Dying Light: The Beast is easiest to finish when you stop treating every map icon as an immediate obligation. The campaign repeatedly sends Kyle through night routes, Dark Zones, Chimera arenas, power systems, and human strongholds. A clean run opens safe ground first, finishes nearby side quests while their travel routes overlap, and enters each story set piece with repaired weapons, ranged ammunition, and at least one separate save.
This walkthrough follows all 18 story missions, counting Rise and Shine as the introduction, then builds a practical route through the 20 side-quest completions, safe zones, transformer stations, collectibles, safe codes, New Game+, Nightmare, and the current 42-achievement list. It is written for the standard campaign first. A separate section explains what changes when you choose Restored Land or One Life.

Before starting: settings, saves, and route discipline
Story difficulty is reasonable if you mainly want the route and narrative. Survival is the useful baseline for a first systems-focused run. Higher settings make stamina, durability, death penalties, enemy damage, and the supply economy more demanding. Difficulty can be adjusted during the standard story, so there is no prize for staying stuck in an early Chimera fight. Nightmare and Restored Land deserve dedicated runs because their achievement conditions and economies change how you play.
The campaign autosaves, but do not rely on one rolling checkpoint. Story missions such as The Beast Within, Cries Trapped in the Walls, and The Last Supper contain long commitments. Co-op can also move quest state in ways the guest did not expect. Keep a small set of manual backups outside the game whenever your platform allows it.
| Checkpoint | When to make it | What it protects |
|---|---|---|
| Open-world cleanup | Before accepting a long story mission | Side quests, safe zones, equipment changes, and collectible sweeps |
| Mission entrance | Before the church, school, Volatile nest, asylum, and castle | Long stealth routes and possible checkpoint bugs |
| Pre-boss | Before every Chimera arena | Healing, ammunition, weapon repairs, and a clean retry |
| Clear data | Immediately after the credits | New Game+ progression and the Second Ascent run |
| Mode archive | Before starting Nightmare, Restored Land, or One Life | Your completed standard world and post-story cleanup |
A dependable preparation loop
- Activate the closest safe point first. A nearby UV refuge shortens every night failure and gives you a place to sleep, craft, and reset.
- Repair only weapons worth carrying. Low-rarity tools are often better dismantled. Save repair materials for a strong melee weapon and keep a second weapon for durability emergencies.
- Separate human and infected loadouts. Quiet takedowns, a bow, and accurate firearms solve soldiers; crowd tools, UV, explosives, and durable melee weapons solve infected.
- Enter bosses with free inventory space. You need room for rewards and do not want to sort gear while a story transition is waiting.
- Use Survivor Sense before leaving an interior. Several collectible sets live inside mission locations, especially the school, factory, asylum, and late laboratories.
Beast Mode is a tactical resource, not a panic button. Build the meter on ordinary enemies, then spend it when a boss enters a dangerous second phase or when two major threats overlap. It does not make Kyle completely immune. Continue dodging grabs, shockwaves, and attacks that land outside your swing rhythm.
All 18 story missions in order
Some lists call the game a 17-mission campaign because they exclude the playable introduction. The complete route contains 18 named missions when Rise and Shine is counted.
