Subnautica 2 Guide: Story Progression, Base Building, and the Early Access Ending

Official Subnautica 2 screenshot of a large underwater base surrounded by alien coral

This guide covers the playable Subnautica 2 story through the current Early Access endpoint, with route advice updated for Early Access 1.1, Adaptive Measures. It contains location and story spoilers. The game is still changing, so use NoA signals, live blueprint requirements, and the PDA as the final authority when a future patch moves a fragment or changes a recipe.

A useful route is not just a line between story markers. Each new region should leave you with a safer base, better oxygen, and the tool needed for the next obstruction.

Subnautica 2 is deliberately open. You can wander far beyond the next objective, but story progress is still gated by a compact chain: investigate Blackboxes, scan the tools found around abandoned habitats, clear infected Angel Combs, build the Tadpole, reach the Alien Ruins, and restore the power plant. The route below keeps those dependencies in order without turning exploration into a rigid coordinate chase.

Progression Route At A Glance

Stage Main job Do not leave without
Prologue and shallows Launch the Lifepod, establish food and water, power the Welcome Center Survival Multitool, Scanner, basic oxygen equipment, first Biomod access
Coral Gardens and plateau Follow Anita, Chap, Quaker, Wu, and related NoA leads; search Camp One and Old Habitat Habitat Builder, Processor progress, Wakemaker, Scanner Station progress, Biobed upgrades
Blighted region Build the Sonic Resonator and remove Bloom Cankers Heat Tolerance Adaptation, Rebreather progress, Repair Tool progress
Tadpole Pens Build a Moonpool setup, fabricate the Tadpole, recover Zip’s Blackbox, open the Pens Scout Ray Chassis scan, access to the next NoA lead, spare repair and power supplies
Alien Ruins Cross the dangerous open water, establish a forward base, follow the second Blackbox chain Tadpole Depth Module Mk 1, Bioscanner, Modification Station, Rosetta Stone scan
Late-game region Find both Feedback Resonator fragments, gather turbine materials, cure the Axum Angel Comb Feedback Resonator, Axum Vision, repaired turbine
Current story endpoint Restart the power plant, enter the Observatory, scan the Orrery, report to NoA A manual save before the final sequence and a cleanup list for continued exploration

The depth bands are guidance, not locks. A signal may appear before you are equipped to reach it safely. When that happens, the answer is usually a missing scan, Adaptation, vehicle module, or base facility rather than a hidden dialogue choice.

Survival Rules Before The First Long Dive

Separate exploration trips from material runs

On an exploration trip, carry food, water, a healing item, a charged Scanner, and enough free inventory space to bring home new technology. Scan first and gather only the material you need immediately. Once you understand a region, return with emptier pockets for a dedicated resource run. Mixing both jobs is how players end up deep in a wreck with no room for a data item and no oxygen margin.

Use signals as a player-made map

Subnautica 2 does not give you a conventional full-screen world map. Signals are therefore more than quest markers. Toggle old Blackbox signals back on when they mark useful caves, quartz fields, wrecks, or safe routes. If two locations overlap visually, rename or color the signals so you can identify the correct depth before committing to a dive.

Save around risk, not on a timer

The official Steam feature list includes save-anytime support. Keep a manual checkpoint before a new wreck, a long Leviathan crossing, an expensive vehicle build, or any late-game use of scarce material. Death normally leaves your carried inventory in a marked cache that can be recovered, but reloading a clean save may be faster when a vehicle is destroyed or a required resource falls through the world. Do not overwrite your only good save while trapped, starving, or below a vehicle’s crush limit.

Treat oxygen as a route budget

Plan every deep section as an out-and-back route. Note the nearest surface, powered room, Oxygen Tunic, leaking tank, or other refill point before pushing deeper. Face the direction you are swimming; a panicked diagonal ascent wastes time. Upgrade the air tank early, then add the Rebreather before the story routinely sends you below the comfortable range of the starting equipment.

Menus are not a reliable emergency shelter. If you need the game fully paused in single-player, use the system pause screen and confirm that the world has stopped before walking away.

Prologue, Lifepod, And Welcome Center

Escape the opening area

  1. Boot NoA and follow the Adaptation Chamber prompts.
  2. When the Biolock rejects you, visit the Sampling Pavilion and interact with the Angel Comb, then repeat the scan.
  3. Enter the Lifepod sequence, activate its systems, and swim through the damaged section to the next chamber.
  4. If the Lifepod cannot launch, swim around its exterior and release both corroded locks before returning to NoA.
  5. After landing on Proteus, take the medkit and nutrition supplies from Lifepod storage and make a manual save.

