The first faction choice is not the best place to build an ending save. The Ward-or-Noontide decision in Wishful Thinking changes the middle of the campaign, the people shooting at Skif, and several mission names. The four final outcomes are decided much later, across Subtle Matter, Dangerous Liaisons, and, for two routes, The Last Wish. Keep those two layers separate or you can replay hours of faction content without changing the ending you wanted.
This route guide gives each decision a job: one save preserves the SIRCAA split, one anchors all four endings, one separates Ward from the independent path, and one separates Strelok from Kaymanov. It also marks the Down Below warning that closes free exploration. Major campaign and ending spoilers begin immediately.
Give every manual save a different purpose
Autosaves are useful for recovering from a fight, not for managing a campaign tree. Create named manual saves before the dialogue or threshold listed below. Do not overwrite them after confirming a choice; a faction change can replace the next mission, turn a settlement hostile, or remove the conversation you needed to revisit.
- SIRCAA-BRANCH: save before committing to the final confrontation with Dubny in Wishful Thinking. Reload this only if you want to see the Ward version of the middle campaign and the Noontide/Spark version as separate routes.
- ENDING-ROOT: save in Subtle Matter before entering the pod and answering Scar. This is the efficient root for the four endings because the first ending-defining reply happens here.
- WARD-OR-ESCAPE: after choosing Life is for the living, save before the control-room decision in Dangerous Liaisons. One reply accepts the Ward; the other attempts to escape and keeps the Strelok/Kaymanov branch alive.
- DOCTOR-CHOICE: on the escape branch, save before confronting Dr. Kaymanov in The Last Wish. Fire and Lower the gun lead to different endings.
- ZONE-CLEANUP: make a separate save immediately before entering the tunnels in Down Below. This is a return point for unfinished exploration, side missions, upgrades, and supplies; it is not early enough to swap the major ending alignment already chosen.
These saves are deliberately not interchangeable. SIRCAA-BRANCH preserves route-specific missions. ENDING-ROOT preserves final outcomes. ZONE-CLEANUP preserves access to the open Zone. If you only care about seeing four endings, keep the last four. If you also want both middle-campaign perspectives, keep all five.
Reach SIRCAA without treating every early choice as permanent
The opening campaign is a long shared spine. There and Back Again teaches the Scanner, detector, artifact, anomaly, radiation, and mutant loop before Skif wakes in the Lesser Zone. From there the main journal carries the investigation through Zalissya, Garbage, Wild Island, Zaton, the Swamps, and finally SIRCAA. Individual conversations can change allies, rewards, access, and how later characters receive Skif, but the evidence set does not support calling every early choice an ending lock.

Use the journal rather than a rigid numbered list when two objectives are open together. The published walkthrough index places the Lesser Zone chain around A Tough Awakening, Behind Seven Seals, A Needle in a Haystack, and A Race Against Death, then continues through the Garbage and Wild Island investigations. Some tasks can overlap or be approached in a different order. The reliable progress test is the next main objective in Skif’s PDA, not a guide’s absolute mission number.
Before the long push into SIRCAA, repair the equipment you actually intend to keep, sell excess weight, and create a manual save outside the complex. This is useful for more than the faction split. Wishful Thinking contains a known older-guide softlock boundary around its scripted conversations. The practical failure signal is simple: if the required conversation or exit does not activate after the scene, do not continue overwriting saves inside the facility. Return to the clean pre-SIRCAA save and confirm the current client version before trying again.
Wishful Thinking changes the route before it changes the ending
The decisive scene inside Wishful Thinking puts Ward soldiers opposite Dubny and the Noontiders. Save before speaking to Dubny. The choice changes the escape from SIRCAA and establishes a working faction alignment, but later ending gates can still redirect Skif. That is why this save is for experiencing route content, not for efficiently farming the four ending cinematics.

Side with Dubny and Noontide
Choosing Dubny opens the door behind him and sends Skif toward Strider. The SIRCAA experiment still collapses, but Skif begins the non-Ward escape mission To the Last Drop of Blood. Treat the tunnels and the Data Center as an evacuation route: obtain the SIRCAA archive if you take that detour, avoid wasting ammunition on the continuing battle outside, and follow Richter’s route out.
