Hollow Knight: Silksong Walkthrough: Act Route and Act 3 Checklist

Hornet crossing a dim Pharloom street beneath tall lamps in Hollow Knight Silksong

If the Grand Gate will not open, the Threefold Song will not complete, or the credits send you back without Act 3, the problem is usually an unfinished state change rather than a missing combat win. Hollow Knight: Silksong lets exploration branch widely, but its story still passes through a small set of movement arts, bells, melodies, wishes, and post-boss choices.

This walkthrough is built as a route diagnostic. Follow the first two acts to reach the credits, then use the Act 3 checklist before returning to the Cradle. It does not pretend that every optional room belongs in one mandatory line, and it flags the two places where a choice changes the ending path.

Current-version boundary: this route was checked on July 17, 2026 against Steam app 1030300, Team Cherry’s official sites, Patch 5 version 1.0.30000 dated March 16, 2026, and readable walkthrough and completion references. Team Cherry calls Patch 5 the last significant update before the free Sea of Sorrow expansion. That expansion was announced for 2026 with new areas, bosses, and tools, but no public release date was available during research. The route below covers the released base game; future expansion content should not be forced into its act order.

Read the pilgrimage by locks, not map percentage

Silksong does not require a full map sweep before the first credits. It asks whether Hornet can answer the next kind of barrier. When you are unsure where to go, check the last permanent art or story instrument you earned and revisit the marked obstacle that matches it.

Progress check What it changes Where it points next
Silkspear Cuts dense silk and frees the Bell Beast route Return from Mosshome to The Marrow and open the first Bellway sequence.
Swift Step Adds sprint and air dash Finish the Deep Docks route, face Lace, and cross into Far Fields.
Drifter’s Cloak Turns air currents into traversal Resolve the Far Fields climb and reach Greymoor.
Cling Grip Opens sustained wall-climb routes Return through Shellwood and finish the curse over Bellhart.
Needolin Activates musical gates and special interactions Use the five-bell gate in Blasted Steps, then later choose the Soul Snare route.
Clawline Hooks rings, walls, and long gaps Complete the Citadel’s three melody branches.
Faydown Cloak Adds the high second jump used by late optional routes Finish the outside-Citadel work needed for Silk and Soul.
Silk Soar Launches Hornet vertically through Act 3 exits Revisit old regions for the Old Hearts and the final Abyss route.

A sealed ledge that asks for a later art is not evidence that the current story route is wrong. Mark it and continue toward the barrier your newest ability can solve. That distinction prevents optional Hunter’s March, Wormways, Bilewater, and collectible branches from being mistaken for a broken main quest.

Act 1: turn four movement arts into five ringing bells

Moss Grotto to the first Bellway

  1. Escape the cage in Moss Grotto, defeat Moss Mother, and climb into Bone Bottom.
  2. Travel east into The Marrow. Buy Shakra’s local maps when possible; her song is a useful navigation cue before the map is drawn.
  3. Take the Mosshome branch and bind Silkspear. Before leaving, open any nearby lift or bench route that shortens the return.
  4. Use Silkspear on the silk prison in The Marrow, defeat Bell Beast, and activate the Bellway system.

Silkspear is the important result here. A player who explored The Marrow first can see several promising exits, but the story only stabilizes after the Bell Beast is freed. Ring the large progression bell and claim the bench before moving southeast.

Deep Docks supplies speed; Far Fields tests lift

Enter Deep Docks from the lower-right side of The Marrow. Make the local bench and Bellway usable before committing to the hotter rooms. The essential prize is Swift Step. Once it is bound, open the shortcut back toward the entrance, then take the eastern combat route through Lace and ring the next story bell.

Far Fields is not cleared by simply walking east. Find the Seamstress in the lower portion of the region and complete Flexile Spines to receive the Drifter’s Cloak. The cloak makes the air columns usable. Fourth Chorus blocks the return path; defeat it, then use the restored currents and explosive vents to climb out toward Greymoor.

Greymoor offers two roads to Bellhart

Use Halfway Home as the Greymoor recovery point, then complete the local bell route. Bellhart can be reached either by defeating Moorwing or by rescuing enough fleas for the caravan trip. These are alternatives, not two mandatory gates. The combat route is direct; the caravan route rewards broader exploration.

Bellhart itself is still bound when Hornet arrives. Move into Shellwood, defeat Sister Splinter, and bind Cling Grip. Return to the town’s wall routes, descend to Widow, and break the silken curse. The reward is larger than one boss clear: the town, shops, wish board, needle upgrade, bell, and Needolin progression all become available around this pivot.

