Complete route, puzzle logic, secret levels, and achievement cleanup
Is This Seat Taken? looks gentle, but the later chapters can become dense logic puzzles: people want windows, shade, quiet, food, friends, teams, clean seats, working air conditioning, or a very specific spot in front of someone else. This walkthrough gives you a practical route through the full game, explains how the secret levels unlock, and highlights the puzzle rules and achievement interactions that are easiest to miss.

The short version: clear each city once, replay normal levels until every one has a Perfect score, then enter the special level that appears on the map. None of the seating puzzles need twitch timing, but several late-game stages depend on interactive objects such as lights, air conditioners, desk drawers, umbrellas, bottles, trash cans, balls, ducks, and sandcastles.
Full Route And Level Count
The game has five main chapters and 32 total levels when special levels are included. Most chapters have five or six normal levels plus one special level unlocked by Perfect scores in that chapter.
| Chapter | Location | Normal levels | Special level | Main new pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barcelona | Cab/Car, Taxi/Limo, Cinema, Bus, Concert | Wedding | Basic adjacency, windows, sleeping passengers, stage roles, table groups. |
| 2 | Brussels | Bus, Diner, Cinema, Boat, Train | Picnic/Park | Larger layouts, food placement, luggage, rows, bug-light positioning. |
| 3 | London | Limousine, Concert, Bus, Match, Classroom, Airport | Museum | Team fans, classroom objects, bigger travel layouts, artifact matching. |
| 4 | New York | Train, Classroom, Workplace, Diner, Boat, Airport | Speed Dating | Environmental toggles, air conditioning, luggage, partner matching. |
| 5 | Final Barcelona | Train, Workplace, Football Arena, Cinema, Photo Shoot | Beach | All earlier rules combined, front/back photo logic, umbrellas and sun rules. |
Most players can finish the story in a few hours if they accept non-perfect clears, but 100% completion takes longer because every normal level must be perfected and several achievements require deliberate object interactions.
How To Solve Puzzles Faster
The game lets you place everyone and pass with an imperfect score, but secret levels and the Movie star! achievement require perfect solutions. Use this order on every hard stage:
- Read every card before moving anyone. A late card may reveal that a seat you thought was flexible is actually reserved by a window, stage, shade, food, or front-row rule.
- Place unique constraints first. Examples include “must be on stage,” “must be in the water,” “must be alone,” “must sit in front of a named person,” or “must be on the far left.”
- Set interactive objects before final confirmation. Lights, AC units, umbrellas, drawers, bottles, ducks, trash cans, and sandcastles can affect requirements or achievements.
- Use unwanted traits as anchors. Loud music, strong odor, big hats, blocked views, team rivalry, and sleepiness usually decide where a person cannot go, which is often more useful than where they want to go.
- Leave empty seats on purpose. Many layouts include unused seats. If a solution keeps failing, check whether you filled a seat that was supposed to remain empty.
- Confirm only after checking the score marker. If a character is placed but still unhappy, the puzzle may still end, but it will not count as Perfect.
Secret Level Unlocks
Each special level unlocks after you earn a Perfect score on every normal level in its chapter. Return to the chapter map after the last Perfect score and click the new travel point.
| Special level | Unlock condition | Achievement tie-in | Key interaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wedding | Perfect all five normal Barcelona Chapter 1 levels. | Another level? Cool! and Whoops! | Click the bottle for Whoops! after entering the wedding setup. |
| Picnic/Park | Perfect all five normal Brussels levels. | A day at the park and Duck, duck, goose! | Move the bug-attracting light away from bug-haters; click the duck in the pond. |
| Museum | Perfect all six normal London levels. | Night at the Museum. | Match artifacts by shape/theme rather than character names. |
| Speed Dating | Perfect all six normal New York levels. | First dates and Whoops! | Match partner preferences at two-person tables; click the bottle for Whoops! if missed earlier. |
| Beach | Perfect all five normal Final Barcelona levels. | Mediterranean and Do you wanna build a sandcastle? | Open/close umbrellas for shade and click the sandcastle twice. |
Chapter 1: Barcelona
The first Barcelona chapter teaches the grammar of the game. Do not rush it, because nearly every later mechanic is a remix of these early rules.
| Level | What to solve first | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Cab/Car | Follow window requests and use the tutorial scenes to learn how character cards update. | Skipping scenes too quickly if you still need the Meet Nat! or Meet Alexis! achievements. |
| Taxi/Limo | Seat window-lovers first, then pair or isolate characters with social preferences. | Assuming every empty seat is safe; several solutions need gaps. |
| Cinema | Handle view-blocking traits, row preferences, and aisle separation before filling the middle seats. | Putting a big hat, tall shape, or distracting neighbor in front of a sensitive viewer. |
| Bus | Find sleepers, music listeners, talkers, and standing slots first. | Forgetting that waking a sleeper is an achievement, but it can also ruin a Perfect layout if done accidentally. |
| Concert | Decide who belongs on stage and who belongs in the audience before arranging dancers. | Putting ordinary audience members on stage unless you are intentionally triggering Make some noise!. |
| Wedding special | Build stable table groups, match meal preferences, and keep required pairs together. | Leaving the bottle untouched if you need Whoops!. |

