Riven Walkthrough: Puzzle Route, Endings, and Achievements

Official Riven screenshot showing the remake's island environment and water

Riven is a puzzle adventure about reading a world, not just entering codes. The 2024 remake keeps the classic shape of the journey, but several important solutions are now derived from your own playthrough. This walkthrough gives you the island route, the fixed interactions that commonly stop players, the logic behind the randomized puzzles, and a cleanup plan for endings and achievements.

Spoiler warning: this guide names islands, late-game ages, puzzle systems, ending branches, achievement triggers, and the broad solution method for the Golden Dome. If you want a low-spoiler first run, use the route overview and the “fixed vs randomized” table first, then return for the detailed sections when you are truly stuck.

Riven works best when you treat every machine, symbol, and sound as a piece of one larger language puzzle.

Best Completion Plan

  1. Use the in-game notebook and screenshots. The remake expects you to record symbols, D’ni numerals, Rivenese numerals, animal markings, sound patterns, and Gehn’s lab notes.
  2. Read the journals. Atrus, Catherine, and Gehn all carry progression clues, not just lore.
  3. Make manual saves at four points: before using the Trap Book in Tay, before entering Age 233, after trapping Gehn, and before opening the final rift.
  4. Do not assume every online code applies to your save. The animal-stone order, Catherine-related combinations, and Golden Dome calibration work are meant to be solved from your own clues.
  5. For achievements, do optional actions before completing their related puzzle. Several achievements lock out once the world state advances.
  6. For the good ending, trap Gehn, free Catherine, then open the rift for Atrus. Opening the rift too early creates a bad-ending branch.

Fixed vs Randomized Information

Puzzle or Clue Status What To Trust
Temple Island wooden gate Fixed Remove the top hinge, then open the gate. You do not need a key.
D’ni numbers Rule-based Learn them from the schoolhouse game and Gehn’s notes. D’ni uses a base-25 style structure, so rotated symbols matter.
Rivenese numbers Rule-based Learn the wedge symbols in the schoolhouse and later use them for Catherine’s journal and totem ordering.
Moiety animal-stone order Randomized Use the lens at all six animal totems, align each eyepiece, translate the Rivenese number, then press the animal stones in that order.
Golden Dome marble grid Derived Use Survey Island’s island-shape grid and hidden color clues. Do not guess from the Golden Dome alone.
Golden Dome slider values Derived and possibly save-dependent Use your fire-marble base value from Gehn’s lab, then apply the plus/minus D’ni values from the lab note.
Catherine’s prison sound code Randomized Listen to the five-sound music box in Age 233 and reproduce that pattern at Prison Island.
Final rift machine code Randomized Use Catherine’s journal, translate the Rivenese sequence into D’ni, then enter it at the rift machine.

Route Overview

Stage Main Goal Important Notes
Temple Island Escape the opening area, learn the revolving room, reach the Golden Dome, and open the path to Jungle Island. Check the fallen guard early for Cho?, open all five beetles for Visual history, and remove the wooden gate hinge.
Jungle Island Find the lens, learn the schoolhouse number clues, and reach Boiler Island. The lens is one of the most important tools in the game. Start using it on unusual markings and totems.
Boiler Island Enter the boiler, drain the cave, reach Gehn’s lab, and connect the first Starry Expanse bridge. Record the fire-marble base value and Gehn’s compensation note before leaving the lab.
Prison Island Meet Catherine, note the sound-lock door, and connect another dome. The prison door cannot be solved yet; the sound code comes much later.
Survey Island Solve the island-shape puzzle, find the hidden floor, connect the dome, and chase the scribe. Turn the maglev around before leaving stations. The other side often hides the real route.
Jungle return and Tay Use the submarine route, gather all totem clues, open the Moiety animal-stone puzzle, and visit Tay. Save before using the Trap Book if you want the bad-ending achievement without replaying.
Golden Dome and Age 233 Connect all five domes, solve the marble grid and slider puzzle, then trap Gehn. Make a clean save before entering Age 233. This is the best achievement branch point.
Finale Free Catherine, power the rift machine, enter Catherine’s journal code, and signal Atrus. Do not open the rift before freeing Catherine if you want the good ending.

