Animal Well Walkthrough: Flames, Items, Eggs, Bunnies, and Cleanup

Animal Well is best played with two plans in your head at once. The first plan is simple: gather the main tools, claim the four Flames, survive the final area, and roll credits. The second plan begins when the game quietly proves that the first plan was only the surface: eggs, candles, matches, the UV Lantern, the Office Key, secret bunnies, and puzzle layers that are deliberately built for note-taking and community cross-checking.

This walkthrough gives you a practical route through both parts without turning the whole game into a room-by-room map dump. It focuses on what to do next, which tools open which problems, where the major cleanup gates are, which trophies are easy to miss, and when it is better to stop exploring blind and start using a checklist.

Animal Well rewards curiosity, but it also rewards discipline: mark suspicious rooms, item gates, candles, locked doors, and places you cannot yet reach.

Best Route at a Glance

The game is non-linear after the opening, so this is not the only valid route. It is a clean first-clear route that keeps your movement tools coming steadily and avoids the worst early confusion.

Phase Main Goal Why It Matters
Opening Reach the central statue hub, collect the Map, grab Firecrackers, and visit the Egg Room. The Map, Stamps, and Firecrackers make the well readable instead of random.
Early tools Get the Bubble Wand, Disc, Yo-Yo, and Slink. These four tools are the backbone of first-ending routing.
Egg rewards Collect at least 8 eggs for the Animal Flute, then 16 for the Pencil and 32 for the Top when possible. Egg rewards are not cosmetic. They unlock fast travel, map notes, and terrain-breaking cleanup.
Four Flames Claim the Chameleon, Seahorse, Ostrich, and Dog/Ghost flames. All four are required to open the late-game route.
Final area Place the Flames, obtain the Lantern, solve the final tool door, and escape the Manticore. This reaches the first ending and opens the House.
Post-game cleanup Use the House Key, gather all 64 eggs, light all 9 candles, obtain late tools, and solve the Egg Song route. This is where the true ending and achievement cleanup live.
Deep secrets Start bunny hunting only after the true-ending toolset is in place. Bunnies are third-layer puzzle content and are much harder to solve without full traversal options.

Before You Start

Animal Well does not label rooms, quest objectives, or most item gates. The best first habit is to treat your map as a working document.

  • Use stamps immediately. Mark locked doors, suspicious blocks, animal statues, candles, unreachable chests, and places where an item almost works.
  • Return to the Egg Room often. It is not just a collectible display. It gives important tools at egg thresholds.
  • Keep separate notes for songs. Flute songs become a major part of travel and late-game puzzles.
  • Do not assume an obstacle is permanent. Many rooms become simple after a new tool changes one interaction.
  • Save before risky experiments. Telephones are save points. Use them before long chases, ghost rooms, and unfamiliar boss-like sequences.
  • Delay bunny obsession. Secret bunnies are real, but most players should finish the first ending and egg/candle cleanup before hunting them seriously.

Opening: Firecrackers, Map, and the Hub

The start is more linear than the rest of the game. Move through the introductory rooms until you reach the early save phone, crank and switch puzzles, and the first Firecracker pickup. Firecrackers scare away ghosts and briefly light dark areas, but you can only carry a small number at first, so do not waste them just to look around.

Your early priorities are:

  1. Reach the main well area and central statue hub.
  2. Find the Map so room connections start making sense.
  3. Enter the Egg Room and pick up Stamps so you can mark the map.
  4. Mark the four main biome directions from the statue hub.
  5. Pick a first tool route instead of wandering until something works.

The hub branches toward four major areas. You can tackle them in different orders, but for a readable first run, get the Bubble Wand and Disc early, then finish Yo-Yo and Slink before committing to all Flame cleanup.

Main Tools and What They Unlock

Animal Well’s tools are puzzle verbs. If you know what each one changes, you can usually work out where to go next without memorizing every room.