| # | Mission | Main job | Preparation checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rise and Shine | Escape the laboratory and learn melee, stealth, UV, and parkour | Use stealth in the operating room; save Beast strength for the forced crowd |
| 2 | Safe Haven | Reach the monastery, restore its UV defenses, defeat the Reaper | Loot decoys and close doors before powering the site |
| 3 | Life After Life | Open Town Hall, defeat the Defect, find the sheriff, restore power | Do not spend the courtyard explosives before the Chimera arrives |
| 4 | The Beast Within | Track the Beast at night, climb the church, search the rail tunnel | Activate nearby UV refuges and travel light |
| 5 | First Blood | Track and kill the Mist in the swamps | Bring crowd control for its summoned infected |
| 6 | Power Gambit | Drain and restart the hydroelectric station | Carry ranged options for bloaters and soldiers |
| 7 | A New Strain | Infiltrate the E&F plant and defeat the Leviathan | Craft explosives before activating the bait gas |
| 8 | Vengeance Is Mine | Infiltrate the mine, confront the Baron, escape a Volatile lair | Favor stealth; the cave exit is a run, not a fight |
| 9 | Some Like It Dark | Find and rescue the mountain-community prisoners | Have a vehicle ready for the timed transport |
| 10 | Secrets in the Air | Install relays and stop the Town Hall bombing | Bring a firearm for the timed underground disarm |
| 11 | Toxic Relationships | Bait and kill the Toxin Chimera | Use ranged attacks and clear summons before chasing the boss |
| 12 | School’s Out | Cross the school Dark Zone, recover the archive, rescue Camilo | Enter in daylight and preserve quiet weapons |
| 13 | Requiem for a Scream | Enter the cement plant and defeat the Matriarch | Keep stamina for pursuit; the boss repeatedly relocates |
| 14 | One Flew Over the Volatiles’ Nest | Defeat the Phantom and collect three blood samples | Turn up audio and bring UV; the final escape is forced |
| 15 | Buried Truths | Defeat the Colossus and finish the Beast skill tree | Bring bandages and a strong melee weapon |
| 16 | Cries Trapped in the Walls | Infiltrate the asylum, escape, defend Town Hall | Activate Fishermen Island Tower first and stock military medkits |
| 17 | The Bait and The Beast | Collect gas, lure the Beast, weaken it for Lydia | Carry both canisters yourself in co-op if progression is unreliable |
| 18 | The Last Supper | Enter the castle, cross the complex, defeat the Baron | Bring accurate guns, a shotgun, best melee weapon, and maximum healing |
Opening route: Rise and Shine through First Blood
1. Rise and Shine
Crawl to the fallen soldier, take the radio, and follow Olivia’s directions to the UV flashlight and ventilation route. In the post-operation rooms, use the adrenaline near the cart of yellow vials to regain full movement. The first infected is a stamina tutorial: short attacks, one defensive action, then a pause. Emptying the bar with repeated swings leaves Kyle unable to block or create distance.
The operating room is not meant to be cleared. Crawl beneath furniture and medical equipment, keep the distracted infected between you and open floor, and move toward the far exit. If a fast infected notices you, retreat through a tight opening instead of trying to win a noisy room-wide fight. Later, take the pipe and call the elevator. The crowd release is the intended Beast sequence, so attack aggressively only after the transformation begins.
When the elevator stops, climb out, move across the beams and pipes, and look upward for the ventilation opening. Follow the painted route through the warehouse. The closing blast doors are a pure sprint: do not turn for loot or try to fight the pursuing infected.
2. Safe Haven
Follow the path through the woods to the monastery. The obvious gate is not the only route; look left and upward for a climb. A decoy near the statue can pull the infected away from the entrance. Once inside, crawl beneath the grate to reach the generator system.
Trace the cables before flipping switches. Clear immediate rooms, close any usable entrance, then climb through the upper floors and bell tower to restore the lights. Powering a location safely is a recurring Castor Woods rule: the final switch is only useful if Kyle has a clear retreat and the surrounding infected cannot walk directly into the control room.
The Reaper charges in a straight line and uses broad arm sweeps. Put a column behind Kyle, bait the charge, step aside, and punish the collision recovery. In the second phase, a roar calls ordinary infected. Do not chase them around the arena. Keep the Reaper lined up so its own movement disrupts the crowd, then use the recovery after a charge or ground strike for two or three deliberate hits.
3. Life After Life
After the monastery unlocks Kyle’s stash, workbench, skills, map, and open-world exploration, follow the smoke to a survivor and then continue to Town Hall. Use rooftops to avoid the street crowd, climb over the perimeter, and take the pistol inside. Save its ammunition: the inner courtyard contains explosives that are more valuable against the incoming Defect than against ordinary biters.
Against the Defect, detonate canisters beside it, then close for head damage while it is stunned. Its wide area attack punishes players who remain beside it after the opening ends. After the fight, go through the window the boss used, climb the exterior route, and find the sheriff above.
