Monster Hunter Stories 3 Walkthrough: Main Quest Route, Boss Counters, and Cleanup Guide

Official Monster Hunter Stories 3 screenshot showing riders and monsters in a bright field

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is a long, systems-heavy RPG, so the cleanest way through it is not to sprint from quest marker to quest marker. The main story is split across five big arcs, the battles keep changing attack patterns through transformations, and many of the trophies ask you to understand eggs, habitats, side stories, Poogies, Catavan Stands, decorations, and late-game cleanup. This walkthrough gives you a practical story route, the boss counters that matter, and a cleanup plan that keeps you from discovering too late that you ignored an important system.

Spoiler warning: this guide names all five story arcs, all 30 main quest chapters, major bosses, late-game regions, final encounters, and achievement categories. If you are early in Azuria and only want a light nudge, read the combat basics and the first arc, then come back by chapter.

The main story is linear by chapter, but the RPG systems around it reward steady cleanup instead of rushing.

Best Route at a Glance

The story route below follows the chapter order verified from readable walkthrough references. You do not need to over-grind every chapter, but you should stop at each new camp or hub long enough to unlock facilities, check the Smithy, gather eggs, and update your side story list.

Arc Chapters Core Regions Main Prep
Azuria 1-10 Azuria Castle, Sunpetal Plains, Ashen Pass, Ancient Battlegrounds, Broadleaf Basin, Wyverian Gate Learn Power/Technical/Speed, unlock fast travel, start Poogie and Catavan cleanup, and build your first stable team.
Cataracts 11-14 Canalta Timberland, Sheparden, Blessing Hill, Dragonreach Mountains Use camps properly, cure Sleep and Skillseal, learn Canyne Eggs and Excursions, and prepare for Yama Tsukami.
Galyad 15-21 Muddled Marsh, Tarkuan, Galyad, Ministry of Eggs, Death’s Maw Bring answers to mud, fire, webs, and thunder. Start thinking about endangered monsters and rare gene farming.
Sacrosanctum 22-23 Glacier Caps, Old Capital Road, Old Capital Lazlion, Sacrosanctum Refresh Fire, Dragon, and Ice options. Complete unlocked side stories before pushing deep into the arc.
Lazlion 24-30 Azuria, Small Border Fort, Terra Nativitas, Sacrosanctum Make a manual save before the no-return warning, finish side stories, and stock for chained Elder Dragon pressure.

Before You Begin

  • Keep rotating saves. The final chapter warns you before the point of no return, but earlier manual saves are still useful for side-story cleanup, monster farming, and achievement experiments.
  • Use Catavan Stands every time you find one. They support saving, fast travel, and time changes once the relevant functions unlock. They also matter for completion cleanup.
  • Do not ignore the Ranger Mess. Meals are one of the easiest ways to smooth a boss that is otherwise one level or one resistance check away from being comfortable.
  • Upgrade gear in waves. The Smithy appears early, and maxing equipment links into decorations and achievement cleanup. Keep one serious weapon path moving instead of spreading materials everywhere.
  • Collect eggs even when you like your current team. Stories 3 is not just about one favorite Monstie. Dens, retreats, endangered species, environmental skills, and Rites of Channeling all become long-term progression.
  • Treat Steam Community detail guides cautiously. Several were readable but displayed Steam removed/incompatible banners during source capture, so this article uses them only as cross-checks for systems such as decorations, dens, skill affinities, and achievement cleanup.

Combat Basics That Carry the Whole Game

Power, Technical, and Speed

The Head-to-Head triangle is still the backbone of combat: Power beats Technical, Technical beats Speed, and Speed beats Power. The mistake new players make is memorizing only the monster’s opening behavior. Many bosses change type when enraged, when a body state changes, or when a special condition appears. If a fight suddenly feels wrong, stop attacking for damage and identify the current state.

Double Attacks and Synchro Rush

If your Rider and Monstie target the same enemy and win the right kind of Head-to-Head, you can trigger a Double Attack. Synchro Rush becomes available when a lone monster is toppled and gives a major damage and Kinship advantage. In practice, this means you should not always spam active skills. Sometimes the best turn is a plain attack that lines up with your Monstie’s behavior.

Wyvernsoul and Transformations

The Wyvernsoul Gauge represents a monster’s fighting spirit. Active skills, Kinship Skills, mounted attacks, part breaks, and topple windows all help drain it. When a monster transforms, its attack type and part behavior can change. Watch the monster state first, then pick your counter. This matters from the early Velocidrome lessons all the way to Aenshin.