Walkthrough

Temple Island: Cage, Revolving Room, and Golden Dome

After Atrus sends you to Riven, watch the opening scene and wait until you are released from the cage. Before you go far, look down from the cliff near the starting cage to discover the fate of Gehn’s man. This early check is tied to Cho?, and it can be missed if you move too far into the game first.

Open your satchel and read Atrus’s journal. Riven is generous with environmental clues, but it is not generous if you skip the written context. Head up to the revolving room. The first real blocker is the wooden gate: click the top hinge to remove it, then open the gate. The visible lock is a deliberate distraction for returning 1997 players and new players alike.

Inside the revolving room, experiment with the outside buttons and room exits until you understand that the room turns one position at a time. Open the five golden beetles and look through them for Visual history. Use the room to access the side area with the pipe lever; set that lever so the starting rift machine can receive power later. You do not need the rift machine yet, but doing this now saves a return trip.

Next, use the revolving room to reach the Golden Dome. The central device is late-game material, so focus on exploration for now. On one lower route you can reach a chair control that opens the temple door and gives you access to the maglev route. Another back route has a bridge mechanism; use it if you want Collateral Damage. When you are ready, leave through the temple path and ride the maglev to Jungle Island.

Jungle Island: Lens, Schoolhouse, and First Number Lessons

Jungle Island is where Riven starts teaching its real language. Near the beach with the resting sea creatures, look behind the rocks and collect the lens. This tool reveals invisible Moiety markings and is required for several major clues. The hotkey is worth using because you will need the lens often.

Move through the early Jungle paths, visit the cut-tree clearing, and inspect the strange starry breach before it is contained if you want Total collapse is imminent. Continue toward the village and enter the schoolhouse near water level. The note and the wooden wahrk game teach you how Arabic numbers, D’ni square numerals, and Rivenese wedge numerals relate. Do not just glance at them. Make a clean conversion note for numbers you can prove; you will reuse it during the animal puzzle, the Golden Dome, and the finale.

If you see a large animal totem and do not yet understand it, mark its location and move on. The answer depends on multiple islands, the lens, and your number notes. For now, follow the available route to the minecart and travel to Boiler Island.

The remake rewards note-taking. A symbol that looks decorative on one island may become a number, color, or position clue on another.

Boiler Island: Boiler Controls, Pump, and Gehn’s Lab

At Boiler Island, the central pipe valve decides where steam goes. To enter the boiler, point the valve toward the boiler area. At the boiler controls, drain the water, redirect the steam, turn off the heat, and raise the walking platform. When the boiler becomes safe, the door opens and you can walk through the interior pipes.

Open the hatch shortcut when you climb out, then return to the central pipe valve and send steam to the pump. The pump drains the flooded cave, letting you reach the fire-marble transport route. Collect the round stone, move it through the platform/elevator sequence, and take it up into Gehn’s laboratory.

In the lab, cut or process the stone as instructed by the machinery, then use the small marble in the calibration device. The important output is your base strike-force value, where the needle lands correctly in the green zone. Record that value. Also record the plus/minus compensation note in the lab. Even if a guide gives an example, your own lab data is the safe answer.

The fire-marble polisher in this lab is also tied to The Watcher. It requires patience: activate the machine, keep it moving when needed, and remain with it long enough for the achievement.

When you reach the rotating dome near Boiler Island, use the lens with the nearby viewer/strobe. You are looking for the invisible paint mark on the moving dome symbol. Press the viewer button when the marked symbol is lined up. Once the dome opens, enter the Starry Expanse, connect the bridge to the central hub, and fire the marble device toward the center. You must eventually do this for all five island domes.

Starry Expanse Basics

The Starry Expanse is both fast travel and the power network for the Golden Dome. Each island dome has three jobs:

  1. Stop the rotating dome with its viewer or lens clue.
  2. Inside the Starry Expanse, rotate or align the bridge so it connects to the center.
  3. Use that island’s marble launcher so the central hub receives one container.

If the Golden Dome later seems inactive, return to the Expanse and check every bridge and launcher. Connecting a bridge without firing the marble, or firing from only some islands, is a common late-game mistake.

