In Abiotic Factor, the next objective often appears before your scientist is ready to live on the other side of the door. The reliable route is therefore not a sprint from marker to marker. Each sector should end with a working shortcut, a renewable supply plan, the current access tool, and enough repair capacity to survive the first return trip.
This guide follows the released story from the Office Sector to the Residence Sector, but it stops at useful checkpoints rather than pretending every corridor has one permanent solution. It is for a solo scientist or a co-op group that knows the current objective yet cannot tell which earlier tool, portal errand, or sector handoff is missing.

Version and spoiler boundary: research closed on July 17, 2026, after Community Update #4 and hotfix 1.4.0.27939. The main story still runs through Office, Manufacturing West, Cascade Laboratories, Security, Hydroplant, Reactors, and Residence. The current build adds systems, equipment, perks, pets, and quality-of-life changes to that route, so old exact recipes and “best” loadouts were not treated as permanent. Sector names, gate items, and the final sequence below contain story spoilers.
The route is seven handoffs, not one waypoint
Read the campaign as a chain of problems. Office teaches power and gives access to Flathill. Manufacturing turns scavenged parts into industrial access. Labs makes you solve security and portal chemistry as separate jobs. Security breaks the apparent escape route. Hydroplant is a four-part commissioning task. Reactors requires a complete activation circuit before its waygate matters. Residence finally converts cold resistance and intense heat into an exit.
Three rules keep that chain from becoming a series of corpse runs:
- Finish the shortcut before the objective. Open the tram, elevator, gate, ladder, or return door while you are already beside it. A completed objective with no short return route is only half-complete.
- Test the new access item immediately. When a Keypad Hacker, protective item, chemical, or story device unlocks, use it on the nearest known blocker before loading your inventory for the next sector.
- Return on a named trigger. Go home when armor is near failure, a required crafting material has been found, clean water or healing has dropped below the planned return journey, or a portal objective has produced its gate item. Do not wait for every slot to fill.
Office: make Flathill renewable before lifting the blast door
The cafeteria sequence is not a base-building invitation. Build the Crafting Bench and Energy Brick needed to open the route, speak with the sector Security Officer, and let the Manufacturing blast door reveal the real problem: the forklift needs a Power Cell. That objective redirects you through the upper Office floors, Silo 3, and the Flathill portal.
The first Security Bot CPU is the important combat gate. A basic bot is much safer to solve as a trap problem than as a fair melee duel. Place powered defenses where the patrol must pass, keep a hammer available for repairs, and use the environment to break line of sight. Once the current Keypad Hacker recipe is available, craft it before spending rare electronics on optional furniture. The hacker opens the Silo route and also turns previously decorative keypads into shortcuts and useful side rooms.
Inside Flathill, prioritize progression over a perfect loot sweep:
- Open the shortcuts that make later visits shorter.
- Recover the Power Cells needed to continue, then mark where additional cells can be collected after a portal reset.
- Take renewable staples that solve a current shortage, especially basic food, containers, wood, plastic, computers, and healing ingredients.
- Leave portable storage near a repeatable resource route instead of carrying every low-value object through the portal immediately.
Most ordinary facility loot does not simply repopulate because a player wants another stack, while portal worlds are designed to refresh on the world’s portal-reset schedule. Flathill is therefore the point where the early economy becomes repeatable. Before using a Power Cell on the Manufacturing forklift, have a Repair and Salvage Station, a dependable water process, a respawn point, and a route back to Flathill. A larger cafeteria base can wait.
Manufacturing: run one access loop and one pump loop
Manufacturing West punishes the Office habit of exploring every open branch at once. Order soldiers can turn one noisy fight into several overlapping firing lanes, and the sector is large enough that carrying all salvage by hand wastes the supplies you came to collect. Start by reaching the Garage, the first tram connection back to Office, and the F.O.R.G.E. Talk to the Blacksmith before guessing at industrial recipes.
The first loop is about access. Find the materials revealed by the new Manufacturing resources, build the next Keypad Hacker when its recipe is satisfied, and use it to open the direct doors around Shipping, the Garage, and the Surface Tunnel route. A forklift or platform cart is useful because it separates transport capacity from the scientist’s combat load, but park it where a death does not strand every spare weapon and healing item behind the same enemy group.
The apparent Surface Tunnel escape then becomes the story’s second loop: find Frake, return to the Blacksmith, repair the yellow, green, and red Electron Pumps, and overload the Synchrotron. Treat each pump as an out-and-back job. Deposit its unique material, repair damage, and confirm the return shortcut before starting the next color. If the Synchrotron objective does not advance, check the live objective list for all three pump states rather than repeating the last route.

