Directive 8020 Save Everyone: Eight Survivors and the Humanitarian Ending

Directive 8020 Turning Point asking whether to help or run

The all-survivors route in Directive 8020 is decided before most of its deaths become visible. Episode 2 determines which ship system protects Mitchell in Episode 5; Carter’s escape determines whether Eisele can refuse the gun; sedating Williams supplies the proof needed at the scanner; and two trait tracks decide whether a safe launch also becomes the Humanity-first ending. Treat those links as one route, not as isolated dialogue choices.

Checked state: this guide was researched on July 19, 2026. The official Steam listing identifies the May 12, 2026 release, and the latest captured official patch note is dated June 15. That patch addressed Turning Points, save/loading faults, multiplayer state, and a PS5 Episode 5 keypad blocker. Update the client before replaying a node that appears locked or unresponsive.

The safest run is built by choosing for the later consequence, not the emotion of the current scene.

Full spoiler warning: the route below names the duplicate crew members, the Cycle 13 reveal, both post-credit outcomes, and every late rescue. “Save everyone” means the five continuing playable crew members – Stafford, Young, Eisele, Cernan, and Cooper – plus Mitchell, Anders, and Williams. Carter and Simms have unavoidable story deaths, although keeping them alive through their playable Episode 1 branches still changes later evidence.

Set three route conditions before chasing individual rescues

A clean run needs three ledgers. The first is physical survival: win stealth sections, chases, and QTEs. The second is identity evidence: preserve Carter’s message, inject Williams, sedate him later, and test suspected duplicates instead of firing on instinct. The third is the ending state: move Young toward Loyal and Eisele toward Sympathetic.

The recommended system route is the one with the fewest later dependencies:

Early state What it changes later Route used here
Episode 2 Power Games Landing Computer affects Stafford’s crash choice; Fire Control protects Mitchell during Under Pressure. Disable the Landing Computer, then restore Fire Control during Eisele’s pursuit.
Carter reaches Crew Quarters His final message remains on the Utility Strap and opens the informed gun decision. Escape Simms, then recover the strap in Episode 3.
Williams receives both injections The scanner can distinguish the real Williams from a duplicate. Pass Rude Awakening, synthesize the Episode 5 sedative, and do not shoot him.
Young Loyal; Eisele Sympathetic Young can choose Humanity First; Eisele can end the clone cycle after the credits. Use supportive, crew-first dialogue consistently rather than trying to repair both traits at the finale.

Explorer Mode permits immediate Turning Point cleanup. Survivor Mode does not give you the same mid-run safety net, so confirm each named node before crossing into the next episode.

Episode 1: preserve the warning that outlives Carter

The Oracle choice changes the path through the breach investigation but is not the central survival lock. The two results that matter later are Secured and Carter’s completed escape.

  1. During the exterior repair, pass the QTE that catches Simms when she loses her footing. This keeps her present for the longer Episode 1 branch.
  2. When the hostile Simms sequence begins, move only while her attention is elsewhere. Scan from cover, use the low routes, and reach Crew Quarters without being caught.
  3. Force Carter’s room open and finish the scene. Carter records the warning that Cooper can recover from his Utility Strap in Episode 3.

Carter and Simms still die as part of the larger story. Do not restart the whole campaign trying to contradict that scripted outcome; the practical win is carrying Carter’s evidence forward.

Episode 2 is the switchboard for Stafford, Mitchell, and Williams

At Little Faith, select Trust – the reply that dismisses Mitchell’s suspicion of Anders. Different guides paraphrase this as “dismiss Mitchell,” but the in-game choice label is Trust. This prevents Stafford from monitoring Anders later and lets her sedate Williams without the fatal interference branch.

At Power Games, cut power to the Landing Computer. This is not a promise to repair it during the crash. It deliberately leaves Fire Control as the system you can preserve for Mitchell.

