Last Variable is won at the handoff between cycles, not by clearing every research icon before sunrise. The important question is what will still work after Jan enters cryosleep: which region has been terraformed, which specialist is stationed in a Field Lab, which resource line is feeding storage, and whether the people left underground have enough Organics to survive the hot phase.

This spoiler-light checkpoint guide follows that chain from the damaged underground base to the final generator. It is for players who already understand the base game’s clock but are getting trapped by the DLC’s new dependencies: soil tiers, Field Labs, Qubit levels, substances, and a base that no longer moves. It does not prescribe an exact day for every optional conversation, because several objectives can advance together and specialist tasks can change the order in which they appear.
Evidence date: this snapshot uses material available through 17 July 2026. AppID 3237520 identifies The Alters: Last Variable as paid Steam DLC requiring The Alters (AppID 1601570), developed and published by 11 bit studios and released July 13, 2026. The official page describes roughly 20 hours, nine terraforming arenas, and a campaign following the branch where Jan Scientist stayed on the planet. Patch 2.0.1 shipped with the expansion and changed the engine, graphics pipeline, optimization, and several story-related systems. Treat exact UI wording and balance values below as launch-version guidance; the current objective card wins if a later patch disagrees.
Read each cycle as a three-part handoff
Every major advance crosses three systems. First, the underground base makes the tool or specialist. Second, surface work changes a region and exposes a marked site. Third, a Field Lab turns one Alter’s long assignment into the data or Qubit level required for the next technology tier. Researching only one side of that chain creates the common stall where the menu shows a promising technology but the map cannot yet support it.
| Before cryosleep | What the next cycle expects | Warning that the handoff is incomplete |
|---|---|---|
| Terraform the currently required region | A changed surface, new samples, paths, and construction markers | The next Field Lab site or resource deposit remains physically unreachable. |
| Place the marked Field Lab and assign one eligible Alter | Research data, a higher Qubit tier, or another Alter slot | The Quantum Computer still shows the old limit after waking. |
| Leave each substance line connected to storage | A reserve ready for the next Terraformer or analysis module | You wake with a new recipe but zero input stock. |
| Keep 50 Organics for every Jan sleeping inside the base | The underground crew survives the hot phase | The cryosleep summary shows an uncovered person or an empty food reserve. |
| Finish conversations and active specialist tasks | The assigned scientist can leave without abandoning his personal chain | The Field Lab refuses the assignment, or the Alter still has a task in progress. |
A Field Lab post is not another shift on the assignment screen. The Alter sent there does not return to ordinary base work. The next cycle may let you create another version, but that does not restore unfinished conversations with the one you sent away. Make the assignment late in the cycle, after he has performed the research or production job you still need underground.

Cycle 1: leave a resource loop, not a perfect base
After Famous Last Words, inspect the underground rooms, read the journal in the Captain’s Cabin, and check the damaged Laboratory and Quantum Computer. The first useful surface trip should combine three jobs: collect Metals for a Repair Kit and Mining Outpost, take loose Minerals because the main deposit is not yet available, and pick up shallow Rapidium on the route toward the Oasis. Returning with only the Laboratory repair cost wastes the same walk you need for the first Alter and Cryosleep Chamber.
Repair the Laboratory, then research the New Branching Procedure. A new Alter costs 20 Rapidium and takes time in the Womb, so start that branch while Jan repairs, explores, or builds. The early choice should answer a production problem rather than a tier list:
- Choose Geologist first if Metals and mining hours are limiting construction. His Metal extraction bonus also pairs naturally with the first large building bill.
- Choose Physicist early if the Workshop and Base Maintenance queues are already consuming Jan’s day. His crafting and maintenance bonuses protect the time needed for surface work.
- Bring Biologist forward when food or recovery is the real risk. He is the strongest Greenhouse worker and dramatically speeds Infirmary healing.
- Bring Chemist forward when refining and cooking are becoming continuous jobs. His value rises once the substance economy and larger crew are online.
