Wuthering Waves Story Order: The Route to Mengzhou and Electro Rover

A mountain city and distant ring structures in Wuthering Waves

Version 3.5 gives “caught up” two different meanings. You can follow Rover’s story from Jinzhou through Mt. Firmament, the Black Shores, Rinascita and Lahai-Roi before entering Mengzhou, or use the new Pioneer Experience fast-track route to reach the latest chapter sooner. Both can open content. Only the first preserves the story’s introductions and handoffs in order.

This guide is a spoiler-light route map for new and returning players who see several Main Quests at once and do not know which one is the backbone. It identifies the chapter bridges that are easy to mistake for optional errands, explains what to do when Union Level stops the early campaign, and ends at the two current Version 3.5 proofs: reaching Mengzhou in Chapter IV Act I and unlocking Rover: Electro in Act II. It is not a dialogue transcript, puzzle-by-puzzle walkthrough, character tier list, or event calendar.

Current-client boundary — July 22, 2026: the endpoint is Version 3.5, “Blade of Past Resounds, Lingering Dream Hymns.” Wuthering Waves is a live-service game, and quest access can be eased or reorganized. When an old guide’s Union Level number conflicts with the requirement printed on your current quest card, use the client. The order and Version 3.5 unlock proofs below remain the safer way to diagnose progress.

Chronological route at a glance

Read the Main Quest page as a chain of locations and handoffs. Acts carry the central conflict; interludes and segues move Rover into the next act or region. An event story may sit beside that chain without becoming a required link.

Campaign block Story-first order Proof that the block is complete
Prologue and Chapter I: Jinzhou Utterance of Marvels I-II, then Acts I-VI from First Resonance through Grand Warstorm The initial Jinzhou crisis has resolved and the next continuation is no longer another numbered launch act.
Chapter I continuation A New Companion, Act VII Thaw of Eons, then Act VIII To the Shore’s End Mt. Firmament and the Black Shores have both been introduced through their own Main Quest acts.
Chapter II: Rinascita Prologue, Acts I-VII, Rust, Sword and the Sun, Acts VIII-XI, A Stranger in a Strange Land, Act XII, then Flowing Starlight in the Iris The Black Shores return has closed and the route points toward the Roya Frostlands.
Chapter III: Lahai-Roi Prologue, Acts I-V with their listed segues, ending with Beneath a Melting Night Sky and We Choose the Sky The Chapter IV route back toward Huanglong/Mengzhou is available.
Chapter IV: Mengzhou Act I The Wind Before the Storm, Act II Xuanling Sings, Storm Quelled, then The Chant of Unseen Ties Mengzhou is open, Rover: Electro is unlocked, and the Version 3.5 segue is complete.

If your Quest Log offers something later than the next row in this table, do not assume that all intervening quests were silently completed. First check if the entry is marked as a fast-track or event route. That distinction tells you if this is a progression block or a deliberate context skip.

Jinzhou has the only disputed early gate

The original launch route is straightforward until the account-level pauses. Complete the two Utterance of Marvels prologue quests, then keep the yellow Main Quest selected through First Resonance, Echoing Marche and Ominous Star. Do not leave the chain just because the map fills with blue Side Quests. Leave it when the next Main Quest explicitly asks for more Union Level.

Published records disagree about the old thresholds. The June 2024 IGN route lists Union Level 14 for Clashing Blades and 21 for Rewinding Raindrops; the current Main Quest wiki record displays Union Level 11 beside Clashing Blades. That is a versioned conflict, not a reason to grind to the largest number. Open the locked quest, read the requirement shown by the current client, and earn only the gap it actually requests.

When the gate is real, use activities that advance the account as well as the route:

  1. Claim Main Quest and Guidebook rewards first. A completed objective that has not been claimed does not help the next gate.
  2. Choose Exploration or Companion quests with visible Union EXP. These are useful bridge jobs; sweeping every blue marker is not required.
  3. Spend Waveplates on a material your active team needs. Simulation or upgrade materials turn the same account EXP into permanent campaign strength.
  4. Return as soon as the live requirement is met. The gate is a pause in the main route, not an instruction to clear Jinzhou to 100%.

The failure signal is simple: if the Main Quest card is present and prints an unmet Union Level, you have an account gate. If the card is absent, grinding account EXP may do nothing; a prior act, interlude or fast-track selection is more likely missing.

Mt. Firmament and the Black Shores belong before Rinascita

A highland settlement on the Wuthering Waves story route
A new destination is not proof that the previous chapter’s regional continuation has been played.

After Grand Warstorm, the clean route does not jump directly to the newest world map. Follow the Chapter I continuation in the order shown by the Main Quest record: A New Companion, then Act VII Thaw of Eons, then Act VIII To the Shore’s End.