Prison Island: Catherine and the Locked Sound Door

From the early Expanse network, go to Prison Island. The building with three sound buttons and a lever is not solvable yet; it needs a five-sound combination found in Age 233. Instead, leave the building and look for the broken guard rail at water level. Follow that exterior path, climb up, and meet Catherine.

After that conversation, inspect the Prison Island totem and viewer area, then stop the island’s rotating dome. Enter the Starry Expanse again, connect the bridge, and fire the marble. Return through the network when you are done.

Survey Island: Shape Grid, Hidden Floor, and the Scribe Chase

Survey Island asks you to think spatially. In the upper room, solve the sliding island-shape puzzle by arranging the pieces into the 5×5 field as the islands are arranged below. This is not just a local puzzle. It tells you where each island belongs on a grid, information you will reuse at the Golden Dome.

After the island-shape puzzle is solved, the golden buttons identify the island pieces. Use the matching buttons in the elevator panel to access the hidden lower floor. This hidden space gives you color and island information for the Golden Dome and contains the underwater wahrk viewer. Bait the wahrk with the colored light controls for Animal instincts.

The Survey Island dome has a damaged local viewer, so use the lens and line up the invisible mark from the correct angle. Connect its Starry Expanse bridge and fire its marble. When you return to the maglev room, do not immediately leave. Turn the maglev around and step out on the other side. Follow the hallway quickly to witness Gehn’s scribe escaping for Giving chase, then ride onward to the back side of Jungle Island.

Survey Island is the bridge between exploration and deduction. Its grid and hidden lower room are key to the Golden Dome.

Jungle Return: Village, Submarine, and All Six Animal Totems

Returning to Jungle Island from the back side opens routes that were not useful on your first visit. Use the elevator in the large wahrk-mouth structure for God’s-eye view, then access the Jungle rotating dome. Stop it with the lens/viewer clue, connect the bridge, and fire another marble into the Expanse hub.

The village and submarine route are the heart of the Moiety animal puzzle. Use the submarine controls to reach the village stops, lower bridges, and manipulate the steam path. One important steam mouth can be closed from above; doing so creates an air bubble below, letting you reach an underwater room and one of the six totems. Water the flower tree until it blooms, because one animal clue is only visible after the bloom appears.

Track the six totems as a checklist:

Totem Area What To Record
Water cave near the first Jungle Island route Use the lens from the right angle and note the animal mark.
Cut-tree clearing Look for the mark formed by the local visual clue and record the totem number.
Deep forest route near the mushroom stairs Use perspective with the lens; this clue is easy to miss if you stand too close.
Village flower tree Water the tree first, then use the lens on the revealed clue.
Underwater steam-bubble room in the village Close the steam mouth above, use the submarine/air-bubble route, and inspect the underwater clue.
Prison Island exterior route Use the nearby telescope/viewing setup with the lens to read the clue.

For each totem, align its eyepiece with the invisible paint and translate the Rivenese number. The animal symbol tells you what stone to press; the Rivenese number tells you when to press it. The exact order is randomized, so a fixed animal list from another save can be wrong.

When you have all six animal-number pairs, go to the Moiety animal-stone room and press the stones in order. If you are achievement hunting, use your branch save before solving it: Not the way you remember it is tied to recalling the old Riven code before completing the current solution. The text sources available for this package confirmed the achievement condition but not a reliable text-only animal sequence, so use a visual 1997-code reference or a video timestamp if you need that one.

Tay: Trap Book, Catherine’s Journal, and Return

After solving the Moiety animal puzzle, you are taken to Tay. You receive a Trap Book and Catherine’s journal. Read Catherine’s journal carefully and screenshot the Rivenese code. It is used later at the final rift machine, and your sequence is not safe to replace with someone else’s.

Before you leave, make a manual save. If you use the Trap Book yourself here, you get a bad ending and This must be the end for you. Reload afterward and continue normally by leaving Tay through the proper route.

Return to Temple Island and Power the Golden Dome

Return to Temple Island, use the revolving room to reach its rotating dome, stop it with the viewer clue, enter the Expanse, connect the bridge, and fire the final marble. When all five marbles have been fired into the central network, the Golden Dome machine can be solved.

