Scale the Depths Guide: Best Upgrades, Customer Favorites, Secrets, and Achievements

Official Scale the Depths screenshot showing the fishing and prep loop

Scale the Depths looks like a cozy fishing loop at first: catch a fish, scale it, feed a customer, buy an upgrade, and go again. The trick is that almost every part of that loop becomes a completion system. Customers have favorite fish, prep quality affects money, rod length gates secrets, each location has its own cleanup checklist, and several achievements only unlock if you track fish, bait, boats, decals, cosmetics, variants, and perfect prep from the start.

This guide is written as a practical route for real players rather than a rigid speedrun script. It covers the best upgrade logic, how to plan dives, the four location checklists, high-value customer favorites, legendary fish cleanup, the Point Nemo door puzzle, and the achievement cleanup order. It also notes where source coverage is based on community cross-checking rather than official route data.

Spoiler warning: this guide names all four locations, legendary fish, important collectibles, customer pairings, and late-game achievement goals.

Official Scale the Depths screenshot showing the fishing and prep loop
The whole game is built around a simple loop, but the best runs separate money, exploration, and cleanup instead of mixing every goal into one dive.

Best First-Run Plan

  1. In every new location, buy rod or line reach first unless a different problem is clearly blocking you. Depth is the main gate for better fish, side routes, switches, messages, artifacts, and legendary fish.
  2. Use three dive types: money dives, exploration dives, and target dives. A money dive should fill your bag with valuable fish. An exploration dive should ignore weak fish and check paths, bottles, switches, and artifacts. A target dive should focus on one fish, bait, blueprint, or missing collectible.
  3. Prep slowly until your payouts are stable. Perfect prep is not only a money bonus; it becomes a full achievement track later.
  4. Ask customers about preferences and check the CARP Manual after serving. Favorite fish fill bars faster and help tips, while disliked fish waste high-value catches.
  5. Do not leave a location just because the next one unlocks. Area progress and true 100% cleanup are different. GPS counts, records, artifacts, baits, boat items, cosmetics, and legendary fish all matter.
  6. Spend local money before moving on. Multiple references agree that cash and most tool upgrades reset between locations, so there is little value in saving a pile of coins for the next world.
  7. Leave final achievement cleanup until after the location checklists are clean. It is much easier to finish Customer Connoisseur, Master of Bait, Boat Collector, Decal Delighter, Fashion Fan, Elite Explorer, True Fisherbot, and Prep Expert after every area has been methodically swept.

Core Loop: What Actually Moves Progress

Scale the Depths is not an idle fishing game. You actively steer the hook, damage fish, bring catches to the prep station, scale them cleanly, and serve customers. The money you earn is then converted into better reach, damage, prep tools, and storage. Each upgrade lets you push into deeper or stranger routes.

Part of the Loop Why It Matters Common Mistake
Fishing Better fish fund upgrades and satisfy bigger customers. Chasing deep or legendary fish before your line and hook can handle them.
Prep Clean scaling improves value and feeds into perfect-prep achievements. Scraping too fast after buying a better knife, then damaging valuable catches.
Serving Customer favorites fill bars faster and can create major tip jumps. Giving a legendary or high-value fish to a customer who barely needs progress.
Upgrades Rod, hook, knife, storage, and utility tools open routes and speed cleanup. Buying cosmetics or knife upgrades while line reach is still blocking secrets.
Exploration Messages, artifacts, baits, switches, boat items, and cosmetics drive 100% completion. Fishing for money during a cleanup dive and filling the bag before reaching the missing item.

Upgrade Priority

The safest rule is to buy the upgrade that solves the problem in front of you. If you cannot reach a route, improve rod or line. If a fish fight takes too long, improve hook damage. If prep is costing you money, improve the knife. If your bag ends good dives early, buy storage. If weak fish keep interrupting secret runs, use repellent or exploration-focused bait.