Chapter 2: Brussels
Brussels increases the size of the grids and introduces more objects that behave like seats. Treat food, luggage, and environmental items as part of the puzzle, not decoration.
- Bus: Start with named pairs and the few passengers who require exact row behavior. Place standing passengers only after the seated pairs are stable.
- Diner: Place food preferences before people with flexible seating. A person at the counter can satisfy a puzzle, but a table with the wrong food order can block multiple guests at once.
- Cinema: Brussels cinema puzzles are still row-based, but the larger rows create more false positives. Work from the characters with strongest dislike rules outward.
- Boat: Think in top, middle, and bottom bands. People who want quiet or space usually decide the boat before the friendly groups do.
- Train: Luggage matters. Put bags where they belong before testing final passenger order.
- Picnic/Park special: Keep groups together on benches, rugs, and dance spots. Move the bug light away from characters who dislike bugs, and click the duck in the pond for the secret achievement.

Chapter 3: London
London is the point where the game starts combining social logic with event logic. You are no longer just avoiding bad neighbors; you are creating a concert, a match crowd, a classroom, an airport, and a museum.
| London level | Priority rule | Achievement note |
|---|---|---|
| Limousine | Work clockwise and lock in far-left/far-right or window requests first. | No unique interaction required. |
| Concert | Separate actual band members from ordinary visitors before arranging the crowd. | Make some noise! can be triggered here if missed in Chapter 1. |
| Bus | Resolve sleepers, loud passengers, and people who must not be beside strangers. | Are we there yet? is easy to trigger on bus layouts. |
| Match / Sports Arena | Place fans by team, keep rival fans apart, and create at least one same-team chant group. | After fans chant, click/kick the ball for You’ll never walk alone. |
| Classroom | Place disruptive students, desk preferences, and view-blocking seats before quiet learners. | Open the teacher desk drawer for Grab a pen. |
| Airport | Handle luggage, row requests, and people who need to be near or away from specific traits. | No unique interaction required, but it is a good place to practice baggage logic before New York. |
| Museum special | Match exhibits by civilization/theme and shape clues; do not expect normal character names to carry the puzzle. | Unlocking it awards Night at the Museum. |

Chapter 4: New York
New York does not only add more people; it adds more switches. Air conditioning, scenery, luggage, and table state can change whether a seat is valid. If a solution seems correct but one person remains unhappy, look for an object you can click.
- Train: Solve luggage and fixed row preferences first. Do not finalize until every bag-related complaint is gone.
- Classroom: This is another safe place to earn Grab a pen by opening the desk drawer. Watch for Drew’s scene if you still need the character achievement.
- Workplace / Office: Treat office seats like a network of distractions. People who need quiet, clean desks, or distance from certain traits should be placed before the friend groups.
- Diner: Return to the Brussels diner habit: food first, seating second, counter last.
- Boat: Use the boat’s sections to isolate loud or fussy passengers while keeping required groups close.
- Airport: This is one of the longer normal levels, with five puzzle parts in several walkthrough references. Recheck luggage and environmental toggles after each placement wave.
- Speed Dating special: Match people by partner preference, not by normal seat comfort. Click the bottle here if you missed Whoops! at the wedding.
Chapter 5: Final Barcelona
The final chapter returns to Barcelona, but it is not a tutorial remix. It combines trains, offices, stadium logic, cinema placement, and a final photo shoot. Perfecting these levels unlocks the Beach special level and the final cleanup achievements.