The fixed underground base is forgiving about layout. Use the Command Center’s holding area to park modules while rearranging them, and remove an undamaged module for a full construction refund when a new soil tier forces a rebuild. Do not treat the holding area as usable floor space, and do not plan around moving the Airlock; it is fixed. Unlike the mobile wheel in the base campaign, mass is not the constraint here. Soil access, adjacency, and a short walk between repeated jobs matter more.

Your first mandatory construction target is the Cryosleep Chamber, shown in launch guides at 50 Metals and 65 Rapidium. Building it is not permission to sleep immediately. Use the remaining safe days to establish Metal and Rapidium extraction, add Organics when practical, and build the Sample Analysis Module after the Oasis sample objective opens. Run the first Electric Algae analysis, then push the story technologies that create the first durable surface loop:
- Research Phased Rapidium and assemble an Extractor, Phaser, pipeline, and dedicated tank.
- Extract from the Oasis, process the stream at a geyser, and verify that the Phased Rapidium tank is actually filling.
- Research the first Terraformer and place it at the marked Rocky Valley site.
- Prepare Radiation Filters and Repair Kits before the magnetic-storm window instead of reacting after modules start failing.
- On the final evening, store any surface structure the cryosleep warning names, then confirm the 50-Organics-per-person reserve.
Use Uphold for a small floor of Repair Kits and Radiation Filters. It is safer than filling storage with speculative tools because crafted items and raw resources do not return their materials when destroyed. Quick Crafting later permits a few emergency field items, including batteries and drill supplies, but it costs more than making them at the Workshop. A planned expedition should still leave with its tools.
Cycle 2: turn one specialist into the next Qubit tier
Reinstall any Outpost, Phaser, or pipe section the game required you to store, then inspect Rocky Valley rather than repeating the old map circuit. Terraforming has changed the route. Root-covered barriers now point to the Roots Blockades Drilling research gate; ordinary exploration and a pocket full of Drill Cartridges cannot bypass that technology requirement. Research the reinforcement, craft enough charges for the marked route, and combine each opened passage with sample and resource collection.
The main handoff is the first Field Lab. Research its theory after JanBot and the Laboratory expose it, craft the unit, and carry it to the marked high site near the Metal route in Rocky Valley. Do not send the first available Alter immediately. Before the last day:
- finish any personal task currently attached to that Alter;
- use his research bonus on technologies that would otherwise spill into the next cycle;
- move his production job to Jan or another specialist;
- keep 20 Rapidium available if you intend to branch a replacement;
- check that the Field Lab accepts him and that the cryosleep screen counts only the Jans still underground.
The assignment increases the campaign’s Qubit level and opens the next stage of the Quantum Computer. The empty-looking slot after the handoff is not evidence that the system lost an Alter: the Field Lab scientist has left the base roster, while the higher Qubit tier makes later branching possible. Visit the occupied lab after waking. The data and conversation there, not merely the passage of time, unlock the next substance step.

If the Physicist’s personal story has reached the point where he leaves, search the narrow Rocky Valley route near the Metal Outpost and the path toward the Terraformer. Carry several Suit Batteries because anomalies fill the approach, and have an Infirmary ready before bringing him back. Finding him is only the recovery checkpoint; he cannot resume full production immediately.
Cycle 3: split Phased Rapidium before chasing upgrades
The first Field Lab data opens Proxilium production. The important idea is not a single pipe drawing; it is that one processed stream must feed two destinations. Start with a temporary line if necessary: extract Minerals in Remains Hollow, send them to one Mixer input, temporarily divert Phased Rapidium to the other input, and store the first Proxilium batch. That initial production unlocks the Splitter research that makes the network sustainable.
After building the Splitter, place it after a Phaser or use two Phaser branches if the terrain makes that cleaner. The stable result is the same:
- Oasis Rapidium reaches processing without an unpowered break in the pylon or pipeline route.
- One Phased Rapidium output continues into its own tank.
