The Inheritance of Crimson Manor Walkthrough: Keys, Legacy, and Missables

The main staircase and family portrait inside the Victorian Crimson Manor

You are usually not stuck in The Inheritance of Crimson Manor because one riddle is impossible. You are stuck because its answer opens a container in another room, and that container starts a different chain. The practical way through the manor is to track the item you need next, the room that produces it, and the door or mechanism that consumes it.

This walkthrough follows that dependency logic. It clears the children’s-room and Study loops before the Ballroom, carries the first bronze medallion into the Art Room phase, and then follows Hadley Strange’s remaining legacy to the Secret Chamber. Exact dial positions and old puzzle layouts are intentionally not treated as permanent: the developer changed and fixed several devices after launch, while the current game provides a dynamic hint system and map icons for unresolved puzzles.

Version boundary: this guide was checked on July 17, 2026 against the current Steam metadata, the 12-item Steam achievement list, official developer pages, the latest publicly exposed versioned update notes, and supplied walkthrough references. The game released on May 5, 2022. Three additional walkthrough pages are labeled 2020 and even use the older name “Criminal Instinct” for the collectibles now covered as Penny Dreadfuls, so they are used only to verify stable room and item relationships. Steam’s latest version-numbered game announcement available during research is the Anniversary Update labeled version 1.1; later official news does not expose a newer client number. If a device differs from an older screenshot, follow the clue in your current notebook and the active puzzle marker rather than forcing the old arrangement.

Use the map as a dependency board

The manor is non-linear, but it is not random. A solved mechanism normally gives one of four useful outputs: a key, a clue copied into the notebook, a component for another mechanism, or a collectible. Before leaving a room, classify the result.

  • A key names the next door. Test it where the room name or key motif makes sense, then confirm the newly opened area on the map.
  • A clue belongs to a device elsewhere. Do not try to memorize the picture. Let the notebook preserve it and compare the live drawing at the destination.
  • A component belongs to a visible empty socket. The Chemical Battery, Hand Crank Wheel, Light Bulb, Clock Face, Clock Hand, three Iron Gears, and three Zoopraxiscope Disks are route pieces, not optional inspection objects.
  • A room can remain useful after its main door opens. The Study, Private Room, Library, Attic, Dining Room, and Master Bedroom all feed later legacy chains.

Version 1.1 added puzzle icons to the map specifically to show pending mechanisms. When you lose the route, open the inventory and map together: choose one unused key or component, then revisit only rooms with a relevant unresolved marker. That is faster than sweeping all 24 rooms after every unlock.

Clear the Study loop before the Ballroom

The upper and lower wings expose several objectives at once, but the route is cleaner if you finish each clue-and-reward loop before starting another. Pick up notes and Penny Dreadfuls as you pass them; the sequence below is about preventing backtracking, not forbidding side exploration.

