Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Walkthrough Route and Points of No Return

An armored traveler overlooking a walled city in Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon

Do not clear Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon by chasing whichever journal marker is closest. The main route is a chain of proofs: escape with Arthur awakened, earn a path to Excalibur, rebuild the Menhir tablet, recover the Shield and Crown, then stop at the Charred Conclave until every ending requirement you care about is actually complete. Most of the apparent sprawl is optional; the dangerous mistakes happen when a regional choice is made without a manual save or when an optional objective is mistaken for the next story gate.

Carry four proofs through the whole campaign

The table is the travel spine. Do the detailed checks below before crossing to the next row; a long side-quest list is not evidence that the regional main quest has advanced.

Stage Proof that the route advanced Pause before leaving if…
Island Asylum Arthur is bound, A World to Win starts, and Caradoc’s boat becomes usable You want the Old Letter, Ninian’s Tag, or a separate save before the last Caradoc encounter
Horns of the South The repaired gong exposes the Excalibur memory, The Hollow Blade unlocks, and the Cuanacht gate is your objective You have not saved before choosing Captain Breandan or Galahad
Cuanacht Both Menhir tablet threads are resolved and the Shield of Avalon has been placed in Arthur’s realm You want Sarras, faction cleanup, or the fungal outcome in Sagremor Castle
Forlorn Swords The Crown of Ashes is placed and the Charred Conclave doorway is active You want the secret ending, all four tribes represented, unfinished tombs, or any regional cleanup

Make a named manual save at each proof. Quicksave is useful for a fight, but it is a poor substitute for a file created before a faction conversation. Patch 1.25 lets PC players rebind quick save and quick load; that convenience does not protect a decision made several quests earlier.

Leave the Asylum with the story items, not every spoon

The Great Escape is long because the prison contains combat tutorials, optional cells, two optional early bosses, crafting material, and several pieces of lore. The main exit does not require a room-by-room loot sweep. Follow Caradoc’s route, obtain a pickaxe, pass through the laboratory section, bind Arthur’s soul at the altar, learn how Soul Fragments operate Fore-Dweller mechanisms, defeat the Giant Sentinel, and reach the shore.

Three detours deserve a deliberate decision:

  • Old Letter: after leaving the starting cell, use the Guard’s Key on the nearby locked room and inspect its containers. Reading the letter starts Unforgettable, whose payoff occurs much later in Cuanacht. Current completion checklists treat the prison copy as the important pickup; take it now if achievements or long-form quest closure matter.
  • Ninian’s Tag: find the laboratory key, open Ninian’s room, resolve his request, and take the tag. It can be handed to Fearghas in the Horns and also counts toward Keeper-related cleanup.
  • Caradoc save: create a separate file before the beach conversation. Fighting and defeating him is an achievement branch with later consequences; a first story run does not need to force that branch.

The reliable exit signal is not merely reaching daylight. You should have met Arthur, received the broader A World to Win quest, crossed the mechanism opened by Soul Fragment power, and reached Caradoc’s boat after the Giant Sentinel. If the boat will not advance the story, return to the Arthur sequence rather than searching the cells again.

In the Horns, both political routes must repair the same gong

A mounted traveler approaching a distant city in Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon
Region travel is the reward for completing the artifact ritual, not for exhausting every local icon.

Follow the road west, activate the two convenient travel gates, and use Caradoc’s pin at the Horns entrance. Fearghas will not immediately reveal the Captain. Dead as Dreams is the supported service route: speak with Margh at the Hunter’s Camp, clear the graveyard crypt, deal with Yorath, then report back. The walkthrough also records a 500-coin payment as an alternative. Either method should leave Fearghas ready to point you toward the All-Mother’s Temple.

At the Temple, Vrann begins Acts of Kindness. Her gift task is a gate, not a morality quiz with one mandatory answer. Potion, axe, ear necklace, or Therrov’s charm all return the route to Vrann; the concrete proof is Vrann’s Key, which opens the Temple meeting. If the inner door is still locked, finish the selected gift and return to Vrann instead of attempting to enter through another quest.

Make a manual save before the Captain/Galahad sequence. Captain Breandan wants Galahad dead; Galahad can instead be warned about the Captain. These branches change leadership and several later opportunities, but they converge on the artifact ritual:

  • Captain route: kill Galahad, hear Breandan’s offer, investigate Sewal’s Tomb, and decide whether to keep helping him with Fearghas. Refusing at the tomb exit can fail Shadow of the Horns and make the fort hostile, so do not click through this conversation without a save.
  • Galahad route: expose the Captain, finish Shuffling the Deck, fight through the Temple, and install Fearghas as interim Captain.

