Do not use an original Silent Hill 2 route for the 2024 remake. The story landmarks still sound familiar, but Bloober Team expanded the town, rebuilt the apartments and hospital, added new puzzles and collectibles, and replaced fixed-camera combat with an over-the-shoulder system. If a guide sends you through the 2001 Historical Society sequence or gives you a PS2 room code, stop before spending keys or leaving the area.
This walkthrough is organized around the decisions that are expensive to undo: closing an area with collectibles still inside, consuming a key before checking a side room, steering the wrong main ending for hours, and reaching Lakeview without the New Game+ items needed for an extra ending. It covers the complete remake route from Eastern South Vale to the Ruined Hotel, with puzzle-difficulty variants, one-playthrough collectible checkpoints, and a clean five-ending NG+ reload plan. Full story and ending spoilers begin below.
Build a save ladder before the town closes behind you
The remake has no Chapter Select and no post-story free roam. A door that seals, a hole James jumps through, or a chase that ends in a new version of the map may be the real point of no return for that area. The game provides ten manual save slots, so rotating one slot per major location is more useful than repeatedly overwriting the latest red square.
Use the first eight slots as area anchors: Eastern South Vale before Wood Side, Wood Side before Apartment 201, Blue Creek before the first Pyramid Head fight, Brookhaven before the rooftop sequence, Otherworld Hospital before opening the chained box, Toluca Prison at the yard scales, the Labyrinth center before rotating the cube, and Lakeview reception before entering Room 312. Keep slot nine at the nine-square save point in the Ruined Hotel before the two Pyramid Heads. Reserve slot ten for a temporary puzzle or boss test.
If collectibles matter, track three separate categories. Memos and Strange Photos appear in the inventory, and High Contrast Mode can make both easier to see. Glimpses of the Past are environmental interactions: the game does not provide a reliable list of which ones you already triggered, and High Contrast Mode does not solve that problem. Mark each Glimpse outside the game as soon as it registers.
| Area checkpoint | Memos | Strange Photos | Glimpses | Do not leave until |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern South Vale | 18 | 2 | 5 | The jukebox is repaired, Neely’s Bar is crossed, and the Wood Side key is in hand. |
| Wood Side Apartments | 3 | 2 | 1 | All three coins are found and the optional Apartment 207 balloons are handled if wanted. |
| Blue Creek Apartments | 0 | 2 | 2 | The clock shows 9:10:15 and the stairwell Glimpse is recorded. |
| Western South Vale | 3; 4 in NG+ | 5 | 2 | The garage and bowling alley detours are complete before passing Jacks Inn. |
| Brookhaven Hospital | 13 | 2 | 5 | The three bracelets, shotgun, garden visit, and rooftop collectibles are settled. |
| Otherworld Hospital | 9 | 2 | 1 | Every chained-box branch has been searched before its corresponding lock closes it. |
| Otherworld South Vale | 2 | 1 | 1 | Neely’s Bar and the payphone route are complete before opening the tunnel gate. |
| Western South Vale revisited | 0 | 1 | 0 | The Historical Society display room is checked before the long descent. |
| Toluca Prison | 9 | 2 | 4 | Each animal section is cleared before the scales open the next one. |
| Labyrinth and Toluca Lake | 0 | 3 | 1 | The scratched-symbol side room and lakeside photo are checked before the boat. |
| Lakeview Hotel | 10 in New Game; 9 in NG+ | 2 | 3 | The figurines, Employee Section, and reception save are complete before Room 312. |
| Ruined Hotel | 1 | 2 | 1 | The final memo, photo, Glimpse, and intended ending actions are confirmed before the bosses. |
Those rows total 68 Memos, 26 Strange Photos, and 26 Glimpses in one run. New Game+ substitutes the Cryptic Letter at Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama for the Lost & Found Note in Lakeview, so the memo total still reaches 68. The three collection awards require their category to be completed in a single playthrough; a partial New Game set does not combine with a partial NG+ set.
South Vale to Blue Creek: solve for movement, not for loot
Eastern South Vale: make Neely’s Bar your route hub
Take the South Vale map from James’s car, use the forest well as the first save, and follow the trail through the graveyard and ranch. After entering town, the blood trail leads to the radio, Wooden Plank, and first combat tutorial. Do not roam without a purpose yet. The key chain that opens Wood Side begins with three objects spread around the eastern streets:
- Open the Texan Cafe register for the Neely’s Bar Coin.
- Inspect the covered jukebox inside Neely’s Bar to take one half of the record.
- Break into Groovy Music’s back room for the other record half and Vinyl Glue.
The missing jukebox button is farther south. Enter Saul Street Apartments, take the office key, work through Apartments 5 and 9, and remove the button from the bathroom wall. If this is NG+, the roof is also the first Blue Gem activation point for the UFO ending. A correct activation makes the gem react; no reaction means you are at the wrong vent or did not investigate the item from the inventory.
