Boxes: Lost Fragments Walkthrough: All Chapters, Notes, and Achievements

Official Boxes: Lost Fragments screenshot used as the walkthrough hero image

Boxes: Lost Fragments is a puzzle-box escape game about observation more than speed. Most soft locks that feel like bugs come from the same small habits: an inventory item was not unfolded, the back of a box was not inspected, a hidden switch was missed, or a visual clue was solved before the mechanism that reveals its real reference was opened.

This walkthrough is written for the full five-chapter route, from the tutorial mask to Aurora. It gives the order of rooms, the item chain for every puzzle box, the places where story notes and Steam achievements usually pop, and the cleanup checks that matter if you want the 12-achievement completion. For visual sliding, symbol, and jigsaw-style puzzles, I describe where the clue is found and what the finished state needs to accomplish, rather than pretending that every arrangement can be safely reduced to a line of text.

Spoiler warning: this guide names chapter goals, late-game items, the Aurora finale, achievement triggers, and story-note locations.

Every box hides at least one second layer. Rotate it, inspect inventory items, and check the underside before assuming a puzzle is finished.

Quick Route

Stage Main Object What Unlocks Next Cleanup Check
Tutorial Mask First chapter token Read story note 1 before leaving the glass-case room.
Chapter 1: Initium Bear Sigil, Ornate Hourglass, Owl Figure, Prism Token for Chapter 2 Four rooms, then use the fragments on the clock, owl wall, armor, and painting.
Chapter 2: Nexus Electric Key, Mechanical Sphere, Mechanical Console, Power Source Token for Chapter 3 Do the console, sphere, key-symbol, and power panels from left to right.
Chapter 3: Cognito Intricate Mechanism, Piano Keys, Film Reel, Remote Control Token for Chapter 4 Project the film before solving the final wall-symbol panel.
Chapter 4: Fractus Temple, train, desert, and dragon-box fragments Token for Chapter 5 The horse-board finale needs the model figure, bridge, tower, dragon clue, and door trace.
Chapter 5: Aurora Cryptex, Ancient Key, DNA Container, Power Source Ending Read story notes 9, 10, and 11 before waking Aurora.

Before You Start

  • Inspect inventory items from every side. Keys unfold, containers open, cylinders hide gears, mugs hide arrowheads, and mechanical parts become new tools after you rotate them.
  • Look for the clue before brute forcing symbols. Boxes often show a clue on the opposite face, under a movable panel, or after you press a button that appears unrelated.
  • Wrong moves are usually safe. The game has no timer or score penalty. A few ordered puzzles reset when you press the wrong switch, but they can be repeated immediately.
  • Use the hub after every set of four rooms. A chapter is not complete when you collect the fourth fragment. The mansion hub always has one more mechanism that converts those fragments into the next token.
  • For achievements, do the story path thoroughly. The Steam version lists 12 achievements. Most are tied to major chapter steps, but story notes and late final-chamber checks are easy to overlook if you skip optional inspection.

Tutorial Walkthrough

Open the small black box, take the folded key, and inspect it in your inventory. Flip it over and rotate the small latch until it becomes a usable mechanical key. Read the first story note inside the box before you move on.

Turn the glass case around. On the back is a small slider mechanism: rotate the ring so the two colored segments can move inward, then keep alternating ring rotation and segment movement until the two halves meet in the center. Insert the unfolded key in the revealed keyhole and turn it to claim the mask.

After the room opens, face the suit of armor area. The glowing device on the right contains the first token. Put that token into the central pedestal to open Chapter 1.

Chapter 1: Initium Walkthrough

Initium teaches the game’s language: a main puzzle box, a smaller companion object, hidden compartments on the back, and a fragment that returns you to the mansion hub. Treat every room as a chain. If a side is quiet, it is probably waiting for an item from another side of the same box.

