Hell Maiden‘s unlock chain is not simply “beat Limbo, then enter Lust.” Virgil is tied to run count, Horace and Homer are consecutive timed rescues, Lust needs both rescues plus a Minos win, and Ovid appears only after the two Lust bosses have been encountered. A strong clear can still leave the altar unchanged when one of those triggers has not happened.
This route separates every trigger from its proof. It starts with a fresh Early Access save, reaches all four current Poets, opens the three Boss Spirit Card pools, then reuses those unlocks for card and low-healing achievement attempts. It does not assume that surviving a Circle, defeating its boss and rescuing a Poet are the same checkpoint.
Build checkpoint: July 22, 2026, EA 1.0 v0.2.34. The live release currently contains Limbo and Lust, four Poets to unlock, four signature weapons and 72 Steam achievements. AstralShift has already issued four hot fixes, and the studio has identified Lust difficulty and hit boxes as near-term work, so balance advice here is deliberately framed as a decision method rather than a permanent ranking.
The route is gated by six different proofs
Keep this ledger beside the altar. The “proof” column matters more than how good the last run felt: it tells you whether the game recorded the exact state needed for the next step.
| Progress step | Required trigger | Proof before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Virgil | Finish the second Limbo run | Wayfinder is selectable at the Forum altar |
| Horace | After run two, clear Horace’s 03:30 Limbo quest | Talk to Horace in the Forum; Carpe Diem appears at the altar |
| Homer | After Horace is rescued, clear Homer’s 03:30 Limbo quest | Talk to Homer in the Forum; Winged Lyric appears at the altar |
| Lust | Save Horace and Homer, and defeat Minos once | Circle 2 is selectable; Winds of Desire can confirm the unlock |
| Ovid | Encounter Libicocco and Scarmiglione, then clear Ovid’s quest on a later Lust run | Talk to Ovid in the Forum; Codex Amoris appears at the altar |
| Taboo Arts | Defeat Minos three times, and defeat the two Lust bosses three times | Taboo Arts I and Taboo Arts II unlock; Boss Spirit Cards can enter later runs |
Steam’s achievement wording exposes an easy diagnostic distinction. Conqueror of Limbo and Conqueror of Lust only require surviving each Circle’s 12-minute stage. Boss defeats have separate achievements. Reaching 12:00 proves that the survival phase ended; it does not prove Minos, Scarmiglione or Libicocco was defeated.
Runs one and two are setup; the next success is timed
Use the first two Limbo attempts to establish movement, card reading and a reliable way to reach the boss transition. The official progression guide says Virgil unlocks automatically after the second run; it does not add a victory requirement. After that second return to the Forum, inspect the central altar. Wayfinder is the detector. If it is selectable, the unlock exists even if a character scene or achievement notification was easy to miss.
Do not look for Horace before that same two-run gate. Once the gate is open, her rescue objective appears at 03:30 in Limbo. The useful goal for this attempt is therefore not merely “survive twelve minutes.” At 03:30, break from the farming loop, identify the quest state and finish it successfully. If the rescue fails, the rest of the run can still earn resources or boss practice, but it cannot be counted as Horace progress.
After a successful rescue, return to the Forum and talk to Horace. Then check for Carpe Diem at the altar. Those are two separate checks: clearing an objective creates the rescued state, while the Forum interaction exposes the new ally and weapon to the player. Do not begin a Homer search until both checks are complete.
Horace is the key that makes Homer visible
Homer’s quest is another 03:30 Limbo event, but it only becomes available after Horace has been rescued. That dependency makes repeated blind Limbo runs wasteful: if Horace is not complete, no amount of waiting at 03:30 can turn the next objective into Homer’s rescue.
On the first eligible run, plan the opening around reaching 03:30 with room to react. Early damage is useful only if the build can still move to the quest and hold its position or target safely. A fragile screen-clearing setup that collapses when the objective appears is worse for progression than a less spectacular hand with reliable coverage. Complete Homer’s objective. Back in the Forum, finish her new conversation, then verify Winged Lyric at the altar.
Lust has one more compound gate: Horace saved, Homer saved and Minos defeated at least once. These facts do not need to occur in the same run. If Minos was already beaten while setting up the rescues, finishing Homer may immediately complete the gate. If Circle 2 remains locked, check the three proofs separately instead of repeating whichever Limbo task you remember most clearly.
Read Weapon offers as fixed checkpoints, not a slot machine
A current card-collection guide places Weapon Card selections at levels 4, 12 and 18. The four-card hand includes the Signature Weapon, and every weapon can carry three Mod Cards. That gives each run a useful shape: level 4 establishes the second attack, level 12 decides whether the hand covers its remaining weakness, and level 18 completes the weapon plan. Mod choices between those checkpoints should strengthen the hand you can actually finish, not an imagined perfect roll.