On Sanders Street, the Code Note points toward the optional Grand Market keypad. The finished codes are 4442 on Light, 4444 on Standard, and 4446 on Hard. The store is a supply cache, not the main route. Return to Neely’s Bar, combine both record pieces with the glue, seat the repaired record, install button 2, insert the coin, and select C-2. The resulting bar key opens the back room and the path to the Wood Side Apartments Key. Picking that key changes the weather and fills the street with enemies; run to the apartments instead of trying to clear the block.

Wood Side Apartments: three coins open one ending decision
Take the apartment map at reception and inspect the covered coin cabinet in the back office so its location is marked mentally. The Flashlight and Chute Courtyard Key are in Apartment 202. The courtyard route leads to the 2F Hallway Key, while Apartment 108 supplies the Golden Apple Handle. The handgun is in Apartment 217 after passing through 213; the key to Apartment 212 appears back near the television in 213.
Use the Golden Apple Handle in Apartment 208 to reach the safe room in 206. The dial is right 15, left 11, right 13 on Light, or right 13, left 7, right 11 on Standard and Hard. The safe yields the Man Coin and the Steel Key. The Canned Juice from the third-floor laundry dislodges the Woman Coin into the courtyard. The Snake Coin is in the stroller at the empty pool outside Apartment 116.
Return all three coins to the lobby cabinet and solve the displayed story in the number of slots provided by your puzzle difficulty. The final top slot is not flavor text: choosing Snake adds weight toward Leave, Woman favors Maria, and Man favors In Water. It is only one input in a larger score, so record the choice rather than assuming it has locked the ending. Take the Apartment 201 Key, view the handkerchief scene, pick up the Handkerchief afterward, and use the red door to enter Blue Creek.
Blue Creek Apartments: the clock is a route map
Apartment 212 contains the grandfather clock and a save point. The three marked doors open in clock-hand order:
- The Hour Hand comes from the hanging radio in Apartment 307 after moving a valve through Apartments 305, 306, and 304. Set the hour to 9.
- The Minute Hand is in the toilet behind the breakable bathroom wall in Apartment 210. Before leaving that branch, assemble the Swan Figurine from the parts in 209 and 211, balance it against the Pigeon Figurine, and take the Winged Key. Set the minute to 10.
- The Moth lock in Apartment 202 is 582 on Light, 373 on Standard, or 522 on Hard. Retrieve the last clock hand and install it at the 15-second mark.
After the clock is complete, check the second-floor stair landing for its Glimpse before using the first-floor S door. The Pyramid Head encounter is timed; survival matters more than damage. Keep the central obstacle between James and the blade, dodge only after the attack commits, and spend ammunition only if space is collapsing. The siren and retreat end the fight.
Keep Maria, the hospital, and the ending plan in one ledger
Western South Vale: choose whether Maria is a passenger or a priority
Meet Maria at the central Rosewater Park pier. If you are building the Maria ending, protect her, let her enter the optional garage, answer her motel-room conversation, speak with her near Baldwin Mansion, and inspect the interactable objects inside Heaven’s Night. If you are targeting Leave or In Water, avoid turning every detour into a Maria interaction. Repeatedly walking the wrong way until she complains is not a useful substitute; it can work against the other two scores without cleanly building the route you want.
The western street loop has two purposes. First, the garage lever at Octantis Fuels opens a collectible room near Rosewater Park. Second, Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama becomes an NG+ ending station: safe code 1887 gives the Rusted Key and the Cryptic Letter. The Jacks Inn reception safe advances the story with 0451 on Light or Standard and 0533 on Hard. Once the gate opens, collect the second Dog Key half from the Katz Street doghouse in NG+, and collect White Chrism beside Baldwin Mansion if Rebirth is active.
After the street collapse upgrades the plank to the Steel Pipe, move through Heaven’s Night, Moonlight Grove, and the Reverie Theater. Chasing Laura into Brookhaven ends the open-street phase. Make the Western South Vale save before that chase if the garage, bowling alley, or Maria interactions still need review.
Brookhaven Hospital: three bracelets are three closed loops
The hospital becomes manageable when each bracelet is treated as a separate loop returning to the Director’s Office. Start at reception. The basement key locker reads 287 on Light, 724 on Standard, and 152 on Hard. In the basement, carry the Empty Fuel Can from the Boiler Room to Storage, fill it, power the generator, and take the elevator to 2F.

Get the shotgun from the Women’s Locker Room while taking the Bent Needle. Take the key marked L1 from the Nurses’ Lounge; it opens the descent to Medical Records and the Marked Bracelet. Break the window into Examination Room 5 for the key that unlocks the first-floor Inner Ward, garden, and pool route. In the garden, NG+ players pursuing Bliss must take the Small Chest from the gazebo; combine it with the Rusted Key to create White Claudia.
For the pool bracelet, connect the Medical Tube to the Bent Needle, pull the Maintenance Key from the Pharmacy drain, drain the pool, and break the eye-marked wall for the Bloodstained Bracelet. The Nurses’ Station code is 3578 on Light and Standard or 7456 on Hard. The X-ray route resolves the D1 lock as right 4, left 37, right 12, which leads to the Filthy Bracelet.