Tool How It Helps Route Priority
Map Shows explored rooms and the shape of the well. Get this early, then keep updating your mental route.
Stamps Let you mark the map with icons. Pick up in the Egg Room as soon as you can.
Firecrackers Scare ghosts, reveal dark rooms briefly, and solve several creature interactions. Opening item; conserve them until your carry capacity improves.
Bubble Wand Creates a bubble you can jump on; also feeds some fish-head travel routes. Excellent first major tool because it expands movement immediately.
Disc Bounces, toggles buttons, distracts dogs, and can be ridden in special setups. Get the Mock Disc first if you want to avoid a stressful ghost chase.
Mock Disc Replaces the real Disc in the dog statue. Use it before taking the real Disc for the cleanest Dog path.
Yo-Yo Hits distant switches, breaks spikes, and manipulates several moving animals and wheels. Essential for multiple Flame routes and final door logic.
Slink Falls down steps and holds buttons as it moves. Needed for multi-button and timing puzzles, especially in upper routes.
Animal Flute Enables fast travel and song puzzles. Reward for 8 eggs; get it before routes that ask for music.
Pencil Lets you draw on the map. Reward for 16 eggs; very helpful for cleanup.
Top Breaks special ground and several destructible terrain blocks. Reward for 32 eggs; important for second-layer cleanup.
Lantern Protects against ghosts and lights dark areas. Obtained after the four Flames open the fifth section.
Remote Switches remote blocks and triggers special beacon effects. Post-game/cleanup tool; useful for eggs and candles.
Wheel Crosses spikes safely and activates wheel controls. Post-game traversal tool tied to freeing cats and the Cat Room route.
Bouncy Ball Breaks special blocks and helps with certain secret rooms. Obtained through the Kangaroo/K Medal route; better after you have strong map notes.
UV Lantern Reveals hidden messages, murals, and late puzzle clues. Requires all 9 candles and the follow-up route. Do this before deep bunny work.
F. Pack Raises Firecracker carry capacity to six. Found in the House after the first ending.

Most progression problems are tool problems. If a room feels impossible, mark it and come back after another item changes the rules.

First Major Tools Route

After Firecrackers, the first major tools can be collected in more than one order. This route keeps the movement curve smooth.

  1. Go for the Bubble Wand. It is found in the western/southwestern side of the map and gives you a reliable vertical movement option.
  2. Use bubbles to explore and return to marked ledges. Learn that bubbles rise, can be redirected by air, and can be used as temporary platforms.
  3. Work toward the Disc route. The Disc is tied to the dog statue area. If possible, collect the Mock Disc before taking the real Disc so the ghost dog does not turn the area into a long chase.
  4. Head toward the Yo-Yo. It is in the lower-right/eastern side and changes how you solve switches, spikes, and animal-wheel rooms.
  5. Get the Slink. It is in the upper-right/northeastern side and solves step/button puzzles that cannot be handled by direct throws.
  6. Start counting eggs seriously. Eight eggs unlock the Animal Flute. Sixteen unlock the Pencil. Thirty-two unlock the Top.

If you get lost after the Bubble Wand, a good next target is the Disc, then Yo-Yo and Slink. If you already found one of those first, do not restart. Just use the missing-tool table above and keep moving toward the four Flames.

Four Flames Walkthrough

The four Flames are the first layer’s main objective. They correspond to four large biome routes and can be done in different orders. The important part is to leave each route with its Flame and any major tool access you opened along the way.

Flame Area Tools You Should Have Route Advice
V. Flame Chameleon route Yo-Yo, Firecrackers, strong map notes Expect chase pressure, hedgehog/chinchilla interactions, and Yo-Yo switch timing. Break the Flame glass with the Yo-Yo when the route opens.
B. Flame Seahorse route Bubble Wand, Yo-Yo, Disc helpful Watch reflector puzzles, water flow, bubble travel, and catfish movement. The route teaches you to think of bubbles as both platforms and transport.
G. Flame Ostrich route Bubble Wand, Disc, Yo-Yo, Animal Flute useful The route mixes moving platforms, ostrich pressure, and repeated returns through fish pipes and switch states. Keep the map marked.
P. Flame Dog/Ghost route Disc, Mock Disc, Bubble Wand, Yo-Yo Do not casually steal the Disc without a plan. The clean route uses the Mock Disc to stop the ghost dog chase and then lets you claim the Flame.

The most common first-run mistake is trying to force one Flame route while missing a tool from another branch. If a room asks for simultaneous switches, look for Slink. If the switch is out of reach, look for Yo-Yo or Disc. If the gap is vertical, think Bubble Wand. If a hidden floor or dirt-like block stops cleanup, you may need the Top later instead of another jump trick now.

Disc and Mock Disc Warning

The Dog route deserves its own warning because it is one of the first stressful traps players create for themselves. The real Disc is in the dog statue area, but taking it directly can unleash a ghost dog chase that follows you between rooms. You can survive that route, but it is much cleaner to first locate the Mock Disc, return to the statue, and swap the fake for the real one.

If you already triggered the chase, do not panic. Save when safe, plan a short route, and use the Disc’s bounce and dog-distraction behavior to move through the area. For a relaxed first clear, though, treat “Mock Disc before real Disc” as the rule.