The Golden Dome has two linked parts: a marble grid and a slider gauge. Both must be correct before the machine activates.

Golden Dome Marble Grid

The grid comes from Survey Island. Match each island shape to its grid position, then match each island to its marble color. The readable references agree on this general color mapping, but you should still confirm it through your own Survey Island hidden-room clues if a patch or display issue makes something look different:

Island Common Color Clue How To Verify
Temple Island Green Survey Island hidden room and dome-symbol matching.
Jungle Island Red Survey Island hidden room and Jungle dome symbol.
Survey Island Orange/yellow Survey Island grid and hidden color clue.
Prison Island Blue Prison dome symbol and hidden color clue.
Boiler Island Purple Boiler dome symbol and hidden color clue.

Place the colored marbles in the Golden Dome grid according to those island positions. If a light is broken or unclear, use process of elimination after matching the other four.

Golden Dome Slider Gauge

The slider gauge uses Gehn’s lab calibration. Start with the base strike-force value you found by testing the marble device in the lab. Then apply the plus or minus D’ni values from Gehn’s compensation note. This is where your D’ni notes matter: a rotated D’ni symbol can represent a multiple of five, and combined symbols can add together.

The gauge runs from 0 to 25. Calculate one slider value for each island/color, then place the colored tabs accordingly. The tabs cannot overlap, so the final order should make physical sense. Close the machine. If the left-side button glows, the grid and sliders are correct; press it and the machine lowers you toward Age 233. If it does not, check these three mistakes first: one marble is on the wrong island grid square, one D’ni symbol was translated as a base-10 symbol, or the lab base value was copied from a guide instead of your own calibration.

The Golden Dome is not a single code. It is a final exam for the grid, color, number, and fire-marble systems you have been learning.

Age 233: Trapping Gehn and Collecting Late Clues

Make a manual save before linking to Age 233. Gehn’s first meeting is a major branch point. For the normal route, follow the Trap Book sequence when he tells you to use it; the point is to convince him it is safe so he follows and becomes trapped. After he is trapped, do not use the Trap Book again unless you intentionally want the bad-ending achievement where you release him and trap yourself.

For ending cleanup, this save can also cover Perhaps it would be best by quickly accepting Gehn’s command, and Finality by repeatedly refusing him across returns until he loses patience. Reload after each branch.

Once Gehn is trapped, explore Age 233 before leaving. Read Gehn’s journal all the way through. Use the imager and the codes from his room to watch the three recordings for A great deal of history. Listen to the five-note music box pattern and write it down as sound types, not as numbers. That pattern opens Catherine’s prison on Prison Island.

Free Catherine

Return to Prison Island. In the locked building, press the three sound buttons in the five-sound order you heard in Age 233, then pull the lever. If the pattern is correct, the lift arrives and you can free Catherine for Who will link the broken chain?. Listen to the scene and return to Temple Island for the finale.

Final Rift Machine and Good Ending

At the starting area on Temple Island, return to the rift machine near the cage. If you set the pipe lever earlier, it should be ready; otherwise, use the revolving room route to power it now. Open the control panel and enter the D’ni version of Catherine’s Rivenese sequence from her journal. This is a translation puzzle, not a universal fixed code.

Use the machine’s controls to extend and hook the mechanism into the star fissure containment, then raise it to open the rift. If Gehn is trapped and Catherine is free, Atrus can arrive and the path home is clear. Stay through the ending sequence for the final completion achievements.

Finale save After freeing Catherine, before opening the rift. Good-ending safety and any final journal or Expanse cleanup.

Common Mistakes

  • Looking up fixed codes for random puzzles: if the clue comes from Catherine’s journal, the animal totems, the sound box, or the fire-marble calibration, solve it from your own save.
  • Forgetting to turn vehicles around: maglev stations often have a useful exit on the side you do not see when you arrive.
  • Ignoring the lens: many Moiety clues are invisible until you use it from the right angle.
  • Skipping the schoolhouse: the number systems are not optional. The schoolhouse is the cleanest way to learn them.
  • Connecting Starry Expanse bridges but not firing marbles: the Golden Dome needs the central hub powered by all five island devices.
  • Opening the rift too soon: if Catherine is not free, you are on a bad-ending branch.
