DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations Walkthrough: Trials and Master Keys

The unarmored Slayer in the frozen realm of DOOM The Dark Ages Revelations

Revelations is not Chapter 23 of DOOM: The Dark Ages. It is a separate paid campaign with its own entry on campaign select, a scripted equipment reset, a Purgatory hub, three Ascension Stone trials, and a second layer of Master Key objectives after the story. Trying to read it like the base game creates two common errors: treating the broken Shield Saw as a bug, and mistaking the first return from a trial for the end of that level’s content.

Separate the escape route from the Master Key route

There are two overlapping progress tracks. The first gets the Slayer out of Purgatory and finishes the story. The second opens the sealed rooms left inside each major level.

Stage Proof that the story advanced What remains for later
Proving Grounds Obtain the Oracle, pass the council chamber and Blue Skull gates, defeat the Agaddon Brute Champion, then face the Henchman. Four secrets and several codex entries can be cleaned before the final elevator, but they are not story locks.
Purgatory: first visit Complete the Chain Spear tutorial and activate the trial portal system. Most of the hub is ability-gated. Do not force Master Key doors yet.
Hell’s Core Reach the excavation, destroy the machine, finish the counter-insurgent operation, and return with Ascension Stone 1. The first Master Key is acquired, but its sealed routes are a post-story layer.
Purgatory: second visit Use four anchors to reclaim the Shield Saw and open the next trial route. The Master Key door and remaining hub relic pieces can wait.
Chasm of Xal’Goroth Resolve the blue/yellow power-core wings and complete the trial for Ascension Stone 2. Master doors, endgame arenas, Blood Iron, and the Astral Boss Key fragments remain.
Osseus Recover two Skull Keys, enter the Citadel, and finish the trial for Ascension Stone 3. Return paths open after the final Master Key is available.
Uprising Expose the truth, cross the courtyard, use the Red Keycard route, and defeat the Henchman. The ending restores Purgatory access and makes the four-level Master Key cleanup practical.
Endgame Complete each level’s Classic Encounter, Ritual of Power, and Praetor Fight; collect the Astral Boss Key fragments. After the Master Arenas, the Revelations Ripatorium content unlocks and the final Purgatory confrontation becomes the cleanup capstone.

The names are similar enough to cause confusion. Three Ascension Stones belong to the escape/story track. Four Master Keys belong to the sealed-level/endgame track. A level can therefore be “complete enough” to advance the story while visibly retaining locked doors.

Proving Grounds teaches locks before it takes the shield away

The opening wave awards the Oracle. Clear small enemies before committing to the largest target; they otherwise turn every dodge into chip damage. The new campaign may present a changed loadout, but the Proving Grounds still expects Shield Saw traversal and parries. Leave the Revelations tutorial setting on for the first run, as the current official settings recommend.

The council chamber door is the first route puzzle. Find the green corpse above the approach, lodge the shield in it, travel upward, then Shield Charge the target so its orientation changes. Throw again to open the route, drop into the armor-lined corridor, and use the lever. The important signal is the lever opening the council chamber—not simply reaching the upper ledge.

The next locked route wants a Blue Skull. Follow the nearby marker and expect doors to seal while enemies remain. Do not sprint through a newly opened threshold until the wave counter is visibly finished; carrying a live enemy into the previous room can leave the desired exit red.

Three enemy rules matter here:

  • Buzzsaw: attack the wheel and deny its high-speed lane rather than tracking the body through every pass.
  • Acolyte: remove its copies first. The true Acolyte stays protected while the illusions survive; shield throws also interrupt its repeated relocations.
  • Vagary: its direct projectiles leave room to fight at distance, but the supporting minions make staring at the boss unsafe.

In the multi-door room, look high on the right for the first machine. Lodge the shield to release a door, Shield Charge through the blocked route, climb to the second machine, and repeat. The marker beyond starts the Agaddon Brute Champion. Sustained damage fills the purple stun meter; a high-rate-of-fire weapon makes that check easier than a slow weapon with long gaps. A Pinky Rider joins the fight, so create the stun without letting the rider control your side angle.

After the elevator, collect the council-chamber codex if desired and meet the Henchman. This loss is scripted. The broken Shield Saw and transfer to Purgatory are the correct ending of the Proving Grounds, not a failed boss attempt.

Purgatory makes mobility the new defensive resource

The Slayer wakes without the old armor upgrades, B.F.C., or functioning Shield Saw, while the familiar ranged and melee arsenal remains available. The Chain Spear now supplies three distinct actions:

  • Slash is the committed attack and later the center of Empowerment upgrades.
  • Meat Hook pulls the Slayer toward marked anchors and enemies; it is both traversal and target selection.
  • Dash creates the perfect-dodge window and cancels bad positioning. Update 4 exposes a dedicated Perfect Dodge Window setting rather than forcing every player into one timing.

Do not disable the Spear Empowerment meter while learning. It explains when a sequence of successful actions has created the stronger state. A useful training loop is hook to a safe target, slash, dash through the counterattack, then fire while repositioning. Repeatedly spending Dash just to travel leaves no answer for the attack that the arena was designed around.