  1. Restore the entrance and take the manor map. Search the lower drawers of the large cabinet in the opening hall for the missing Door Knob, install it on the double doors, and enter the Vestibule. Take the floor plan from the round table before choosing a wing.
  2. Turn the Study desk into access to the children’s rooms. Inspect the locked center drawer, then open the mail organizer on the table outside the Library to obtain the Desk Key. The drawer in the Study yields the Train Motif Key. Use it on Nicholas’s Bedroom from the corridor shared with the Twins Room.
  3. Collect the two children’s-room clues before leaving that floor. The soldier illustration in the Twins Room is the model for the segmented cylinder in the hall; matching the live illustration releases the Chemical Battery. In Nicholas’s Bedroom, arrange the letter blocks to read EUREKA, inspect Tom and the Nutty Pig for the later Toy Tester cleanup, and then return to the Twins Room for the Gas Lighter. Do not force an old corner-button sequence if the table box in your build behaves differently.
  4. Reveal the Study safe, but finish the Library before trying to open it. Type EUREKA on the Study typewriter. The portrait moves and exposes both a strongbox and a time clue, but its key comes from the next loop. Leaving the safe closed at this point is expected.
  5. Use the Chemical Battery to obtain the Monocular. Power the purple lamp in the Library, leave it on, and view the illuminated symbols from the footprint marker on the upper gallery. The notebook records the symbol set. Enter that set on the tall box in the Study to release the Monocular. While upstairs in the Library, complete the painting-spine book mechanism and take the first Phonograph Cylinder.
  6. Finish the globe, watch, and first medallion as one Study loop. View the Study wall map through the Monocular, then reproduce the recorded expedition route on the globe. Its drawer contains the West Wing Key and a pocket watch. Set the watch to the time shown behind the moved portrait, clear its internal gear opening, and take the Strongbox Key. Use that key on the Study safe and collect the bronze medallion before moving into the West Wing.
  7. Open the Private Room and collect the Ballroom Hall Key. Use the West Wing Key at the Vestibule door and inspect the accessible Private Room, especially its chess and music clues. The upper West Wing remains reachable from the main stairs: solve the maze box in the Family Room for the Ballroom Hall Key, then use it on the corridor door behind the Library.
  8. Turn the three cylinders into the Harp Key. One cylinder came from the Library. A second is hidden by the portrait mechanism in the Ballroom, where the Monocular and the clue card identify the relevant paintings. For the third, light the Library fireplace with the Gas Lighter, read the revealed book-order clue, and solve the matching book mechanism in the Ballroom Hall. Play the complete cylinder set at the Ballroom phonograph to release the Harp Key and satisfy the route condition associated with Music Critic.
  9. Use the Ballroom and Music Room routes to clear Guest access. The Harp Key opens the Ballroom-side connection toward the Game Room and also the Music Room. In the Game Room, use the Private Room’s chess clue to obtain the Guest Room Key and solve the other mechanism for the Disguised Key. The Music Room clue sends you back to Nicholas’s Bedroom for the Crown Shaped Key; use it to open the Twins Closet now so its later legacy items do not require another unlock trip. In the Guest Room, combine the telephone card with the directory rather than copying a number from an old build; the completed call releases the Service Key, which opens the service corridor from the Private Room.
  10. Finish the Sword, Attic, and Lion chains. Take the Laundry Room Hall clue, obtain one Crusader Knight figurine in the Dining Room, and use the Disguised Key for the other figurine in the Vestibule. Complete the Private Room knight mechanism and take the Sword Key, which opens the Drawing Room connections and the upper East Wing. Reveal the Drawing Room clue, retrieve the Screwdriver from the service-side upper corridor, free the Hand Crank Wheel in the Laundry Room, and install it in the Family Room to lower the Attic stairs. Finally, bring the Light Bulb from the Master Bedroom Closet to the Attic mechanism and take the Lion Key for the Art Room doors.

If one step appears complete but the next item is absent, check the mechanism itself before restarting. Official updates fixed cases where the West Wing Key could disappear after quitting, a mask could require a reload, Library books could jam when moved too quickly, and the Sword Key hitbox could be hard to select. Save, reload, and inspect the reward point once before assuming the entire route is broken.

When an old solution no longer matches

The Drawing Room device is different from a screenshot
Do not reproduce the old sliding sequence. Supplied guide comments explicitly report a replacement rotating-disc version. Use the live clue and current interaction prompts.
The attic sliding puzzle is slowing the route
Official version 1.02 added a Skip button to the sliding-block puzzle. Use the control offered by the current build if your goal is route progress rather than solving that device manually.
The steam-pressure reading changes when handles are moved quickly
Move one control, wait for the gauge to settle, and keep the total within the instruction printed beside the device. The official week-one update says the puzzle was retuned and its instructions clarified.
A Library mechanism jams
Stop rapid input, save, and reload before trying again. Version 1.1 specifically fixed rotating-bookshelf books becoming stuck when the shelf or books were moved too quickly.
A solved puzzle produced no usable reward
Inspect the exact reward socket, save, and reload once. Official notes document fixes for the West Wing Key, Drawing Room mask, and Sword Key interaction. Do not repeat unrelated branches until that pickup point has been checked.

