DOOM: The Dark Ages Walkthrough: 22-Chapter Route and Cleanup Plan

A shield-bearing Slayer facing an armored demon in DOOM The Dark Ages

The campaign map in DOOM: The Dark Ages tells you where to go, but not what kind of problem the next chapter is about to become. A narrow weapons tutorial can turn into a battlefield with five separate objectives; a dragon mission can end on foot; a chapter that looks like a collectible sweep can actually be waiting for one key, one arena leader, or one vehicle switch. The useful route is therefore not “follow every marker.” It is to identify the chapter’s lock, clear the fight that controls it, and postpone optional cleanup until the lock is safely open.

Keep three ledgers instead of chasing one percentage

The game saves different kinds of progress for different reasons. Separating them prevents a missing secret from looking like a stalled story objective.

  • Campaign ledger: the white objective and the last device, key, carrier, portal, or boss that changed it. When progression stops, this is the only ledger that matters.
  • Mission ledger: secrets, toys, codex entries, weapon skins, currencies, Demonic Essence, and challenges shown in the dossier. Base-campaign collectibles can be revisited with mission select, so a first run does not need to become a room-by-room reset marathon.
  • Combat ledger: shield availability, melee charges, B.F.C. space, armor generation, and which fodder enemies remain alive. A late arena often feels impossible because the player spent all five resources on its opening wave.

Use the automap before committing to an exit, but read its absence carefully. Some routes reveal pickups only after a door, key, or combat node is resolved. If the objective marker is still on the current arena, searching a remote ledge rarely fixes it. Find the remaining leader, shield wall, gore portal, cannon, or interactable first.

The 22-chapter route in one pass

Chapter The progression lock What to verify before moving on
1. Village of Khalim Learn block and Shield Charge, collect the Power Gauntlet, use the Blue Key route, then reach the titan/turret sequence. The Shredder has been collected and Shield Charge works on both enemies and marked traversal targets.
2. Hebeth Recover the Shield Saw, use the Blue Key Card, and push through the facility with the Accelerator. You have seen the first Sentinel Shrine and understand that gold buys weapon upgrades rather than campaign access.
3. Barrier Core Use the Atlan to reach the power core and move it away from the city. Dash, attack chains, and the perfect-dodge response are comfortable before the long vehicle chapters return.
4. Sentinel Barracks Advance with the Pulverizer and Impaler, then defeat the Vagary Champion. The champion is the exit check; optional rubies and side rooms are not required to make the chapter end.
5. Holy City of Aratum Destroy four Hell Carriers with Serrat, then fly to the Heart Chamber. Each carrier has actually registered; collect the Super Shotgun and Cycler during the route rather than leaving them behind.
6. Siege — Part 1 Break five Gore Portals and four Artillery Cannons across the open battlefield. The objective counters, not the direction you entered from, are the reliable proof that the battlefield is clear.
7. Siege — Part 2 Work through the city’s locked combat spaces and reach the chapter’s final defense. Use the Secret Key for optional rooms only after the next main gate is open.
8. Abyssal Forest Take the Yellow Key through the first arena, cross the barracks, reach the mine, and beat the Agaddon Champion. If the forest loops, return to the most recent locked gate or arena exit instead of following unexplored map edges.
9. Ancestral Forge Complete the right, middle, and left switch arenas, then enter the Forge. Update 4 now checkpoints each major switch fight; confirm the completed switch before leaving its arena.
10. Forsaken Plains Breach the front gate, destroy both Hell Cannons, obtain the Atlan Core, and power the machine. The two cannon counters and the core handoff must all be complete; general battlefield kills do not replace them.
11. Hellbreaker Drive the Atlan to Ahzrak’s castle, open the gate, and survive the Ahzrak confrontation. Save dashes for telegraphed heavy attacks and use the on-screen finisher window instead of continuing a normal combo.
12. Sentinel Command Station Find a way out of the defense area, recover the Hangar Key Card, and unlock the hangar. The card belongs at the hangar route; do not spend time treating it as an optional secret key.
13. From Beyond On Serrat, destroy three tentacle weak spots and close two demonic portals. Watch both counters. A surviving portal can make the creature phase look complete while the mission remains locked.
14. Spire of Nerathul Drain the water, disable three stasis emitters, obtain the B.F.C., and release the Old One. Leave room in the B.F.C. meter for pickups and verify all three emitters before following the final release marker.
15. City of Ry’uul Navigate the shifting city and activate its portal. When geometry changes, return to the last activated device; the new path is usually near that state change.
16. Kar’Thul Marshes Gather two relic fragments, assemble the Relic Key, and enter the portal. One fragment is never “close enough”: the assembly objective must replace the two-part counter.
17. Temple of Lomarith Follow the gate chain, activate the required gate, and continue through the newly opened route. A gate opening is a route change. Check behind and above the device before assuming the next marker is through the old corridor.
18. Belly of the Beast Find a route out, destroy the organ, enter the temple, and reach Commander Thira. The organ is the environmental lock; killing every nearby demon without destroying it cannot advance the chapter.
19. Harbor of Souls Steal the barge and fight through to its helm to return to the mortal plane. Once aboard, orient around the helm objective rather than doubling back to the harbor’s optional branches.
20. Resurrection Destroy three Siege Towers, invade Kreed’s ship, and clear both Kreed Maykr phases. The Yellow Key cleanup is optional; the three tower counter and ship objective are the story spine.
21. Final Battle Destroy three Hellgate Generators, complete the Atlan/Old One sequence, and survive Ahzrak’s three combat phases. Hotfix-era builds correct an Atlan sequence spawn issue; update before retrying a run that loads the wrong form.
22. Reckoning Clear the temple grounds, cross the Lower Keep, board Ahzrak’s ship, then defeat the Witch-assisted and solo boss phases. Use the Secret Key rooms before boarding only if you want immediate cleanup; the final ship route is the campaign commitment.