The Slayer striking a towering demon with the glowing Chain Spear
The Chain Spear turns distance into a decision: close it for damage, or preserve it for escape.

After the tutorial, activate the central portal console. It establishes the real requirement: complete three trials and return with three Ascension Stones. Explore only the Purgatory branches the current kit can reach, take the easy codex and skin detours, then enter the Hell’s Core portal. The four Master Keys are a different objective and should not delay the first trial.

Hell’s Core is a battery route wrapped around two return paths

Enter Hell’s Core and use the Chain Spear to reach the interior. The early locked door needs a Hell Battery placed into its highlighted socket. Later, when multiple sockets or movable batteries appear, treat each battery as state rather than loot: remember where it came from, which gate it powers, and whether the new route contains another battery before moving it again.

The first major combat lock culminates in an Archvile. Do not chase its summons across the whole chamber. Close on the Archvile with the Spear when its movement creates space, interrupt its control of the wave, then clear what remains. Portals on the floor carry the route upward after the fight.

The Hollow Shrine introduces Relics and Platinum. A completed relic produces enough currency to make a meaningful Spear or suit purchase; scattered pieces by themselves do not. Choose an upgrade that reinforces an action already in your rotation. If Dash is your reliable defense, improve the path that rewards successful dodges. If Slash is the action that consistently lands, buy the branch that converts those hits into Empowerment rather than purchasing a situational effect you cannot yet trigger.

The deeper route alternates Spear anchors, Hell Batteries, a Blue Skull gate, and combat nodes. Use this order when the level looks circular:

  1. Place both available Hell Batteries before leaving their chamber.
  2. Use the newly powered route to reach the Blue Skull section.
  3. Defeat the Blighted Knight protecting the key and use the key on the matching gate.
  4. Finish the large switch arenas and follow the objective to the machine.
  5. Destroy the machine, complete the counter-insurgent operation, and verify that Ascension Stone 1 and Master Key 1 are registered before returning.

Several Master Key doors remain visible during this first visit. Their presence is intentional. Mark their Hollow Shrine or nearby landmark, but do not invent a missing battery route trying to open them early.

Four anchors restore the Shield Saw in Purgatory

Back in the hub, inspect the newly accessible petrified bodies and codex route, then follow the objective toward the Shield Saw recovery. Four anchors change the hub in sequence. Each one is a discrete environmental proof:

  1. Activate the first anchor and defeat the armored response it summons.
  2. Cross to the anchor near the rotating structure and the Master Key door.
  3. Use the third anchor to drain the lake, exposing the next traversal layer.
  4. Reach the fourth anchor and use the resulting catapult route.

When the Shield Saw returns, combat and puzzles become dual-tool problems. A blue Energy Node is generally a Shield Saw interaction; a Spear icon is a Meat Hook interaction; a breakable shield mark wants Shield Charge. If a puzzle seems to ask one weapon to do everything, re-scan for the other icon before assuming the timing is impossible.

Chasm of Xal’Goroth is a two-wing power-core puzzle

The Chasm begins with floating ruins, Cosmic Elementals, and a sequence of shield nodes, Spear anchors, and self-assembling bridges. Destroying a Cosmic Elemental’s Lost Souls near their source damages the spawner and removes incoming pressure at the same time. The Shredder’s rapid hits can establish its debuff, after which a Spear Slash or shield follow-up creates a controlled burst.

The central chamber presents a blue wing and a yellow wing, each feeding one power core. The supported checkpoint route is:

  • Choose a wing and stay with it until its Eldritch Key is recovered.
  • Use the key barrier to expose the matching Energy Node.
  • Charge the node with the Shield Saw, recall the shield when the rotating protection opens, and throw again at the revealed core.
  • Return to the central chamber only after the core’s destruction registers, then repeat the structure on the other color.

The blue route includes a movable bridge and cube. Rotate the bridge with the Spear, drop or move the cube into a usable position, power its node with the shield, and use the platform it creates. If the cube is correctly placed but produces no route, the bridge orientation is the missing state. The yellow wing is the second half of the same two-core objective; finish its key and core before following the final trial marker.

The captured text walkthrough was still adding detail beyond the yellow-door boundary on July 20, so this article does not fabricate a turn-by-turn collectible path for the second half. The current level checklist and completed-video index independently confirm the Chasm’s eight initial secrets, three Leader Essence shards, endgame return, and separate Master Key arenas. Use the in-game core counter and objective marker as authoritative when room ordering differs.

Osseus will not open the Citadel with one Skull Key

Osseus is an open route organized around the Citadel and two Skull Keys. Finding the first key changes the objective to 1/2; it does not make the Citadel route ready. Explore one branch to completion, return to the central Hollow Shrine, and take the other branch rather than trying every locked door with the wrong color.