The opening teaches an important rule: an apparently sealed route often has an external switch, removable salvage, broken door, or alternate underwater entrance. Check the structure from every side before assuming you need a later tool.

Build the minimum useful kit

Do not spend the first hour filling the Lifepod with random ore. The early objective is a tool chain. Gather loose Titanium, then use the Survival Multitool to harvest plant materials that cannot be collected by hand. Search the shallow caves for Copper, Quartz, and Silver while using oxygen-producing flora and ceiling air pockets as refill stations.

Priority Item Captured recipe Why it matters
1 Survival Multitool 3 Titanium Harvests key biological materials and clears some obstructions
2 Scanner 2 Titanium, 2 Quartz, 1 Basic Battery Unlocks fragmented blueprints and records world data
3 Basic Fins and air equipment Check the live Fabricator Expands the safe radius around the Lifepod
4 Habitat Builder 2 Titanium, 1 Glass, 1 Basic Battery, 1 Copper Wire Turns exploration into permanent powered infrastructure

Recipes are included as a shopping aid, not a substitute for the current Fabricator. Early Access patches can rebalance them.

Power the Welcome Center

  1. Follow the nearby signal or travel southeast from the Lifepod to the Welcome Center.
  2. Scan the damaged Habitat Builder in the cargo box outside.
  3. Install a Basic Battery in the interior power outlet to activate NoA and the Biolab.
  4. Use the Biolab to inspect and equip the Biomods currently available to your character.
  5. Remove the Metal Salvage that covers the opening below the structure. Search the cave and scan the second Habitat Builder fragment there. Other fragments exist, so continue scanning at Camp One if your blueprint is still incomplete.

Early Access 1.1 smoothed out early Biomod progression, added Biolabs in Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins, and raised the total unlockable Biomods from four to six. A guide written for the launch build may therefore undercount them. The Bioscanner later unlocks additional passive slots by scanning creatures.

The full route works solo or in co-op with up to three friends. In multiplayer, make sure each player has the Adaptation needed for the next region before the group moves on.

Blackboxes, Old Habitat, And The First Base

NoA reveals the missing colonists in waves. A useful early order is Anita, Chap, Camp One, and Old Habitat, with Wander held until the Sonic Resonator can clear the infected route. The exact notification order can vary with exploration, so return to a NoA terminal whenever progress goes quiet.

Anita and the first food Adaptation

Anita’s signal is close to an Angel Comb in the opening region. Interact with the healthy organism to obtain the early digestion-related Adaptation before relying on alien food. Collect the Blackbox, scan nearby technology, and mark any resource cave worth revisiting.

Chap’s Blackbox and the Colonist Bunker

Follow Chap’s signal into the rocky-pillar cave system. The bunker contains a Biobed. Activate it: colonist-modified Biobeds add permanent inventory or quickslot capacity, making them some of the highest-value optional discoveries in the game. Search the entire room before leaving; technology scans are easier to miss than the bright story object.

Camp One

Camp One is a collapsed network of rooms patrolled by a Marrowbreach. Use the wreck itself as cover. Flood the stubborn compartment from its control, then approach through the lower collapsed corridors rather than forcing the jammed upper door. Tuba’s Blackbox and several practical scans are inside, including progress toward the Wakemaker, Scanner Station, and power systems.

Old Habitat

Old Habitat is the point where the run stops feeling temporary. Enter from below, restore or use its available systems, collect Quaker and Wu-related records, and scan every production device. In particular, look for the Processor, Battery Terminal, Scanner Station, and Sonic Resonator technology.

Sources captured different Processor fragment counts, probably because of build or route differences. Do not stop after one scan because an older guide says one is enough. Scan each intact or broken Processor you find until the PDA confirms the blueprint.

Build a functional base, not a showroom

Place the first base in shallow water within a short trip of Titanium, Copper, Silver, and a natural current. Building directly beside the Lifepod is convenient for ten minutes but wastes travel later. A slightly more central site between the early wrecks and the northern plateau is usually better.

Official Subnautica 2 screenshot of a Tadpole submersible docked inside a base
Reserve a clear room for the Moonpool, Tadpole Dock, and Vehicle Fabricator. Early Access 1.1 reduced their placement footprint, but surrounding furniture can still block construction.

