Gothic 1 Remake Walkthrough: Chapters, Skills, Achievements, and Cleanup

Gothic 1 Remake is a long, dangerous RPG where the hardest part of a first run is not one single boss. It is knowing when to fight, when to run, where to spend Learning Points, which camp choice changes your route, and which side objectives should be saved before they vanish. This walkthrough gives you a practical route through all six chapters, then folds in starter priorities, lockpicking, climbing, important save points, and achievement cleanup.

Spoiler warning: this guide names every chapter, late-game locations, faction consequences, major quest beats, the Sleeper Temple structure, the final encounter, and several achievement conditions. If you only need early help, read the starter plan and Chapter 1 section first, then return later.

The Colony is open from the start, but it is not level-scaled around a new prisoner. Pick your routes more carefully than your fights.

Best Completion Plan

  1. Make a manual save before committing to a camp in Chapter 1. Old Camp, New Camp, and Swamp Camp each have an achievement, and the first commitment changes the shape of your run.
  2. Do side quests before advancing chapters. Gothic rewards exploration with XP, ore, trainers, recipes, maps, and safer routes; rushing the main quest leaves you weak.
  3. Spend LP around a build instead of buying every skill immediately. Strength melee, Dexterity ranged/thief, and mage routes all work, but scattered LP makes the midgame rough.
  4. Buy or earn maps on a normal first run. If you are specifically chasing Map Sniffer, use a separate collectible-focused save because community references flag one Chapter 2 Old Mine map as highly missable.
  5. Learn climbing before Chapter 5. It is required for important late temple access and several optional routes.
  6. Keep saves before the Old Camp return in Chapter 5, before recharging Uriziel, and before the final trip into the Sleeper’s Halls.
  7. For 100%, expect more than one branch or playthrough. Camp achievements are mutually exclusive without save branching, and permadeath/no-sleep challenge achievements are cleaner as dedicated runs.

Early Game Priorities

Priority Why It Matters What To Watch
Talk to named NPCs Most quest givers have proper names, while generic diggers and guards are usually background characters. Do not assume an NPC is safe just because they talk to you. Save before stealing, fighting, or choosing harsh dialogue.
Use escorts Mordrag and Baal Parvez can help you travel to other camps early, and escort kills still help you progress safely. Let escorts fight monsters you cannot handle yet. This is survival, not cowardice.
Get a map Graham in the Old Camp sells useful maps, including the Colony map. For a normal run, buy one early. For Map Sniffer, delay and follow a map checklist instead.
Secure a basic weapon The Hunter’s Knife, Weathered Axe, early bows, and arena rewards can carry the first few levels. Weapon requirements matter. A strong weapon is useless if your Strength or Dexterity is too low.
Cook food and sleep Raw meat becomes better healing and trade value when cooked, and a bed saves potions. Do not sleep on an Insomnia Champion attempt.
Train parry or a clear damage plan Scatty can teach one-handed combat, including parry, and ranged/magic builds need the same early discipline. Parry timing is tight. Against beasts, block just before the hit lands rather than holding block forever.

Skills You Should Understand Early

Lockpicking

You can attempt locked chests from the start, but lockpicks are scarce and the minigame punishes blind movement. Each plate has a limited set of slots, and some plates push other plates. If a move has nowhere to go, it counts as a mistake; enough mistakes will break the pick. Start by moving plates away from the edges and identifying which ones are independent.

Fingers in the Old Camp can improve your lockpicking and teach pickpocketing after you complete his early request. Community lock guides repeatedly warn that exact lock solutions can change once you train lockpicking. Use fixed sequences only when you are sure your skill level matches the guide.

Early Lock Use Case Caution
Scatty’s chest Needed for Fingers’ Old Camp admission request, A Ring for Fingers. Save first, wait until Scatty is away from the hut, and avoid being seen.
Untrained sequence reported by community references 5 left 1, 3 right 5, 5 left 2, 2 right 2, 5 left 6, 4 left 6, 5 left 6, 3 left 2, 5 left 2, 2 right 2, 5 right 2, 4 right 1, 1 right 2. This is for no lockpicking levels. If it does not match, stop and solve manually instead of burning picks.

Pickpocketing

Pickpocketing is learned from Fingers for LP and ore after his quest. Only NPCs with pouches can be targeted, and the chance improves with Dexterity, stealth, and low target awareness. Failed attempts can start a fight and cost more than the stolen item is worth, so this is best used after a save or as part of a deliberate thief route.