Run the Grand Gate check before climbing to Last Judge

The marked route out of Bellhart runs through Blasted Steps. Before taking the long upper ascent, verify the five lower-Pharloom Bellshrines: The Marrow, the Deep Docks/Far Fields boundary route, Greymoor, Bellhart, and Shellwood. Some maps label the boundary bell by the area on the side from which it is approached, so use the current OPEN: Grand Gate markers rather than arguing over that label. A bell visible on the map is not enough if its mechanism was never struck.

  • No gate reaction: revisit the five route hubs and physically test each bell or shrine. Do not assume buying a map marker activated it.
  • Needolin prompt but no fight: check that Bellhart was freed and that the last approach bell was rung.
  • Long runback: take the left branch near the top of Blasted Steps and secure its Bellway and bench before going right to the gate.
  • Last Judge fire damage feels inconsistent with an old guide: Patch 5 changed the death explosion from three masks to two and made Magma Bell protect against every fire-type explosion. Use current-client damage, not a launch chart.

Play the Needolin at the gate when the bells are ready. Defeating Last Judge opens the Citadel and begins Act 2.

Act 2 is a three-melody circuit around Clawline

The Citadel changes the navigation language. Surface Bellways become scarce, local maps come from machines or boards, and Ventrica stations handle short internal transfers. From Grand Gate, take the falling lift into Underworks, work toward Choral Chambers, and establish the First Shrine settlement in Songclave. Then enter Cogwork Core and defeat the Cogwork Dancers.

The dancers reveal the Threefold Song mechanism, but the three melodies are not the immediate next step. First obtain Clawline, because every melody route expects it.

Clawline setup

  1. Leave lower Cogwork Core through the route into Whispering Vaults.
  2. Open the Stage approach and the nearby Grand Bellway connection.
  3. Defeat Trobbio, then use the lift down toward the Cauldron side of Underworks.
  4. Cross the lava obstacle route, bind Clawline in the Cauldron, and open the return path above.

After binding Clawline, interact with rings near benches rather than treating them as scenery. One of those routes reaches the Twelfth Architect and another exposes the path beneath the lift.

Collect the three melodies in a low-backtrack loop

Melody Route test Easy mistake
Vaultkeeper’s Melody Send the Underworks lift away, use the opening below it, recover the Sacred Cylinder, then carry it into Whispering Vaults. Riding the lift immediately hides the route underneath.
Conductor’s Melody Reach High Halls from upper Choral Chambers and clear The Forum. Entering the arena before opening its nearby Ventrica and bench makes repeat attempts much slower.
Architect’s Melody Climb upper Cogwork Core and align the four musical pillars. Finishing one pillar too early removes its platforms; align most sections before closing each pillar.

The melodies may be collected in different orders. The stable rule is to return to the three statues only after all three have been learned. Play the completed song, ride the newly available route, and defeat Lace in the Cradle approach. A second Silk Heart is tied to this encounter.

The first credits and Act 3 are different objectives

Grand Mother Silk is the Act 2 boss. Defeating her without the Soul Snare route can produce a valid ending and roll credits, but it does not mean the postgame prerequisites were silently completed. Act 3 begins through the Snared Silk outcome, and that outcome is built before the boss room.

If the Caretaker has not offered Silk and Soul, leave the Cradle and audit the world state by quest chain:

  1. Finish Shakra’s map trail. Buy the remaining surface maps and close Trail’s End rather than checking only whether Shakra has moved.
  2. Advance the flea caravan to its final pre-Act-3 home. Readable guides disagree on whether the useful threshold should be described as 20, 25, or a “majority” of fleas. The reliable check is the active Lost Fleas quest, the caravan’s actual location, and whether its relocation dialogue has been exhausted.
  3. Clear the required wish-board chains. Revisit Bone Bottom, Bellhart, and Songclave after resting elsewhere; town donations and NPC rescues can expose later wishes only after an area reload.
  4. Open the late regions that carry prerequisites. Sands of Karak, Mount Fay, Putrified Ducts, The Slab, and Bilewater are not all required for the first credits, but their abilities, souls, maps, and wishes feed Silk and Soul.
  5. Return to the Caretaker in Songclave. The four-component request should now replace the vague “do more side content” problem with named targets.

Bring four Soul Snare components back to Songclave

Component Region Dependency to verify
Maiden’s Soul Moss Grotto / Bone Bottom side Resolve the late Skull Tyrant state and revisit the Ruined Chapel route.
Hermit’s Soul Bellhart Search from the Bellway side for the breakable route rather than the town’s main doors.
Seeker’s Soul Bilewater Complete the arena guarding the soul; merely reaching the region is not enough.
Snare Setter Weavenest Atla Use Needolin on the Weaver door, restore the nest, and inspect above the bench route.

Deliver all four to the Caretaker so the Soul Snare is constructed. Return to Grand Mother Silk. At the post-boss interaction, play the Needolin instead of choosing Bind. That distinction triggers Snared Silk and prepares the completed save for Act 3.