A lean first-base checklist:

  • One expandable Room and a Hatch
  • Enough Solar Panels to cover daytime use, plus storage for the night
  • Fabricator and ordinary storage near the entrance
  • NoA Terminal so story updates do not require a Lifepod commute
  • Processor for ingots and advanced materials
  • Scanner Station for targeted material searches
  • Battery and Power Cell Terminals as their scans complete
  • Hydroelectric Turbine and Power Transmitters if a strong current is nearby

The Processor recipe captured for the launch route was 2 Titanium, 1 Mild Acid, and 1 Copper Wire. It must be placed in a powered base. The Scanner Station can locate selected raw materials within its local radius and turn a resource result into a signal, which is far more efficient than circling a biome hoping to spot one piece of Silver.

Early Access 1.1 added a storage buildable whose contents are deliberately excluded from nearby recipe completion. Use that special storage for materials you do not want auto-counted, such as a late-game reserve. Use normal storage for the common crafting pool.

Bloom Cankers And Heat Tolerance

Wander’s Blackbox and the next major region are blocked by Bloom growth. This is the first hard tool gate.

  1. Finish the necessary Sonic Resonator scans around Coral Gardens, Camp One, Old Habitat, and nearby debris.
  2. Use the Processor and Fabricator to prepare the resonator’s components. A captured recipe is 1 Basic Battery, 2 Titanium Ingots, 2 Lead, and 1 Wiring Kit.
  3. Follow the infected structure toward Wander’s signal and destroy the exposed Bloom Cankers. Avoid the large hostile claw or parasite rather than treating it as the puzzle target.
  4. Trace the organic branches away from the main Angel Comb. Clear every connected infection node before returning to the central organism.
  5. Interact with the cured Angel Comb to receive Heat Tolerance.

If the Angel Comb remains closed, one Canker is still active. Look along every branch and below overhangs; repeatedly firing at the central organism will not complete the event.

Adaptive Measures changed Bloom encounters and added traversal and oxygen work to several wrecks. That makes a current PDA marker more trustworthy than an old screenshot of a doorway. The update also makes most creatures flee temporarily after a Survival Multitool hit and briefly dizzy after a Sonic Resonator hit, but the wording is most creatures. Do not assume a Leviathan is safely stunned.

The Sonic and Feedback Resonators are progression tools first. Their defensive effect creates an escape window; it is not a promise that every predator can be fought.

Tadpole Pens And The First Vehicle

Build the Moonpool chain

After obtaining Heat Tolerance, expand the base before committing to the hot region. You need a configurable Moonpool, Tadpole Dock, and Vehicle Fabricator. Keep the room clear until both machines place correctly and confirm that generation exceeds their power draw.

The captured Tadpole recipe is 2 Titanium Ingots, 1 Glass, 1 System Chip, and 1 Power Cell. If the Vehicle Fabricator refuses to build, check power, enlarge the Moonpool, remove obstructing furniture, and read the placement message added or clarified in Early Access 1.1.

Open Tadpole Pens

  1. Drive to Tadpole Pens and scan the Scout Ray Chassis technology near the docks.
  2. Try the locked door so NoA can identify the missing clearance.
  3. Use a nearby NoA Terminal or return to base, then wait for Zip’s Blackbox signal.
  4. Enter the hot zone with Heat Tolerance, collect Zip’s Blackbox, and gather useful Gold, Sulfur, and Lithium while you are there.
  5. Return to Tadpole Pens. The recovered record supplies the clearance needed for the interior.
  6. Search the unlocked rooms, activate the NoA sequence, and take every chassis, power, and base scan before leaving.

A tiny powered outpost with a Room, Hatch, Solar Panels, and NoA Terminal near the Pens can remove a long return trip. Deconstruct it later for the materials if it no longer serves as a useful signal or safe air pocket.

Prepare for the open-water crossing

Build the Scout Ray Chassis for speed and maneuverability. Carry a Repair Tool, spare charged power, food, water, and a compact set of base materials. The Collector Leviathan patrols the approach to the Alien Ruins. This is an avoidance problem, not a boss encounter: remain in the Tadpole, keep a direct escape line, use terrain to break contact, and repair only after you have created distance. Community guides disagree on exact detection range and damage, so do not use a precise number as a safety guarantee.