Thaw of Eons is itself a chain rather than one short objective. Its route includes Dreamweaver’s Ascent, To Mt. Firmament, Truthseeker’s Pass, Road of Pilgrimage, Mianloong Chamber, The Commander of Time and Dawn of Snowstorm. Stay on that chain until the act closes. A teleport point in Mt. Firmament is only access; the completed final subquest is the story proof.

Act VIII then moves to the Black Shores through the To the Shore’s End sequence. Its listed pieces include From the Echoes of Destruction, Hidden Between the Waves, Legacy of the Lasting Night, Advance toward the Future from Today and Beyond the Shore’s End. Names can be presented as grouped steps in the client, so diagnose the route by the act title and current objective rather than by counting every subquest title from an older page.

This is the first important fast-track trap. Rinascita access can look like a cleaner next destination, but playing Chapter II first removes the Black Shores introduction that later chapters expect. Story-first players should finish Act VIII. Unlock-first players can jump, but should record Act VIII as unfinished rather than treating it as optional cleanup.

Rinascita is one chapter with two bridge segues

Chapter II, Even When Divinity Remains Silent, is long enough that its segues can resemble side stories. Keep them inside the route. Start with the prologue Through the Sea Thou Break, then follow Acts I-III:

  • The Sacred Breeze So Often Breathes
  • Veils Off in Sun or Shadow
  • What Yesterday Wept, Today Doth Sing

Old Man and the Whale is listed as an interlude around this early Rinascita block. It has its own multi-quest story and should not be confused with the numbered central act that follows. If your goal is strict release/context order, play it at that position. If your goal is only the hard Main Quest backbone, use the live Quest Log to see whether it is demanded before Act IV rather than inventing a dependency.

Continue through Acts IV-VII: The Maiden, The Defier, The Death Crier, Shadow of Glory, Flames of Heart and Dreamcatchers in the Secret Gardens. Then keep Rust, Sword and the Sun in the chain. Its Epic of the Blazing Sun sequence runs from arrival and gladiator training through the impossible trial and the summit of Septimont. The segue is doing real route work: it connects the next numbered acts.

Finish Acts VIII-XI — By Sun’s Burning Hand, By Moon’s Fated Light, The Bygone Shall Always Return and Dawn Breaks on Dark Tides — before A Stranger in a Strange Land. That segue points back to the Black Shores for Act XII Stagnant Dawn on Wastelands. Close the chapter with Flowing Starlight in the Iris. If Lahai-Roi appears while either bridge is still in the log, the later destination is an access option, not proof that Chapter II is complete.

Lahai-Roi ends with We Choose the Sky

A luminous gateway viewed from a Wuthering Waves interior
Segues are the route’s gateways. Leaving one unfinished is the common reason a later chapter feels detached.

Chapter III, To the Stars Yet to Shine, begins in the Roya Frostlands/Lahai-Roi with When the Unknown Thrums. The current quest record then places the main route in this order:

  1. Act I What Burns Beneath Frostlands
  2. Act II Ode to the Second Sunrise
  3. Act III The Star That Voyages Far
  4. Segue All That Sunlight Touches
  5. Act IV Gold Suspended in Shadows
  6. Segue Rabbit Reflected in Shades
  7. Segues The Flaming Red from Tomorrow and Wishes in the Bell
  8. Act V Starlights from Yesterdays
  9. Wishes in the Bell: Epilogue and Beneath a Melting Night Sky
  10. Segue We Choose the Sky

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration story At Dream’s Edge is recorded as a Chapter III side story at the Version 3.4 position. Keep that label intact. It may be useful patch context, but “Chapter III” in its label does not automatically make it a hard gate for Chapter IV. If the client does not require it, do not hold the permanent backbone hostage to a collaboration side story.

The route proof that matters for the next region is We Choose the Sky. If Chapter IV is missing after Act V, search the Quest Log for the remaining Chapter III segues before farming more Union Level. A missing bridge explains the gap more directly than an arbitrary account-level target.

Use Next Stop: Mengzhou as a conscious skip, not a chapter number

Version 3.5 added the Pioneer Experience function, including the Next Stop: Mengzhou event and previous Main Quest Fast Track events. That official wording explains why a new or returning account may see a path to current content before every older act is finished.

Use the fast track when the actual task is time-sensitive access: joining current friends, opening the Version 3.5 region, or reaching a live feature before its window closes. Do not use it merely because the newest quest is highlighted. The highlight answers “what is current,” not “what comes next in Rover’s chronology.”

Before accepting a fast track, make one note: the exact last quest you completed normally. After the current task is handled, return to that title in the Main Quest or Journey record and resume from the next act or segue. This prevents the most confusing state — a player who has map access to several regions but cannot tell which character introductions and chapter endings were actually played.

