Complete story route, C.A.T. puzzles, randomized codes, survival tips, and achievement cleanup

ROUTINE is a first-person sci-fi horror game where most progression runs through your C.A.T. tool, environmental notes, power breakers, access terminals, and a few deliberately stressful stealth sections. This walkthrough is written for players who want a clear route through all six chapters without being misled by fixed code numbers that may not match their own save.

The C.A.T. is your access tool, scanner, puzzle interface, and emergency defense, but most danger is better handled by saving, routing, hiding, and breaking line of sight. Image credit: Lunar Software / Steam.

The most important rule is simple: do not blindly copy every numeric code from a walkthrough. Multiple ROUTINE codes and ID numbers are generated per player or can differ between saves. When this guide says a code is randomized, solve it from your own in-game clue: database entry, suit ID, fingerprint order, CCTV note, keycard, diary, terminal list, or Ultraview symbol.

Before You Start

  • Save at Wireless Access Points whenever you reach one. ROUTINE uses static save points. Connect with the C.A.T. and select Save Data.
  • Carry C.A.T. batteries. The tool uses blue batteries and each full battery gives limited powered uses. Ultraview scanning does not behave like normal C.A.T. shots, but defensive shots and interface actions can matter when you are under pressure.
  • Read notes and terminals as puzzle clues. Emails, diaries, sticky notes, screenshots, and terminal task lists are not just lore.
  • Look down at your suit when asked for your own ID. Several early terminals use the player’s suit number.
  • Use the right module. Standard C.A.T. shots overload fuse boxes and can disable Type 05 units; Ultraview reveals fingerprints and hidden symbols; the Interface Module opens powered security doors and reveals Entity A in some states.
  • Run first, shoot second. Type 05 units can be stunned, but battery is precious. If you are not doing the C.O.R.E. achievement, breaking line of sight is usually safer.
  • Keep audio on. Footsteps, wails, machinery, and terminal sounds are meaningful danger and route cues.

Randomized Codes And Clues

Use this table as your anti-stuck sheet. If a guide number fails, the game is probably asking you to read your own clue.

Where What the code opens How to get your code
Chapter 1: Birth Arrival elevator Connect the C.A.T. to the Wireless Access Point in the meeting room and read the Database entry.
Chapter 1 and 2 Mall/Living Quarters login Look down at the front of your suit and enter your ID number.
Chapter 1: Mall O’Neill’s Electronics and exit shutters Use Ultraview on the keypad and press the fingerprinted numbers from largest print to smallest.
Chapter 2: Gateway A.S.N. access keypad Use Ultraview on the A.S.N. keypad and read fingerprint size order.
Chapter 2: Living Quarters Reception door Use CCTV, switch to the Reception feed, move/zoom the camera, and read the note on the wall.
Chapter 3: Re-Create A.S.N. shutdown nodes Read the terminal list and lower only the numbered nodes shown in your game.
Chapter 4: Adrift Server diagnostics Run Diagnostics and pull the exact damaged drawers listed on your terminal.
Chapter 4: Ward Kali’s locker Read the Archives diary entry, then enter the locker PIN from your save notes/task data.
Chapter 4: Restroom/Vestibule Bathroom keypad Use the locker photos, find four hidden symbols with Ultraview, flip the code diagram, and map the columns correctly.
Chapter 4/5 Mason/Maria/William terminals Use the ID number printed on the matching keycard found in your playthrough.

Chapter 1: Birth

After the opening cutscene, get your helmet from the wall, use the computer to complete the basic movement form, and print your ID. If it falls under the desk, crouch low and pick it up. Open the room door from the nearby terminal, head left for the moon presentation, then enter the meeting rooms to find the C.A.T. on a table.

Get comfortable inspecting the C.A.T. It is not just a weapon-shaped object: modules, battery state, wireless access, and terminal interactions all run through it. Image credit: Lunar Software / Steam.
  1. Pick up a blue battery near the meeting area and insert it into the C.A.T.
  2. Connect to the projection screen’s Wireless Access Point, save, and read the Database for your elevator code.
  3. Use that code on the elevator keypad and select Gateway.
  4. At the Gateway, inspect the A.S.N. terminal, then open the tram gate by following its cables to a fuse box and overloading it with a standard C.A.T. shot.
  5. Ride the tram to the Mall.
  6. At the Mall desk, use the ID on your suit, call IC assistance, and follow the droid route toward the service hatch.

The Mall is the first dangerous section. When a gate traps you in, crouch and press the hidden button under the nearby checkout desk. A Type 05 opens the path, but it also turns the area hostile. Hide, sprint, and use shelves and corners instead of trying to fight every robot.

Megazone And Ultraview

From the broken gate area, move toward Galaxy Video and Union Plaza, then find the purple-lit MEGAZONE entrance. Before leaving MEGAZONE, interact with the working Gunshow arcade cabinet for the MEGAZONE achievement. Use the office terminal route to open the Playground shutter, then reach O’Neill’s Electronics and pick up the Ultraview Module.