Egg Rewards and When to Stop Blind Searching

Eggs are the main collectible of the second layer, but they start helping long before the true ending. There are 64 normal eggs, and collecting all of them leads to the 65th egg reward route.

Egg Count Reward or Milestone Why You Care
1 Secret Egg trophy/achievement progress Introduces the collectible layer and confirms that hidden chests matter.
8 Animal Flute Unlocks fast travel and many song puzzles.
16 Pencil Lets you draw map notes, which is huge for cleanup.
32 Top Breaks special ground and opens many second-layer rooms.
64 Full egg set Unlocks the path toward the 65th egg and deeper ending work.

For the first ending, do not stall the game just to collect every egg. Get enough for the Animal Flute, then continue the Flame route. After credits, return with the Lantern, Top, Remote, Wheel, and better map knowledge. That is when a full egg checklist becomes efficient.

Final Area and Manticore

After placing the four Flames in the statue hub, the game opens the fifth section. This is where the Lantern becomes important. The Lantern protects you from ghosts and makes dark rooms more manageable, and it is required for the end route.

Near the final approach, there is a multi-tool door that checks whether you understand your kit. The verified route uses several tools in the same room: Yo-Yo below, Bubble Wand to the left, Lantern to the right, and Disc toward the far-right switch area. Once the door opens, you enter the Manticore sequence.

The Manticore fight is more of a chase and routing puzzle than a traditional combat fight. Stay calm, use the arena’s structure, and focus on the order of actions rather than trying to attack it directly. Once you escape and reach credits, the House Key drops and you can enter the House. Check the closet under the first stairs for the F. Pack, which raises Firecracker capacity.

The four Flame routes each teach a different kind of logic: movement, timing, switch state, animal behavior, and tool combinations.

Post-Game Cleanup Route

After the first ending, your goal changes. You are no longer just asking “where is the next Flame?” You are now asking which hidden systems remain incomplete.

  1. Enter the House and get the F. Pack. More Firecrackers make ghost and dark-room cleanup less annoying.
  2. Use the Lantern to revisit dark and ghost-heavy rooms. Many places become safer and easier to inspect.
  3. Collect all 64 eggs. Use a checklist once your map is mostly filled; the last few are not worth brute-force wandering.
  4. Find all 9 matches and light all 9 candles. Matches are not tied to specific candles, so any match can light any unlit candle.
  5. Unlock the UV Lantern route. Lighting all candles leads toward the Eel Medal/UV path and a music puzzle involving the skeleton fish.
  6. Use UV clues on the Egg Room. The UV Lantern reveals hidden egg markings that lead into the Egg Song puzzle.
  7. Claim the Office Key. Completing the post-game Egg Song puzzle opens the route to the Office Key.
  8. Only then chase bunnies seriously. Many bunny puzzles expect late tools, songs, UV clues, or external-style puzzle logic.

This is also the best time to clean up tools such as Remote, Wheel, Bouncy Ball, UV Lantern, and B.B. Wand. Their routes overlap with eggs, candles, and late-game traversal, so do not treat them as isolated errands.

Candles, Matches, and the UV Lantern

There are 9 candles and 9 matches. You do not need to pair a specific match with a specific candle. The practical rule is simple: every time you find a match, spend it on the next candle you can reach, and mark every unlit candle until you come back.

Lighting all candles matters because it leads into the UV Lantern route. The UV Lantern is not just a dark-room helper. It reveals hidden messages, murals, egg markings, and late puzzle instructions. If you are trying to move from “I beat the game” to “I understand what the game is hiding,” the UV Lantern is one of the most important post-game tools.

Cleanup Target Requirement Do This When
All candles 9 matches and 9 candle locations After Lantern and solid map coverage.
UV Lantern All candles lit, then follow the late underwater/skeleton fish route Before final egg-song and bunny puzzle work.
Office Key Post-game Egg Song puzzle after all eggs and UV clue work After 64 eggs and UV Lantern.
Second ending/deeper route 65th egg, Manticore/incubator follow-up, and late flute routing After the full egg set is complete.

Bunny Layer: When to Use a Guide

Secret bunnies are where Animal Well stops being a normal metroidvania cleanup and becomes a community-scale puzzle box. References agree that the bunny layer expects advanced tool use, songs, UV clues, mural logic, and sometimes puzzle information that many players will not reasonably derive alone.

Do not start with bunnies if you are still missing the Top, UV Lantern, Office Key, or large chunks of the map. A sane order is:

  1. First ending.
  2. House and F. Pack.
  3. All 64 eggs.
  4. All 9 candles and UV Lantern.
  5. Office Key and deeper post-game clues.
  6. Bunny hunting with a dedicated checklist.

