Forest Escape: Last Train Guide: Six Keys, Cannon Carriage, and Warden

A giant hand stopping the locomotive in Forest Escape Last Train

Six Warden Keys open the final tunnel, but they do not make the train ready for what is inside. The escape route also needs the Cannon Carriage from The Depot, Coal that has not been spent on careless cannon shots, Rock for ammunition, a Pickaxe for the platform puzzles, and enough recovery supplies to leave the controls without losing the run.

This Forest Escape: Last Train guide treats those requirements as one route. It starts with the randomized station, ranks the named locations by solo risk, gives compact solutions for the stops supported by readable walkthrough evidence, and carries the train through The Depot and the Warden fight. It is not labeled a room-by-room solution for all 13 advertised locations: two locations in one input walkthrough were still blank, and the three starting stations can change the order in which branches appear.

Early Access boundary: checked July 18, 2026 on Steam AppID 4090360. Frag Lab, LLC released the Windows Early Access build on July 10, with Two Cakes Studio and Frag Lab listed as publishers. The official feed had reached version 0.50 when this route was prepared. Puzzle feedback, checkpoints, networking, inventory restoration, and balance are still changing, so the objective page and prompts in the current client take priority over a launch-week number.

Keep three kinds of progress separate

The train carries three progress tracks that can look finished at different times:

  1. Gate progress: six global Warden Key slots must be filled on the objective page.
  2. Hardware progress: the starting locomotive needs its missing parts, then The Depot must add the Cannon Carriage before the boss route.
  3. Run health: Coal moves the train and later feeds the cannon; Rock is both a field weapon and cannon ammunition; healing, revives, and repair tools protect the attempt.

Do not confuse the four colored keys inside Trippy Grid with four global Warden Keys. Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow open that maze’s reward. Completing the location can then advance the separate Warden Key display.

After every named mission, wait for the completion message, open the final reward, inspect the floor around the chest, and return to the train. Confirm the key display before deciding that the stop counted. That check is more reliable than remembering which color appeared in which branch, especially after a checkpoint reload.

Let the starting station set the first route

The Early Access launch has three starting points. Their buildings and early branches differ, so a coordinate list from another run can send you away from a required part. Search the station as a closed area before treating the railway as open:

  • Walk both sides of the locomotive and the station building.
  • Enter every accessible room and check nearby side structures.
  • Look above ground level for balloons or raised pickups; Rock can reach targets that a jump cannot.
  • Attach all three required components: the Control Lever, Horn, and Front Light.
  • Mine Coal and Rock until the live opening objective is met, then keep a travel reserve instead of loading or throwing everything.

A practical way to avoid a premature departure is to leave the Control Lever off until the station sweep is complete. Once it is installed, check the furnace, release the brake, select a direction, and move only after everybody knows which side of the train is the return side.

For solo play, Easy is a useful learning setting rather than a failed run. Move the locomotive close to each search area, work in short loops, and carry the recovery item on the character who leaves the train. In co-op, designate one Engineer even if the whole group wants to explore. That player owns the fuel check, brake, direction lever, horn, and retreat call.

Choose the next stop by failure cost

The railway does not need one universal left-to-right route. It needs six successful key rewards without spending the supplies required by The Depot and the Warden. Use the next visible stop, its likely failure cost, and the state of the train to choose.

Stop Why it fits here Leave it for later when…
Carousel, Music Rails, Bootball Court Short rules and a clear completion event make them good early checks. Enemies are already pressuring the train or the crew has not regrouped.
Tower, Upper Village Longer movement or search work, but no second player is built into the core solution. Health is low, the train is distant, or the route back is unclear.
Trippy Grid, Iris Lake Both can yield key progress, but sound, pursuit, and carrying tasks punish a solo mistake. A solo runner lacks healing or a revive, or a co-op team has not assigned roles.
Stepfall Bridge, Acid Pit Platform reading and hazardous floors are manageable with a close checkpoint and a deliberate route. A fall or down would strand the only recovery items far from the locomotive.
The Depot Mandatory hardware for the final route; it converts the locomotive into the boss platform. The train cannot reverse safely, needs repairs, or has no Coal and Rock reserve.

Easy does not mean free. Even a short location can become expensive if every player abandons the train, a Mimic appears on the return, or a stopper hand catches the locomotive while the crew is inside a building.

Turn each location into a completion check

Carousel: read the pose, then watch the lights

Inspect the symbols on the carousel horses and compare each body silhouette with the available dance emotes. Stand close, perform the matching pose, and let the animation run long enough to register. The central lights show accepted dances. If nothing changes, adjust your position and compare the arms, legs, and body lean again rather than cycling through emote names at random. The betting wheel is optional and should not consume survival Gold before the main reward opens.