Feral Monsters and Backlash

Feral Monsters carry crystallized parts. Breaking those parts weakens Feral Attacks and can make the Wyvernsoul Gauge easier to pressure, but careless hits can trigger Backlash counters. The safest rule is simple: if a guide or NPC points to a safe part first, follow that order. If you do not know the order, test with defensive turns and healing ready instead of hammering every glowing part at once.

States matter more than raw level. The same monster can demand different counters after it enrages or transforms.

Azuria Walkthrough: Chapters 1-10

Chapter 1: The Prince / Princess of Azuria

The opening chapter is mostly orientation. Leave Broadleaf Basin with Simon, cross Mirror Lake by riding the updraft with Rathalos, meet Rudy after landing, and proceed toward the throne room. Use this chapter to learn camera control, movement, Catavan Stand basics, and the layout of the Castle Base. There is no need to grind yet; your main goal is to understand where the Base, throne route, and early facilities sit.

Chapter 2: Audience

After King Arken orders you toward peace talks with Vermeil, return to the Ranger Base and start Thea and Simon’s inaugural expedition. At the Base, note the Ranger Mess and Chest options for appearance, armor colors, layered armor, companion outfits, and gallery access. In Sunpetal Plains, use the first Velociprey and Velocidrome fights to learn Head-to-Head wins, Double Attacks, active skills, Stamina, transformations, and Synchro Rush. When you reach the lookout, switch to Tobi-Kadachi to climb walls and use the Farseer Spyglass to identify the forest route.

Chapter 3: Feral Monster

Ashen Pass introduces more serious exploration. Search for eggs, open treasure chests, and rescue Poogies as you move toward the monster egg objective. Paolumu is the first fight that asks you to target a part with intent; aim for the neck pouch and use Kinship pressure after mounting. The Feral Chatacabra fight then teaches the real rule for Feral Monsters: crystallized parts matter, but bad targeting can invite Backlash. Start with the head when the fight points you that way, then break the arms to remove the remaining dangerous parts.

Chapter 4: Gathering Storm

Before leaving through the southern gate, check the Smithy and learn how forging and upgrading connect to long-term power. Monster Dens also become a habit here. On the path to the Ancient Battlegrounds, activate any Catavan Stand you pass and consider easy one-star side quests if you need materials. Honed Glavenus begins with Speed attacks, so Technical counters are strong early. When a heated body part appears during enrage, read the part: a heated throat signals a Technical pattern, while a heated tail signals Power. Do not tunnel on damage if the heated state changes.

Chapter 5: The Princess of Vermeil

Speak with Rudy, visit the Melynx Emporium, then set up camp. Camps are not just rest points; they let you use facilities, speak with Rangers, and prepare for the next push. Feral Yian Kut-Ku normally leans Technical and shifts to Speed when enraged, with Ice and Thunder as useful answers. After the fight, Eleanor enters the route and the story starts teaching Invasive Monsters.

Chapter 6: Endangered Species

Your goal is to locate the Invasive Monster, force Invasive Yian Garuga to retreat, enter the Endangered Den, hatch the egg, and learn Habitat Restoration. This is a key systems chapter. Endangered monsters are not just optional flavor; they connect to monster collection, restoration progress, and achievement cleanup. When a monster retreats, follow up while the den is available instead of leaving it for much later.

Chapter 7: Amara’s Child

This short chapter is story-heavy and asks you to revisit past events with Simon before speaking with Rudy. Use the breathing room to check equipment, update your Monstie list, and clear any nearby side tasks from the first six chapters. The next stretch is more battle-focused.

Chapter 8: Tracks

Gaul and Murray point the Rangers toward Feral Monster tracks. The Fire and Ice Feral Velocidrome fight is a solo check, so focus one target down instead of splitting damage. Both begin with Speed and shift to Power when enraged, but their weaknesses differ: Water or Ice for the Fire version, Fire or Thunder for the Ice version. Feral Gypceros follows immediately with whatever health and status you carried out of the previous fight, so cure poison or darkness quickly and avoid entering the second fight half-prepared.

Chapter 9: Hostile Encounter

Fly to the Burning Watchtower and prepare for two Honed Glavenus. Because chapter 4 already taught the heated-part logic, the danger here is impatience. Keep your Technical answers ready for Speed turns, read the heated part during enrage, and heal before both enemies can chain pressure into the same weakened character.