Afterward, the journal can offer Just Like the Good Old Days and The Hornet’s Nest as ways to obtain the Emitter needed by An Invisible Threat. Check which objective is active and which Emitter is actually in inventory before crossing the map. Completing a second long route merely because another guide lists it beside the first is not useful if the mission has already advanced.
Side with the Ward
Choosing the Ward forces the fight against Dubny’s group, keeps Skif beside Dalin during the failed experiment, and starts Law and Order. This route also passes through the SIRCAA Data Center, but Korshunov becomes the commander driving the escape. When he sends Skif after the two psi-radiation sources, the Wild Island option points toward Just Like the Good Old Days and the Sphere option points toward The Hornet’s Nest.
The key diagnostic is the mission title after the SIRCAA cutscene. If the journal says To the Last Drop of Blood, you took the Dubny/Noontide exit. If it says Law and Order, you took the Ward exit. Do not infer the route from which soldiers happen to be nearby; the experiment produces chaos on both paths.
Let the Emitter show which faction route is active
An Invisible Threat is a clean route label. A Spark-aligned journal sends the Emitter to Scar at Rostok. A Ward-aligned journal sends it to the Chemical Plant. If the destination seems wrong, read the objective and faction state before walking across the Zone; the item cannot solve both deliveries at once.
- Spark delivery: take the Emitter to Scar in the southwestern part of Rostok. The handoff leads into Dawn of a New Day before The Assault on the Duga.
- Ward delivery: report at the Chemical Plant, hand over the Emitter, collect the optional Ward armor if desired, and meet Korshunov and Dalin. This version moves directly toward The Assault on the Duga.
The Duga assault has a different method for each alignment. Spark enters from a rear position and secures the communications route; the Ward attacks the checkpoint from the front and destroys the small psi installations on the wall. Both plans fail to contain Faust, and both routes converge on A Minor Incident. That convergence is important: different battle geometry does not mean the campaign has already selected a final ending.
Later, Visions of Truth again exposes the active label. Spark returns to Lab X17, uses Faust’s Pendant with the Visiograph, then defends Scar’s exit from Ward forces. The Ward version meets Dalin and Korshunov at Malachite, activates the same device, and fights Spark soldiers. Both versions finish by sending Skif toward the Red Forest and Dark Times. Use that common destination as confirmation that the routes have rejoined the late-story spine.
Build all four endings from the late decision matrix
The efficient ending plan begins inside Lab X15 during Subtle Matter. Create ENDING-ROOT before the pod conversation. The exact dialogue text matters more than the faction you favored hours earlier.
| Ending route | Subtle Matter | Dangerous Liaisons | The Last Wish | Final-route signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ward: Brave New World | Life is for the living. | I’m not your enemy. or the equivalent I’m with you. | Not used | Down Below continues to Eye of the Storm, then The Last Step. |
| Spark: Today Never Ends | Eternal spring. An earlier Ward alignment can instead expose I need more time. | [Escape] | Not used | Down Below continues to Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, then The Eternal Shining. |
| Strelok: She Will Never Be Free | Life is for the living. | [Escape] | [Fire] | The Last Wish continues to Let No One Leave Unsatisfied on Strelok’s terms. |
| Kaymanov: Project Y | Life is for the living. | [Escape] | [Lower the gun] | The Last Wish adds the Orbita detour before the final confrontation. |
Run the matrix as a small tree. From ENDING-ROOT, take the Spark reply and finish that route. Reload ENDING-ROOT, choose Life is for the living, and proceed to Dangerous Liaisons. Make WARD-OR-ESCAPE there. Accept the Ward for Brave New World; reload and choose [Escape] for the independent branch. At The Last Wish, make DOCTOR-CHOICE, then use [Fire] for Strelok and [Lower the gun] for Kaymanov.
Subtle Matter decides whether Scar still owns the plan
Inside the X15 pod, Eternal spring accepts Scar’s Shining Zone vision and establishes the Spark outcome path. Life is for the living rejects it and keeps the Ward or independent outcomes available. If Skif followed the Ward earlier, the scene can present I need more time as the Spark-compatible alternative. Use the wording visible in your current client; do not choose based only on button position.
If you reject Scar, the lab exit becomes hostile. That is a route consequence, not a failed save. Follow the objective out, let the journal advance to Dangerous Liaisons, and preserve the new manual save before speaking to Korshunov in the control room.