Upgrade Best Use Priority
Rod / line reach Unlocks deeper fish, collectibles, switches, routes, and legendary layers. Very high early in every location
Bucket / storage Lets you bring back more fish or keep space for a target catch. High after your reach opens better fish
Knife Improves prep speed and makes large or messy fish less punishing. High once prep becomes the bottleneck
Hook damage Shortens fights against large, armored, and legendary fish. Medium to high; mandatory before legendary attempts
Repellent / exploration bait Keeps weak fish out of the way while you hunt secrets or a specific target. Situational but excellent for cleanup
Boats, decals, cosmetics Useful for collection achievements and style, but not route power. Cleanup priority unless an unlock specifically requires them

How To Plan Each Dive

A lot of frustration comes from trying to do everything in one descent. If you start a run hoping to make money, find a bottle, catch a legendary fish, and feed the next customer, your bag will fill at the wrong time and you will leave with half a plan finished. Pick one dive type before casting.

Dive Type Main Goal How To Play It
Money dive Bring back valuable fish for upgrades. Catch fish you can prep reliably. Return before the bag fills with low-value catches.
Exploration dive Find messages, switches, baits, artifacts, blueprints, decals, and cosmetics. Ignore most fish, use repellent when available, and sweep every suspicious route before leaving.
Target dive Catch one legendary fish or collect one missing item. Start with empty storage, take the shortest known route, and do not get distracted.

Fish Prep: How To Stop Losing Money

Fish prep is where early players quietly lose a lot of progress. The game rewards steady movement more than speed. Move the knife calmly, watch for special hazards, and treat large fish as a sequence of small sections rather than one frantic scrape.

Prep Problem What To Do Why It Works
Scaling damage Move slower and keep the blade under control. Fast, erratic scraping damages the fish and lowers value.
Long fish Pan the view and work section by section. Legendary fish are easy to ruin if you rush the final cuts.
Parasites Approach calmly before they hide or scatter. Panic movement usually makes the phase take longer.
Barnacles Use enough force to break them, then return to careful scaling. Barnacles need commitment, but the rest of the fish still punishes sloppiness.
Perfect-prep cleanup Perfect each new species as you encounter it. Prep Expert is much easier if you track species during the run instead of guessing at the end.

Perfect prep is not a cosmetic flex. It affects money now and achievement cleanup later.

Location Roadmap

The full release is built around four main fishing spots. The safest completionist approach is to treat each location as its own mini-campaign: rebuild useful upgrades, finish the main customer route, then clear secrets before the final legendary fish cleanup.

Order Location Main Completion Focus Most Common Miss
1 Loch Ness Learn the loop, reach 23/23 customers and 7/7 treasures, catch Beithir, feed Nessie. Leaving after the next area unlocks while GPS counts are still incomplete.
2 Outer Banks Clear 5 messages, 6 artifacts, 2 baits, 2 cosmetics, boat blueprint, blue switches, Lost Dimetrodon. Missing Sonar Receiver in the bush pocket before the southwestern shortcut.
3 Huatulco Solve pressure-plate routes, collect 4 artifacts, 2 baits, boat items, cosmetics, Hoga. Skipping a bait, boat decal, or late item while following the block puzzle route.
4 Point Nemo Solve the three-hint door puzzle, clear switch chains, collect baits/artifacts, catch Apophis 99942. Sewing Needle, one switch, Sextant angle, or Apophis prep.

Loch Ness 100% Route

Loch Ness teaches the full game: fishing, scaling, customer preferences, GPS tracking, treasures, artifacts, bait, switches, and the first legendary customer route. It is also where many players learn the wrong lesson, because the next location can unlock before Loch Ness is actually complete.

Loch Ness Priorities

  1. Buy rod or line reach first. Hidden routes, switch branches, treasure paths, and the Beithir depth all depend on reach.
  2. Buy bucket and hook upgrades once money fish are available. Hook damage matters for bigger fish and Beithir.
  3. Feed customers while checking the CARP Manual for likes and dislikes. Keep serving until GPS shows 23/23 customers.
  4. Sweep treasures and artifacts. GPS should show 7/7 treasures, but also check records for messages and named artifacts such as Sputnik-style items and Nessie-related collectibles.
  5. Hit switch branches, especially the golden switch route, before assuming the area is done.
  6. Catch Beithir only when your line and hook can handle a deep, long fight.
  7. Save Beithir for Nessie. Do not waste the legendary catch on a small customer who barely needs progress.
  8. Spend leftover coins on useful local upgrades before leaving, since money and many upgrades do not carry cleanly into the next location.

