cleanup: realizing you still need old Green Forest materials after you have mentally moved on to Starlit Cave. It also lets you combine errands. A good late-game day can include a delivery, one friendship gift, one cat interaction, one map corner, and one encyclopedia target before bedtime.
