Mixtape rarely blocks progress with a hard puzzle. It blocks progress by returning you to a bedroom after a memory and quietly adding one new conversation, object, or exit. If the next chapter has not started, do not search the whole map. Recheck the room state that just changed, let the current dialogue finish, and use the next highlighted object only after the optional talk prompts are exhausted.

Route boundary: this guide covers the progress trigger in all 30 chapters without turning every scene into an achievement checklist. It was reconciled on July 19, 2026 against the current Steam release and the official June 16 v1.1 notes. Story outcomes are mentioned only when they explain where control returns or which object becomes active.
Know what the game is waiting for before you replay a chapter
The 30 chapter names make Mixtape look more segmented than it feels. Several numbered chapters are memories launched from one bedroom, and the surrounding exploration chapter resumes after each memory. Three signals tell you what to do next:
- A solid white interaction dot marks an object or person that still has a current interaction. A faded or hollow state means that interaction has already been used in the present room state.
- A newly highlighted story object starts the next memory or leaves the room. Finish nearby conversations first if you also care about optional dialogue, because starting the memory can change every prompt in the room.
- A leave prompt ends open-ended scenes such as stone skipping. It may not appear until the current conversation finishes, so waiting is sometimes the correct action.
Chapter Select becomes useful as chapters are completed. The v1.1 patch added a Play from Outro option at the bottom of the Chapter Select screen, which is the cleanest way to re-enter the transition after a short minigame. The same patch improved chapter and level skipping, but it did not replace the need to finish the active room trigger.
Official identity and build source: the official Mixtape Steam record identifies AppID 2582320, Beethoven and Dinosaur as developer, Annapurna Interactive as publisher, and May 7, 2026 as the release date. The official game site supplied the untouched 3840×2160 JPGs used on this page. Version details come from the developer’s June 16 Steam announcement.
Chapters 1-6: return to Stacey’s room after every memory
Chapter 1, Skate to Rockford’s. Stay on the downhill route and use the on-screen ollie prompt when traffic closes a lane. A collision rewinds a few seconds, so there is no need to restart the chapter after hitting a car. At the house, complete the displayed handshake sequence and follow the group into Stacey’s room.
Chapter 2, Rockford’s House, is the hub for Chapters 3-6. The glowing cassette on the desk begins the first memory, but the room will keep changing when each memory ends:
- Inspect the skateboard if the opening camera cue has not fired, then use the glowing desk cassette and complete the rewind interaction. Chapter 3, The Kiss, ends when you choose the on-screen stop response.
- Back in the bedroom, talk to both friends, check the pictures on the closet, and use the VCR on the television. The room then opens the next music memory.
- After Chapter 4, Headbanging, talk to Cassandra and Slater again. Use the photo string, collect the three loose photos from beneath the string, the book beside the bed, and the closet door, then return them to the string.
- Chapter 5 is the shopping-cart escape. Steer down the center of the road and use the paired balance controls shown on screen to correct a drift. When the scene returns to the room, speak to Slater, inspect the closet poster, speak to Cassandra, and use the box on the chair.
- After Chapter 6, Rockford’s Headphones, speak to both friends and inspect every pinned item on the road-trip board. That board closes the Stacey-room chain and sends the group toward Debbie’s room.
If the photo string or board does nothing, the usual cause is an unfinished conversation or one loose item that still shows a solid dot. Circle the room once at close range instead of repeatedly using the story object.
Chapters 7-10: Debbie’s closet needs a photo, ticket, shell, and forest route
Chapter 7, Debbie’s Bedroom. Enter the room that was closed earlier. The cabinet establishes the problem, while the photo on the green dresser starts the first memory. Speak to Slater, inspect the trophies, speak to Cassandra, and check the box beside her before moving the story forward.
Chapter 8, Ultimate Slushie. Fill both cups as the scene requests. Back in Debbie’s room, talk to Slater and Cassandra, then open the dresser drawer. Move the loose objects until the black notebook can be shifted; the ticket fragment beneath it starts the photobooth memory.
Chapter 9, Photobooth. When control returns, talk to both friends and inspect the picture on the boxes. Use the shell on the blue dresser to reveal the closet key. Talk to Cassandra and Slater until their current dialogue reaches the leave-ready line, then open the wardrobe.
Chapter 10, The Ritz Discovery. The memory route begins on the railway tracks. At the broken bridge, take the path to the left before the bridge and enter the abandoned train. Keep moving when the camera changes angle. In the open plain, jump through the visible air currents to extend each leap, cross to the far side, and reach the old cabin. The next present-day scene starts after the cabin discovery.