Act 3: secure Silk Soar before hunting Old Hearts

After the Snared Silk credits, load the completed save and clear the black-silk presentation on its slot if the menu asks you to. The opening escape drops through the damaged Cogwork Core and eventually returns Hornet to Songclave.

  1. Reach the Grand Bellway and answer the new creature in the Bellways. Defeat Bell Eater and learn Beastling Call from the freed Bell Beast.
  2. Visit Ruined Chapel and ask its Snail Shamans to begin The Dark Below.
  3. Return to Deep Docks, speak with Ballow near the Forge Daughter, and obtain the Diving Bell Key.
  4. Descend in the Diving Bell. Take a nearby Abyss bench before exploring deeply; the southern route is the safer map-first anchor.
  5. Open Weavenest Absolom with Needolin and bind Silk Soar. Do not attempt the vertical escape without it.

Silk Soar changes old ceilings into Act 3 exits. Collect it before interpreting high ledges as missing switches. Official Steam screenshot.

Silk Soar is the central Act 3 answer. Patch 5 specifically expanded its behavior through top scene exits, so an older walkthrough may describe a more awkward transition than the current PC build.

Treat the Old Hearts as three proof routes

The Snail Shamans require three Old Hearts for the late memory sequence. Multiple boss paths can supply them, so this is a choice among routes rather than a demand to clear every Act 3 hunt before progress continues.

  • Heart of the Wild: return through the Far Fields and Hunter’s March side for Skarrsinger Karmelita.
  • Heart of Might: finish the Sands of Karak and Coral Tower combat route to Crust King Khann.
  • Heart of the Woods: enter the hidden green route below Grand Gate, defeat Seth, and continue to Nyleth.
  • Conjoined Heart: Verdania’s Green Prince line can provide a substitute heart. Keep it as a memento only if the other three boss hearts will satisfy the quest.

Bring any accepted set of three back to the Shamans and complete the memory path to claim the Everbloom. That item is the protection required for the last Abyss descent. If a heart is in inventory but the quest does not advance, exhaust the related NPC dialogue and confirm that the boss reward animation completed before hunting a fourth target.

For the final route, return to the Diving Bell, descend again, and challenge Lost Lace. This is the base game’s Act 3 ending path. Optional Bellhart hunts, Mister Mushroom’s Passing of the Age sequence, completion percentage, Hunter’s Journal mastery, and every remaining mask shard can be handled around it; they are not all one mandatory staircase to Lost Lace.

Keep the ending and completion routes from overwriting each other

Silksong’s endings are not one linear upgrade from “bad” to “true.” Their requirements can conflict, so preserve a clean save state before applying an ending-specific condition.

Goal Critical condition Safe handling
Weaver Queen Defeat Grand Mother Silk and use the normal Bind outcome. Take it before assembling or using the Soul Snare if you want the straightforward Act 2 ending recorded.
Twisted Child Reach Grand Mother Silk while the Twisted Bud curse is still active. Use a separate run or preserved pre-cure save; removing the curse can close this attempt.
Snared Silk / Act 3 Complete Silk and Soul, then play Needolin after the boss. Confirm the Soul Snare quest is finished before entering the Cradle.
Sister of the Void Complete Act 3’s Old Hearts and final Abyss route. Secure Everbloom before Last Dive, then defeat Lost Lace.
Passing of the Age Finish Mister Mushroom’s Act 3 encounters, then complete an ending. Treat it as an added post-ending scene, not a replacement for the main ending choice.

The curse route is the dangerous one: it disables core recovery and combat systems and is described as missable by readable achievement references. Do not activate it casually during a general Act 3 cleanup save.

Collect health when a new art makes the route cheap

There are 20 mask shards in the released base game, and each group of four adds one mask. Four of those shards belong to Act 3 conditions, so a player at the first credits should not expect a finished health total. The efficient pattern is to collect shards during ability-driven returns:

  • Buy Bone Bottom’s shard when 300 rosaries no longer competes with essential maps and benches.
  • Use Drifter’s Cloak returns for the early Far Fields and Shellwood routes.
  • Pair Cling Grip with the Deep Docks return and Needolin with Weavenest Atla.
  • Take the Cogwork Core shard after the dancers and the Whispering Vaults shard during melody cleanup.
  • Bundle Clawline and Faydown Cloak pickups across Far Fields, Mount Fay, Blasted Steps, Wisp Thicket, and Bilewater rather than revisiting each region after every single art.
  • Leave Fastest in Pharloom, Dark Hearts, the high Mount Fay return, and The Hidden Hunter for Act 3.

This ordering strengthens the difficult Cradle and Abyss fights without turning the story walkthrough into a 100-percent checklist. Steam currently lists 52 achievements, but achievements, Hunter’s Journal entries, every map, every tool, and the three-act route measure different things.