Music Rails: replay the sound instead of memorizing a web code

One house contains the device that plays the melody; the other side has five chimes. Number the chimes from left to right, listen again, and reproduce the notes. A launch guide records one fixed sequence, while another describes the answer as the melody played in the current location. In Early Access, the safe method is to solve the audio shown by your client. Clear nearby threats before entering the notes so an interrupted interaction does not look like a wrong solution.

Bootball Court: finish the displayed score

Entering the court starts the match. Move through the hovering ball to push it past the moving goalkeeper and into the blue goal. Launch references show a five-goal objective; follow the live counter if a patch changes it. The clown opponent belongs to the mini-game and does not need to become a separate combat problem. Wait for the mission confirmation before opening the chest.

Trippy Grid: use the upper route as reconnaissance

The lower maze has Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow sections, each holding one local key. Climb to the floating bridge first and use the height to identify the quadrant, a safe drop, and a return line. In the maze, listen for the mechanical key cue and use thrown Rock to distract or briefly stagger a clown. The clowns are not a permanent kill objective, so spending the whole Rock supply trying to clear the maze is a trap.

Return all four colored keys to the exit, claim the final location reward, and then check the global Warden Key display. The four maze keys are ingredients for one location clear, not four entries on the boss gate.

Iris Lake: make six short carries

Players crossing Iris Lake beneath a giant eye in Forest Escape Last Train
Iris Lake is a carrying puzzle under observation. A short perimeter route is safer than letting the giant eye close while everyone searches separately. Official Steam screenshot.

The cave entrance has six torch holders. Use it and the nearby shop as fixed landmarks, collect one torch at a time, and return after each placement. In co-op, one Watcher keeps the giant eye in view and deals with smaller eyes while one Carrier works the perimeter. Solo, interrupt the carry frequently to face the eye and pin its position. Drop the torch beside a visible landmark when combat becomes urgent. When all six holders are filled, enter the opened cave and take the final reward.

Stepfall Bridge: navigate from below

Players crossing suspended platforms at Stepfall Bridge in Forest Escape Last Train
Stepfall punishes long instructions. Confirm one landing at a time because a small angle change can invalidate the next jump. Official Steam screenshot.

Some bridge panels slide, bounce, or disappear. With two players, keep an Observer at the lower viewing angle and a Runner above. Call one board at a time and stop after each landing. Solo, scout from below and store a tiny sequence – two landings is enough – using supports, corners, and broken edges as references. If a fall sends you to the lower rocks, take the exit route instead of forcing another jump while damaged.

Tower: descend through the stone head

Climb the exterior platforms while accounting for spiked floors and fans. At the roof, test the breakable panels until one opens the route inside. Deeper in the structure, destroy the gargoyle statues while avoiding the patrolling clown; the wall count reaches zero when that stage is done. Continue through the lower hazard section, operate the levers, and take the chest before using the exit.

Acid Pit: drain before looting

Start from the safe gaps in the damaged floor. Break blocked walls with the Pickaxe, locate the red valves behind them, and watch the acid level after each activation. Continue downward only after the current layer is safe. Opening the chest at the bottom starts the escape: the acid rises again, so leave optional corners alone and climb the known route immediately.

Upper Village: make the houses write the code

The numbered houses are the lookup table for the chest at the entrance. Test the fireplaces, record the accepted numbers, then leave by the route you already cleared. Official Steam screenshot.

Record the number on each treehouse, enter it, and interact with the fireplace. A green flame marks a number used by the chest code; a rejected number goes dark. Keep a written sequence instead of revisiting the whole vertical route, then enter the revealed code at the entrance chest. Clowns patrol below, so solve from the treehouses and return by a cleared path.

The readable input walkthrough did not yet provide responsible solutions for Mystic Room or Black Skull. This guide does not fill those gaps from achievement names. Use the objective text and mission-complete signal in the current build if either appears on the route.

Spend Gold on the next failure point

A shop is a route decision. Buy the item that protects the next location instead of turning every visit into a weapon upgrade. Official Steam screenshot.

Gold comes from guarded ore, mission rewards, saleable trophies, loose items, and hidden chests. A nearby secret chest can announce itself with a chime; search for the dark patch on the ground and strike it with the Pickaxe. Sell trophies when a shop is available. Carrying them through another dangerous stop adds recovery work if the character dies.

Shop priorities should follow the next risk:

  • Low health before a named location: buy an Aid Kit.
  • Solo or a crew with little recovery left: add a Respawn Token before the dangerous commitment.
  • Exposed locomotive: keep Construction Hammers for the side that is actually taking damage; do not spend every hammer on an early decorative cage.
  • Stable train and spare budget: then consider a Revolver, ammunition, or Dynamite for a known problem.