Chapter 10: The Northern Meridian

At the Wyverian Gate, Magnamalo becomes the wall before leaving Azuria. It normally opens with Speed, shifts to Power in Hellfireblight mantle, and can move to Technical in a critical Hellfireblight state. Thunder and Water are useful weaknesses, and Tobi-Kadachi-style Thunder pressure is a strong fit if your team supports it. Once Magnamalo falls, the story moves beyond Azuria into the Cataracts arc.

Cataracts Walkthrough: Chapters 11-14

Chapter 11: Forbidden Ground

Canalta Timberland introduces a new campsite route and shows that Crystal Encroachment has spread beyond Azuria. Activate the Backwoods and Cataracts Catavan Stands as you pass them. Feral Somnacanth normally uses Technical attacks and shifts to Speed when enraged. Ice and Fire are useful weaknesses, and Gaul or Kora are good allies. Bring Sleep cures or be ready to lose planned turns when Sleep Powder Spray disrupts your team.

Chapter 12: Transgressors

Search for Sheparden with Corbin and PK, then handle Feral Great Izuchi. It opens with Speed and shifts to Power while enraged, with Thunder and Ice as strong options. Pack Call makes the fight messy because adds can steal turns and break your plan. Remove small threats when they interfere, but keep enough pressure on the main target that the fight does not reset into a long resource drain.

Chapter 13: Ward

Find Rudy, speak with Kol, search Blessing Hill for Canyne Eggs, force Invasive Arzuros to retreat, then deal with Feral Aknosom. Aknosom normally uses Technical attacks and shifts to Power when enraged. Thunder and Water help, but do not assume its element tells the whole story: it can still use Fire-based skills and later Ice-flavored pressure. Carry Zest Pills for Skillseal after Backlash. When Kol teaches Excursions, start using Training Talismans to grow environmental skills instead of leaving the feature untouched until cleanup.

Chapter 14: A Valuable Encounter

Dragonreach Mountains builds toward Yama Tsukami. The chapter is more about managing a large threat than solving a complicated route. Make sure your active party has upgraded gear, enough healing, and a Monstie lineup that covers your missing elements. If you have been skipping camps, meals, and Smithy upgrades, this is where that neglect starts to show.

When a boss summons adds or changes stance, stabilize first. A clean counter turn is worth more than a greedy damage turn.

Galyad Walkthrough: Chapters 15-21

Chapter 15: Rudy

Muddled Marsh separates the party and ends with Almudron. Almudron normally uses Power, shifts to Technical when enraged, and can become Speed-focused in its Mudbulb state. Fire and Ice are useful, and Rathalos or Aurora Somnacanth-style options fit the fight well. Break the Mudbulb when it appears; leaving it active lets the boss control the pace with mud-heavy skills.

Chapter 16: Crystallisis

Reach Tarkuan and fight Feral Ajarakan before sailing to Galyad. Ajarakan normally leans Technical and becomes Power-focused when overheated. Ice and Water are the cleanest answers. Its fire skills and Magma Counter punish autopilot turns, so slow down when it overheats and make sure your counter type, resistance, and healing are aligned.

Chapter 17: Ena

Enter Galyad, meet Ena, travel to the Ministry of Eggs, and speak with her again. This is a good time to spend a few minutes on egg management, because the game is increasingly interested in genes, restoration, and the relationship between story monsters and your long-term stable.

Chapters 18-20: Ten Years Ago, Transgression, and Atonement

Ride the Sandship to Death’s Maw and fight Feral Rakna-Kadaki. This monster normally uses Technical attacks and can shift to Speed when protected by its web mantle. Thunder is the key weakness, and the two Rachnoid adds can either be removed first or controlled with paralysis or darkness if your team can apply it. The following two chapters are more narrative-focused, returning to Galyad and Scriveners Lodge while explaining the transgression at the heart of the story.

Chapter 21: To the Sacrosanctum

Return to Death’s Maw and defeat Rey Dau. Rey Dau normally uses Speed and becomes Power-focused in Fulgurite Mantle. Ice is the main weakness. When the mantle appears, prioritize the wings and consider Darkness if your team can apply it, because Rey Dau’s thunder skills can snowball quickly. Once the sandstorm subsides, the path to the Sacrosanctum opens.

Sacrosanctum Walkthrough: Chapters 22-23

Chapter 22: The Sacrosanctum

The Glacial Caps and Old Capital route is a long boss chain, so treat the chapter as a real expedition. Feral Blangonga opens with Power and shifts to Speed, with Fire as the main answer. It can call Blango and command them, so remove the small monsters when they start stealing momentum. Avoid hitting its forelegs while it is enraged if that triggers Backlash in your current state.