Room Main Puzzle Box Important Chain Final Fragment
1 Mechanical box and compass map Key, mechanical disk, metal sphere, eye, circle door, statue locket, compass Bear Sigil
2 Clock box Wheel, handle, book handle, metal disk, clock face, scope clues Ornate Hourglass
3 Flower box and ladybug maze Ornate sphere, tool, petals, shield, ladybug path Owl Figure
4 Octopus chest and ship table Anchor, clam shell, pearl, slider lid, model ship, cannon, token trap board Prism

Room 1: Mechanical Disk, Eye, and Compass

Start with the larger box. Slide the hidden panel to find a key, then use it on the opposite padlock to get the mechanical disk. Inspect the disk before using it: the inner sections need to form the receiving shape that lets it sit correctly on the smaller box.

Put the disk on the smaller box, open it, and take the metal sphere. The sphere belongs on top of the larger box, where it becomes an eye. Rotate the eye until it looks into the box and reveals the glowing-circle puzzle. Use the side wheels to align the circle sections over the lit targets. When the inner door opens, turn the door around first. Its back gives the symbol positions for the small-door puzzle.

Open the statue locket to get the strange compass. Place it on the rotating map side of the box and turn the map until the compass lights guide you to the target. Take the Bear Sigil and leave the room.

Room 2: Clock and Scope Clues

The clock room is built around handles. Stop the rotating disk at the side to collect the mechanical wheel, use it on the small table box to get a handle, then search the clock top and the book stack for two small handles. The paired sliders on the side panel use those handles to expose the metal disk.

At the back, rotate the two circular plates until their gaps let the panel open. Insert the metal disk, pull the bar, and open the small table mechanism. A figure rises and gives you a small key. Use it on the clock face to start the hammer puzzle. Time the hammer so it fills every red square with a blue gem.

The hanging scope gives the final clock clue: one part is a time, and the other parts are symbols around the box. Set the clock face and symbol dials to match those observations, then take the Ornate Hourglass.

Room 3: Flower, Shield, and Ladybug

Open the large box’s rear sliding panels to get the key for the small box. The ornate sphere inside is itself a puzzle: slide each large green gem until it sits with its matching small fixed gem, then take the tool.

The tool goes into the flower slot on the main box. Before arranging the petals, open the side panel that reveals the petal clue. Use that clue to position the petals, collect the small shield, then put the shield on top of the box. The top puzzle asks you to rotate and combine three gem dials so all spaces are filled.

Place the mechanical ladybug on the revealed plate. The ladybug maze is less about speed than staging: rotate bridges, lower step columns only when the ladybug needs them, and use the final platform flip to guide it out. The reward is the Owl Figure.

Official Boxes Lost Fragments screenshot of a decorative puzzle box in the mansion
Many rooms hide the real clue on another face of the same object. If a puzzle asks for symbols, turn the box before solving it.

Room 4: Octopus Chest and Ship Table

Press the octopus eyes to get the metal figure and anchor. Use the anchor to open the front water compartment, then take the model ship. Open the back wing catches to find the clam shell; place it in front to get the pearl. The pearl opens the chest lid and starts the five-slider puzzle.

Inspect the model ship and extend its stand before placing it on the looping track. Use the track switch to guide the ship toward the left loop, then redirect it to the center. The large ship display opens next. Put the metal figure into the side panel, pull it to strike the flint, and fire the cannon.

Inside the ship is the small board game. Block the pink token before it reaches the rim. Once the board flips, take the ship helm, install it on the model ship, and turn it to split the ship open. Take the Prism.

Chapter 1 Hub: Use the Four Fragments

Back in the mansion, use the Ornate Hourglass in the clock and release the weight. The secret wall opens. Put the Owl Figure into the wall slot and use the blue-bar markings to set all four sliders. Pull the new switch to raise the small table in front of the armor.

On the armor shield, move the outer ring until the spokes open the center. Insert the Bear Sigil, open the armor chest doors, and engage the gear. The painting wall turns. Put the Prism into the light beam on the small table so the painting reveals the hidden necklace and Chapter 2 token.

Chapter 2: Nexus Walkthrough

Nexus leans into electricity, machines, and multi-stage mechanisms. If a box suddenly shows green lights, count them. They usually tell you how many sub-puzzles are still waiting.