Climbing

Climbing is not just a convenience skill. It gates late routes, including parts of the Sleeper Temple. Find Theron in the Swamp Camp area by going through the hole near the temple route and toward the beach. His Aiming High quest asks for six Northern Dark smoke rolls; Fortuno can supply them through daily rations and purchases. You still need 5 LP to learn the skill.

Chapter 1 is about earning access, not proving you can fight everyone in the camp.

Chapter Route Overview

Chapter Main Goal Save or Prep Advice
1 – Welcome to the Colony Meet the camps, gather reputation, deliver the Fire Mage letter path, and choose a faction. Save before joining. Do as many camp quests as possible first.
2 – The Minecrawlers’ Nest Investigate the Brotherhood, recover the Focus Stone and Almanac, enter the Old Mine, and face the Minecrawler Queen. Bring light sources, healing, and a plan for ranged or magic damage.
3 – Artifacts of Ancient Power Work with the Water Mages and recover the remaining Focus Stones. Carry scrolls, torches, and spare saves before each Focus Stone site.
4 – Xardas Find Xardas, follow the Ur-Shak/Ulu-Mulu route, and open the road toward the Orc Enclave. This is the weakest chapter in the provided detailed references, so use your quest log and map carefully.
5 – The Custodians of the Portal Enter the Orc Enclave, search the Sleeper Temple, collect the five stones, recover Uriziel, and recharge it. Learn climbing first. Save before Old Camp/Gomez decisions and before using the ore pile.
6 – The Sleeper’s Halls Return to the temple, destroy the Sleeper’s five hearts, and finish the game. Enter with your best armor, potions, Uriziel, and a clean final save.

Chapter 1 Walkthrough: Welcome to the Colony

After the opening, follow Diego’s advice and move toward the Old Camp. Loot carefully on the road, but do not pick fights with everything you see. Small enemies such as molerats, scavengers, and early goblins are reasonable targets once you have a weapon; stronger beasts and armed convicts should be avoided until you have levels, armor, or a companion.

At the Old Camp, speak with Diego, Thorus, Mordrag, Fingers, Sly, Dexter, Scatty, Graham, and other named NPCs. Your goal is to collect approval and experience while learning the camp economy. Buy maps from Graham on a normal run, pay protection if it prevents camp-wide hostility, and keep a manual save before theft quests.

For Old Camp admission, you will likely handle several small requests: Mordrag can be pushed out of the camp by letting him escort you to the New Camp instead of fighting him; Fingers wants Scatty’s ring; Sly points you toward Nek; and Diego checks whether you have earned enough reputation. These quests teach the core rhythm of Gothic: talk, prepare, save, then act.

Do not join a camp the moment you qualify. Visit the New Camp and Swamp Camp first, use escorts for safe travel, and complete easy errands for XP. Once you join, Chapter 2 begins and some opportunities shift. If you want all three camp achievements, keep a branch save before the final commitment.

Chapter 2 Walkthrough: The Minecrawlers’ Nest

Chapter 2 starts after your camp choice and quickly pulls you into the Brotherhood’s plan. Raven points you toward the Swamp Camp, where Cor Kalom and the Templars are looking into Caine’s disappearance. Search Caine’s hut area, talk through the Swamp Camp chain, and follow the lead to the Abandoned Mine near the Exchange Zone.

Bring torches or Light scrolls into the Abandoned Mine. The important early obstacle is an underwater winch that opens the heavy iron door. Dive, recover it, place it on the mechanism, then continue through the flooded route. Deeper inside, defeat the undead orc, inspect Caine, and take the strange amulet back to Cor Kalom and Y’Berion.

The next stretch sends you after the first Focus Stone and the Almanac. Nyras leads you to the Focus Stone site, then turns hostile after the vision. For the Almanac, talk to Milten and Talas, search the dark cave, and bring the book back to the Swamp Camp. Take rewards that support your build; scrolls and potions are often more useful than a pile of ore if you are undergeared.

The Old Mine sequence is the chapter’s real test. Talk to Cor Angar first, then go down through the mine, gather the Templars, and look for Ian’s missing cog in the deeper mine area. Once the collapsed tunnel is handled, the Minecrawler Queen appears in two phases. Firebolt or another safe ranged option makes this fight much easier. After you loot the eggs, return for the Great Awakening ritual, then follow the fallout into the Orc Graveyard and Baal Lukor’s route.

Mines and ruins punish players who forget light sources. Treat torches and Light scrolls as progression tools.