- A second Phased Rapidium output enters the Mixer with the Mineral stream.
- The Mixer’s output reaches the Proxilium tank.
Watch the storage numbers for a full work interval before spending the output. If Phased Rapidium rises while Proxilium stays at zero, inspect the Mineral extractor and the two Mixer inputs. If Proxilium rises but the Phased tank drains, the Splitter is downstream of the wrong device or one branch has no active route. Moving a connection is cheaper than constructing a duplicate production chain.
With both substances stable, research the Tier II Terraformer and open Misty Gorge. Terraforming is the access gate for its elevated Field Lab site, so do not craft the lab first and then search an unchanged cliff for a path that does not exist. Use the new region to collect the samples required by the upgraded Sample Analysis Module, place the second lab, and repeat the late-cycle assignment audit.
Collect samples when the terrain changes
The Sample Analysis Module is easy to postpone because many experiments advertise bonuses rather than immediate construction. The story still requires particular analyses and hardware upgrades. The efficient rule is to sweep a region once after terraforming, not to revisit it for every new experiment. Check pools for Electric Algae, caves and ledges for Obsidian Crystals or Old Technology Debris, and the new growth areas for Mushrooms or Polymer Gas. Deposit the set, then let the experiment screen tell you what is still missing.
Cycle-specific landmarks matter more than a universal collectible count:
- Rocky Valley and the base approaches supply the first algae and early technology debris while teaching the root-barrier route.
- Narrow Cliff and Misty Gorge add Polymer Gas, algae, and debris for Magnetometer-era experiments.
- Volcano and Remains Hollow expose Obsidian, Mushrooms, gas, and the material stream needed by the late substance chain.
- Waterfall and Far Hill open only after high-tier terraforming and contain the final sample sweep plus the third Field Lab route.
You do not need every optional sample to reach the ending. Prioritize the analyses named by the current main objective, then use surplus pieces on bonuses that fix a real weakness: faster radiation recovery, stronger filters, better extraction, or cheaper surface structures. An experiment that saves future filters can be worth more than an unrelated economy upgrade when the next region is full of radiation waves.
Give every specialist a final base day
The Geologist, Physicist, Chemist, and Biologist are both production tools and characters with delayed tasks. A Field Lab removes the current version from the base, while story events may temporarily disable another. Sending a specialist away as soon as the lab appears can therefore erase two useful workers from the same shift.

Before each assignment, open the portrait list and look for a conversation icon, reduced work schedule, untreated condition, or active task. Run the relevant interaction before sleep. The launch route supports flexible dialogue in most scenes; the final JanBot conversation is the only branch that directly selects an ending. Do not turn every earlier response into a save-reload exercise.
A practical staffing pattern changes with the cycle:
- Keep Geologist while heavy Metal bills, Phased Rapidium research, and terrain work dominate.
- Keep Physicist during Splitter, Workshop, analysis-upgrade, and base-repair bursts.
- Keep Chemist when the refinery, food queue, and substance production all compete for labor.
- Keep Biologist through Greenhouse pressure, radiation recovery, and any medical bottleneck.
Then send the person whose remaining underground bonus is easiest to cover. Once assigned, visit the Field Lab at the beginning of later cycles and after major research updates. A lab that exists on the map but has not been checked can leave the campaign waiting for a conversation rather than a material.
Late cycles: keep three substance outputs alive
Data from the first two Field Labs opens Megafluid and the last terraforming tier. This is where copying an early two-product layout stops working. The final network must preserve Phased Rapidium and Proxilium while also feeding the Megafluid chain. Build a reserve of Metals, Minerals, Organics, pipeline sections, and tank space before moving the original network.
Trace the system from source to storage:
- Split the raw Oasis Rapidium into enough branches to support multiple Phasers and Mixers.
- Keep one processed branch filling the Phased Rapidium tank.
- Keep another Phased branch mixing with the established Mineral stream for Proxilium.