Restoring Town Hall power requires more than starting the generator. Take the long cable from the box, climb back through the roof route, and connect it at the clock or library tower. Do not drag the cable through every obstacle at ground level. The elevated route keeps it within length and avoids the infected below.

4. The Beast Within
Meet Jacob on Town Hall’s upper level. The mission forces a night route, so identify the nearest UV refuge before stepping outside. Investigate the rooftop body, then use Survivor Sense to follow the yellow trail. After the explosion, search the illuminated truck and recover the radio that points toward the church.
The front church door is a false destination. Descend toward the cemetery or lower level, enter through the catacomb route, and crawl through the opening beside the blocked passage. Inside the sleeper-filled hall, turn off the flashlight, crouch, and avoid touching bodies. Move the plank at the far side, climb into the main church, and clear only the enemies that interfere with the ascent.
Start from the wooden scaffolding near the statue, move along the stone ledges, and lower the balcony ladder as insurance. Use the chandelier and hanging rope to reach the opposite side, then continue around the interior wall to the roof. The train tunnel lies south of the church along the tracks. A giant inside is slow enough to dodge rather than block. After the wounded soldier’s sequence, run back along the route. UV can interrupt a pursuer, but stopping to fight Volatiles is the mistake this escape is designed to punish.
5. First Blood
Meet Olivia, take a vehicle toward the western overpass, and inspect the open truck bed for the blue notebook. The trail leads through water and into the foggy swamp. Use Survivor Sense around the bus and metal capsule to trigger the Mist encounter.
The Mist uses ordinary infected as moving platforms for lunges and keeps adding bodies to the arena. Circle the edge, remove enough summons to preserve a clean dodge lane, and strike after a missed leap or while it calls another wave. Its second phase accelerates the spit sequence, so lateral movement matters more than rushing forward. Crowd-control explosives are useful, but do not stand inside their noise radius waiting for the boss.

Power, Chimeras, the mine, and the mountain community
6. Power Gambit
At the hydroelectric station, reach Largo through the roofs and broken window rather than fighting the full yard. Enter the ventilation route, clear the first turbine hall, and treat bloaters as ranged hazards. A belly hit creates an explosion and noise; a headshot is the safer answer when Kyle must keep the room quiet.
Open the floor hatch, dive into the flooded section, and use the air pockets. Close the valves around the breach, then return to the control-room side. Start the auxiliary generator, move the cart, break the blocked grate from the correct side, and carry the cable from the electrical unit to the pump socket.
When the turbines still refuse to start, inspect backup conduit 2C. The valve key is in the storage room reached through the high ventilation opening; look on the shelving near the tools. Open both backup valves, deal with the bloaters at range, and restart the turbines. After Largo is forced to betray Kyle, Beast Mode turns the power station into a human-combat lesson: shooters first, fighters second, brutes last. Restore the system again before returning to Town Hall.
7. A New Strain
Investigate the gas hardware near the monument, then travel to the E&F chemical plant. Approach from the tanks, cross the high structures, and enter from the roof. Quietly remove isolated soldiers before dropping inside. Follow the blue cable from the Chimera enclosure to the scientist, then use the basement ventilation route to recover the gas cylinder.
Load the cylinder into the nearby pickup, drive to the junkyard bait device, and defend it from the Baron’s troops before releasing the gas. The Leviathan’s charge and ground pound create the real openings. Dodge across its travel line, not directly backward. Explosives work well against the boss and can reduce the runner pressure that follows the second phase. Spend Beast Mode after the boss begins chaining attacks, not during its slow opening pattern.
8. Vengeance Is Mine
Meet the sheriff near the mountain convoy and approach the mine from either flank. The site contains enough soldiers that a frontal assault consumes resources needed for the escape. Takedown isolated guards, use the breakable wall to release infected into one defended sector, and clear the final grotto before touching the container controls.
After the confrontation and collapse, climb through the ceiling route into the Volatile lair. Two major infected patrol the burrow. Do not attempt a cleanup. Move northeast toward the adit; if detection starts a chase, commit to the tunnel and continue until daylight. Back at Town Hall, the political situation has changed and the next lead points north.