Build the Slayer’s supply loop before Aratum opens the sky

Chapters 1 and 2 are not disposable tutorials. They establish the loop that every later arena assumes: block ordinary pressure, parry green attacks, throw the Shield Saw to pin or interrupt, spend melee charges on fodder for ammunition, then use a Glory Kill when health is the scarce resource. Shield Charge is also traversal. A marked enemy or object above the Slayer can be a route anchor, not merely an attack target.

The weapon pickups arrive as deliberate answers. The Power Gauntlet gives the first renewable melee supply; the Shredder provides sustained fire; the Accelerator handles plasma duties; the Pulverizer controls groups; and the Impaler rewards deliberate shots. Do not spread early gold across every branch just because a Sentinel Shrine is available. Buy one reliable survival interaction and one damage interaction that you can trigger on demand. An upgrade that creates armor or makes a frequent shield/melee action stronger is more useful during the campaign than a capstone for a weapon you rarely draw.

Aratum is the first major rules swap. Serrat’s carrier hunt is a counter-driven flight circuit, then the mission returns to a more familiar on-foot route. Treat each carrier as a self-contained target: clear its defenses, confirm the counter changes, and only then fly toward another marker. If the objective does not decrement, circling the next carrier merely compounds the confusion.

Siege and Ancestral Forge are circuits, not straight roads

Siege — Part 1 is easiest to read from its counters: five Gore Portals and four Artillery Cannons. Pick one nearby objective, finish its combat enclosure, verify the counter, then sweep the adjacent resources before traveling to the next. Crossing the battlefield for a distant gold marker while a local portal remains active creates extra backtracking and leaves enemies occupying the route you will need again.

Keep lesser demons alive until the dangerous target appears. An Archvile, champion, or shielded heavy can turn a comfortable opening into an ammunition drought. Fodder is a reserve: melee it for ammunition, Glory Kill it for health, or use it as a safe parry source. Clear it early only when it physically blocks movement or feeds a summoner.

Ancestral Forge has a different shape but the same logic. Its right, middle, and left arenas power separate parts of the route. Finish one arena’s control action before rotating to the next. Update 4 added checkpoints after those three major fights, so a current build should not require replaying the entire circuit after a death. If the ending Agaddon Hunter arena remains inaccessible, first confirm all three switch states rather than searching the Forge entrance for an unmarked lever.

Forsaken Plains then combines both ideas. The front gate, right cannon, left cannon, and Atlan Core are four discrete proofs. The Atlan does not become ready because the open map is mostly empty; it becomes ready after both cannons are gone and the core has been recovered and installed.

Vehicle chapters replace the combat grammar

The Atlan cannot be played as an oversized Slayer. Its survival is built around reading a large telegraph, dodging at the last useful moment, committing to a short combo, and taking the finisher when it appears. Long attack strings are a trap when a boss is winding up. Interrupt your own ambition, preserve the dash, then punish the recovery.

Serrat’s sections are counter hunts. In From Beyond, the mission alternates between three tentacle weak spots and two demonic portals. Focus the currently tracked object; free-firing into the creature while a portal remains active does not satisfy the portal counter. Slow or reverse when you need a new approach angle instead of overshooting and turning the whole encounter into a wide loop.

Large battlefields reward target discipline more than indiscriminate clearing.

Spire of Nerathul returns the player to layered traversal. Draining the water changes reachable space; each stasis emitter changes the next part of the route; obtaining the B.F.C. changes how the final arena can be managed. Keep at least one B.F.C. slot available when the level presents ammunition. A full meter turns the next bolt into wasted map value, while an empty slot lets a hard arena be shortened at the moment its heavy wave arrives.