- Feed the late Mixer chain with the three inputs shown by the current UI: raw Rapidium, Phased Rapidium, and the Volcano deposit output.
- Confirm that all three storage totals rise; an animated Extractor does not prove that the final Mixer is receiving every input.
Megafluid unlocks Tier III Terraformers for Waterfall and Far Hill. Place both, then explore the altered routes before the next sleep. Far Hill’s upper section leads to the third Field Lab only after terraforming. Waterfall also provides the indirect route to the pink suitcase visible from Far Hill; if the object looks close but no climb reaches it, approach through the lower Waterfall passage instead of trying to force the Far Hill wall.
Near the end, the launch-version objective asks for a large one-time reserve. The readable route agrees on Resistor Blocks using 300 Phased Rapidium, 200 Proxilium, and 100 Megafluid, followed by final alternator research that may ask for another 100 of each substance. Add tank capacity before this step and pause optional substance spending. One current research table calls the final device a ZPE Generator component while full walkthrough sources use ENC Generator; follow the label and costs displayed by your client rather than treating either community name as permanent.
Match a stall to the missing state
| What looks blocked | Likely missing state | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| The next Alter slot does not appear | A Field Lab handoff or Qubit increase has not completed | Place the lab at its marked site, assign an Alter without an active task, enter cryosleep, then visit him after waking. |
| A root wall ignores Drill Cartridges | Roots Blockades Drilling is not researched | Advance through the first terraforming handoff, unlock the reinforced drill technology, and return with fresh charges. |
| The Field Lab will not accept a specialist | The Alter is occupied by a personal task or another permanent post | Finish his current chain and choose an Alter who has not already been sent away. |
| Phased Rapidium works but Proxilium does not | The Mixer lacks Minerals or the second Phased branch | Inspect both inputs, the Splitter output, and the Proxilium tank connection in that order. |
| Megafluid remains at zero | One of three substance inputs stops before the final Mixer | Trace raw Rapidium, Phased Rapidium, and the Volcano material separately instead of rebuilding every device. |
| The Physicist has vanished | His personal quest moved him to Rocky Valley | Search the narrow Metal Outpost-to-Terraformer route with spare batteries, then recover him to an existing Infirmary. |
| A module will not fit underground | The soil tier or grid arrangement is wrong | Research the next Base Expansion, use the holding area, and move or refund undamaged modules; the Airlock stays fixed. |
| Cryosleep risks a crew loss | The Organics reserve covers too few base occupants | Count only the Jans sleeping underground and reserve 50 Organics for each before confirming. |
| The final objective cannot hold enough Phased Rapidium | Storage capacity, not production speed, is the bottleneck | Add a dedicated tank and stop optional Phased spending until the large block requirement is secured. |
When a technology is visible but locked, read its prerequisite line and ask which of the three handoffs is missing: changed terrain, Field Lab data, or a working substance input. When a quest has no new map marker, check the Laboratory board, Communications Terminal, specialist portraits, and occupied Field Labs before passing another day. Most apparent dead ends are uncollected state, not a requirement to restart the cycle.
Save once before the only ending fork
Ending spoilers begin here. Complete the late generator requirements, install the finished device at the marked Rocky Valley story site, and return underground when the environment changes. Inspect the Scientist’s Laboratory board, speak to JanBot, and use the Command Center to add the newly available elevator section. Finish any remaining specialist conversations before descending.
The final JanBot exchange offers two explicit choices:
- Create a Successor continues the research through another version of Jan.
- Break the Cycle ends the succession plan and closes Scientist Jan’s pursuit.
Neither option is identified by 11 bit studios as the single correct ending. The game creates a late autosave close to the conversation, and the launch walkthrough evidence supports reloading it to view the other result without replaying every planetary cycle. Keep a manual save as well if your platform allows it. The meaningful cleanup happens before the choice: complete the personal conversations you care about, confirm the last Field Lab check-ins, and then use the two ending labels exactly as they appear in the current client.