9. Some Like It Dark
Cross the northern bridge, meet Sven after clearing the farm, and investigate the missing group. Search the house beside the smoking harvester through its broken window, climb to the attic, and inspect the outpost map. A second red-brick house contains a radio that redirects the search to the pig farm.
After the ambush, clear the soldiers, reach the stopped prisoner transport near the river, and use the serum. The next drive is timed. Get into the prisoners’ vehicle and take the cleanest road to the mountain shelter; roadside loot is not worth failing the transport. Finish the meeting, collect the radio amplifier, and keep the newly awarded grappling hook equipped for the tower work ahead.
10. Secrets in the Air
Install the first amplifier on the red-and-white transmission tower, then obtain a Baron’s radio from the patrol near the Boutique Dark Zone. The northern-community equipment still needs more coverage, so clear the convoy at the tunnel entrance and take the green relay box from the transporter.
The fenced tower cannot be climbed from its base. Follow the power lines to the connected structure and use the cable approach. Inside the later tower, climb from the wooden booth to the broken masonry, use the rope to cross the gap, work around the statue base, and enter the belfry through the upper window.
Once the relay exposes the bombing plan, sprint to the tunnel south of Town Hall. The first bomb is between the central arches; two more are attached to columns in the following room. Kill only soldiers blocking an interaction. Disarm first, loot later.
11. Toxic Relationships
Meet Olivia in the southeastern National Park and find the cylinder near the barrier and large stone. Place it in the red bait device. The Toxin keeps distance, spits directly or across an area, and summons ordinary infected. A bow, firearm, or throwing weapon is more reliable than chasing it around the arena. Clear the summons, wait for its landing, hit the back, and move before the next pool or volley.

School, factory, Volatile nest, and the asylum
12. School’s Out
Meet Ray at the school bus and enter through the high window on the right wing. This Dark Zone is a patience test. A Volatile-like patrol and multiple fast infected move through linked rooms. Use furniture, vents, and crawl gaps; do not turn the school into one continuous gunfight. The path passes the library, laboratory, flooded corridor, concert hall, and locker-room side of the final corridor.
Past the UV boundary, find Camilo and clear the basement route so he can leave. His key opens the Baron’s archive locker in the gym. When soldiers and bandits start fighting, take the documents and use the right-side corridor to exit rather than clearing both factions.
Ray’s crashed car lies near the Pharmacy Dark Zone. Clear the brute and spitter, inspect him, then follow Camilo’s trail to the blue house. Enter through the second-floor opening, use the interior shaft, descend to the piano level, and open the double wooden door beside it.
13. Requiem for a Scream
At the cement plant, cross by the suspended green container and use the conveyor route into the building. The Matriarch alternates between a fast lunge, a scream that calls runners, and a mist retreat. Do not follow blindly through the smoke. Deal with the first wave, watch where the boss reappears, dodge the lunge, and use its recovery for damage. The second phase adds more runners and more frequent lunges, so preserving stamina is more important than landing a long combo.
14. One Flew Over the Volatiles’ Nest
Enter the cave west of the mountain shelter, bypass the first infected, and follow the blue rope to the dead scientist. The Phantom is invisible between attacks. Listen for its breath and pre-attack sound; dodge when the audio cue commits, then turn and punish the visible recovery. Randomly swinging into darkness wastes durability and leaves Kyle facing the wrong direction.
Deeper in the nest, quietly approach three seated Volatiles and collect the required blood. Plan the exit before taking the third sample. That interaction starts the chase, so finish any nearby collectible check beforehand and run directly to the marked crevice.
15. Buried Truths
Meet Olivia at the wastewater treatment plant. The Colossus waits in the lower greenhouse-like section: look for the broken guardrail and ceiling-mesh opening, descend, then remove the wooden barricade. Craft healing before interacting with the metal plate because the arena is enclosed.
The Colossus is slow but controls space with stomps, ground pounds, and a forward shockwave. Toxic containers around the arena can damage either side. Bait the boss into breaking them while Kyle is already moving away. At the phase change, remove runners immediately and stay outside the repeated slam sequence. This final Chimera sample completes the Beast skill tree, making it a sensible point to finish any combat-heavy side quests before the asylum.