The supplied full-game video was independently verified as a two-ending, all-achievements walkthrough uploaded by Fredericma45 Gaming. It is not embedded here because its own Steam guide warns that developer changes made some puzzle footage obsolete. Use the dependency route above to find the correct room, then solve the device shown by the current client.

Build the legacy route around four medallions

Opening the Art Room changes the question from “Which door is next?” to “Which dependency branch can I finish?” If you followed the route above, Nicholas’s Bedroom and the Twins Closet are already open, and the Study medallion is already in your inventory. The remaining high-value unlocks are the basement, Wine Cellar, and Secret Laboratory because they supply components used by more than one legacy branch.

Open the three remaining support areas

  1. Basement: take the Shears from the Attic. Use them in the Kitchen route to obtain the Wine Cellar Key, then open the basement access from the Dining Room Hall.
  2. Wine Cellar: begin with the Boiler Room clue, open and search the Luggage Room, then use the Root Cellar clue on the basement-corridor padlock. Do not leave the cellar without the Corkscrew and Escutcheon; both feed later branches.
  3. Secret Laboratory: combine the Wine Cellar information with the reveal in the Master Bedroom, then return to the Library and open its concealed laboratory entrance.

Confirm Hermes, then collect Minerva

Hermes should already be complete. The EUREKA blocks in Nicholas’s Bedroom reveal the Study portrait’s time clue through the typewriter; the Monocular and globe then provide the pocket watch, whose internal mechanism yields the Strongbox Key. If the Study medallion is missing, audit that closed loop before searching the basement or bedrooms again.

Minerva is the heraldry and masquerade branch. The Escutcheon begins in the Wine Cellar. One Heraldic Emblem is in the Luggage Room and the other is in the Dining Room. The Corkscrew from the Wine Cellar reveals the Kitchen clue that activates the Drawing Room sequence; the Drawing Room then supplies the Masquerade Ball Mask. Bring the two emblems and the mask chain back toward the Vestibule mechanism to claim the medallion.

Collect Ulysses and Horatius

Ulysses joins the music, jewelry, and clock components. Clues from the Private Room and Family Room lead to a Crank in the Music Room; the crank releases the Musical Box Ballerina. The Twins Closet provides the Cameo Ring, which feeds the Master Bedroom mechanism and its Clock Face. The Master Bedroom also yields the Crimson Gem, used to reveal information in the Sewing Room. Complete that chain and return to the Master Bedroom Closet for the medallion.

Horatius is the three-gear branch. Retrieve one Iron Gear from the Laundry Room, one from the Root Cellar, and one from the Vestibule. Install the full set in the Dining Room mechanism. The same area supplies a Heart Shaped Key and Clock Hand; the heart key is used in the Master Bedroom to obtain the Strongbox Silver Key. That silver key opens the Attic strongbox holding the fourth medallion.

Place all four bronze medallions in the Art Room only after verifying that Hermes came from the Study, Minerva from the Vestibule branch, Ulysses from the Master Bedroom Closet, and Horatius from the Attic. This four-location audit identifies a missing branch without making you retest every device in the manor.

Open the Secret Chamber without losing the thread

The last legacy chain needs three Blood Samples and three Zoopraxiscope Disks. Treat those as two parallel sets; completing only one set does not finish the route.

  1. Take the Storage Room Key from the secret basement/legacy corridor, then open Storage from the second-floor East Wing or Master Bedroom Hall side.
  2. Search Storage and the Master Bedroom Closet for the clues that govern the blood-sample containers.
  3. Collect the Small Bronze Key in Storage and use it on the box in the Twins Closet. That box contains one Blood Sample.
  4. Solve the Storage container for a second sample, and use the Secret Laboratory’s clue chain to open its sample container.
  5. Collect one Zoopraxiscope Disk from the Library, one from Storage, and one from the Secret Laboratory.
  6. Play all three disks in the Secret Laboratory before leaving. Steam tracks this as Film Precursor, so confirm the achievement rather than merely confirming that the disks left the inventory.
  7. Carry the three Blood Samples to the Secret Chamber mechanism in the legacy corridor and finish the current in-game sequence.

