The first giant door in the Mire is not one puzzle. It is a three-way junction: green sparks on the left open an optional Twilight Garden trial, stairs on the lower right lead to the missing door piece, and the stone door in the center stays inert until both side flames and that piece are ready. If you keep testing the center slab, you are working on the wrong branch.
This Moss: The Forgotten Relic Book 1 walkthrough leads Quill from the opening clearing to the Cavern River camp beyond that door. It covers the water wheel, the first Reader-controlled enemies, the opening Twilight Garden test, the key dungeon, and the three-pull exit arena. It is not presented as a full Book 1 route: the launch walkthrough hub available on July 18, 2026 still stops at this camp.

Launch version: Steam AppID 3914860 identifies the July 16, 2026 release by Polyarc and Blackbird Interactive, published by Polyarc. This flat-screen edition places the original adventure, its sequel, and Twilight Garden in one package, with a guided camera, controller and mouse-and-keyboard support, and an optional Skip Combat action. The route below avoids button names so it remains useful across platforms; follow the prompt shown by the current client.
Read the room before moving Quill
Most early obstacles have two layers. Quill jumps, cuts branches, stands on floor plates, pulls ordinary levers, and fights. The Reader moves larger highlighted objects, holds mechanisms, raises paths, heals Quill, and later takes control of one Arcane enemy. When a jump looks impossible, the missing action is often on the Reader layer rather than another run at the ledge.
Use a short room audit whenever progress stalls:
- Trace Quill’s reachable floor, stairs, climb marks, and breakable branches.
- Sweep the Reader cursor across blocks, statues, doors, platforms, wheels, and enemies for an interaction highlight.
- Check whether a floor plate changes shutters, a lift, or the height of a different structure.
- Move the mechanism into its useful state before committing Quill to the jump.
The camera is guided rather than freely rotated, so screen-left, screen-right, foreground, and background are more reliable than compass language. If a transition changes the view, stop and rebuild that map before following the next direction.
Leave the village with five scroll checks banked
Turn the opening storybook pages, then follow the clearing path until Quill finds the glass and the Reader enters the scene. The first blue block is the tutorial’s real lesson: pull it out to create a crossing, then reposition the next block twice – first as a safe drop and then as the step to the upper route. The first documented scroll is just beyond that climb.
At the closed village gate, use the Reader to pull it open, but climb the rock outside before entering. That upper ledge holds the second documented scroll. Inside the village, the bridge mechanism is attached to the water wheel. Slow the wheel, enter when its floored section rotates into place, drop to the left, and climb to the upper side. Wait for the wooden planks to form the crossing to the lever, then lower the bridge and enter Quill’s house.
After Argus leaves and the Wisp wakes Quill, collect the third scroll upstairs beside the bed. Follow the Wisp to the next shut door, open it with the Reader, and walk left before passing through for the fourth scroll. The branch-and-box room that follows needs space, not speed: clear the thorny obstruction, pull the first block away from the passage, shift the second block to the right, then pull both outward from the upper side to expose the pink portal.
At the lake, raise the submerged platforms one at a time so Quill always has a landing. When you reach the broken bridge, cut the branch at its start and take the concealed opening for the fifth scroll. The remaining platforming leads to the dock and the plank that carries Quill into the Mire.

The rusted sword bridge breaks as part of the route. Hold the displayed Reader prompt to heal Quill, then continue to the gate with a movable statue above it. Shift that statue to the right to release the gate. Beyond it, cut the pink obstruction, climb, cross the bridge, and clear the arena. The following altar scene introduces Vada and the Sprites and establishes the next objective: cross the Mire while Argus is being held at the castle.
Build the first Mire mechanism in three states
After the Sprite scene, climb to the shut door and move its statue onto the square on the right. Pull the door open. A scroll sits down to the right of the following doorway; take that detour before continuing.
The next mechanism has a branch-covered statue, a movable box, and a floor plate above:
- Cross the gap and cut the branch away from the statue.
- Pull the nearby box toward the Reader so the stairs behind it become usable.
- Climb to the floor plate. Standing there lowers the statue’s platform.
- While the platform is down, move the statue into the gate-opening position.
Clear the enemies in the next space, then place Quill on the floor plate toward the foreground. It exposes a handle for the spiral staircase. Raise the handle and rotate the stair until its far end meets the route on the right. Before leaving, take the visible scroll on the upper/background side of the room.
Use Arcane enemies as weights before targets
In the next section, climb toward the locked gate, pull out the box, and reach the lever. Activating it brings in an Arcane and teaches the new glass action: the Reader can hold and move one enemy at a time. Do not destroy the only unit that can press the nearby plate. Pull the box back inside, park the Arcane on the floor button, and pass through the opened gate. From the lever level, cross left before dropping to reach another documented scroll.
The two-button lift is solved in two passes. First, control one enemy onto a plate while Quill stands on the other. Trigger the mechanism only long enough to lower the structure on the right, then climb it and use the lever on the upper-left route. That lever creates a connection between the two enemy positions. Put an enemy on each plate; the paired structures will now cycle in opposite directions. Quill can time the climb while they move.