Alien Ruins And The 450-Meter Transition

Establish a forward operating base

The Alien Ruins are far enough from the opening zone that a second base is worth the cost. The local structure provides shelter and useful equipment, and the surrounding region has abundant building material plus a current suitable for Hydroelectric Turbines. Build only what supports the remaining story:

  • Powered rooms, Hatch, storage, Fabricator, Biobed, and NoA Terminal
  • Processor and Scanner Station
  • Moonpool, Tadpole Dock, and Vehicle Fabricator
  • Modification Station
  • Battery or Power Cell support appropriate to your loadout

You can ferry selected machines from the first base, but do not dismantle the old shelter until the new one has power, oxygen, storage, and a respawn point. A failed move is more expensive than two modest bases.

Ruby’s second Blackbox and the Depth Module

Follow NoA toward Ruby’s second signal in the Needler Nest. Park the Tadpole above its current crush depth and finish the last section by swimming. Scan the Improved Fins and Tadpole cargo-related technology around the wreck, then use the Sonic Resonator to collect Celestine and Creature Enamel.

Return to the Modification Station and make the Tadpole Depth Module Mk 1 as soon as its recipe is complete. The launch-version route raised the Tadpole limit from 250 meters to 450 meters. Do not test the limit with valuable cargo; install the module and verify the displayed depth rating before descending.

Iso’s Blackbox and the Bioscanner

Iso’s signal leads to the Cicada EVA Prep wreck. Bring the Repair Tool. Open the damaged route, collect the Blackbox and Photovoltaic Charger data, and descend through the interior while using the available oxygen source. Scan the Bioscanner at the bottom and complete the Modification Station scan if it is still missing.

The Bioscanner is essential for the late story and for character growth. In 1.1, creature scans can unlock additional passive Biomod slots, and the interface shows both the required and completed Bioscans. This makes scanning fauna a progression system, not merely a databank hobby.

Read the ruins

Scan the Rosetta Stone near the Alien Ruins to understand the alien language. Visit the Observatory entrance and inspect its inactive control. This establishes the real late-game objective: restore the alien power plant before the Observatory can be used.

Feedback Resonator, Power Plant, And Observatory

Follow the second Blackbox chain

NoA’s late signals lead through Anita’s second Blackbox, Singh’s area, and Zip’s second Blackbox at the Metal Farms. Search each wreck completely rather than grabbing the story item and leaving. The first Feedback Resonator fragment is associated with the Therapy Room wreck near Singh’s signal. The second is at the Metal Farms near Zip’s later signal.

At the Metal Farms, scan the alien production structure and collect Axum Bacterial Cultures and Troilite-bearing material. Older community warnings describe runs that exhausted Troilite before the repair. Those warnings also predate later resource changes, but the safe practice costs nothing: preserve enough Troilite for the turbine and keep at least one seed resource available until your own Metal Farm is functioning. Make a manual save before spending the last unit of any late-game mineral.

Craft the Feedback Resonator at the Modification Station. A captured recipe uses 2 Enameled Glass, 2 Conduit Crystal, and 2 Strontium. Confirm the current recipe in your build.

Cure the late Angel Comb

The late Bloom Nodes use armored Cankers that protect themselves at close range. The Feedback Resonator fires at distance and is the intended answer. Clear the three surrounding infected nodes, then remove the two armored Cankers on the main Angel Comb. Interact with the cured organism to receive Axum Vision, which makes the alien power controls readable.

Official Subnautica 2 screenshot of a Tadpole submersible crossing a glowing orange hot biome
Late expeditions combine heat, depth, long travel, and scarce materials. Return with a full cargo plan instead of making repeated improvisational crossings.

Repair the turbine

Scan the damaged turbine with the Bioscanner, then use the Habitat Builder to repair it. The repair consumes processed parts rather than loose ore.

Repair component Quantity Total raw-material implication
Titanium Ingot 10 30 Titanium at 3 Titanium per ingot
Strontium 10 20 Celestine at 2 Celestine per Strontium
Mangalloy Ingot 10 10 more Titanium Ingots, 10 Atacamite, and 10 Troilite

That works out to 60 Titanium, 20 Celestine, 10 Atacamite, and 10 Troilite for the complete turbine repair in the captured route. Process the materials in batches and store the finished repair set separately so base expansion does not consume it.