Beithir and Nessie

The key Loch Ness legendary route revolves around Beithir, which is the catch you should save for Nessie. Treat it as a target dive. Enter with strong hook damage, enough line, and empty storage. Use repellent if small fish keep filling your bag on the way down. When you find Beithir, lead its path instead of chasing every turn from behind. After the catch, prep slowly across the full body and feed it to Nessie for the legendary customer route.

Loch Ness Troubleshooting

Problem Likely Cause Fix
22/23 customers A late customer has not cycled in or been satisfied. Keep fishing and serving in Loch Ness instead of searching only for secret items.
6/7 treasures A treasure is behind grass, a switch branch, or a deeper route. Do exploration-only dives with repellent and recheck every branch after switches.
No Beithir sighting Line reach is not deep enough or the dive is being interrupted. Upgrade rod/line, enter with empty storage, and stop catching random fish on the way.
Nessie barely fills You are feeding normal fish. Bring a cleanly prepped Beithir.

Outer Banks 100% Route

Outer Banks is where the game starts hiding completion behind route changes. Line reach matters a lot, and several items are packed around shortcuts, bushes, boulders, and blue switches. If the next location seems locked or progress is stuck, recheck Outer Banks before blaming a bug.

Outer Banks Checklist

Category What To Confirm Player Tip
Messages 5 messages in bottles. They are split across the opening, blue-switch, and late boat routes.
Artifacts Rat King Plush, Bio-specimen Containment Unit, the bush-hidden Sonar Receiver, Jar of Dirt, Canned Bread, and Spanish Doubloon. If you are at 5/6, check Sonar Receiver first.
Baits Compass and Spring. Compass is earlier; Spring is late, near the blue-switch chain.
Routes First shortcut, boulder route, southwestern shortcut, Blue Switch 1/2 and 2/2. Do not activate a switch and immediately leave. The nearby item is often the reason the switch matters.
Collection 2 cosmetics and 1 boat blueprint. Grab the boat blueprint before your final Lost Dimetrodon attempt.
Legendary fish Lost Dimetrodon caught and prepped. Spot the route early, but save the real catch for a focused final dive.

Sonar Receiver

The Sonar Receiver is the Outer Banks item most likely to waste your time. It is in a bush-clearing pocket before the southwestern path shortcut, after the first cosmetic route and before the Jar of Dirt / Canned Bread chain. Do not cut only enough plants to pass through. Clear the full pocket until the artifact appears.

Lost Dimetrodon

Lost Dimetrodon should be a final target dive, not a bonus catch during your first pass. Clear messages, baits, artifacts, cosmetics, switches, shortcuts, and the boat blueprint first. Then return with enough line, stronger hook damage, and empty storage. Lead the fish ahead of its movement. If the fight takes too long, leave, upgrade, and come back through the shortest route.

Official Scale the Depths screenshot showing an underwater route with fish and hazards
Outer Banks and later areas reward focused cleanup dives. Stop filling the bag if your actual goal is a hidden artifact or shortcut.

Huatulco 100% Route

Huatulco changes the rhythm. Instead of only going deeper, you solve repeated block-and-pressure-plate doors while collecting messages, artifacts, baits, cosmetics, boat items, and the legendary fish Hoga. If a door refuses to open, the block is usually not fully centered on the plate or you are using the wrong plate direction for that room.

Pressure-Plate Logic

Door Step What To Do If It Feels Bugged
Southwest plate Push the block onto the lower-left plate. Make sure the block covers the plate, not just its edge.
Southeast plate Move the block onto the lower-right plate. Recenter it before leaving the room.
Straight-south plate Push directly down onto the south plate. Check that you are not solving a repeated-looking room with the wrong direction.
West plate After the Red Switch section, push the block left to the west plate. Confirm the switch route is open, then check block position again.