Late-game locks are nouns: fragment, key, organ, helm

From City of Ry’uul through Harbor of Souls, the safest diagnosis is to name the missing object rather than say “the path is blocked.” Ry’uul wants an activated portal. Kar’Thul wants two fragments combined into one Relic Key. Lomarith wants a gate state changed. Belly of the Beast wants the organ destroyed. Harbor of Souls wants the barge’s helm reached.

This matters because combat can continue around an unresolved object. If a room refills or a route seems to fold back on itself, open the dossier and compare its noun with what you last touched. “Assemble the Relic Key” means the fragment hunt is over and an interaction is now available; “Enter the Portal” means further marsh exploration is optional. “Destroy the Organ” means the remaining demon is not necessarily the lock. “Reach the Helm” means the ship, not the harbor, is now the level.

Ry’uul and Lomarith also use state-changing architecture. After activating a device, do a short 360-degree scan of the device’s height, the wall behind it, and the floor below it. A bridge, wall, or gate that did not exist seconds ago is more likely to be the route than a distant unexplored corner.

Spend the last four chapters on targets, not spectacle

Resurrection, Final Battle, and Reckoning stack large fights around exact counters. In Resurrection, destroy all three Siege Towers before treating Kreed’s ship as available. During the Kreed Maykr fight, read the phase transition as a rules reset: reposition, locate new hazards, and rebuild armor rather than continuing the same firing rhythm into a changed arena.

Final Battle begins with three Hellgate Generators, then escalates through the Atlan and Old One sequence into a three-phase Ahzrak encounter. Preserve a reliable ammo source for each phase. If a B.F.C. shot deletes the opening pressure but leaves no fodder, melee charge, or armor plan for the next health bar, it solved the wrong part of the fight.

Reckoning is the final on-foot audit. Clear the temple grounds, traverse the Lower Keep, and decide whether to use the Secret Key rooms before boarding the ship. The boss begins with the Witch affecting the first phase and continues with Ahzrak alone. Remove the auxiliary pressure the current phase actually exposes; do not tunnel on Ahzrak while another source is controlling space. Between phases, refill from the arena before triggering the next commitment whenever the layout allows it.

Repair a losing arena by reading the drop you need

When the screen fills, identify the resource action before choosing the next target.
Failure signal What the game is asking for Change immediately
Ammunition collapses while fodder is still present. Melee is the renewable ammunition action. Stop shooting the smallest demon; spend a melee charge on it and resume the priority target.
Health disappears during an execution opportunity. Glory Kills trade a vulnerable target for recovery and temporary safety. Take the execution before another projectile removes the window.
Armor never stabilizes. Your equipped upgrade or attack is not producing armor often enough. Use the armor-generating interaction you actually purchased; do not assume raw damage will create the same drops.
A green attack keeps breaking the rhythm. It is a parry lesson, not a request to sprint away forever. Hold a defensible angle, watch the release rather than the wind-up, and counter after the successful parry.
A heavy enemy stays mobile and denies space. The Shield Saw can interrupt or pin many unarmored targets. Throw the shield, close distance during the stun, then recall before the next required block.
An armored target absorbs the normal rotation. Armor must be heated and broken before the health plan works. Switch to the appropriate heat/armor interaction instead of repeating the low-value weapon.
An energy shield dominates the lane. Plasma pressure is the intended shield answer. Use the Accelerator or Cycler family, then swap once the shield breaks.
The arena looks empty but the gate stays red. A leader, summoner, shield wall, or spawned enemy remains. Scan the automap edges and vertical ledges; follow attack indicators before searching for a puzzle switch.

Clean up by dependency, not by chapter number

Mission select makes base-campaign collectibles non-missable, but a random replay order wastes time. Start with chapters missing a Secret Key, key card, or traversal-dependent room. Next revisit open battlefields whose counters make their remaining routes easy to isolate. Leave linear codex or toy pickups for last, because they require the least route reconstruction.

  1. Open the mission dossier and record only incomplete categories. Do not replay for a generic percentage.
  2. Enter the chapter and reach the first point where the automap exposes its branches.
  3. Resolve the key or device that controls those branches before following currency icons.
  4. When a challenge condition is met, let the game register it before restarting or leaving the mission.
  5. After collecting the target, verify the dossier counter. A pickup animation without a changed counter is a reason to reload the checkpoint, not a reason to assume it will fix itself later.

Update 4 specifically fixed the Pulverizer codex award in Sentinel Barracks, inaccessible gold in Reckoning under a rare wall-break failure, and several progression problems around Ancestral Forge. Those fixes are a reminder to separate an old build bug from a route mistake. Update first; then use the mission’s missing noun and counter to choose the recovery.