Room Box Theme Main Puzzles Fragment
1 Optical hand machine Power panel, hexagon image, lens mechanism, hand switches Electric Key
2 Globe and chest Colored plugs, symbol mechanism, ring handle, matching symbols Mechanical Sphere
3 Steam train Pipe colors, pressure dials, moving floor gear grab Mechanical Console
4 Circuit bulbs Circuit rings, bulb wheel, symbol hexagon, fuse and plug sliders Power Source

Room 1: Power, Lens, and Hand

Open both glass side compartments first. One gives the screwdriver and glasses; the other is released from a rotating foot catch and hides a switch. Turn on the power puzzle, then move the red and blue objects until all four lights come on. Repeat for the second large green light, then pull the main switch.

Open the back, use the screwdriver on the mechanical hand, and take the broken mechanism. The front face opens after you rotate the semicircle and press the hidden button. Complete the seven-hexagon image puzzle to raise the optical device. Unscrew the lens from the glasses, put the broken mechanism under the device, install the lens, and zoom until the fuse puzzle appears.

Slide the fuses and wires so all four blue fuses plug into the sockets. Put the repaired mechanism back into the hand, connect the cable, then use the four finger switches until every finger is open. Take the Electric Key fragment.

Room 2: Battery, Plugs, and Sphere

Collect the battery from the base and insert it behind the front doors. Match the lower colored plugs to the top row; the back battery ring will activate. Press the rear power button and take the metal lever.

Open the crystal globe in your inventory to get the intricate mechanism. Use the metal lever on the chest top, slide it across, and install the mechanism in the round slot. Rotate it until its symbols match, then press the center button. The new hatches give a tool, then a key, then a mechanism part.

Install the mechanism part at the end socket. The final symbol puzzle asks you to bring the center symbols next to their matching symbols on the three outer circles. Solving it opens the top and gives the Mechanical Sphere.

Room 3: Train Box

Take the red valve wheel and ornament piece from the train ends. The ornament opens into a gear after you press its hidden green button. Put the gear on top, turn the handle, and set the three track dials so the red handle can slide down.

Use the wrench from the back to open the red cylinder. The pipe puzzle needs matching colored pipe halves connected to their colored destinations. After the boiler pressure rises, use the revealed dial diagrams on the three rear dials. Pull the switch to start the moving floor.

At the train front, open the catch and use the claw button whenever the hole passes over a gear. Grab all three gears to open the drawer and take the Mechanical Console.

Room 4: Circuits, Bulbs, and Plug

Start at the three-ring circuit puzzle. Only the top section carries outgoing circuit lines, so rotate the rings until all lines connect cleanly. That gives one green light. A small rear panel gives the second after you connect its clips.

Raise the top column, collect the bulb, install it in the rotating bulb wheel, and trigger the third green light. The symbol hexagon that follows has fixed inner symbols and movable outer symbols; slide the outer pieces in and out until each matches its inner partner.

Collect the fuse and electric plug from the opened ends. Add the missing fuse to the spinning bulb side. On the plug side, reveal the slider clue, set the four sliders, open the plug in your inventory, place it in the socket, and drag the hand across to connect it. Take the Power Source.

Chapter 2 Hub: Power the Mansion Machine

Use the Mechanical Sphere on the large wheel to reveal four screen symbols. Put the Mechanical Console into the left machine and arrange the moving lights to match the fixed lights around the edge. Insert the Electric Key into the panel beside the spinning gear and set its four dials to the screen symbols. Finally, place the Power Source in the last panel and pull the lever. Open the raised column to get the Chapter 3 token.

Chapter 3: Cognito Walkthrough

Cognito is the chapter most likely to waste time because several puzzles reset if you overshoot them. The safe-room handles and the shuriken-style ordered puzzles later in the game reward slow, deliberate clicks.

Room Theme Important Detail Result
1 Safe and toolbox Handle order: left 4 turns, right 3 turns, center 2 turns; key shape clue comes from the spinning side panel. Intricate Mechanism
2 Radio and music box Open the antenna and hidden clue panel before the tuning and slot-machine puzzles. Piano Keys
3 Letter tower and lamp Use the lamp to reveal markings; the combination lock is 4218 in the checked text walkthrough. Film Reel
4 Card and knight cube Cards, crown, heart, figure, knight board, and laser route all feed the remote. Remote Control

Room 1: Safe, Handles, and Piggy Bank

Take the gear from the small drawer and use it on the side toolbox after dropping its two switches twice. The toolbox gives the screwdriver. Use it on the side panel of the main safe, slide the screws along their tracks, open the gear door, and take the first small handle.