Chapter 3 Walkthrough: Artifacts of Ancient Power

After the Swamp Camp crisis, report back and follow the Water Mages’ plan. Saturas wants the remaining Focus Stones, and your friends split across the major sites to help. Milten gives you the map, but every Focus Stone asks for a different kind of problem-solving.

Monastery Ruins

Gorn helps at the Monastery Ruins. Search the ravine room for supplies, including the transformation tool needed to slip through a small opening. Once inside the monastery, clear threats, use light against the darker interior, and take the Focus Stone. A juvenile troll can appear after the stone; pull it toward Gorn rather than dueling it alone.

Troll Canyon

Milten’s Focus Stone route revolves around a full-sized troll. Follow him to safety, collect the required troll fur, let him prepare the Shrink Monster option, then use it before fighting. After that, use the paired lever setup and Telekinesis to complete the bridge gap and claim the stone.

Stone Circle

Diego’s site uses torches, skeleton ambushes, and a zombie puzzle. Light the pillars, enter the hidden passage, and pay attention to the three blue wall symbols. The point is not to brute-force the zombie; you need the room’s mechanism to finish the encounter.

Mountain Fortress

Lester’s Focus Stone route is the most exploration-heavy. Expect traps, locked paths, and a puzzle-oriented fortress route rather than a straight fight. Search rooms thoroughly, keep a save before operating mechanisms, and avoid leaving before you have both the stone and any quest-relevant evidence you came for.

When all Focus Stones are returned, the plan shifts and Xardas becomes the next major lead. Before pushing onward, finish Chapter 3 side content such as the Rogues’ Camp, Chromanin start points, and any trainer purchases you can afford.

Chapter 4 Walkthrough: Xardas

Chapter 4 begins after the Focus Stone work and the Water Mage plan collapse into the search for Xardas. The supplied detailed sources cover this chapter less completely than Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, so treat this section as a route checkpoint rather than a room-by-room map.

Your main chain is: reach Xardas, deal with the golem route to his tower, follow the lead toward Ur-Shak, and work through the Ulu-Mulu path that lets you approach the Orc Enclave without simply fighting every orc in the valley. If the quest log points you toward the Old Citadel or Free Mine, finish those objectives before trying to force the Orc Enclave early.

This is also a good chapter for cleanup. The Free Mine and New Camp routes can support armor upgrades, crawler plate armor, and late trainer access. Save before faction-sensitive decisions, because Chapter 5 sends you into Old Camp and Orc territory situations that can close or transform earlier relationships.

Chapter 5 Walkthrough: The Custodians of the Portal

Use the Ulu-Mulu to enter the Orc Enclave. You may still have to prove yourself in a duel, then speak with Ur-Shak and the orc leaders to learn how to reach the temple. One route is direct violence, but the more controlled path uses Muk. Give Muk Meatbug Ragout to open his secret route, and make sure you already know climbing.

Inside the Sleeper Temple, think of the first visit as a five-stone dungeon. The first hall has three wheel controls tied to glyphs on a pillar. Check the side room with rotating statues, match each statue to its symbol, then reproduce those symbols with the wheels to open the path.

The five stone route has several easy-to-miss gates:

Stone Key Step Common Mistake
First Solve the dial room around the coffin and defeat the awakened undead orc. Leaving without looting the body for the stone.
Second Shoot the glowing circular device to open the two-light gate. Trying only melee interactions on a target meant for arrows or projectiles.
Third Use broken-lever/pillar movement to reach the red-light route, then disable spike rooms by shooting the red lights. Running through spikes before looking upward at the trigger.
Fourth Activate the lava flow, defeat three demons, and cross the bridge that forms from their souls. Taking Uriziel and teleporting away before checking whether one stone is still missing.
Fifth Return to the blue-light gate area, climb the hidden route, open the lower gates, and reach the altar path. Arriving without the climbing skill.

Once you have Uriziel and all five stones, return to Xardas. He sends you to Milten and the New Camp ore pile to restore the sword’s power. Bring Gorn into the plan, avoid killing guards if the dialogue asks for restraint, then let Milten complete the ritual. The New Camp can become hostile after the ore pile is used, so teleport out immediately rather than trying to shop, sleep, or wander.

By Chapter 5, access is usually the puzzle: the right food, language, skill, or faction token can prevent a costly fight.

Chapter 6 Walkthrough: The Sleeper’s Halls

Before the final chapter, upgrade your gear. The Ancient Ore Armor can be obtained through Gomez’s room route in Chapter 5, while mage builds should consider the Robes of the Dark Arts from Xardas’s Sunken Tower. Bring healing, mana support if relevant, and enough confidence in your weapon route that you are not relying on random scrolls for every fight.