16. Cries Trapped in the Walls
Activate Fishermen Island Tower, also called the Paradise Island safe point, before starting. Lydia’s psychic masking lets Kyle move among the asylum infected, but contact or a takedown can break the effect. Noise is less important than physical distance. Walk through gaps and do not assassinate a target simply because its back is turned.
Inside, reach Block A, use the vent to descend, and restore power at the basement generator. A Volatile may investigate the sound. Let it enter, slip out, and use the elevator shaft to reach the first floor. The access card is with the dead doctor beyond the padded room and bathroom vent.
Enter Block B through the now-accessible route. The medical storage uses a biometric reader, so you need the dead doctor’s hand from the side room reached by another vent. Return to storage, loot the mission medicine, and prepare for an immediate chase through Block B, Block A, the exit window, and the gardens. The route ends toward water and the Fishermen Island UV point; this is why opening it first saves a punishing final stretch.
Sleep until daylight before meeting Lydia. Town Hall then comes under attack. Reach it within the first timer, disable the gas device, and destroy three mortar nests during the longer countdown. Grab ammunition from the weapon crates at each nest, return, and collect the gas grenades. The defense ends with one heavy Chimera and then a pair. Focus one target until Lydia can control it; a weakened ally reduces the two-boss problem to a manageable single target. Standing between both charge lanes is the fastest way to lose the encounter.
The Bait and The Beast and The Last Supper
17. The Bait and The Beast
Return to the E&F plant basement and retrieve two red-gas canisters. A Volatile now patrols the old route. Use the vent near the door to reach the canister room, carry one out, place it at the marked wall opening, then repeat. In co-op, let the quest owner carry and place both if the second interaction refuses to advance for a partner.
The bait truck sequence passes 27 checkpoints on the way to the cave. Fuel is part of the scripted event, so concentrate on staying on the marked course. Third-person driving can make the checkpoint line easier to read.
In the cave, the goal is to weaken the Beast for Lydia, not kill it. Let her first control attempt play out, then attack in short windows after a leap or lunge. Preserve healing and do not spend Beast Mode in the opening seconds. The second phase adds a frontal ground-pound shockwave and a grab. Dodge laterally, escape the grab prompt quickly, and stop attacking before stamina falls below a safe dodge reserve. The fight ends automatically at low health.

18. The Last Supper
Bring a revolver or other accurate sidearm, a shotgun, a marksman option, a high-damage melee weapon, full ammunition, and the best healing you can craft. Swim north from the lake toward the island and enter the tunnel. Use C4 at the marked walls, follow the ledges and wall runs, break the barricade, and climb beside the locked door. After the third charge, the lockpicked door opens the route into the castle.
Eliminate snipers before fighting the ground force. In solo play, take as many silent shots as possible before the alarm; in co-op, divide the sightlines. Open the gate once the snipers are gone so allies can enter. Inside, use the elevator, remove the sniper above the rail tunnel, then drive past the remaining tunnel enemies rather than spending ammunition on them.
The laboratory encounter releases four heavy Chimeras across the sequence. Melee is more efficient than emptying guns into them. Work one health bar down, save Beast Mode for the moment additional Chimeras overlap, and let Lydia take control of weakened targets. A controlled Chimera can still damage Kyle, so do not stand beside its attacks.
In the complex, press the door control, clear the first room, take the first right, unlock the door at the corridor end, and continue through the room with the broken window. Turn left, use the next door control, proceed to Cell Block 1C, and find Aiden in the right-hand cell near the end.
The Baron begins as a ranged human opponent. Remove his soldiers, use the shotgun on runners, and move away from grenade markers. In the Beast phase, most combos end in a ground pound, so the apparent opening after the arm sequence is a trap. Wait for the slam, jump the shockwave when required, land a short answer, and retreat with at least 40 percent stamina. In the final phase, a high leap signals the strongest slam; the backward retreat signals an immediate lunge. Jump the former and sidestep the latter.