Do not leave Manufacturing with only a quest completion. The practical handoff is the Office-Manufacturing tram unlocked, the Blacksmith exchanges understood, the current hacker equipped, a firearm or safe ranged answer for Order positions, and a protected place for radioactive or mission-critical materials. Those checks matter more than clearing every soldier from a room that will be dangerous again later.
Labs: security access and portal chemistry are different jobs
The Synchrotron opens Cascade Laboratories, but the Labs objective chain forks into two dependencies. The first is institutional: reach the Inner Wing, find the Control Center route, and reset security. The second is chemical: reach the Mycofields, recover the material needed for the live Antethermite recipe, and use it to open the blocked Vacuum Chamber door. Trying to finish both with one overloaded inventory is the fastest way to lose the exact component that was supposed to end the trip.
For the security run, bring the current access tool, ranged damage or cover-breaking utility, spare power, and enough repair material to return through the same checkpoint. Follow signs and room names rather than a screenshot’s camera angle; elevators and containment levels make a nearby marker appear vertically close when the route begins on another floor. Resetting security changes which route is safe, so revisit the last turret or locked checkpoint before assuming the next objective is elsewhere.
For the Mycofields run, empty the inventory of generic Office scrap. The goal is a portal resource and a chemical gate, not another permanent base. Carry movement recovery, radiation or environmental protection shown by the current area, a way to mark the return route, and free slots for Anteverse materials. When the objective updates after collecting the relevant material, return to the bench and use the recipe shown by the live Compendium. Older guides disagree on the chemical’s name and ingredient list; the current recipe screen is the authority.

The Leyak is also a preparation check, not a reason to abandon the sector. Keep the current X-ray response accessible and do not bury it in general storage after learning why it exists. The Labs handoff is complete when the security reset has changed the facility route, Antethermite has cleared the Vacuum Chamber obstruction, and the door into Security can be reached without repeating the entire Control Center or Mycofields expedition.
Security: the surface elevator changes the mission
Security begins like an extraction: infiltrate the sector and reach the Large Surface Elevator. Activating it does not end the campaign. Its failure changes the objective to escaping Security by another route, which includes work in Canaan and opening the remaining gates before Hydroplant becomes available. If your log still says Reach the Surface Elevator, solve access to the elevator itself. If it says Escape the Security Sector, stop searching the elevator room for another button.
This is the point to stop carrying a single universal loadout. Use a field cache near the safe side of the sector: one container for healing and repair, one for access and portal materials, and one empty container for the return haul. Keep a backup weapon at the previous tram-linked base. Security’s long engagements and portal detours make a death recoverable only when the replacement kit is not lying in the same bag as the body.
The gate to Hydroplant should be treated as the end of a Security circuit, not permission to relocate everything. Confirm that the final Security door stays open, that the Canaan-dependent step has registered in the objective log, and that a clean route exists from your established network to the new sector. Then cross with a scouting load, not the entire pantry.
Hydroplant: commission four systems before touching the spillway
Hydroplant looks open, but its story gate is a commissioning checklist. Find the survivors at the Electrical Station, speak to the required staff, and let the objective log expose four separate jobs:
- Reactivate the Electrical Station.
- Reboot the Spillway Computer.
- Open the flow valves in the Reservoir.
- Block the interference at the Transmission Tower.
Finish one job, verify its sub-objective is checked, and return supplies to the central route before starting another. The Reservoir run wants water mobility and carrying space; the Transmission Tower wants a deliberate combat and elevation kit; the station and computer routes reward keeping power and access tools available. Packing for all four at once turns every item into dead weight on three of the routes.
Only after the four checks register should Open the spillway become actionable. The spillway then creates the route to Reactors. Before taking that wet passage, place dry replacement equipment near the Hydroplant side, repair radiation and environmental gear, and leave room for the material that clears the first Reactor obstruction. Hydroplant is a strong logistics frontier, but it does not erase the value of the tram-linked bases behind it.
Reactors: complete the activation circuit before chasing Shadowgate
The Reactor entrance immediately tests whether the previous sectors were treated as a supply chain. The fungal obstruction needs Anti-Fungal Gelatin; reaching the growth without the correct item is reconnaissance, not progress. Clear it, speak with Dr. Cahn, and let the objective order establish the reactor circuit.
Dusk is the first named activation. Return to Cahn afterward, then follow the Cloud lead and the wider objective to bring Cloud, Mist, and Gale online. The important count is the set shown in the live objective log: all four reactors, including Dusk, must register before access to the Fusion Generator becomes the real task. If one reactor appears complete in the environment but remains unchecked, revisit its final console or conversation trigger before crossing the sector again.