Return to the Sleeper Temple. If Umakhal follows and blocks Muk’s secret route, use the warchief hut setup to leave him behind, then circle back toward Muk’s entrance. Inside, expect Templars and temple enemies in areas you crossed earlier. Push to the final platform, meet Xardas, and use Uriziel to pierce the deeper barrier.

The finale is built around the Sleeper’s five hearts. Each heart changes the encounter:

  1. The first dream sends harpies. Clear them, return to the altar, and destroy the first heart.
  2. The second dream uses orcs. Keep space, heal before returning to the altar, then destroy the second heart.
  3. The third dream follows Mad Mud through blood trails, a deep fall, minecrawlers, and the Minecrawler Queen before you can destroy the third heart.
  4. The fourth dream turns your companions into boss encounters. Diego uses range, Gorn uses lightning, Milten must be damaged indirectly by baiting his spells into the black bowls, Lester can knock you into swampsharks, and Xardas cycles through pillar summons.
  5. The fifth heart is guarded after the dreams stop. Defeat the transformed Cor Kalom, then destroy the final heart to end the Sleeper’s threat.

Do not rush the Milten phase in the fourth dream. If you swing at the shield and ignore the room, you will waste resources. Stand where his fire spell can hit the black structures, dodge at the cast, and let the arena do the damage.

Achievement And Cleanup Roadmap

Steam lists 42 achievements for Gothic 1 Remake. The public achievement page confirms the names and broad requirements, while community guides add route advice for missables. Use this table as a cleanup map, not as a replacement for your in-game quest log.

Goal Achievements Or Content Plan
Camp branches Gomez’ Paperboy, Lowlife, Cult Loon Save before joining a camp. Without save branching, these require separate commitments.
Story completion Sect-ary, Focus Maniac, My new friend the Necromancer, Orc Culture Ninja, The Sleeper awakens…Not! These follow chapter completion, though Chapter 1 camp choice and Chapter 5 access can alter your route.
Chapter 5 Old Camp cleanup No gate can stop you, Mercy Over Madness, Armor-geddon Save before returning to Old Camp and before resolving Gomez. Mercy and armor choices should be handled deliberately.
Side quest chains The Fixer, True Stranger, The Anatomaniac Start long chains early. The Fixer is tied to Syra-related Old Camp work, True Stranger follows the Chromanin book order, and The Anatomaniac uses Cavalorn’s book quests.
Thief cleanup Garrett, Master Garrett Learn pickpocketing and open enough locks over the run. Save before risky thefts and do not rely on one lock solution after training changes.
Build mastery Adept of Arms, String Wielder, Abracadabra, Overachiever These compete for LP. Plan a build route instead of trying to master everything casually on a first blind run.
Maps and collections Map Sniffer, Transformer, Bookworm, Pimp my armor Use a checklist. Map Sniffer is especially sensitive because one Old Mine map is tied to Cor Kalom’s Chapter 2 route.
Challenge runs Insomnia Champion, No time to die Keep these for dedicated runs. No-sleep conflicts with a comfortable first playthrough, and permadeath should be planned around conservative difficulty and routes.

Map Sniffer Notes

For a normal run, buying a Colony map early is one of the best quality-of-life moves in the game. For Map Sniffer, community collectible references warn that you need all maps in one run and should be careful with Cor Kalom’s Old Mine map in Chapter 2. If you are chasing this achievement, make a separate save and track at least these categories: Old Mine map from Kalom, Graham’s Old Mine map, Colony map, Old Camp map, New Camp map, Swamp Camp map, Cliff Route map, marked Lighthouse map, Focus Stones map, Orc Territory drawing, Orc Enclave map, and Sleeper Temple sketch.

Common Mistakes

  • Fighting too early: the remake expects you to avoid some enemies until your stats and armor catch up.
  • Joining a camp too soon: do reputation work in all camps before committing, unless you are role-playing a strict route.
  • Ignoring LP costs: trainers are powerful, but every fun skill delays weapon, attribute, or magic growth.
  • Skipping light sources: mines, caves, and ruins become much harder when you cannot read the room.
  • Arriving at Chapter 5 without climbing: the temple route makes this painful.
  • Trusting every fixed lock code: lock behavior can differ after training, and community pages repeatedly warn about skill-level differences.
  • Sleeping on a challenge save: one achievement specifically requires completing the game without sleep.

Late Gothic fights are won before combat starts: armor, saves, scrolls, potions, and the right route all matter.