Chimera and boss quick-reference desk
| Boss | Threat to read | Reliable response |
|---|---|---|
| Reaper | Straight charge and wide blade sweep | Bait a column collision, then take a short head-damage window |
| Defect | Slow area attacks | Detonate courtyard canisters nearby and punish the stun |
| Mist | Leaps from summoned infected | Clear a dodge lane; hit after a failed leap or during a summon |
| Leviathan | Charge, shockwave, second-phase crowd | Dodge across the charge and use explosives after it commits |
| Toxin | Ranged spit and constant repositioning | Kill summons, use ranged tools, strike after the landing |
| Matriarch | Mist retreat and runner scream | Do not chase smoke; remove runners and wait for the lunge |
| Phantom | Invisibility between attacks | Use audio to time the dodge, then punish visible recovery |
| Colossus | Ground-pound chains and toxic crates | Bait environmental damage, leave before the repeated slam |
| The Beast | High damage, limited healing, shockwave | Two or three hits only; conserve stamina and Beast Mode |
| The Baron | Grenades, combo-ending slam, final lunge | Clear adds, jump the slam, sidestep the lunge, never overcommit |
All 20 side-quest completions
Good Samaritan requires 20 completions, not merely the 14 headline quest pages commonly listed. Killing Streak is a five-part chain, and the full checklist also includes The Cable Guy and The Fast and Fortunate. One title appears as A Sign of Love in several references and as A Sign of Hope in another; use the wording displayed in your current quest log.
| Region or stage | Quest completion | Cleanup reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town | What Lurks Beyond the Pines | Finish nearby safe points while the city route is active |
| Old Town | Killing Streak: Volume One through Final Chapter | Five separate completions; the final chapter opens a newspaper and recipe pickup |
| Old Town | The Cable Guy | Chief Engineer office safe code: 27-01-15 |
| Old Town | Dead Beats | Use the quest marker rather than assuming every band-related location is required |
| Old Town | Good Vibrations | Recheck the journal after the radio call before leaving the area |
| Old Town | Precious Cargo | Use the magnetic crane and restore warehouse power |
| Industrial Zone | Hydro-Puzzle | Two safes: 27-01-15 and 21-69-35 |
| Industrial Zone | Trouble in Paradise | Activate the island safe point; it later shortens the asylum escape |
| Villa Area | Last Wish | The first objective safe uses 20-07-06 |
| Villa Area | Don’t Look Back in Anger | Gather both ritual ingredients before traveling to Starchild |
| Villa Area | Chain Reaction | Lucy and Selby are in the first room on the left during the timer |
| Villa Area | For Your Mind Only | Finish telepath-related errands before the late main-story lock-in |
| Villa Area | Stay Human | Search the pharmacy, fashion store, mountain resort, and final farm |
| Villa Area | A Sign of Love / A Sign of Hope | Required for a newspaper that counts toward Family Picture |
| Farmlands | The Fast and Fortunate | Needs Efficient Driving and Collision Expert; win gold in all four races |
| National Park | Hunting Yaga | Start at night, then change to day after collecting Yaga’s trophy |
Hydro-Puzzle
Inspect the pumping station and travel to the Waterworks Repair Facility. Reach the payroll office through the vent and open the desk safe with 27-01-15 to obtain the Chief Engineer’s Key. After the meeting downstairs, continue to the sewer maintenance point. Use UV on the wall to reveal 21-69-35, open the second safe, restore the machinery, and follow the pipe noise to the trapped family. On the way out, use the ventilation bypass to disable the electrified floor plates before leading anyone through.
Precious Cargo
Use Survivor Sense beside the water duct to locate the submerged container. Of the three highlighted cranes, use the one with the magnet near the white truck. It lacks power, so enter the warehouse, restore the switchgear, and return to the crane. A later negotiation changes the immediate share of cargo rather than the main story. If supplies are tight, one-crate compromise preserves useful military medkits for the late game.