Before spending a reroll, read the character beside the offer:
- General/Dante alignment: the offer draws from Dante’s available pool and any Boss cards already unlocked.
- Poet alignment: the offer remains attached to that Poet. Rerolling does not change the alignment, so it cannot solve a wrong-pool problem.
- Already holding a weapon from that Poet: a remaining Weapon slot may be filled from the general pool. That general option can change, even though the Poet alignment itself does not.
This is why a reroll that repeats familiar cards is not automatically broken. First ask whether the screen is showing the family you need. If it is the wrong family, preserve the reroll for a later Mod offer or a useful general slot. If it is the right family, reroll only when another member of that pool would materially complete the hand.
Use duplicate Mods with equal levels to merge toward level 3, and rearrange the hand before accepting the next card when a Spread effect depends on position. Do not chase a merge at the cost of leaving a major attack without coverage. A full hand is a specific achievement checkpoint; a functional hand is what gets the rescue and boss clear that expands future card pools.
One Lust encounter starts Ovid’s chain
Once Lust opens, the next important trigger is an encounter, not a win. The developer guide says Ovid becomes eligible after the player has fought Libicocco and Scarmiglione once. Defeating them is not required for this trigger. If the first Lust attempt reaches both encounters and then fails, do not treat the run as empty progress.
Ovid’s quest becomes available on the next Lust run. Clear it, return to the Forum and talk to her before checking the altar for Codex Amoris. This sequence is especially important on builds around v0.2.34: Hot Fix 4 repaired an Ovid rescue-scene failure triggered when defeat occurred just before the scene. On the current client, a missing scene after an otherwise valid clear is a reason to verify version and repeat the exact quest-to-Forum handoff, not a reason to invent another unlock condition.

Three separate wins open the Boss card pools
A first boss victory advances the route; a third victory changes the card pool. Minos’ Taboo Arts require three separate Minos defeats. Libicocco’s and Scarmiglione’s Taboo Arts require three separate defeats of the Lust pair. Steam’s Taboo Arts I and Taboo Arts II descriptions match those developer-guide conditions.
Record boss wins separately from 12-minute survival and Poet rescues. A compact ledger prevents two common mistakes:
- counting a boss encounter as a defeat because it was enough to trigger Ovid;
- spending card rerolls on a Boss card that has not entered the pool yet.
For the Soul of Poet and Essence of Poet card achievements, the official descriptions only say to equip all of a Poet’s Weapon or Mod Cards; they do not explain the offer algorithm. The community card guide reports that Dante’s completion can depend on unlocked Limbo and Lust Boss cards. Treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed hidden rule: finish both Taboo Arts achievements first, then use general-aligned offers to test the expanded pool. This separates a locked card from simple run-to-run variance.
Low-healing clears belong after Horace is unlocked
Vital Endurance I and Vital Endurance II ask for a Circle clear without healing more than 500 HP. The condition measures healing, not remaining health, so taking extra damage and recovering it is the dangerous loop. Because the official page exposes no in-run healing counter, the safest detector is a deliberately low-healing build rather than trying to finish at an estimated 499.
Two independently checked community guides converge on Horace’s Carpe Diem as the practical starting weapon. Their reason is defensive, not a permanent damage ranking: its spell provides an invulnerable window, allowing the player to survive a crowded phase without adding to the healing total. Both also favor preventing contact through coverage and movement. One uses Shield of Achilles for blocking and Homer’s wind weapon for knockback; the other combines projectile coverage, spacing and a directed boss-damage option.

Convert those reports into conservative decisions:
- take maximum-health, movement or attack-size gains when they reduce the need to recover health;
- build enough projectile or area coverage that enemies do not reach the character from the unprotected side;
- save Carpe Diem’s spell for the phase that otherwise forces damage, rather than spending it on a routine wave;
- avoid automatic pickup behavior if it also draws healing items into the character;
- do not rely on Codex Amoris’ healing during this achievement attempt. One guide explicitly could not verify whether that healing counts, so the safe route is to remove the uncertainty.
If the achievement fails, change one variable on the next run: remove incidental healing first, then improve the attack side that allowed contact. Do not replace the entire hand after every failure. There is not enough current evidence for a universal “best” Vital Endurance deck, and Lust balance is already on the developer’s adjustment list.
Patch the client before diagnosing the save
EA launch bugs affected exactly the kinds of proof used in this route. Work through the current fixes before deleting progress or replaying every Circle:
- Confirm v0.2.34 or a newer build. Hot Fix 4 repaired the Ovid rescue-cutscene loss, Scarmiglione’s black-screen encounter and mouse progression in Beatrice’s third cutscene.
- Relaunch after a completed Lust boss fight. Hot Fix 3 made the missing final scene and Pilgrim’s Journey I trigger automatically for players who had already completed the fight. The later patch addressed the mouse-specific scene problem.
- Recheck previously stuck achievements. Hot Fix 2 repaired Essence of Poet IV and several other unlock failures. A current client plus a relaunch is a better first test than a new save.
- Use the altar and dialogue as local proofs. A missing toast does not erase a selectable Wayfinder, Carpe Diem, Winged Lyric or Codex Amoris. Exhaust the relevant Forum conversation and inspect the altar before repeating a rescue.
- Try the official DirectX 11 launch option for crashes. Hot Fix 3 made DX11 the default recommendation for affected players. A crash before the Forum handoff can look like a progression failure even when the trigger itself was valid.
The clean EA 1.0 stopping point is visible without guessing: four Poet signatures at the altar, both Circles selectable, the Ovid conversation complete, and both Taboo Arts achievements recorded after their separate win counts. From there, card-collection and Vital Endurance runs are targeted cleanup rather than attempts to discover a missing progression gate.