The mechanical container on the opposite side hides the second small handle. Add both handles to the back of the safe. Turn the left handle four times, the right handle three times, and the center handle two times. If you go too far, let the puzzle reset and repeat the order cleanly.

Use the side circle panel as the clue for the key shape. In inventory, rotate the intricate key pieces to match the keyhole; one verified route has the L-shaped piece to the right and the remaining pieces down. Open the safe, use the symbol lock, collect the piggy bank, then crush it in the vice. Take the Intricate Mechanism.

Room 2: Radio, Flower, and Musical Cylinder

Open the right-side top puzzle to reveal the antenna, then open the small left hatch to see the clue for the slot-machine face. Install the antenna and tune the radio so the center pointer and red numbers line up. The slot-machine grid changes rows and columns, so solve it by working one column at a time rather than chasing individual symbols.

The left and right circle puzzles both ask you to light all center paths, then connect the two path ends and press the green button. One side gives the Musical Cylinder, the other the Mechanical Flower.

Install the flower at the back and pull its petals in the required order: top, lower right, lower left, upper right, upper left, bottom. Open the Musical Cylinder in inventory by turning its hidden gear, place it between the mechanisms, and move the green notes into matching gold-note sections. Take the Piano Keys.

Room 3: Letters and Film

Use the lever at the lower side to turn the tower and reveal the first pair of small knobs. A switch opens the letter-circle area. This room is clue-heavy: move slowly, use the old key only after opening the correct panel chain, and turn the lamp on before trying to solve the markings on the board.

The checked text route places story note 6 near the combination lock and gives the lock code as 4218. After the drawers and letter mechanisms are solved, take the film piece or film reel. You will need it in the chapter hub, so do not leave the room thinking the visible puzzle boxes are all that matter.

Room 4: Cards, Knight Board, and Laser

Start with the card-suit sides. The small crown and ace card lead to the heart-shaped piece; the heart piece opens the center container and gives the small figure. From there the room becomes a sequence of board and laser logic. The knight-board step is a controlled movement puzzle, while the laser step is about routing the beam after the board mechanisms have exposed the correct parts.

When the dome replaces the figure with the final piece, take the Remote Control. This room is easy to under-inspect because the cube has several neat visual finales. Keep rotating until the game returns you to the hub.

Chapter 3 Hub: Piano, Projector, and Wall

Install the Piano Keys in the living-room piano. Press the keys until the numbered dials align across the center. Add the Film Reel to the projector. The projected clue is used on the wall panel: flip each square so the visible symbols and blanks match the projected pattern. The secret compartment gives the Chapter 4 token.

Official Boxes Lost Fragments screenshot showing a mechanical puzzle chamber
Chapter hubs are not menus. They are final puzzles that consume the fragments you earned in the four rooms.

Chapter 4: Fractus Walkthrough

Fractus shifts into myth, travel, and a large model-board finale. The safest rule is to keep every model piece until the hub asks for it. Horse, tower, dragon, bridge, and door clues all matter in the last sequence.

Room Box Theme Key Puzzles Watch For
1 Greek temple Columns, mural, square block, chariot Use the column clue before arranging the right-side columns.
2 Train display Metal disk, train front, train car The conductor hat hides the metal disk.
3 Sand table Symbols, ring, travelling puzzle Knife, oil lamp, candle, and ring all open later layers.
4 Dragon dome Number wheel, shield, dragon egg The rotating handle opens the central dome.

Room 1: Temple Box

Spin the three blue columns on the left side first; they reveal the symbol clue for the right-side column puzzle. On the right, turn the black column bases until the gold lines form the same symbols. Take the door handle, install it on top, and open the long lids.