Trouble in Paradise
Clear Paradise Island carefully and activate the tower safe point at the top. If the objective does not advance, search the perimeter for one infected that dropped out of combat. Follow the electrical cable to the water, return to unplug the damaged line, and complete the repair. The safe point is strategically important because Cries Trapped in the Walls ends its asylum chase in this direction.
Last Wish
Visit the old house and Henry’s grave, investigate the family trail, then continue to Henry’s shop. The objective safe uses 20-07-06. At the later barn, enter through the broken rear window, remove the archer quietly, and use Survivor Sense to identify the correct safe among the three. Return the music box to Iris.
Stay Human
Search the abandoned Pharmacy Dark Zone and lockpick the back room. The medicine fridge is empty, so continue to the fashion store and take the Bloodsucking Bunnies shirt from the changing-room rack. At the mountain resort, clear the raiders, collect two wine bottles from the cellar, then use the low vent and yellow pipe route to reach the attic for the family drawing. The final farm visit completes Liam’s story; return to the cave with the gifts.
Chain Reaction
At Camping Park, close the red-gas valves instead of trying to kill an endlessly attracted crowd. Recover the rations and fuel from the outpost, load the truck, and drive when the countdown begins. In the destination house, Lucy and Selby are in the first room on the left before the sofa. Vaulting deeper into the building wastes the short search timer. The final dialogue choice changes the scene, not the main campaign route.
Don’t Look Back in Anger
Take bark from the Tree of Madness in Golden Pine, then reach the abandoned swamp house from the rear ladder and roof opening. Descend through the interior gaps and collect a gallbladder from the infected below. At Starchild’s oasis, the vision fight is not solved by chasing the invulnerable spitter. Kill runners to fill Beast Mode, transform, then damage the spitter when its health bar becomes active.
Hunting Yaga
Accept the high-level quest at the Abandoned House safe zone and sleep until night. Move toward the wrecked car with the flashlight off, pulse Survivor Sense, and wait for Volatile patrols to turn away. Follow Yaga’s tracks, kill the target, and take the trophy. You can safely advance to daytime before meeting Max. Clear the soldiers at his hut, then follow the vehicle trail to the riverside cabin and deal with the scientist. The final choice does not remove the Hunting Crossbow reward.
Safe zones, relays, and seven-region cleanup
The base-game exploration achievements use two overlapping networks: 9 Safe Zones plus 13 Safe Spots, and 9 transformer stations. The map can display both under broad activity icons, so verify the achievement counter or completed-map state instead of assuming every UV bed also counts as a transformer.
- Approach during daylight and identify the final control panel before fighting.
- Clear only the enemies that can interrupt an interaction.
- Trace cables from the destination back to missing breakers, plugs, or generators.
- Lower ladders and open shortcuts before throwing the final switch.
- Confirm UV lights, bed, stash, or map color changed before leaving.
| Region | Efficient first sweep | Return reason |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town | Town Hall, library/clock tower, roofs, early side quests | Killing Streak chain, hidden interiors, late attacks |
| National Park | Road access, isolated safe houses, daylight landmarks | Hunting Yaga and night-only routes |
| Villa Area | Safe points first, then linked narrative side quests | Last Wish safes and telepath storylines |
| Mental Asylum | Open Fishermen/Paradise Island refuge before the mission | Six asylum records and Restored Land clearing |
| Farmlands | Vehicle skills, road repair, transformer route | Four Travis races and cleanup circuits |
| Industrial Zone | Hydro-Puzzle, E&F routes, factory safe points | Collectibles inside mission facilities |
| Recreation Island | Paradise Island tower and water routes | Asylum escape, Hydro-Puzzle, permanent clearing |
In Restored Land, the same regional plan becomes permanent reclamation. Infected do not respawn after an area is truly cleared, high-risk activities need only be completed once, and the map threat display shows progress. That also means loot does not renew. Sweep the perimeter, safe points, Dark Zones, convoys, hives, and remaining threat pockets before declaring a region complete.