If story continuity is the priority, ignore Next Stop: Mengzhou until We Choose the Sky is complete. If access is the priority, accept that later dialogue can reference people, places and decisions from Chapters I-III. The fast track solves an unlock problem; it does not rewrite those earlier chapters into a different order.

In Mengzhou, Act I opens the land and Act II opens Electro Rover

The current endpoint has two separate proofs, and entering the region satisfies only the first:

  • Chapter IV Act I — The Wind Before the Storm: this is the official route into Mengzhou: Land of Xuanfang. The Version 3.5 record names Xuanfang Hold, Eastern Xuan Peaks, Western Fang Peaks and Southern Yuan Hills as the new area’s major parts.
  • Chapter IV Act II — Xuanling Sings, Storm Quelled: completing this act unlocks Rover’s Electro resonance conversion.
  • Chapter IV Segue — The Chant of Unseen Ties: complete it after Act II to close the currently listed story chain rather than stopping at the new combat form.

This order changes how you spend resources. Version 3.5 added new Echoes, three new five-piece Sonata Effects, Tacet Fields in Western Fang Peaks and Eastern Xuan Peaks, and a Tacet Discord Nest in Southern Yuan Hills. Do not spend a saved stockpile merely because those nodes appear on the map. Finish Act II, open Rover: Electro, inspect the actual Forte and recommended upgrade path in the current client, then decide whether a new set serves a character you will play.

The same update added one-click skill upgrade and improved the Resonator Ascension Planner. Use those tools to price the full change before committing Shell Credits, skill materials and Echo EXP. Reaching Mengzhou is a story checkpoint. It is not an instruction to abandon the campaign team that carried you there.

Keep one campaign team solvent while the story expands

A Resonator using a blue combat technique in Wuthering Waves
Campaign readiness comes from a working rotation and current permanent upgrades, not from building every Resonator seen in a new chapter.

A story catch-up account does not need a current tier list. It needs one team whose jobs remain clear when SOL3 difficulty rises: one Resonator who can stay on field and finish an encounter, one teammate whose Intro/Outro, coordinated attacks or buffs improve that plan, and one sustain or defensive answer that lets you learn a boss. The exact names depend on the account; the three jobs do not.

At each story wall, audit permanent power in this order:

  1. Resonator ascension and level: keep the active damage dealer at the cap available for the current phase.
  2. Weapon level: a leveled compatible weapon follows the character across every quest, while a speculative Echo roll may not.
  3. Core Forte nodes and the skills used by the real rotation: upgrade what the character presses, not every branch because a red marker exists.
  4. A functional Echo and Sonata setup: correct main functions and a coherent set are enough for the story route; perfect substats are an endgame project.
  5. Rotation proof: enter an ordinary encounter and confirm the team can build Concerto, trigger the intended Intro/Outro handoff, survive a missed dodge and repeat the sequence.

If the route is blocked by combat, change one failed proof at a time. A character dying before the rotation starts asks for sustain, level or defensive execution. A boss surviving while the team remains healthy asks for weapon, Forte, Echo or rotation damage. Randomly spreading materials across six new characters makes both diagnoses harder.

Tower of Adversity is a different player task. Its multi-team and cycle-specific demands do not define what must be built to finish the permanent story. The supplied Tower guide and character guides are also warning-marked and tied to Versions 2.4/2.6, so their exact teams and stat targets are not promoted here as Version 3.5 campaign rules.

Fix a missing marker by identifying the kind of gate

What you see Likely gate Check before grinding
The quest exists, but no yellow route is visible Tracking state Open the Quest Log, select the exact Main Quest, and use Track. Read the current objective before changing regions.
The next launch act is locked with a number Union Level Use the number printed by the current client. Older pages disagree about early thresholds.
Rinascita is available, but Mt. Firmament or Black Shores characters feel unexplained Fast-track access overtook Chapter I Return to A New Companion, Thaw of Eons and To the Shore’s End.
Lahai-Roi is available while Chapter II remains in the log A Chapter II bridge was bypassed Look for Rust, Sword and the Sun, A Stranger in a Strange Land and Flowing Starlight in the Iris.
Chapter IV is missing after the Lahai-Roi acts Chapter III segue Finish the listed post-act segues through We Choose the Sky.
Mengzhou is not reachable Version or Act I access Confirm Version 3.5 or later, then start The Wind Before the Storm normally or through the explicit Next Stop: Mengzhou fast track.
Mengzhou is open, but Rover: Electro is absent Act II is unfinished Complete Xuanling Sings, Storm Quelled. Entering the region during Act I is not enough.

The route is current when three statements are all true: Chapter IV Act I has opened Mengzhou, Act II has unlocked Rover: Electro, and The Chant of Unseen Ties no longer remains as the next listed segue. Everything else — event stories, exploration percentage, character builds and Tower teams — is a separate decision rather than a hidden requirement for this story checkpoint.