The mural is a silhouette puzzle. Slide the background until it creates clear spaces for the figures, then move the figures into those spaces. At the back, take the lyre, find the hidden key in it, and open the circular center by aligning each ring horizontally. The key and mechanism part then open the blue center doors.

The square block puzzle wants the moving piece from left to right, but several path blocks only appear as you approach them. Move one step, let the board reveal itself, and avoid committing to a route until the hidden path is visible. Finish the chariot chain to clear the room.

Room 2: Train Box

Pick up the conductor hat and inspect it to get the metal disk. Use the disk puzzle and the corner switch chain to reveal the screwdriver and small badge. The train-front puzzle is another visual alignment check: finish the front before you try to solve the car movement.

The train-car puzzle moves all wheels together when space allows. Plan backward from the three green spaces on the right. Use walls and occupied slots to hold wheels while the others slide into position. Take the Model Figure when all three are parked correctly.

Room 3: Sand Table

Collect the oil lamp and knife. Open the knife in inventory, use the key it reveals on the locked lamp, and light the candle. The symbol and ring puzzles feed into the travelling puzzle: you are not just collecting trinkets, you are building the model route that will later matter in the hub.

When the route reaches the center and the figure changes, take the Model Tower. If the travelling puzzle seems impossible, recheck the lamp and ring layers. Missing one earlier object can make the board look like a dead end.

Room 4: Dome and Dragon

Open the rear sliding-button panel by rotating the lower wheel until the cut-outs line up with the button tracks. Take the wheel, install it in the front slot, and solve the number wheel. The rotating handle you receive opens the central dome and exposes the larger dragon-egg sequence.

Finish the shield and inner mechanisms, then keep the fragment for the hub. The later board finale is where Fractus really resolves.

Chapter 4 Hub: Horse Board and Door Trace

In the hub, use the gear wheel to connect the bridge with the round platform. Place the horse figure, slide it onto the bridge, move the bridge toward the gate, and push the horse through. After the pit section, use the Model Figure and Model Tower to raise the path.

Place the dragon figure on the small platform behind the horse and memorize the glowing shape it creates. Draw that same shape on the round door puzzle by lighting and connecting the correct buttons. Slide the horse into the building, open the top, and take the Chapter 5 token.

Chapter 5: Aurora Walkthrough

Aurora is the finale, but it is also the most generous chapter structurally: four doors, four major objects, then one final machine. The hard parts are visual timing and ordered-button puzzles, not finding the route.

Room Theme Important Steps Final Object
1 Wolf and rune box Horn handle, block slide, Celtic knot, short sword, ring puzzles, four rune stones Cryptex
2 Aztec chest Mug arrowhead, mosaic, blue gems, skull, face, snake body Ancient Key
3 Pyramid Medallion, scroll, hammer, scarab, symbol hexagons, timing symbols DNA Container
4 Japanese gate Dice clue, segment puzzle, shuriken order, portal, bird figure, maze Power Source

Room 1: Wolf Box and Cryptex

Inspect the horn, rotate its center dial until the small switch can slide, then return the center seam to vertical so the horn opens and gives the handle. Use the handle on the back of the box and solve the block-slide path from the left to the upper right.

Open the small puzzle box from underneath to get the Celtic knot. Insert it into the sword hilt, release the clasps, and take the short sword. Putting the sword on top opens the ring puzzles under the wolf heads. Move the handle upward one ring at a time, rotating each ring so its gap lines up before you pass through.

Each wolf head gives two rune stones. Match the four runes to the four chained corner figures. After they move out, take the dragon token from the exposed corner, place it on the round container, and rotate the container upward. Line up the three rune-stone parts so the symbol is visible. The dragon spirit breaks the top and gives the Cryptex.

Room 2: Aztec Chest and Ancient Key

Take the Aztec mug and inspect its underside for the old arrowhead. At the back, rotate the circular lock vertical, open the wall, and use the three tumblers so each gap faces forward before sliding the switch right. Take the small figure.

One side holds the blue-gems puzzle: move all five gems into the central gold circle. The opposite side uses the small figure to open the mosaic. Slide its circular pieces until the image is complete, then take the Aztec Artifact. On the front face, rotate the top ring until the artifact symbol is centered, place the artifact, and turn the eye dials so the red markings line up.