Ultraview is the first major puzzle upgrade. For fingerprint keypads, hold the scanner over the keypad and enter the marked numbers in order from largest fingerprint to smallest. Use that logic to leave the electronics shop and later to handle the Mall exit shutter. If a listed walkthrough code fails, trust your fingerprints, not the old number.

Chapter 2: Incision

Return to the Gateway and use Ultraview on the A.S.N. keypad. You still need Kei Koyama’s ID, so take the tram to the Living Quarters. Reset the malfunctioning terminal near the station by flipping the switch at its base, then use your suit ID to enter.

  • Living Quarters danger: a Type 05 can enter while the gate opens. Hide first, then move.
  • Reception code: reach the CCTV room, switch to the Reception camera, and zoom/move the view until you can read the note.
  • Fire protocol: enter Reception with the CCTV code and shut the protocol down from the wall screen.
  • Kei’s apartment: go through the laundry/laundrette route to apartment 04B and take Kei’s ID above the terminal.
  • A.S.N. entry: return to the Gateway, scan Kei’s ID at the A.S.N. terminal, then overload the awakened IC bot with the C.A.T. to open the A.S.N. route.

Chapter 3: Re-Create

This chapter is shorter but easy to misread. Save at the Wireless Access Point, inspect the body/recording if you want the context, then enter the large A.S.N. room with two red terminals.

  1. Use the first terminal’s Shutdown tab. It may reboot once; initiate it again.
  2. Go to the second terminal and press Continue.
  3. Read the node list shown in your game. Lower only those numbered mechanical ramps around the central machine.
  4. Return to a terminal and Continue.
  5. Operate both lit Manual Release switches, one after the other.
  6. When the small central bud rises, fire a standard C.A.T. shot at it.

The node numbers can differ. Some sources list example nodes, but the safe rule is to obey the terminal currently in front of you.

Chapter 4: Adrift

Adrift is the largest puzzle chapter and the place where most players get lost. It combines power routing, security levels, server diagnostics, an invisible/partly visible threat, and a multi-step symbol code.

When a terminal asks for power, security, or diagnostics, think in systems: breaker first, correct C.A.T. module second, terminal action third. Image credit: Lunar Software / Steam.

Getting The Interface Module

  1. After leaving the re-entry room, reach the tree/Archives area and save.
  2. Crawl into the vent behind the Access Point and power Archives, Door Imaging, and Door Systems from the breaker.
  3. Try the Archives reboot. It asks for Security Level 1.
  4. Go through the left-side open route to the ward reception area.
  5. Before leaving reception, watch the MEDIA video on the terminal for the Entity A achievement.
  6. Power Door Reception, crawl through the vent into reception, and pick up the Interface Module from the desk.

The Interface Module opens powered security doors by scanning the security monitor/panel. If a door will not open, check both pieces: the door must be powered by a breaker, and your current security level must be high enough.

Servers And The Entity A Shift

Return to Archives, use the Interface Module on the Security Level 1 monitor, then follow the objective to repair Servers. Power the Common doors, route yourself toward the Server elevator, and run Diagnostics. The terminal lists damaged server drawers; pull out the exact drawer labels listed in your game, then run Diagnostics again and restart the server.

After the highlighted-floor sequence, escape to the elevator quickly. The Ward becomes dangerous after this point. Entity A can patrol, hide, appear partially, or require the Interface Module to see in some situations. Listen for footsteps and cries, keep moving, and use concrete corridors, vents, or the control/reception space to escape.

Kali’s Locker And The Restroom PIN

Once Archives is rebooted, read the diary. It gives the locker PIN for Kali’s locker near the plant-covered body in Commons. Inside are a code diagram and four photos. The exact symbols are randomized, but the solving method is stable:

  1. Use the photos to locate four Ward spots: reception/window area, Systems near the Servers door, the tree/Arbour area, and the Restroom keypad wall.
  2. At each spot, use Ultraview to reveal the hidden symbol. Get close because similar symbols can be easy to confuse.
  3. Return to the code diagram. Symbols correspond to columns on the front.
  4. Flip the diagram to see the digits behind those symbol positions.
  5. Respect the left-to-right column order when forming the PIN.
  6. Enter the PIN at the Restroom keypad to open the Vestibule route.

In the Vestibule, run the Optical and Auditory tests, then start the Basin drain. The answer choices reported in guides do not appear to block progress; the important part is completing the process. After the Basin drains, crawl in, recover Mason’s keycard, use his ID at the terminal behind the main screen, and upgrade the Interface Module to Security Level 2.

Chapter 5: Endure

Endure begins on the lunar surface and moves into the Annex/Botany areas. Follow the coned moon path to the next bunker, complete the airlock, take the elevator up, and use Security Level 2 to enter the Main Wing.