Chapters 11-18: Cassandra’s room is another changing hub
Chapter 11, Skate to Cassandra’s. Follow the downhill construction route. Crashing still rewinds the current section. The story continues at the lake, not at a hidden side path.
Chapter 12, Skipping Stones. Throw as many stones as you want, then wait for the conversation to finish. Use the leave prompt when it appears. The tire swing and other targets are optional for progression.
Chapter 13, Cassandra’s House. The glowing trophy in her room starts the softball memory. After it, the bedroom becomes a sequence of four launch points:
- The paper beside the bathroom mirror starts the detention memory and the toilet-paper throw.
- The photo on the table outside the bathroom starts the floating memory. Steer around solid scenery until Stacey reaches home.
- The conduct contract on the bed starts the family memory.
- The window behind Slater starts the moon conversation.
Each return can add new dialogue or a new dot. The curtain above the window and the paper behind Slater are easy to overlook because the camera naturally stays at eye level. When the room finally moves to Chapter 17, speak to Cassandra until her current lines are exhausted, then speak to Slater and accept the Mini Master.
Chapter 17, Cassandra’s Rooftop. Rotate the handheld to its back, open the battery cover, place both batteries into their matching slots, close the cover, rotate the unit face-up, and press the power button. Speed is optional for story progress; powering the device is the only required outcome.
Chapter 18: follow the power cable through Bodacious Cretaceous
The abandoned dinosaur park is the longest self-contained navigation chapter. Use this route when the dark entrance or broken ride makes the objective unclear:
- Follow the power cable on the ground to the power room and switch the park display back on.
- Return to the first large dinosaur, press its red activation button, and take the requested photo with Cassandra and Slater in frame.
- Go through the gate on the right. Repeat the red-button and photo pattern at the long-neck display, then continue to the Spinosaurus area.
- Use the nearby power panel to call the small rail cart. Ride it until the breakdown.
- Ignore the locked gate closest to the stalled cart. Turn right instead, climb onto the raised platform, and continue through the room filled with smaller dinosaur models.
- At the triceratops structure, activate the display and take the next group photo. Climb the long-neck model after the conversation prompt appears. The comet sequence returns the story to the present.
You can take extra photos anywhere the camera is active, but photography is not a route key unless the current display has just been activated. When the scene ends, Officer Morino closes the Cassandra-room section and the next skate begins.
Chapters 19-24: the cabin is a four-piece task board
Chapter 19, Skateboard Explosion. Use the two displayed trigger controls whenever an object gains a red or yellow explosive outline. Missing an optional object does not stop the story; staying on the road reaches the cabin.
Chapter 20, The Shitty Ritz. The cabin yard contains four highlighted stations. Each starts a memory and returns one piece of the stash photo:
- Paint cans to Chapter 21: move the roller to one edge, hold the paint control, and cover the door in vertical strips. Full coverage ends the memory.
- Couch to Chapter 22: control Cassandra and Slater with the two sticks. Move both ends right, align the couch with the marked rectangle, and drop it only when the placement turns valid.
- Fire pit to Chapter 23: charge broad broom swings from the center, then use short sweeps around the rim until no leaves remain inside the circle.
- Slingshot on the car to Chapter 24: clear every can and bottle from the car. Work from one side to the other so a small target is not hidden behind a larger one.
After every memory, talk to Slater and inspect the newly active spot before choosing the next station. Once all four picture pieces are assembled, enter the cabin and collect the drinks and fireworks.
Chapters 25-30: use the tape player, then keep the late route linear
Chapter 25, Slater’s House. Inspect the room before using the story object. On the stair side are the red robot, plasma orb, amp photos, green book, and guitar. Across the room are a wall picture, Slater, the wall behind him, the fish tank, and record player. The lava lamp sits beside the tape player. Use the tape player only when ready to move the scene. After the memory, speak to Slater again, inspect the Mini Master on the desk, and use the tape on the bed.

Chapter 26, Starlight Video. Walk the video store until the selection prompt is active. Take two blue tapes and one yellow tape to the clerk. Knocking over shelves and cutouts is optional for story progress.
Chapter 27, The Run. This is an auto-run. Jump obvious gaps and waist-high obstacles; slide under low openings. A failed input rewinds the run, so keep reading the next silhouette instead of steering.
Chapter 28, Coastal Cruise. Use the left and right firework controls when the matching lights enter view. Missing a cue only affects an optional achievement. The convoy reaches the cabin automatically.
Chapter 29, Party at the Ritz. The white boxes in Slater’s camcorder are progress markers. Walk close enough to record each marked event. Food, drinks, and high-fives are optional unless you are cleaning up achievements. After the marked crowd moments, find Camille’s new box near the party and record it to move the group to the rooftop.
Chapter 30, Finale. Follow the white trails through the sky. They lead first to Cassandra’s stop and then back toward Stacey’s home. The credits follow the final handoff; the story-completion achievement appears after them.
If the next prompt still does not appear
- Let the current voice line end before activating another object. Starting a second interaction too early can make it unclear which dot actually changed.
- Talk to both friends again after every bedroom memory. A new line can be the only state change between two chapters.
- Scan above eye level in Cassandra’s room and behind the current character position. The window curtain, wall paper, and hallway door are common blind spots.
- In Debbie’s room, move the black notebook before looking for the ticket, then use the shell before trying the wardrobe.
- At the cabin, finish the active minigame and collect its picture piece before starting another station.
- In Chapter Select on v1.1, use Play from Outro when the missing state is after a minigame. If a room chain still fails, replay that room from its first chapter and complete every return-state conversation in order.
Progress steps were checked against two independent walkthrough sets that both cover the chapters in order, then narrowed with several scene-specific references. Pages that remained a verification shell, age gate, thin link post, or conflicting secondary summary were not used to invent route details. No third-party image or unverified video appears in this article.