Put the Crystal Skull inside. The chest becomes a totem. On the snake panel, flip the nine squares until the body connects continuously from head to tail. Install the old arrowhead as the handle, slide it to the top, and take the Ancient Key.

Room 3: Pyramid and DNA Container

Take the medallion from the cat, slide the base stone to get the scroll, and break the jars with the hammer to get the puzzle piece. Use the peephole inside the pyramid: pan until the floating eye overlays the matching wall symbol with the correct orientation.

The scroll is the clue for the 10-symbol hexagon puzzle. Move one tile at a time with the center dial, insert it between the right neighbors, and rebuild the sequence from the scroll. Take the Strange Pyramid. The rear block puzzle then gives the Beetle Cocoon; open it to get the scarab.

Put the medallion on the front circle, mount the scarab, and slide it upward. Place the Strange Pyramid on top, slide the scarab again, then use the yellow timing button to stop the pointer on the three required symbols. Take the Small Crystal, place it in the holder, and collect the DNA Container from the Sphinx.

Room 4: Dice, Shuriken, Portal, and Power Source

Find the hidden slider on the front-left roof decoration to reveal the picture clue with four dice numbers. On the opposite side, turn the upper cylinder to expose the switch and open the dice panel. Use the plus and minus buttons to adjust row, column, and diagonal pairs until the four dice match the clue.

Install the Brass Handle at the back. The six-segment puzzle flips segments after left and right button turns; work patiently until the full pattern shows. Take the Mechanical Part and tighten it in inventory until it becomes a Shuriken.

At the front, turn both flower handles, slide the green cover away, and insert the Shuriken. Extend the blades in this checked order: lower left, lower right, top right, right, left, top left. Rotate the completed shuriken to reveal the Torii gate and portal.

Inside the portal area, open the right lantern and take the Bird Figure. Screw it into the cage to reveal the maze. This maze has no normal exit; move the maze itself until its paths fill the castle-shaped cutout at the top. Open the six-sided box, take the key, return through the portal, unlock the small box behind the original gate, and take the Power Source.

Official Boxes Lost Fragments screenshot showing a puzzle box with mechanical parts and lights
Late-game puzzles often ask for an order. If the device resets, write down the successful steps instead of trying to improvise faster.

Final Chamber: Wake Aurora

Turn to the spinning cylinder in the chamber. Insert the Cryptex into the base socket, slide the front panel left, then slide the blue button right. Use the Ancient Key in the new keyhole and rotate the outer dial until it lines up with the blue arrow.

The circle puzzle above uses arrow buttons to rotate the outer ring. When the arrow points at a small circle, that circle turns. Rotate the small circles until they form one continuous circular line, with the colored sections on the outside. After the case opens, slide the octagonal switch left and press the green button, then slide it right and press the red button.

Read the final story note before finishing if you are collecting notes. Put the DNA Container into Aurora’s back, then place the Power Source in the chest cavity. The ending cutscene plays and the game is complete.

Official Boxes Lost Fragments screenshot showing a late-game mechanical puzzle box
The finale uses everything the game has been teaching: transformed inventory items, hidden buttons, ordered mechanisms, and a last pass around the machine before the ending.

Aurora Final chamber Complete the circle-line puzzle and press both green/red buttons.
Game complete Ending Install the DNA Container and Power Source after reading the final note.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to solve visual puzzles before finding their clue. If symbols, dice, petals, or tiles feel arbitrary, leave the panel and inspect the rest of the box.
  • Forgetting inventory transformations. The folded key, glasses, crystal globe, mechanical cylinder, Aztec mug, beetle cocoon, and mechanical part all change when examined.
  • Leaving after collecting a fourth room fragment. Each chapter still needs a hub conversion puzzle to create the next token.
  • Missing story notes in transition moments. Notes often sit beside the object you are about to use, not inside the most dramatic puzzle panel.
  • Over-clicking ordered puzzles. Handle, flower, shuriken, and timing puzzles are easier if you pause after each successful response and let the animation finish.