During Eisele’s Pursuit sequence, stay hidden until Simms leaves the central console. Cross while Simms is moving, interact with that console, and make sure the resulting Turning Point shows Fire Control Restored before Eisele goes to the exit. If she is spotted or you skip the console, the system state can move to Stunned instead, and Mitchell’s Episode 5 rescue no longer resolves automatically.

Use Episode 2’s quieter conversations to establish the two ending traits:

  • With Young, prefer the warm, joking, or crew-loyal replies over mission-first severity.
  • With Eisele, the Accuse branch followed by Contemplate recognizes that her concern is about the crew rather than personal authority.
  • At Decompression, Plead instead of escalating the threat, then reach the vent before the air is lost.

Episodes 3 and 4: sit through the crash, recover the strap, refuse the gun

In No Games, Cernan must reach the Control Room without Williams catching him. Restore the two power feeds, remember that Williams changes his patrol after the second door receives power, and return through cover rather than following his original pattern.

The Episode 3 crash pays off the Landing Computer decision. Because this route left that system offline, choose for Stafford to sit down. Attempting an unavailable reboot strands him away from the seat and kills him. A different save in which the Landing Computer was restored can use the reboot path, but it must also pass the return-to-seat QTE; do not mix that branch with this one.

When Williams wakes, complete Rude Awakening so Cooper injects him. The reaction becomes useful biometric evidence later. During Cooper’s Mess Hall search, listen for the beeping near the damaged shutter. Lift it, squeeze through, and take Carter’s Utility Strap before using the elevator door. Missing it removes the clean, evidence-based weapon branch.

Episode 4 cannot kill a continuing crew member, but it can damage the route. Escape Williams during Overwatch, pass Young’s Drawbridge and Fight prompts, and select Refuse when Eisele is asked to authorize the firearm. If Refuse is absent, check Carter’s Episode 1 escape and the Utility Strap pickup instead of guessing at a later dialogue fix.

Several rescues offer only one prompt; prepare the route state before the hand is already slipping away.

Episode 5: make Fire Control save Mitchell while Young saves Anders

Start by clearing Eisele’s Waste Management stealth section without being caught. An injury here makes her later Close Encounter far less forgiving.

At Suspicions, help Anders sedate Williams. The chemical cabinet uses 168. Read the room references for Dimethyl Sulfate, then Chloroacetyl Chloride, then Ammonia if the keypad presentation changes. In the following conversation, the verified route uses Consider, Approve, then Question. Anders should carry out the sedation during Broadcast. If she does not, return first to Little Faith and the lab conversation rather than forcing the Point Blank scene later.

At Under Pressure, choose Save Anders. Young must open the medical door with the repair rod. Succeeding keeps Anders unharmed; a failed door sequence can still let Cooper rescue her, but it loses the clean condition for related achievements. Because Fire Control was restored in Episode 2, Mitchell survives the separate blaze automatically.

If your earlier save disabled Fire Control instead, the correct emergency choice is Save Mitchell and Cooper will cover Anders. That branch can preserve both, but it is not the state used by the rest of this guide.

At Backup, volunteer Eisele to accompany Stafford. Do not send Cernan. This keeps the scanner reunion and Eisele’s survival route aligned.

Episode 6: let evidence decide who leaves the scanner room

Stafford and Eisele must cross Close Encounter without another capture. Move toward the ladder only when the creature has committed to the opposite side. At Point Blank, choose Stand Down. The injection and sedative history identifies Williams as human; shooting him throws away the evidence chain you built across three episodes.

The scanner crisis is a verification test. Panic is the failure state, even when the target looks familiar.

When a second Eisele arrives, choose Test. On this clean route, the newcomer is the real Eisele and the Eisele already standing with the group is the duplicate. After the test, shoot the group-side Eisele – shown on the left in the verified scene layout. Use “newcomer versus group member” as the identity rule rather than relying on screen direction if a camera cut presents them differently.