Huatulco Checklist

  1. Grab opening messages, the early boat blueprint, and the first money chest before the puzzle route gets busy.
  2. Solve the southwest and southeast pressure-plate doors.
  3. Pick up the early cosmetic in the side pocket.
  4. Use the straight-south door to reach the Quetzalcoatl Statue.
  5. Continue through the middle route, Red Switch, and west plate step.
  6. In the dense middle chain, collect the message, Rubber Ball, Aztec Sun Stone, and Shark Tooth bait.
  7. Use the Yellow Switch route and grab the second cosmetic before Blue Switch 1/2 pulls you onward.
  8. Activate Blue Switch 1/2 and 2/2, collect the nearby message, and pick up the Coffee Cup artifact.
  9. Do the late collection route for Pouch bait, the boat decal, and the cloth chest.
  10. Catch and prep Hoga last.

Hoga

Hoga is Huatulco’s legendary fish and should be the last task in the area. Go in light, with a strong hook and enough line. It moves in wide arcs, so place the hook where the fish is going rather than where it just was. When prepping, pan across the full body and slow down around fins and edges. The catch does not count cleanly for completion if you botch the prep or leave before finishing it.

Point Nemo 100% Route

Point Nemo is the final and most layered cleanup area. It combines a door puzzle, blue switches, red switches, a yellow shortcut, late baits, deep artifacts, a boat blueprint, a cosmetic, and Apophis 99942. Treat it as multiple focused dives. Trying to solve the door, collect everything, and catch Apophis in one run is asking for missed items.

Point Nemo Checklist

Category What To Confirm Common Miss
Messages 5 messages in bottles. Late route bottle after you are focused on Apophis.
Door puzzle Three sea hint signs, then the three door switches. Guessing after only one or two hints.
Switches Blue Switch 1/3, 2/3, 3/3; Red Switch 1/2, 2/2; Yellow Switch. Skipping the yellow shortcut before repeated Apophis attempts.
Artifacts Loaded Support Sphere, Sextant, Toy Submarine, and any final artifact shown in your tracker. Turning back after the Sextant room instead of continuing to Toy Submarine.
Baits Magnet and Sewing Needle. Sewing Needle near a later message route.
Collection Boat blueprint and Point Nemo cosmetic. Assuming artifacts are the only completion items.
Legendary fish Apophis 99942 caught and prepped. Forcing the fight with weak line or hook damage.

Point Nemo Door Puzzle

The door puzzle is not a block puzzle. Find three sea hints first. Each hint shows a white-dot position: left, middle, or right. Record the positions in the order you find the hints, then return to the door and press the left, middle, or right switches in that same order.

Do not assume another player’s switch order will match yours. The useful rule is the method, not a fixed code. If the door does not open, leave the area to reset the puzzle state, recheck all three hint signs, and enter the sequence cleanly.

Apophis 99942

Apophis 99942 sits deep enough that line management becomes the real fight. Open the yellow shortcut first so failed attempts do not require a full reroute. Bank nearby artifacts before the legendary attempt, enter with empty storage, and do not fight random fish on the descent. If the line warning builds, back off and reposition instead of pulling from a bad angle. After the catch, prep slowly; the legendary route is not finished until the fish is cleanly prepared.

Official Scale the Depths screenshot showing a late underwater area
Point Nemo is less about one secret and more about sequencing: hints, switches, deep collectibles, then Apophis.

High-Value Customer Favorites

The CARP Manual should be your final in-game source for customer likes and dislikes. The table below focuses on important or commonly referenced favorite pairings that are useful for route planning. Community preference lists were readable but not official, and one Steam Community page carried a removed/incompatible banner, so use this as a practical checklist rather than a replacement for your own manual.

Customer Favorite Fish Why It Matters
Eurasian Otter Eurasian Minnow Easy early preference to learn the system.
Great Cormorant Perch A useful Loch Ness pairing while building early money.
Osprey Cucumber Smelt Good reminder that hints often point to fish traits.
Grey Heron European Eel One of the clearest hint-based customer solves.
Grey Seal Atlantic Salmon Worth remembering because salmon is valuable in Loch Ness routing.
Selkie Brown Trout Later Loch Ness customer progress.
Kelpie Arctic Char Color-based hint; do not waste the wrong red fish if your manual shows otherwise.
Nessie Beithir Save the legendary fish for the legendary customer.
Belted Kingfisher Bluegill Useful Outer Banks preference.
Alligator Lost Dimetrodon Do not spend the legendary catch casually.
White-Nosed Coati Panamic Sergeant Major Huatulco pairing noted by multiple preference references.
Quetzalcoatl Hoga Huatulco legendary customer route.
Kraken Fangtooth or Pacific Black Dragon Late-game customer value and Point Nemo planning.
Orca Giant Oarfish Another late high-value pairing to confirm in your CARP Manual.