The moon-walk sections are short, but they often sit between long indoor puzzle chains. Save before and after major transitions when possible. Image credit: Lunar Software / Steam.
  1. Enter Laboratory 01 and crawl through the vent behind the terminal.
  2. Reach the cistern/save area, then crawl under the nearby door into the room with Maria’s keycard.
  3. Use Maria’s ID on Maria’s terminal and run the EXE option to open the next route.
  4. Reach the chemical lab through the vent path.
  5. Create the EL-9 disinfectant with: Isopropyl Alcohol, Copper Ions, Hydrogen Peroxide, and EDTA.
  6. Return to the decontamination chamber and let the disinfectant sequence open the Main Control Lab.
  7. Pick up William’s keycard, then use William’s ID at the Access Override terminal.
  8. Follow the dark lower route by tracking red pipes and red overhead objects until you reach the crank wheel.
  9. Turn the crank, return to the cistern, descend the drained route, and reach the office terminal.
  10. Use William’s ID again and upgrade the Interface Module to Security Level 3.

Two warnings matter here. First, Maria’s and William’s ID numbers can differ, so read your own keycards. Second, the entity pressure resumes after the keycard moment, so save at every Access Point and do not linger in open rooms.

Chapter 6: Legacy

Return to the Ward and save near Archives. The endgame asks you to realign two PRONG terminals, route power through Imaging/Echography, and then move through the Path.

Legacy reuses your Ward knowledge under pressure. Know your breaker routes before sprinting deep into dangerous territory. Image credit: Lunar Software / Steam.
  1. Power and enter PRONG 1 near reception, then adjust arrows until both Clarity and Proximity read 100%.
  2. Reach PRONG 2 through the dangerous Ward side. Power the PRONG 2 door and repeat the 100% alignment.
  3. Power Imaging 02, move through the Imaging route, then power Echography from the red-hall breaker.
  4. In Echography, press Continue on the terminal and wait for the sequence.
  5. Go to the Ripening and Induction terminal, press Yes, and wait until the Canal is ready.
  6. Return toward Imaging/Archives and save if possible.
  7. Enter the Path behind Archives, play the media screen, then continue through the blue-lit route.
  8. After the throw sequence, your C.A.T. battery may be drained. Use the recycler/battery spot in the airlock room before proceeding.
  9. Continue through the cave/dark route to the final sphere sequence and Chapter 00 achievement.

Achievement Cleanup

Steam lists 14 achievements for ROUTINE. Seven are chapter progression achievements, and the rest are task/module achievements you can plan around in one playthrough. Treat MEGAZONE and the task interactions as missable in practice: level select is not the same as a traditional chapter replay menu, so do them when you pass the area.

Achievement Where How to unlock it
Chapter 01 Birth Start Chapter 1.
Chapter 02 Incision Return from the Mall and begin Chapter 2.
Chapter 03 Re-Create Enter the A.S.N.
Chapter 04 Adrift Exit the A.S.N./re-entry sequence.
Chapter 05 Endure Reach the lunar surface/Annex transition.
Chapter 06 Legacy Return to the Ward after Endure.
Chapter 00 Ending Reach the final end sequence in Legacy.
C.O.R.E. Birth or Incision Disable a Type 05 with the C.A.T. The early Mall encounter is the easiest planned opportunity. Bring enough charge.
MEGAZONE Birth Play/interact with the Gunshow arcade cabinet in MEGAZONE before leaving the Mall.
Ultraview Module Birth Pick up the Ultraview Module in O’Neill’s Electronics.
Entity A Adrift Watch the Markings video from the MEDIA tab on the ward reception terminal.
Interface Module Adrift Collect the Interface Module from the ward reception desk after entering via vents.
Alignment Adrift Complete the Vestibule process and drain the Basin.
Disinfectant Compiler Endure Create the EL-9 disinfectant: Isopropyl Alcohol, Copper Ions, Hydrogen Peroxide, EDTA.

Common Mistakes

  • Using old numeric codes: if the code fails, solve from your own clue. ROUTINE randomizes more numbers than many guides make obvious.
  • Forgetting the C.A.T. task list/database: Wireless Access Points often preserve useful notes, IDs, and tasks.
  • Keeping the wrong module active: close/open the correct module slot before trying to shoot, scan fingerprints, or interface with a security monitor.
  • Trying to fight every Type 05: stun only when needed. Run, turn corners, and hide behind objects to preserve battery.
  • Not powering doors before scanning them: a security door may need breaker power before the Interface Module can do anything.
  • Misreading Kali’s code diagram: find the symbols with Ultraview, flip the sheet, and preserve left-to-right column order. Do not simply read the back page like normal text.
  • Skipping MEGAZONE interaction: do the arcade achievement while you are in the Mall so you do not have to replay a large section.
  • Ignoring sound cues: Entity A and Type 05 movement are often easier to hear than see.