At the Directive 8020 decision, choose the distress-call route: Hope / Save Our Souls. The labels vary between the dialogue prompt and the Turning Point description, but the state you want is the SOS path. Young completes that transmission in Episode 7.

Episode 7: messages identify Anders; the final fork confirms her

During Search Party, separate messages from the known Anders contact from messages sent by the unknown impostor. At the final scanner fork, go right across the rock bridge to the cave with stalactites hanging from its ceiling. That is where the real Anders waits.

Do not confuse this survival fork with the earlier left detour used for the Cracks Appear collectible. That helmet is on a separate branch before the rockfall boundary; a completion run can inspect it and return, but the identity decision still ends at the right-hand stalactite cave.

At the Charybdis pod, finish Young’s SOS transmission. Back on the ship, Young must clear Pod Room without being caught, while Cernan must survive Geoscience and The Hunt. A clean result returns the full group to Bridge Ops and preserves Anders.

Episode 8: take Williams, trust Mitchell, and pause before the escape chain

If Young’s Loyal trait is leading, Why You Started resolves into her Hero/Loyalist path. At Wish, select Our humanity is more important. This and the SOS state open the Homeward Bound route. When Williams refuses to leave, choose Order so he comes with the crew.

The rest of the episode concentrates more lethal checks than the previous chapters. Before beginning Redirect, set the QTE and accessibility options you intend to use; do not wait for the reactor chase to discover that a hold prompt is using the wrong input style.

  • Redirect: move the power cell to the exit circuit and evade the Eisele duplicate. A capture kills Stafford.
  • Atrium and Mess Hall: do not approach the crying Mitchell image. It is bait. Keep scanning, break line of sight, and finish each stealth route.
  • Shoggoth and Reactor: win the chase, Tentacle Flail, and Creeper prompts. At Snap Decision, choose Help and then pass the rescue QTE; Run abandons a crew member, while a failed rescue can kill both.
  • Knock Knock: if Mitchell survived Episode 5, choose to Trust / Save him and let him in. The earlier messages establish that this is the real Mitchell.
  • Return of the Beast: pass the container, beam, fuel-line, and door-seal checks as control moves between characters. Seal the exits before attempting the oxygen-canister attack; failing the seal can cascade through the remaining crew.
  • Grappled: land both parts of the oxygen-canister action so the SEV can clear the last creature.

Reaching the ship is not the last check: the escape must be free of both deaths and hidden impostors.

A safe launch and the Humanitarian ending are separate checks

The game can deliver a surviving crew without delivering the post-credit outcome many players call the best ending. Young’s Loyal/Hero path and Humanity First determine the crew’s late route. The final Humanitarian versus Scientist split is controlled by Eisele’s accumulated trait direction.

Keep Eisele’s Sympathetic trait ahead of Rational through crew-first replies: take her suspicions seriously, plead during Decompression, acknowledge that she was right to be concerned, refuse the firearm, volunteer her as backup, bring Williams, and help Stafford. After the credits, Humanitarian Eisele stops the clone program. A Rational-leading Eisele instead continues it in the Scientist outcome. The game does not display a universal “best” badge; this guide uses that phrase for the combination of all eight savable crew members, Homeward Bound, and the Humanitarian shutdown.

When a death appears, rewind to the dependency rather than the body

  • Stafford dies in the crash: if the Landing Computer is offline, return to Crash and sit down. If you restored it, reboot only with a clean QTE route back to the seat.
  • Mitchell dies in Under Pressure: return to Power Games and Pursuit. Fire Control must be restored before choosing Save Anders.
  • Williams dies at Point Blank: check Little Faith, the Episode 3 injection, code 168, and Anders’s Broadcast sedation.
  • Refuse is missing in Loaded Question: replay Carter’s chase, then recover his Utility Strap before leaving Episode 3 Search.
  • The wrong Eisele survives: replay the scanner, choose Test, and preserve the newcomer.
  • The crew survives but the final speech is Scientist: the repair begins with earlier Eisele trait choices, not the final escape or SOS.