Completion players should preserve an earlier Horns save. Readable achievement references warn that the Captain branch and its follow-up dialogue protect several Keeper-related unlocks, while other choices preserve different NPCs. This route will not pretend one political answer is universally best.

Whichever leader remains, swim to the island at the Sunken Village and take the Broken Gong. Osbryht requires 15 Ethereal Cobwebs to repair it. Collect them from Wyrdness enemies at night or from Wyrd structures, return to the island, and perform the ritual. Back at the fort, interact with the memory outside the Captain’s quarters, enter Arthur’s realm, and place the blade. The Hollow Blade is the route proof; the newly available King’s Soul tree and Caradoc’s instruction then point north to Cuanacht.

If Cuanacht is not opening, audit this exact chain: leader resolved, Broken Gong taken, 15 cobwebs delivered, repaired gong used on the island, memory pulled at the fort, Excalibur placed with Arthur. More Horns side quests will not replace a missing link.

Cuanacht is two tablet halves plus one expedition

After the arrival cutscene and awakening in Lord Yvain’s mansion, Apocalypticists directs you to investigate Denholm’s plan and speak with Maggot. Agreeing to help Maggot starts Have a Nice Trip. Retrieve five Luminous Silver Dust and three Raspberries from the marked camp north of the Forest Gate, enter Maggot’s consciousness, then choose how to resolve the meeting. The saved walkthrough records a check of 10 or more in one primary stat to refuse the kill; if that option is absent, it is a stat gate, not a broken quest marker.

Menhir Rites then creates two concurrent jobs. Do not hand the story to Maggot or Denholm until both are closed:

  1. Sagremor half: dive into the lake northeast of Cuanacht and enter the Abyss of King Sagremor. At the castle, the Custodian opens Throne of the Depths. Help Claire inside her book-world dream, then help the Midwife recover Noah, Hugo, and Renaud. These two threads produce the Chapel key. Defeat Queen Sagremor and speak with the King to recover the cracked tablet half.
  2. Neante half: Neante waits in the Tarian Family Crypt, whose entrance sits below Yvain’s mansion. Where the Light Once Dwelt sends you to the Corrupted Temple for Laurelia’s Doll, then back to Neante for the cleansing ritual. The resulting tablet half may not appear as a normal inventory object; the quest state is the safer check.

The Sagremor throne is worth its own save. Accepting Stigandr’s spores earlier only gives you the option; it does not spend them. Using them on the King produces the fungal outcome and its achievement. Refusing produces a different aftermath and loot state. Save after Queen Sagremor but before addressing the King if you want to see both without replaying the castle.

With the tablet resolved, return to the faction you chose. Maggot and Denholm lead to different political outcomes, but the story must return to Yvain’s proposed expedition and Grail Cycle. On the Maggot-aligned route, the saved walkthrough specifically requires Neante, Maggot, and Erfyr; Erfyr may remain unavailable until Change of Heart and The Heart that Defies are complete. Treat a missing recruiter as a dependency clue, not a reason to wander to the next region.

Report the expedition state to Yvain, enter Arthur’s realm, and place the Shield. Shield of Avalon is the Act 2 proof. Only then is The Long Defeat in the Forlorn Swords the clean next main objective.

Sarras opens after the Cuanacht awakening, but it is not Act 3

Sanctuary of Sarras is a paid expansion with its own region and roughly 10-15 hours of content according to the developer. The official entry condition is much earlier than the base ending: own and enable the expansion, unlock Cuanacht, and watch the awakening scene in Yvain’s mansion. Place a campfire, speak with Black Annis, track the quest she gives you, and enter Sarras Chapel on Cuanacht’s southern shoreline, close to the passage back toward the Horns. The dungeon leads into Sarras.

The expansion’s story chain begins with The Sanctuary of Sarras, moves through The Descent, and folds Bring Back the Tremble, Fire of the Mind, Visceral Ends, and Melody of the Deep into its progression. Those quests share one DLC player task, so they are not split into separate articles here. If Black Annis offers nothing, verify the DLC installation and the Yvain awakening before troubleshooting the chapel.

Sarras does not award the base game’s next Arthur artifact. Enter it when you want a self-contained expansion journey; return to Yvain and the Forlorn Swords when you want to advance the base critical path.

The Forlorn Swords ask whether preparation is worth the delay

The last artifact can be forced, but the regional alliance route gives you more information and a cleaner readiness check.

Meet Gerf’hanr at the Capital entrance in the southeast. He starts Divided We Fall, an alliance sweep across the Sveinn, Theud, Ulfr, and Volker storylines. The main route does not strictly require their agreement: the lift behind Gerf’hanr can take you toward King’s Threat without it, and Arthur will warn rather than physically stop you. That makes the choice a readiness test.