Solve the power controls

  1. From the cured Angel Comb, enter the lower control room embedded in the cliff.
  2. Use the lower console to deploy the external probe.
  3. Repair the turbine if it is not already complete.
  4. Enter the upper control room opposite the repaired machinery.
  5. At the two lower panels, move the knobs and levers until their indicators match and turn green, then press the central confirmation control on each panel.
  6. Use the upper or central master console to bring the plant online.

If the master control does nothing, one of three prerequisites is missing: the probe is not deployed, the turbine repair is incomplete, or one lower panel has not been confirmed after its indicators turned green.

Reach the current ending

Return to the Observatory, enter through the now-powered door, and scan the Orrery with the Bioscanner. The interior water is oxygenated, so take time to check the structure. After the dialogue, return to a NoA Terminal for the final conversation in the current Early Access story.

This is not the full ending of Subnautica 2. The official store states that Early Access will add biomes, creatures, craftables, features, and narrative over time. You can continue exploring and building after the Observatory sequence.

Completion And Cleanup Checklist

As of July 14, 2026, the official Steam appdetails response for AppID 1962700 did not list Steam Achievements. Steam Community guide categories are not an achievement list. Until the developer exposes achievements, use an in-game cleanup checklist rather than promising a nonexistent 100% trophy route.

Category Cleanup target Best tracking method
Story Resolve every NoA signal and Blackbox lead available in the current build Signals menu and NoA dialogue
Permanent capacity Activate every discovered colonist Biobed Region-by-region wreck sweep
Biomods Unlock all six Biolab Biomods available in 1.1 and the passive slots available from Bioscans Biolab and Bioscanner progress displays
Tools Complete Scanner, Habitat Builder, Wakemaker, Repair Tool, Sonic Resonator, Feedback Resonator, and Bioscanner technology Blueprint menu
Vehicle Build the Tadpole, depth module, and whichever Scout Ray or cargo chassis suits your remaining trips Vehicle Fabricator and Modification Station
Base systems Complete power, storage, production, scanning, docking, and charging blueprints Habitat Builder categories
Databank Rescan wreck rooms and fauna missed during oxygen-limited visits PDA incomplete entries and Bioscanner counters

No verified source identified a permanent one-way cutoff before or immediately after the Observatory. The larger risks are practical: spending late materials too early, losing a vehicle in deep water, overlooking a fragment in a revised wreck, or moving a base before the replacement is operational.

Common Progression Problems

NoA has stopped giving objectives

  • Return to a powered NoA Terminal and exhaust the available conversation.
  • Revisit the last signal and search the whole structure, including lower entrances and repaired doors.
  • Check that the Blackbox was actually collected, not merely approached.
  • Scan major equipment in the area; the next route may depend on a tool rather than another Blackbox.
  • Review the PDA for a notification that did not auto-play. In 1.1, audiologs no longer play automatically; they are added to the PDA for individual playback.

A blueprint will not complete

Most advanced items need multiple fragments. Search the same class of wreck in the next region and scan duplicate-looking equipment. Do not trust a fixed fragment count from a launch-week guide when the PDA still shows incomplete progress.

The base has no oxygen or machines do not run

Confirm that the Room is connected, a Hatch is installed, and generation exceeds the active draw. Solar power is safest in shallow water; Hydroelectric Turbines need a genuine current and may need Power Transmitters. Disable or deconstruct a high-draw machine temporarily if the base only fails at night.

The Tadpole Dock or Vehicle Fabricator will not place

Expand the Moonpool, clear nearby furniture and exterior obstructions, and rotate the ghost until it aligns with the room. Adaptive Measures made both pieces smaller and improved error messages, so update the game before following older placement workarounds.

A Blackbox signal remains after collection

Early Access 1.1 fixed several signal bugs, including one involving Wu’s Blackbox and another that deleted collected signals. Update first, save in a safe location, reload, and check the Signals menu. If the story already advanced, treat the leftover icon as a UI issue rather than restarting the run.

You cannot finish the Angel Comb event

Trace every branch from the central organism to its remote nodes. Early Cankers use the Sonic Resonator; late armored Cankers need the Feedback Resonator at range. The central interaction only unlocks when every required node in that event is clear.

You are short on Troilite for the turbine

Search the Metal Farms region thoroughly with the Scanner Station before assuming the run is blocked. Scan the farm technology, preserve the seed material, and use a powered player-built farm if available. Because Early Access resource placement has already changed, avoid cheat or restart advice written for the launch build until the current region has been rescanned.