Final Barcelona Normal Levels
- Train: Start with luggage and exact row constraints. If one passenger is still unhappy, the issue is often a bag, not their neighbor.
- Workplace / Office: Solve desk-specific constraints and people who need isolation before placing friend groups.
- Football Arena: Use same-team clusters to create chants, keep rival fans apart, and click the ball if you still need You’ll never walk alone.
- Movie Theater / Cinema: View-blocking and adjacency rules stack heavily here. Empty seats are part of the solution.
- Photo Shoot: The key rule is front/back relation. “With” can often mean beside or behind, but “in front of” and “behind” are strict.
Photo Shoot Detailed Notes
The Photo Shoot is the final normal level and has two rows. Read “front of” and “behind” literally. A person can be next to someone or directly behind them for some “with” requirements, but characters who specify front/back should be placed before anyone flexible.
| Part | Safe solving anchors |
|---|---|
| 1 | Put Nat in the lower-left corner, Nadia beside Nat, and Noah behind Nadia. Use the back row for Harper, Tariq, Betul, Koda, and Drew. Jack goes in front of Tariq, and Elijah fits in front of Koda. |
| 2 | Avery belongs on the far left with Gianna in front. Keep Roshan alone in the upper-right corner. Laura can sit to the right of Gianna; Grey goes behind Laura; Teo and Luna build the center/right chain; Sara sits behind Luna; Ira fills the remaining right-side spot. |
| 3 | Marlowe anchors the right side with Gaia in front. Eliana anchors the upper-left with Mateo in front. Kaari needs Foluke, Derry goes in front of Kaari, Dorian goes beside Foluke, and Aurora’s safe spot is in front of Dorian. |
| 4 | The last group is flexible as long as nobody stands in front of someone who objects. Use one row or a mixed row, but keep front-blocking clean. |
Beach Special Level
The Beach special level adds umbrellas, towels, chairs, and inner tubes. Umbrellas can be opened for shade or closed for sun. Click the sandcastle once to break it and a second time to rebuild it for Do you wanna build a sandcastle?.

| Beach part | Anchor moves |
|---|---|
| 1 | Put the three swimmers/kids in the inner tubes. Devon and Sergi need shade under separate umbrellas. Farid can sit beside Devon. Hiroshi should be alone, and Maria can take a sunny towel. |
| 2 | Saige wants Devon’s phone, so place Saige by Devon. Ira’s sunscreen helps the water group; use the left-side tube chain with Lin, Ira, Freia, and Nadia. Keep sunburn-prone people under umbrellas, put Kaari on a sunny towel, and use Oliver on the other towel. |
| 3 | Place swimmers first: Liam far left, Albert as a buffer, Aurora beside Albert, and Ausias in the last tube. Close umbrellas where sun is needed, use Sebastian’s sunscreen near Sergi, and settle Nat and Alexis in the middle chairs. |
| 4 | The four-friend water line works left to right as Victoria, Jenny, Matthew, James. Move Ausias next to Sergi and reopen shade. Nat and Alexis can move to the right towel, while Elisabeth and Macia take chairs; Laura, Rupert, Angela, and Anna finish the dry-side placements. |
Achievement Cleanup
Steam lists 26 achievements for Is This Seat Taken?. Level select is available, so cleanup is forgiving, but you should watch character scenes instead of skipping every cutscene if you want the meet achievements to pop naturally.
| Achievement group | Achievements | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Character scenes | Meet Nat!, Meet Alexis!, Meet Luca!, Meet Val!, Meet Koda!, Meet Drew! | View scenes as each character appears across the story. Avoid skipping everything on a first run. |
| Chapter clears | A tour of Barcelona, A tour of Brussels, A tour of London, A tour of New York, My first movie! | Finish each main chapter. My first movie! is tied to finishing the final main chapter. |
| Special level unlocks | Another level? Cool!, A day at the park, Night at the Museum, First dates, Mediterranean | Perfect every normal level in the matching chapter, then enter the special level. If Mediterranean does not pop on unlock, complete the Beach special. |
| Perfect completion | Movie star! | Earn Perfect on every level, including special levels. |
| Object interactions | Boing!, Time to take out the trash!, Whoops!, Duck, duck, goose!, Grab a pen, Do you wanna build a sandcastle? | Click ordinary objects, repeatedly click a trash can, knock over a bottle, turn the duck, open a classroom drawer, and rebuild the sandcastle. |
| Placement tricks | Are we there yet?, Make some noise!, You’ll never walk alone | Wake a sleeper with noise/talking, put non-band members on stage while the concert plays, and make same-team fans chant before clicking the ball. |
Common Stuck Points
- The level confirms but the special level did not unlock: You probably cleared at least one normal level without a Perfect score. Revisit the chapter map and check every normal node.
- A person still complains after being near the right friend: Their rule may require front/back placement, not simple adjacency.
- The classroom looks correct but still fails: Check the desk drawer, blocked views, and noisy students. The problem is often an object or a line of sight.
- The New York layouts feel inconsistent: Look for AC units or scenery toggles. The correct seat may only work after the environment changes.
- The Beach level will not score Perfect: Recheck umbrella state. Shade and sun requirements can flip the same chair from wrong to right.
- You missed an interaction achievement: Replay the relevant level. The guide references checked for this article agree that cleanup is replay-friendly.
Best 100% Route
- Play through the story normally and watch character scenes.
- Do simple interaction achievements as they appear: click random objects, trash cans, bottles, drawers, ducks, balls, and the sandcastle.
- After each chapter, replay its normal levels until all show Perfect, then clear the special level immediately.
- Leave Movie star! for last. It is easier to track after every special level is unlocked.
- If an achievement seems missing, use level select rather than restarting the whole game.