Goss Harag follows with multiple enraged forms. It normally uses Power, shifts to Speed with Frost Blade, and shifts to Technical with Frost Knuckles. Fire is again useful. Read the weapon state before selecting counters. After that, Malzeno raises the pressure with Speed in normal state and Technical during activated Blood Rite. Dragon and Ice are useful weaknesses. Blood Rite cannot be treated like a simple item-curable ailment, so watch the HP swing and do not let Bloody Banquet undo your progress.

Chapter 23: Reunion

Arkveld normally uses Technical and shifts to Power when enraged, with Dragon as a weakness. The fight warns you that its power can grow as it absorbs attacks, so this is not a brute-force check. Use Power counters early, keep an eye on Blade Crawl-style area pressure, and do not waste Kinship into a bad state. After the fight, the story pushes toward Simon and the final Lazlion arc.

Lazlion Walkthrough: Chapters 24-30

Chapters 24-25: Homecoming and Talks of Peace

Return to Azuria Castle, speak with Rudy at the Base, then attend the peace talks at the Small Border Fort with Eleanor. These chapters are your chance to stabilize before the final run. Refresh meals, upgrade weapons and armor, check side stories, and decide whether you want to spend time on Monstie genetics before the Elder Dragon pressure ramps up.

Chapter 26: Father and Child

Go outside the Small Border Fort and stop Aenshin. This is the first late-game warning that chained story fights can punish a narrow team. Keep multiple elemental answers ready, avoid entering with one exhausted healer, and do not spend all resources in the first few turns if the fight is clearly building toward a scripted phase shift.

Chapter 27: Machinations

After the Rangers’ Base meeting, travel to the Sacrosanctum and explore Terra Nativitas. Bound Azure Rathalos normally uses Power, shifts to Speed when enraged, and becomes Technical while battle-bound. Dragon is a useful weakness. Increase fire resistance if you can, because its fiery skills can stack pressure fast. When it enters battle-bound behavior, re-check your attack type and do not continue playing as though it were still in a normal Rathalos rhythm.

Chapter 28: In Her Footsteps

Proceed deeper into Terra Nativitas and fight Bound Lunagaron. It normally uses Speed, shifts to Power when enraged, and becomes Technical while battle-bound. Fire is the key weakness. The fight is less forgiving if you guess counters, so watch for the state change and use healing before a battle-bound turn rather than after a heart is already gone.

Chapter 29: Echoes of Life

Go to the depths of Terra Nativitas, find Aenshin’s egg, and prepare for the second Aenshin encounter. Aenshin can inflict Petrification, which stops Stamina recovery and can cost a heart if repeated. Riding a Monstie can cure it, so keep mount timing in mind instead of spending every Kinship opportunity instantly. In normal state, Aenshin leans Technical, so Power counters are important. When enraged, it shifts toward Power and can buff itself before heavy crystallization attacks. Wait for exposed windows before going all in.

Chapter 30: Inherited Dream

Return to the Sacrosanctum and respect the no-return warning. If you want a cleaner postgame file, make a manual save, finish available side stories, check campsites and Catavan Stands, and stock healing before proceeding. The final Aenshin fight begins by asking you to break core parts, then destroy Blight Crystals summoned during Blight Crystallization. In the second phase, focus the True Core before the creature reaches its limit. The story ends after Aenshin is released from suffering and the remaining cutscenes conclude.

Before the final warning, clean up side stories and exploration goals you do not want to chase from memory later.

Aenshin Technical in the second encounter Power when enraged; final fight focuses on core parts Cure Petrification by riding, destroy Blight Crystals, then focus the True Core.

Dens, Eggs, and Habitat Restoration

Monster Dens start as a simple way to collect eggs, but they become one of the main completion systems. Regular dens can appear in different rarity tiers. Community testing references suggest that den rarity affects rare-gene odds more than the basic possible egg pool, so common dens are still worth checking when you are filling the Monsterpedia. Dens reset when areas reload; changing time is not a universal reset button.

Retreat dens are more targeted. If you force a monster to retreat, follow it because the resulting den is tied to that monster. Endangered Monster Dens appear after you repel the related Invasive Monster, and those dens connect directly to the conservation side of the game. For completion, keep a note of which invasive encounters you have already handled in Azuria, Canalta, Tarkuan, and Serathis so you do not confuse missing eggs with ordinary RNG.