For the shorter route, stock healing, verify a reliable way to break stamina, and take the lift. The artifact path stacks Fore-Dweller fighters with Giants, Crimson Creepers, Fleshtrees, and Eldritch Reapers. Separate shielded enemies from Giants, clear the mobile target first, and use the wooden elevation where ranged attacks need space. The final magic barrier drops only after its Giant and Fore-Dweller defenders are dead. Place the Helm in Arthur’s realm to unlock Crown of Ashes.

For the alliance route, finish each tribe’s linked chain and report every outcome to Gerf’hanr before taking the artifact. The failure signal is a tribe that was visited but never formally agreed to attend; Divided We Fall cares about the end of the local chain, not discovery of its settlement. This longer route supplies regional rewards and resolves conflicts that can otherwise surface after the Crown sequence.

Build the secret-ending proof before touching the Conclave door

A spellcaster facing a dark figure in the Wyrdness in Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon
The secret route is gated by main-story artifacts, so late Act 3 is the efficient time to audit it.

The secret ending is not unlocked by choosing the right final sentence alone. It has two evidence tracks: three Weaver areas and five knight tombs. They are best audited after the Crown because the doors depend on Excalibur, the Shield, and the Crown.

  • Complete the Weaver area opened after Excalibur in the Horns.
  • Complete the second area after the Shield in Cuanacht.
  • Complete the third area in the Forlorn Swords after the first two; defeat the Weaver and obtain the Life Spindle.
  • Complete all five artifact-gated tombs. Exhaust the story interaction or local task inside each one.
  • Use Fionola appearing as you leave as the tomb completion detector. If she does not appear, re-enter before assuming the game counted it.

The final detector is a new Grail dialogue choice referring to using the Life Spindle. If it is missing, do not guess at a different ending option. Check the inventory for the Spindle, confirm all three Weaver conversations/encounters, and revisit the tomb whose exit did not produce Fionola. The underlying Steam guides were readable but displayed removed/incompatible warnings, so this route uses their shared checkpoint logic rather than claiming their old screenshots are a current map.

The actual point of no return is the doorway beside Caradoc

After placing the Crown, use the new portal back toward the Capital, report to Gerf’hanr, and return to eastern Cuanacht. The Charred Conclave lies below the cliffs southeast of the Wicker Man. Falling into the approach is inconvenient but not yet the final lock: a campfire can still provide a way out. Activate the three stone pedestals to power the portal, speak with Caradoc, and stop before the nearby doorway.

Create the permanent endgame save there. Passing through the doorway commits the route to the Grail sequence and its confrontations. The game can offer a return to the pre-ending state after completion, but that is cleanup convenience, not a reason to enter with an unfinished secret route or an uncertain faction save.

Inside, hear the competing cases, follow the hand-marked path, and decide at the Grail. Opposing Caradoc can lead to fighting him; several other resolutions lead to a fight with Arthur. The combat answer is secondary to the proof chain: if the choice you prepared is not visible, reload the Conclave save and repair the missing prerequisite instead of accepting a nearby line as an equivalent.

Diagnose a stalled journal by the last missing proof

What looks stuck Most useful check Correct recovery
Fearghas will not reveal the Captain Dead as Dreams report or the recorded 500-coin alternative Resolve one access method, then ask again; unrelated bounties are not the gate
The All-Mother’s Temple remains closed Vrann’s selected gift and Vrann’s Key Finish that gift loop and return to Vrann
Cuanacht is not the next destination Repaired Gong, fort memory, Excalibur placement Complete the ritual and Arthur-realm interaction in that order
Menhir Rites will not close Sagremor tablet half and Neante cleansing half Finish the missing castle or Corrupted Temple branch before choosing Maggot/Denholm
Erfyr cannot join the expedition Change of Heart and The Heart that Defies Resolve his dependency chain, then recruit him
Black Annis does not start Sarras DLC enabled, Cuanacht unlocked, Yvain awakening watched Meet all three conditions, place a campfire, and speak again
A tribe does not count for Divided We Fall Its local storyline ended with formal cooperation Return to the unresolved tribe chain before reporting to Gerf’hanr
Life Spindle ending line is absent Three Weaver areas, Life Spindle, five Fionola exit confirmations Repair the missing detector before crossing the Conclave doorway

The campaign is ready to finish when the Crown is placed, the exact ending line you prepared is present, and the Charred Conclave save exists outside Caradoc’s doorway. At that point the journal may still contain dozens of valid quests, but none of them is being mistaken for the next main-story proof.