One important caution: some community references discuss extra or unintended bunnies, datamining traps, wrong warps, and post-layer oddities. For normal players, focus on the intended 16-bunny path before worrying about anything beyond that. Achievement/trophy completion does not require solving every extreme community-layer puzzle.

Trophy and Achievement Cleanup

Most trophies unlock naturally if you follow a completion route, but a few are easier to plan. Use this as a cleanup checklist after your first ending.

Trophy / Achievement Requirement Cleanup Note
Explorer Find the Map Early progression.
Secret Egg / Egg Enjoyer / Egg Hobbyist / Egg Lord Find eggs at increasing thresholds, including 8, 16, and 32. These align with Animal Flute, Pencil, and Top rewards.
Chameleon / Seahorse / Ostrich / Ghost Find the four Flames. Main-route trophies.
Manticore Release or escape the Manticore sequence. Story-related near the first ending.
Candle Bright Light all candles. Requires all 9 matches and 9 candles.
Travel Flute Find a new way to get around with the Animal Flute. The warp-room song is UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT.
Back and Forth Forever Ride a Disc bouncing repeatedly. Set up a horizontal bounce and jump onto it.
Bubble Ecstasy Pop 1000 bubbles. Best farmed around the Seahorse/bubble-heavy areas.
Walk the Dog Use movement/tool behavior to create a new traversal interaction. Often tied to Yo-Yo interaction with a chinchilla platform setup.
Sneak Sneak up on a squirrel. Use a separate new save if this is your last trophy; it is easier early.
Good Ending Get crushed by a chinchilla. Can be triggered in a Chameleon-biome setup involving a Firecracker and chinchillas.
Exit Leave the well. Tied to the deeper ending route rather than merely seeing the first credits.
Platinum Well Earn every trophy. Finish egg, candle, ending, and odd interaction cleanup.

Common Mistakes

  • Taking the Disc before planning the Mock Disc swap. This can trigger a chase that is avoidable on a calmer route.
  • Ignoring the Egg Room. The 8, 16, and 32 egg rewards are major progression tools.
  • Forgetting to mark candles and locked rooms. The last few cleanup targets are painful without map notes.
  • Trying to brute-force bunnies too early. Finish tools, eggs, candles, UV clues, and office access first.
  • Assuming all songs are optional. The Animal Flute is fast travel, puzzle input, and late-game logic.
  • Wasting Firecrackers in dark rooms. Until you have the F. Pack, carry capacity is limited.
  • Skipping trophy oddities until you forget the setup. Sneak and Good Ending are easier when you intentionally set them up.
  • Expecting every secret to be solo-obvious. Some late-layer puzzles are designed to push beyond normal single-player observation.

The second layer is about revisiting. Eggs, candles, hidden blocks, UV messages, and late tools make old rooms behave differently.

Spoiler-Light Cleanup Checklist

If you want a compact checklist without every room spoiled, use this order:

  1. Reach the hub and collect the Map, Stamps, and Firecrackers.
  2. Get Bubble Wand, Disc, Yo-Yo, Slink, and Mock Disc as needed.
  3. Collect at least 8 eggs for Animal Flute.
  4. Collect 16 eggs for Pencil if you want better map notes.
  5. Collect 32 eggs for Top before serious cleanup.
  6. Claim V. Flame, B. Flame, G. Flame, and P. Flame.
  7. Enter the fifth section, obtain Lantern, solve the final tool door, and finish the Manticore sequence.
  8. Enter the House and collect F. Pack.
  9. Find Remote, Wheel, Bouncy Ball, and other late traversal tools.
  10. Collect all 64 eggs.
  11. Find all 9 matches and light all 9 candles.
  12. Get UV Lantern and solve the Egg Song route.
  13. Use the Office Key and finish deeper ending cleanup.
  14. Clean up trophies such as Sneak, Good Ending, Bubble Ecstasy, Back and Forth Forever, and Candle Bright.
  15. Begin bunny hunting only after the above list is done.

What Is Fully Verified Here

The first-ending route structure, main tool purposes, four-Flame objective, 64-egg count, 9-candle and 9-match count, major egg reward thresholds, UV Lantern role, Office Key route, and trophy cleanup priorities were cross-checked against readable walkthrough, wiki, item, trophy, and community guide references. Exact room-by-room egg, candle, and bunny maps were intentionally not reproduced here because those are better handled by dedicated interactive maps or checklist pages once you are at that cleanup stage.

Video-style references were available as community walkthrough material, but no YouTube embed is included because the video title, channel, and embeddable source were not independently confirmed for this article.