Dangerous Liaisons separates Ward from escape
At the second gate, I’m not your enemy or I’m with you accepts the Ward route. [Escape] refuses it. On the refusal route, Skif is imprisoned at the Chemical Plant and Escape from the Cage appears. That mission starts with the inventory removed, so use Dalin’s key, recover the stored gear before leaving, and only then cross the northern checkpoint. The mission transition to The Boundary confirms the escape succeeded.
Accepting the Ward skips the prison escape and proceeds toward The Boundary under Ward authority. The shared mission name does not erase the alignment: Down Below later changes its allies, enemies, boss sequence, and final mission according to the route carried into the Foundation.
The Last Wish exists only on the independent final branch
After rejecting both Scar’s plan and the Ward, the late campaign follows Strelok until he orders Skif to kill Dr. Kaymanov. The choice is intentionally delayed until the confrontation. [Fire] obeys Strelok. [Lower the gun] breaks from him and adds Kaymanov’s stash and the Orbita pod sequence before the Red Fortress. If The Last Wish never appears, the earlier choices already placed the run on Ward or Spark; reloading at the doctor cannot repair that.

Stop at Down Below for cleanup, not at the credits
Down Below is the operational point of no return. The game warns Skif before the tunnel drop or equivalent final-act entry. Believe the warning. Once inside, the route becomes linear toward the Foundation and its faction-specific closing missions. A save made after the warning is too late for distant side missions, traders, artifact hunting, or free movement across the earlier regions.

Use a concrete departure check instead of trying to clear every map icon:
- Resolve any active side mission whose giver or destination you still care about. Several faction and settlement tasks can become unavailable after story changes even before the final warning.
- Repair the primary weapon, backup weapon, armor, and helmet. The final route contains sustained combat and limited opportunities to return to familiar technicians.
- Carry ammunition for the weapons you actually equipped, anti-radiation treatment, healing, bandages, food, and psi protection. Do not replace ammunition with a pile of valuable loot you can no longer sell.
- Move personal keepsakes or alternate gear into a known stash and keep ZONE-CLEANUP outside the threshold. The point is a recoverable open-world state, not a perfect inventory.
- Confirm the mission log and the ally who gives the approach objective. Ward, Spark, and Strelok routes enter the Foundation with different opposition.
The available route evidence describes Down Below as a lock into the final act. A 2025 reference also reported no post-story free-roam return or New Game Plus at that time. Because the game has continued receiving patches and free quest updates, do not turn that older absence into a permanent promise. Keep the outside save even if the current menu offers a newer completion option.
Read the final-act signal before spending rare supplies
The approach through Polissya or Olympia contains route-specific enemies, but both entrances descend toward the Foundation. The strongest confirmation comes after the descent:
- Ward: the Foundation sequence keeps Korshunov and Dalin at the center of the plan. The X7 Suit leads into Eye of the Storm, followed by The Last Step.
- Spark: Skif fights through the Foundation with Spark-side allies and proceeds in the X7 Suit to Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, then The Eternal Shining.
- Strelok/Kaymanov root: the Foundation sequence destroys the STALKER Program Control Center and sends Skif with Richter toward Dr. Kaymanov. The Last Wish then determines which version of Let No One Leave Unsatisfied closes the run.
If the signal does not match the intended ending, stop before consuming more resources. Check the saved replies, not just current faction reputation. A friendly encounter hours earlier cannot substitute for the required dialogue at Subtle Matter or Dangerous Liaisons.
Use a current-client boundary for updates and added questlines
This route was checked on July 23, 2026 against the current Steam listing and official announcement history available in the evidence set. That history includes Patch 1.7.1 in December 2025, the free Stories Untold content update later that month, and the Sealed Truth questline update in April 2026. The added questlines explain why a modern journal can contain content absent from launch walkthroughs.
The late campaign choice names and branch missions above are supported by dedicated mission pages, but older screenshots and enemy placements should not be treated as exact for every later build. If a door, patrol, reward, or objective marker differs, preserve the route decision and follow the current PDA. The failure signal for this guide is not a soldier standing in a different room; it is the journal advancing to a different faction mission or the required dialogue option not appearing.
That distinction keeps the route useful without pretending the Zone is frozen at launch. Use the saves to control narrative state, the journal to control immediate navigation, and the Down Below warning to protect the open-world cleanup state.