Launch references disagree within their own Gold coverage about one Respawn Token price, while the displayed shop list shows a different value. Do not build a run around a web price. Read the current shop, preserve the Coal and Rock needed for travel, and buy the recovery that changes the next failure from terminal to recoverable.

Leave The Depot with a siege train

The Depot is not another optional chest stop. It supplies the Cannon Carriage required by the Warden route.

  1. Explore on foot and open the gates that block the rails.
  2. Read the junction switches before moving the locomotive.
  3. Create enough room to pass the junction and reverse cleanly.
  4. Set the switches so the back of the train aligns with the Cannon Carriage.
  5. Reverse slowly until the carriage attaches, then wait for the mission confirmation and reward.
  6. Reset the junctions for the departure path.

After attachment, inspect the train rather than assuming the visible wagon is enough. Repair its exposed side, confirm the cannon interaction, and keep the Pickaxe. A Giant Nose can pursue the moving train after The Depot and throw projectiles. The mounted cannon can intercept the urgent ones, but each shot costs 1 Coal and 2 Rock. Firing at everything turns the boss weapon into a fuel leak.

Run the Warden fight as four repeating states

Before inserting the six global keys at the southern barrier, fill the recovery gap, repair both train sections, check the Pickaxe, and reserve Coal for movement as well as cannon fire. The boss is easier to read as a state machine than as one long damage phase:

  1. Active and moving: keep the locomotive in motion and line the cannon up with the current glowing weak point.
  2. Damage window: fire only while the hit is reducing the Warden’s health. Stop when the glow closes or damage stops.
  3. Dormant platform: brake beside the next puzzle, leave the train, solve the mechanism, repair or refuel only what is urgent, and reveal the switch.
  4. Release: activate the switch during dormancy, board, and start moving before the Warden resumes.

A stopped train is not protected. If poison spreads while the Warden is active, move immediately; remaining aboard the stationary carriage still causes damage. When the locomotive refuses to move, check Coal before blaming the direction lever, because the cannon consumes the same fuel.

Platform Required read Failure to avoid
Owl Statues Rotate each small owl until its eye goes dark, break all four with the Pickaxe, then break the central owl. Striking before the selected owl’s glow has been switched off.
Whack-a-mole Strike the ordinary moles until the counter clears. Hitting a mole carrying an explosive.
Maze board Use the levers to connect the yellow point on the left with the yellow point on the right. Pulling several levers without tracing the new path after each change.
Egg and nest Use the trampoline to pass each falling egg toward the nest. Crowding the same landing point or letting the egg touch the floor.

In a four-player crew, keep an Engineer at the controls, a Gunner on the weak point, a Puzzle Runner with the Pickaxe, and a Support player on repairs, resources, and revives. With two, combine Engineer/Gunner and Puzzle Runner/Support. Solo, skip perfect repairs: force dormancy, park beside the platform, verify Coal, solve, repair only critical damage, hit the switch, and return to the controls.

Eye and Ear swarms can be cleared with handheld weapons when they reach the carriage. A cannon round spent on a minor target may be the Coal needed to escape poison or the Rock needed for the next weak point.

Separate the escape from achievement cleanup

Steam currently lists 41 achievements. The main route naturally covers the starting train, named locations, the Cannon Carriage, all six Warden Keys, and the Warden. Several other counters pull the run in the opposite direction from safe progression:

  • Ring requires eight named locations in one game, so record only confirmed mission completions.
  • Cat tale, To Hell and Back, and Long Live the King involve teammate or lobby-host revives and cannot be completed as a true solo run.
  • Rock and Coal asks one character to hoard resources that the train and cannon normally consume.
  • We Rich! rewards holding Gold, while I Fear No One requires heavy ammunition spending.
  • Monster Hunter requires every monster type in one game, which encourages extra locations after a normal escape route would already be ready.

Use a stable progression run for keys, newspapers, location clears, and the boss. Move co-op revive counters to a controlled second run near the train. Save hoarding, purchase, and all-enemy counters for cleanup attempts so a completion condition does not empty the exact resource needed by the Warden.

Verify the restored state on version 0.50

The July 18 version 0.50 notes report fixes for a team-join crash, duplicate train-part pickup trouble, incorrect train placement, disappearing resurrection graves, and puzzle hit feedback. The same announcement still lists online-service failures, unstable lobby joins, invisible teammates or enemies, empty inventory after loading a checkpoint, and occasional co-op desynchronization as known issues.

After any reload, do not drive away on memory. Reopen the inventory, verify the three train parts or Cannon Carriage, check the six-key display, confirm recent purchases and newspapers, and inspect Coal, Rock, repairs, and recovery tokens. If the restored state is older than the wipe, rebuild the missing requirement before entering another named location.