An older supplied walkthrough associates the three name-entry sample boxes with Camille, Mayamia, and Nicholas. Because that guide now carries Steam removal/incompatibility warnings and later comments report altered puzzle layouts, use those names only to identify the relevant family clue. If your live prompt, spelling, or device differs, the current notebook entry is authoritative.

Collect the 18 Penny Dreadfuls before the final route

Master of Terror requires all 18 Penny Dreadfuls. A newer supplied location guide groups them as ten on the first floor, six on the second, one in the Attic, and one in the Root Cellar. Since an older guide’s author could not confirm whether missed copies persist across playthroughs, the safe plan is to collect all 18 in one run and verify the achievement before committing to the ending sequence.

Area Room Where to inspect
First floor Dining Room Drawers in the cabinet beside the white puzzle box
Drawing Room Cabinet decorated with two short yellow vases
Game Room Lower cupboard near the red curtain
Kitchen Drawer directly below the apple basket
Laundry Room Wooden table in the corner
Ballroom-side corridor Cabinet topped by two blue vases
Library Drawer next to the fireplace
Private Room Drawer between the red chair and the candlestick side table
Study Unlocked floor chest beside the bookshelves
Vestibule Drawer beside the right-hand entrance to the Art Room
Second floor Bathroom Toiletries cabinet between the sink and bathtub
Family Room Drawer near the piano
Master Bedroom Bedside drawer near the walking canes
Nicholas’s Bedroom Bedside drawer with the table lamp
Sewing Room Cupboard beside the dress forms
Twins Room Drawer in the vanity
Attic Attic Table beside a pillar near the stairs
Basement Root Cellar Wooden table near the entrance from the Wine Cellar

Count by area before leaving: 10 + 6 + 1 + 1. If the total is 17, audit containers before floor geometry. The easy misses are the Study’s unlocked floor chest, the corridor cabinet by the Ballroom, and the Root Cellar table because none looks like a major story mechanism.

Trigger Toy Tester while Nicholas’s Bedroom is open

Toy Tester is separate from opening Nicholas’s Bedroom. Search its bedside drawer for the interactive storybook Tom and the Nutty Pig. The book has six pull tabs: three across the first set of pages and three after turning to the next set. Pull every tab and wait for the achievement confirmation before closing the book.

If the achievement does not appear, reopen the book and check both spreads. Do not assume that watching each animation once is enough if one tab returned to its original position or never registered. This is the only trigger supported by the newer supplied Toy Tester guide; no additional room sweep is required by that evidence.

Audit the 12 Steam achievements by system

The current Steam page lists 12 achievements. Use the list as a route audit rather than replaying puzzles at random.

Achievement Verified trigger or audit point
Art Student Inspect the family portrait.
Expeditionary Solve the globe puzzle; confirm the West Wing Key reward is collected before quitting.
Music Critic Play all three phonograph cylinders gathered from the Library, Ballroom Hall, and Ballroom.
Operator Solve the telephone puzzle using the current notebook clue.
Strategist Complete the templar knight puzzle and take the Sword Key.
Safecracker Open every strongbox; include the Study and Attic boxes used by the medallion route.
Key Master Collect all manor keys, including keys revealed inside puzzle containers rather than lying in rooms.
Master of Unlocking Use the keys to open every door; owning the key is not the same check.
Film Precursor Play the Library, Storage, and Secret Laboratory Zoopraxiscope Disks.
Toy Tester Pull all six tabs in Tom and the Nutty Pig.
Master of Terror Find every one of the game’s 18 Penny Dreadfuls.
Pastry Cook Find the cake recipe in the Kitchen. A readable achievement reference places it behind the lower-left oven door.

For Key Master versus Master of Unlocking, separate possession from use. First compare the inventory and solved mechanisms for missing keys; then walk the map perimeter and open any door that still shows as inaccessible. For Safecracker, inspect boxes after solving them and physically take their contents. Several official fixes concerned rewards that could be awkward to select or disappear across a quit, so the pickup matters as much as the solved state.