The rotating chamber after the stairs uses the same idea but changes which floor is open. Move the enemy to the nearer plate to remove the lower shutters, rotate the chamber until its lower entrances connect, and send Quill through. Then move the enemy to the right-side plate so the upper shutters open. Quill can jump through the exposed window, climb to the third plate, and pull the window section down as a platform. Rotate the chamber toward the right-hand exit only after Quill is standing where that final alignment can be used.
Split the giant-door room into green, lower, and center routes
The next room is easier if you refuse to treat all three exits as equal:
- Green sparks on the left: the first Twilight Garden portal. It is optional for immediate story progress, but its trial gives the reveal piece needed for hidden platforms inside that garden.
- Stairs down on the right: the required dungeon branch containing the missing piece for the giant door.
- Door in the center: the return point. It opens only after the lower route is complete and the two side statues are lit.
Green sparks: take the first Twilight Garden reward
Touch the green sparks to form the portal. In the garden, face the lake and raise the submerged platforms to cross. The toad opens a root door into the trial. Inside, strike three devices: one immediately on the left, one at the far right below the door, and the easy-to-miss third device underneath the floating platform. With all three active, the root barrier withdraws.
Continue right through the next room before trying to solve its statue layout. The chest at the end contains a Sprite piece that reveals hidden platforms wherever floating rocks mark their position. Use those new platforms to return to the main puzzle and reach the lever on the right; it releases the first statue.
Keep Quill close enough for the concealed route to remain visible while moving that statue toward the foreground/south side. Stand Quill on the center plate to lower the transfer platform, then carry the statue along the opened lower route to its end position. For the second statue, leave this room toward the previous chamber. The new hidden platforms now reach the upper-right doorway and the lever beyond it. Release the second statue, repeat the center-plate transfer, and place it at the other endpoint. The middle door opens when both statue states are correct. Pass through to finish this first test, then return through the portal.
Lower right: make the ranged Arcane build the key route
Back in the giant-door room, descend through the lower-right entrance. The first chamber uses two moving pillars as cover and crossings while three fireball enemies attack. Remove all three to unlock the next room; none is needed for a plate after this encounter.
The central dungeon mechanism contains three shuttered targets and a rotating platform. Turn the platform toward the right-hand stairs and activate the lever to summon a ranged Arcane. Control it into the firing position while Quill holds the floor plate, then aim its shot at each of the three devices. The completed set raises the platform’s end high enough to reach the upper floor.
Rotate left first and go through that door to open the shortcut back to the giant-door room. This prevents the key pickup from turning into a full retrace. Return to the mechanism, rotate right, and step on the far-right floor button. Pull up the newly exposed spiral-stair handle, aim the staircase at the device on the left, and strike it once to lower the blocking rocks.
Follow the uncovered doorway to the lever on the left. It retracts the bars for a return route and also provides another ranged enemy. Before making it shoot, set the platform on the right at a height Quill can board. Fire at the device to lift that platform, cross to the small chamber, and open the chest for the missing giant-door piece.
Center: light, insert, then pull
Use the shortcut to return to the three-way room. Activate the statues on both sides so their flames are visibly lit. Insert the recovered piece in the central socket only after those two states are complete, then use the Reader to pull the giant door open. If the socket accepts the piece but nothing moves, recheck the two side flames rather than repeating the dungeon.
The exit opens on the third chain pull
In the chamber beyond the door, climb from the right and take the stairs to the upper floor plate. Standing on it releases the chain. Pull the chain toward the Reader to advance the exit and start the combat group.
Clearing that group is only one cycle. Climb back to the same plate, release the chain again, and pull it again. Repeat until the chain has been pulled three times in total, clearing the enemies that arrive between pulls. The door remains a progress meter for the encounter; if it is still closed after a fight, the next action is above you, not hidden among the arena props. Players using the launch build’s Skip Combat option can bypass the fighting without changing the puzzle order.
The open route reaches the Cavern River and another waiting plank. Continue until Quill makes camp. The Wisp arrives and reveals its horned, winged form before the pair settle for the night. That camp is the evidence-backed endpoint for this launch guide. It does not establish the later Book 1 chapters, Sarffog route, castle, all scroll locations, or Book 1 completion.
If your save shows Quill resting beside the transformed Wisp, the opening route is aligned: the first Twilight Garden test is complete, the giant-door key branch is closed, and the three chain cycles are behind you. Continue from the live objective rather than treating an unfinished launch hub as proof of the remaining route.

Game identity, Steam AppID 3914860, Polyarc and Blackbird Interactive developer credits, Polyarc publishing credit, the July 16, 2026 release, combined Book I/Book II/Twilight Garden scope, Skip Combat option, and the three original 1920-by-1080 JPG images were verified against the official Moss: The Forgotten Relic Steam page and the official Moss site. Opening order, Reader puzzle states, documented scroll detours, the first Twilight Garden trial, giant-door branches, and the Cavern River stopping point were reconciled across readable launch walkthrough references. The supplied hub was still a work in progress, broad community-wiki pages contained unsupported or conflicting completion claims, and the full-game video index was not used as written route evidence.