Collectibles and Secrets Checklist

For 100% completion, track more than fish. Messages, artifacts, baits, boats, decals, cosmetics, switches, shortcuts, treasure counts, and legendary fish can all block achievements. Use the table below as the final pre-departure check for each location.

Location Checklist Before Leaving Last Thing To Recheck
Loch Ness 23/23 customers, 7/7 treasures, messages, artifacts, bait, golden switch route, Beithir, Nessie. CARP Manual records, not just the GPS screen.
Outer Banks 5 messages, 6 artifacts, Compass, Spring, 2 cosmetics, boat blueprint, blue switches, Lost Dimetrodon. Sonar Receiver in the full bush pocket.
Huatulco Messages, 4 artifacts, Shark Tooth, Pouch, boat blueprint, boat decal, cosmetics, pressure plates, Hoga. Late Pouch/boat decal route after Coffee Cup.
Point Nemo 5 messages, door hints, blue/red/yellow switches, Loaded Support Sphere, Sextant, Toy Submarine, Magnet, Sewing Needle, boat blueprint, cosmetic, Apophis 99942. Sewing Needle and Toy Submarine path.

Achievement Roadmap

Steam lists 25 achievements for Scale the Depths. Unlock percentages change over time, but the current pattern is clear: early loop achievements are common, while full prep, cosmetics, variants, bait, boats, decals, and all-level data are the long tail.

Stage Goal Achievements To Watch
1 Learn the loop: catch, perfect-prep one fish, feed a favorite, earn a tip, try bait. First Catch!, Perfection!, A Favorite Found!, Tip Obtained!, A Bait and Switch.
2 Finish each main location route and satisfy legendary customers. Loch Ness / Huatulco / Outer Banks / Point Nemo legendary fish and customer achievements.
3 Finish the main game. Crowning Achievement!
4 Clean every location checklist. Elite Explorer, Master of Bait, Boat Collector, Decal Delighter, Fashion Fan.
5 Finish fish, prep, and customer cleanup. True Fisherbot, Prep Expert, Customer Connoisseur, Elusive Customer Entertainer.
6 Buy everything once route access is stable. Deep Pockets.

Hard Achievement Cleanup

Achievement Requirement Best Cleanup Method
Prep Expert Scale every fish in the game perfectly. Perfect each species when you first catch it. Legendary fish are the worst time to learn careful prep.
True Fisherbot Catch every fish in the game. Use each area checklist and recheck silhouettes or manual gaps before moving on.
Fashion Fan Get every character cosmetic. Pick up cosmetics during route cleanup, even when they look optional.
Decal Delighter Get every decal. Do not skip boat decals while chasing artifacts or legendary fish.
Elusive Customer Entertainer Find and feed every customer variant. Save variant cleanup until normal customer lists are stable.
Master of Bait Obtain every bait. Grab bait as part of each location route instead of searching for all bait at the end.
Boat Collector Collect every boat. Mark every boat blueprint before leaving a location.
Elite Explorer Get all data in every level. Clear messages, artifacts, treasures, switches, baits, boats, cosmetics, and legendary fish together.
Deep Pockets Get every shop upgrade. Buy route-enabling upgrades first, then return for full buyout once the area is under control.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving early: the next location unlocking is not proof that the current location is 100% complete.
  • Saving local money: spend before traveling, because money and most tool upgrades are location-based.
  • Over-fishing during cleanup: when hunting messages or artifacts, weak fish are distractions.
  • Feeding legendary fish casually: Beithir, Lost Dimetrodon, Hoga, and Apophis 99942 matter for legendary routes and cleanup.
  • Assuming Point Nemo has a fixed code: solve the door by reading your own three sea hints and pressing left/middle/right in that order.
  • Buying knife first every time: a better knife cannot reach a route that line length has not unlocked.
  • Saving perfect prep for the end: Prep Expert is much easier if you perfect species as they appear.
  • Ignoring optional-looking items: boat decals, cosmetics, baits, and blueprints feed achievements.