Safe codes and puzzle answers
The following combinations were readable in the captured community references and, where a quest was available, checked against the puzzle route. Steam Community pages carried removed/incompatible warning banners, so this table intentionally excludes unclear or contradictory entries.
| Location or quest | Combination | Clue or reward context |
|---|---|---|
| Hydro-Puzzle: Chief Engineer office | 27-01-15 | Opens the safe containing the Chief Engineer’s Key |
| Hydro-Puzzle: sewer stash | 21-69-35 | UV writing on the wall reveals the combination |
| Last Wish: Iris sequence | 20-07-06 | Required objective safe |
| Last Wish: optional safe | 11-17-08 | Optional valuables |
| Last Wish: optional safe | 71-61-45 | Corrected community value; optional valuables |
| Villa Area school director’s office | 05-40-90 | Convert the binary values on the board to decimal |
| Abandoned rocker house / Golden Pine | 02-02-19 | Bloody Rabbits concert date; Sunray revolver cache |
| Northern Old Town hotel | 07-06-01 | Count the pencils, books, and televisions |
| Civic Center / passport office | 11-51-16 | Valuables cache |
| School Dark Zone | 05-40-90 | Same binary-to-decimal clue family |
| Infected experiment chamber | 15-22-40 | Whiteboard text revealed under UV |
Leading zeroes are included to match the clue formatting. If a safe accepts ordinary integer positions, entering 5 rather than 05 does not change the dial value.
42-achievement and replay roadmap

- Nightmare: complete the story on Nightmare for The Nightmare is over. Do not assume lowering difficulty mid-run preserves the condition.
- Restored Land: finish the mode, clear its safe network, high-risk activities, side quests, and all seven regions for the Restored Land achievement set.
- One Life: attempt Unbeatable only after a successful Restored Land practice run. One Life is full permadeath; it is not a sensible discovery playthrough.
Restored Land and One Life preparation
Restored Land changes the value of almost every small decision. Killed infected stay dead, but containers and useful world items do not refill. Shops have reduced stock and higher prices. Food, crafting materials, and flashlight batteries become a finite route budget. Dark Zones, convoys, and hives are permanent victories once completed.
- Clear outward from a safe point. Do not create isolated empty pockets with no bed, stash, or UV return.
- Loot after combat, not during it. Permanent kills mean the area will be safer when you return; death can cost far more than one container is worth.
- Reserve batteries for mandatory interiors. Daylight and memorized roof routes should handle ordinary travel.
- Mark finite medicine. Military medkits belong to the asylum, multi-Chimera defense, Beast cave, and finale unless a lesser fight is genuinely blocking progress.
- Complete one region at a time. Watch the threat indicator and revisit the boundary for missed pockets before moving your resource base.
- Practice every timed mission in a non-permadeath file. The Town Hall defense and late boss chain are poor places to learn a route in One Life.
Common mistakes and fast recovery
| Problem | Why it happens | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The Beast Within feels impossible | Trying to fight Volatiles during an early forced night route | Use rooftops, Survivor Sense, brief UV interrupts, and the nearest refuge |
| Power cable will not reach | Dragging it along the street rather than using the intended roof route | Drop it, return to the source, and take the direct elevated path |
| Hydroelectric station remains flooded | Starting pumps before closing both breach valves or powering the unit | Recheck the submerged sections, generator, cable socket, and conduit 2C |
| School Dark Zone becomes a swarm | Using guns or touching every patrol | Reload the entrance, enter during day, and use vents and furniture lanes |
| Asylum masking breaks | Touching or attacking an infected | Reload the checkpoint and keep physical distance; do not use takedowns |
| Town Hall defense timer expires | Fighting every enemy before interacting with gas or mortars | Make a lane, complete the device, then use crates at each nest |
| Two-Chimera fights overwhelm Kyle | Splitting damage and standing between attack lanes | Focus one health bar until Lydia controls it, then switch |
| Good Samaritan stays locked | Counting Killing Streak as one quest or missing Cable Guy/Fast and Fortunate | Compare the journal against the full 20-completion list |
| Family Picture stays locked | Attempting the newspaper sweep before quest-gated locations open | Finish Killing Streak: Final Chapter and A Sign of Love first |
| Co-op objective will not advance | A guest carried a unique canister or quest item | Reload and let the host collect and place every required copy |