The level uses box movement, shield statues, Spear anchors, and line-routing puzzles. In the line room, the goal is not to illuminate every surface. Rotate or redirect the mechanism until the white path reaches the skull receiver. When the receiver activates, take the Red Skull Key and watch for the objective to change to “Enter the Citadel.” That wording is the signal to stop solving side rooms.

Inside the Citadel, spend Platinum before the final combat sequence. An Archvile appears in the heavier wave, followed by the level’s leader fight. Preserve one rapid way to close distance and one defensive Dash. The July 10 hotfix repaired a case where dying could return the player behind a red wall in Osseus; a current build should reload normally. If an old save still reproduces it, update and load the most recent checkpoint before replaying the whole level.

Uprising turns keys into a boss-resource plan

Walk to the throne room and expose the truth; the calm city route becomes the uprising only after that story interaction. Return toward the courtyard, clear the leader-controlled arena, and continue through the Hollow Shrine route. The mid-level lock is a Red Keycard. Once found, use it on the matching gate rather than sweeping back to the Master Key door, which still belongs to endgame.

A later arena supplies Berserk and floods the space with enemies and Hell’s Champions. Berserk is not a souvenir. Take it when the wave begins and use the unlimited melee window to erase the densest pressure before it can spread. After the effect ends, find the second Red Keycard gate and verify the route beyond is open.

The Henchman rematch has two phases. In the first, keep the floating red heads under control; they create extra projectile lanes but do not repay the ammunition spent on them with health. The Chain Spear can remove a head while keeping the Slayer mobile, allowing gunfire to remain on the boss. Parry the green staff, backhand, tentacle, and explosive timings you can read reliably; dash away from the shield wave when its gap is badly positioned.

Phase two uses a larger space and can corrupt parts of the floor. Rebuild distance, locate safe ground, and then resume damage. The phase change is not permission to stand where the previous arena was safe. Defeating the Henchman completes the main story route, awards the last Master Key track, and returns the Slayer to Purgatory for cleanup.

Revelations repeatedly changes what is real, reachable, or powered; the last activated device is the best navigation anchor.

Use the same four-question audit in every Master Key level

Return to Hell’s Core, Chasm of Xal’Goroth, Osseus, and Uprising only after the Master Key route is ready. Each level’s endgame layer follows the same practical audit even though its rooms differ:

  1. Where is the Master door? Warp to the closest Hollow Shrine instead of replaying the story entrance.
  2. Where is the Classic Encounter? Finish it and collect the weapon skin/shotgun part reward before leaving its arena.
  3. Where is the Ritual of Power? Learn the route once, then attempt the Gold rating; a failed timer is not a story lock.
  4. Where is the Praetor Fight? Clear it for Praetor Essence and the second Astral Boss Key fragment.

Hell’s Core is the currently readable worked example. Its Master route introduces Blood Iron, a Classic Underhalls encounter, a timed Ritual of Power, and a Praetor arena. The ritual is a traversal test: use Spear anchors, boosters, climbable walls, and the Berserk section without stopping to fight enemies that the route does not require. The Praetor fight is not timed, so enter it with the loadout built for control rather than copying the ritual’s speed setup.

Completion checklists map two Astral Boss Key fragments to each of the four endgame levels, eight in total. Confirm the current dossier counter after every Ritual and Praetor reward. Once the key is assembled, return to the final Purgatory route. Update 4 also states that Revelations demons, arenas, loadout, and presets in Ripatorium unlock after completing the Master Arenas; finishing only the Uprising story is not the same unlock condition.

Recover known Update 4 failures without replaying a trial

Failure Current recovery What not to do
Chain Spear controls show ?? Install Hotfix 1, reset the Slayer control set to defaults, confirm, then rebind any customized actions. Do not continue the tutorial with missing Slash, Hook, or Dash inputs.
Custom bindings changed after the hotfix Rebind them manually; the official fix reset player bindings. Do not assume an old profile will preserve every custom key.
Shield Saw and Chain Spear stop responding after primary ammo reaches zero Switch to another gun, perform any melee action, or reload the latest checkpoint. Do not restart the whole level before trying the documented recovery.
Abilities stop after using a Hollow Shrine Load the most recent checkpoint; avoid chaining Dash and Slash immediately before the next shrine interaction. Do not keep spending inputs into an unresponsive state.
A repeated Master Arena spawns no enemies Load the previous checkpoint to restore the encounter. Do not wait at a sealed gate for a nonexistent delayed wave.
Death in Hell’s Core or Osseus places the Slayer behind a red wall Confirm Hotfix 1 is installed and reload the latest checkpoint. Do not rely on pre-hotfix route exploits or out-of-bounds movement.
The level still shows sealed Master doors after its Ascension Stone Continue the story until the Master Key/endgame layer is available. Do not search the first-visit rooms for a nonexistent early key.

The correct final state is not a perfectly empty first-visit map. It is a completed Uprising story, four revisitable Master Key levels, registered Ritual/Praetor rewards, an assembled Astral Boss Key, and an unlocked endgame confrontation. That sequence keeps the DLC’s two progress tracks separate all the way to the last arena.