Once the Fusion Generator opens its waygate, the route changes from facility engineering to Shadowgate containment. Enter with a free inventory lane for new components and a way to defeat the barriers shown by the current recipes. Inside, the story asks you to reach the Intrados facility and destroy the containment devices tethering the entity. Clear the devices as a loop around the central space; do not leave after the first dramatic effect unless the objective has changed to Enter the Rift.

Residence: solve cold before trying to solve the wall
The rift does not drop you directly into the final building. Explore its destination, enter the Praetorium, and locate the Sun Disk first. The disk supplies the story state needed to resist Residence’s chill; stockpiling ordinary warmth items is not a substitute for that progression trigger.
Residence then has three separate locks that are easy to collapse into one:
- Suppress the storm to make the upper route usable.
- Develop the intense heat solution requested by the ice-wall objective. Follow the Thermocell and related heat recipes unlocked in the current client rather than an old material table.
- Access the Dark Lens only after the wall state changes and the route through Divarication is actually open.
Do not spend irreplaceable ammunition trying to brute-force an environmental object whose objective wording calls for a device or recipe. The same rule applies at the story fights: repair first, stage recovery outside the arena, and confirm the post-fight conversation or altar interaction advances the log. Leave the Facility, Activate the Altar, and The End? are separate states. The first credits sequence is not proof that every epilogue conversation, secret, collectible, or achievement is finished.
Move the frontier without moving the whole base
A full base relocation at every sector boundary creates more hauling than progression. Keep one durable production base on the tram network and add small frontier caches instead. Each cache needs a return kit, not a copy of the entire workshop:
- repair material for the armor and weapon currently in use;
- one food and clean-water cycle for the trip home;
- environmental protection for the local sector;
- an empty storage lane for objective items;
- a label or consistent container position that separates gate items from ordinary salvage.
Portal worlds can support harvesting caches because their native resources refresh on the world’s reset schedule while player-built storage persists under normal rules. Do not leave pans or pots attached to native portal-world stoves across a reset, and do not assume a custom server uses the default timing. The facility itself is better treated as a network of opened shortcuts and pre-positioned crates than as an infinite source of the same desk phones and staplers.
When the marker is right but the route is wrong
| Stuck objective | Check before searching farther ahead | Useful correction |
|---|---|---|
| Use Power Cell to access Manufacturing | Silo 3 portal activated, Flathill shortcuts opened, Power Cell actually returned through the exit | Recover the cell from Flathill and install it in the forklift supporting the Manufacturing door. |
| Fix the three Electron Pumps | Yellow, green, and red states separately checked | Revisit the missing pump and its final interaction; do not keep pressing the Synchrotron control. |
| Find a way to the Control Center | Correct Labs floor, elevator, and security route rather than straight-line marker distance | Follow room signs and open the return checkpoint while approaching the Control Center. |
| Open the Vacuum Chamber door | Mycofields material collected and current Antethermite recipe completed | Build the live recipe at the bench, then return to the physical obstruction. |
| Escape the Security Sector | Surface Elevator event completed, Canaan step registered, remaining gates opened | Follow the changed escape objective; the elevator is no longer the solution. |
| Reactivate the spillway systems | All four Hydroplant sub-objectives checked | Finish the missing station, computer, valve, or tower task before using the spillway control. |
| Activate the Reactors | Dusk plus Cloud, Mist, and Gale all registered | Return to the final console or NPC trigger in the reactor that remains unchecked. |
| Access Residence Sector | Wayseeker rift explored, Praetorium entered, Sun Disk touched | Complete the Sun Disk state change before trying to out-heal the cold. |
Keep the 1.4 systems outside the critical path
Community Update #4 is substantial, but it does not add an eighth base-game story sector. Version 1.4 introduced the Digital Garden Plot and cartridges, an Advanced Oven, test targets, pet commands, more pets, new perks, watches, foods, ammunition options, and many balance and quality-of-life changes. Those can improve a long-running world; none should be mistaken for a required replacement for Flathill, the Electron Pumps, the Labs security reset, the Hydroplant systems, the four Reactors, or the Sun Disk.
The July 15 hotfix puts Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and the PC app on version 1.4.0.27939. It also warns that third-party mods have no official support and can cause crashes or save problems after updates. If a route or recipe disappears immediately after patching, remove mods and verify the game installation before treating an old guide as a workaround.
Steam currently lists 53 achievements, but story progress, sector access, Compendium entries, portal worlds, collectibles, skill perks, and achievements are different checklists. Finish The End? before turning the campaign route into a cleanup route. The announced Entropic Break DLC was still described as upcoming in the official feed captured for this article, so it is not inserted into the released sector order.