Decorations and Skill Affinities

Weapon decorations are easy to misunderstand. The strongest community reference captured for this run says decorations come from upgrading weapons to level 3, and that unique decoration effects matter more than crafting every duplicate weapon. Because that Steam guide carried a removed/incompatible banner, treat its exact collection claims as a cleanup aid rather than an official checklist. The safe practical advice is still sound: do not sell off your long-term material planning for short-term upgrades, and keep a list of unique active and passive skills you have already unlocked.

Skill affinity abbreviations also matter once you start comparing similar decorations. For example, some suffixes raise skill power at a Stamina cost, some improve Wyvernfell pressure, some shift critical rate, and some reduce Stamina cost while lowering power. If two decorations look like duplicates, check the affinity behavior before discarding the worse-looking one. A lower-power version can still be better for a build that needs cheaper actions every turn.

Achievement and Cleanup Plan

The Steam achievements page lists 52 achievements. You will get several naturally through the story, but the rarest categories are not story completion. Plan cleanup in groups:

Cleanup Group What To Track Best Time
Story progression Major arc achievements such as Azuria memories, Sheparden, Galyad, Sacrosanctum, Calamity Cup, and Inherited Dream. Automatic through the main quest.
Companion side stories Eleanor, Ogden, Kora, Thea, Gaul, and the all-side-stories achievement. Whenever a new story chapter unlocks side stories, especially before chapter 30.
Exploration All campsites, lookout points, Catavan Stands, Poogies, foods, and Monsterpedia progress. Do a sweep before the final warning, then finish postgame gaps later.
Combat habits Head-to-Head wins, part breaks, Kinship Skills, Double Kinship Skills, Synchro Rushes, mounted melee wins, and max-damage setup. Throughout the campaign. Do not wait until postgame to start practicing these.
Monstie growth S-rank ecosystems, S-rank genes, dual-element monsters, five bingos, excursions, Rites of Channeling, and Awakening Gem. Start after Habitat Restoration and Excursions unlock, then refine near endgame.
Gear and decorations Max-level weapon, finest weapons and armor, all decorations, and related crafting recipes. Track from the Smithy unlock onward; finish when material access opens up.

Awakening Gem

Awakening Gem asks for two S-rank Environment Skills awakened at once. The clean route is to build a monster with the right S-rank environmental skills through Habitat Restoration, Excursions, and Rites of Channeling, then match the needed genes until both skills awaken. Because this depends on your monster box and gene access, do not lock yourself to a single early Monstie if you are planning full completion.

Barrel Felynes

The achievement page lists a Barrel Felyne rescue achievement, and the captured community guide suggests many players aim for 50. Barrel bombs, fixed-damage options, and Kora’s barrel bomb action are useful because Barrel Felynes can flee quickly and have awkward defenses. When you find a den event with fleeing Barrel Felynes, pause your normal egg routine and clear as many encounters as possible before they disappear.

Missable and Soft-Missable Checklist

  • Poogies: start rescuing them in the first region and keep a region-by-region note. Waiting until the end makes the sweep much more tedious.
  • Catavan Stands: activate every stand when you enter a new zone. They support travel and count toward exploration cleanup.
  • Lookout points: use the Farseer Spyglass and clear each region’s viewing points as you pass through.
  • Companion side stories: chapter 22 explicitly unlocks a new side-story set, and more are tied to story progress. Clear them before the finale if you want a tidy file.
  • Endangered dens: after an Invasive Monster retreats, handle the related den while you remember where it is.
  • Meals: the food achievement means you should try meals rather than using only the same favorite buff all game.
  • Decorations: track unique decoration effects from level 3 weapons so you do not waste materials on duplicate outcomes.
  • Pre-finale save: chapter 30 warns you before the final point of no return. Make a manual save there even if you plan to continue into postgame.

For 100% cleanup, the story is only the spine. The real checklist lives in exploration, Monsties, side stories, and gear.

What This Walkthrough Could and Could Not Verify

The main chapter order, arc names, many boss counters, official metadata, achievements count, and official screenshots were verified from readable sources. Game8 pages were blocked by an AWS WAF challenge, and every supplied Into Indie Games walkthrough URL returned an Imunify360 bot-protection access-denied response during capture, so this article does not rely on those pages for facts. The Steam Community guide pages were readable, but Steam showed removed/incompatible warning banners on them, so they are used only for cautious system cross-checking, not as official truth.