Clean and arrange all three bracelets on the hand in the Director’s Office, then use the resulting symbols to rebuild the safe button order. The Rooftop Key begins the irreversible sequence toward Flesh Lip. Before using it, Maria-ending runs should check on Maria in C5 until her available interactions are exhausted; collectible runs should confirm the hospital count and rooftop items. Do not rely on the absence of an old map question mark as proof that the area is complete, because official patches changed several hospital door markers.
Otherworld Hospital: search a branch before its chain disappears
The chained box on 2F has a physical key and two codes. Its three trails can close after their part is resolved, so take the collectible from a branch before applying that branch’s solution. The western route leads to the surgical dummy: use the Instrument of Force on its arm and the Key of Bliss at the eye to obtain the Lapis Eye Key. The southern route provides the fixed left-lock number 1622. The eastern route powers the treatment device that reveals 9659 for the right keypad.
Opening all three locks produces the -1 Elevator Button. In the basement, take the Copper Ring; upstairs, take the Lead Ring from the Doctors’ Lounge. The optional pharmacy quiz box uses answers 2, 3, 1, but it holds supplies rather than a route key. Fit both rings to the Lady of the Door, collect the stairwell memo, and prepare for the chase to the elevator. Fighting during this run is a delay, not progress.
Otherworld South Vale: the map offers two crossings, not two chapters
Move from the hospital through Heaven’s Night and into eastern South Vale. At the chasm near Happy Burger, either the restaurant or the warehouse can reconnect the route; choose the one that matches the supplies and collectibles you still need. Neely’s Bar is the decisive stop. Reading the message above the jukebox adds weight toward In Water, while ignoring it avoids that nudge. Inspect the map for the Glimpse, then leave through the rear rooms.
The ringing payphone on Katz Street supplies the letter and Wrench. The Wrench opens the gate beyond north Neely Street and returns James to the foggy version of town. Save before the tunnel if the bar message, street photo, or memo count is uncertain.
Prison and Labyrinth: finish one mechanism before opening the next
Historical Society and Toluca Prison: let the scales define the order
At Rosewater Park, recover the Historical Society Key from the ground after the Angela scene. Inside the museum, NG+ Rebirth runs must take the Obsidian Goblet from the wall niche in the main exhibition hall. The descent eventually traps James in the insect room. Its keypad is randomized, but not arbitrary: the answer is one permutation of 2, 3, and 9. Try 239, 293, 329, 392, 923, or 932 until the door opens. Any guide presenting one of those as universal is hiding the random step.
In Toluca Prison, take the Heaviest Weight from the chapel and return to the yard after every animal section. Use the scales as the hub:
- Serpent: put the Small Weight on the left pan and the Heaviest on the right. In the Witness Room, flip the generator switches in this order: 4-5-2-1-3 on Light; 6-4-5-1-3-2 on Standard; 4-5-2-1-3-6-7 on Hard. Push the breaker only after every switch is up and the dial reaches red. Take the Medium Weight and retrieve the Armory Key on the exit route.
- Ox: place Small plus Heaviest on the left and Medium on the right. The Guardroom leads to the Block D Key; D5 holds the Shiv Key; C4 leads through the showers to the Heavy Weight.
- Boar: place Small alone on the left and all current heavier weights on the right. Cross the visitation rooms, take the Upper Floor Key from the infirmary, and type SICK on the Warden’s Office typewriter for the Light Weight.
- Dove: leave Medium on the right and place the remaining weights on the left. The basement path eventually yields the Lightest Weight.
Back at the yard, balance the set for the Execution Lever and move to the gallows. The required rope is not a fixed number. Match each first poem to its second half, then choose one of the accounts whose motive makes the person innocent or justified under the puzzle’s wording. There are two acceptable candidates in a given layout. Your selection also touches the ending system: choosing a poem associated with Eddie or Angela can favor Leave and In Water, while the James-associated reading can favor Maria. Solve the presented text instead of copying a rope number from another run.
The Labyrinth: reset your orientation at the cube
After Abstract Daddy, the Labyrinth center becomes the only stable reference point. Use a fresh save there and treat the rotating cube as a selector, not a maze you should memorize in world coordinates.
- Upward triangle with a cross below: enters the Rotten Area. Follow the blood trail, collect the Wick, Gas, and Broken Lighter, combine them, and ignite the cage’s suspension rope.
- Double cross with two circles below: enters the Desolate/Flooded Area. Descend ladder II, loop through ladder III for the Small Key, open the handcuffed gate, and continue through ladders IV and V for the Wirecutter. Cut the flooded-level fence to return.
- Scratched-out symbol: opens a small optional route containing a Strange Photo. Do this before selecting the final area.
- Downward triangle with a cross below: enters the Ruined Area and its timed combat rooms. It is the last normal cube route.
Return to Maria’s room after each Labyrinth section if you are deliberately building the Maria ending. After the Ruined Area, use the Great Knife only to pass the obstructing corridor, then leave it behind and climb toward the cemetery. Eddie’s arena rewards listening: track his movement through sound and fog, dodge the shotgun blast before closing distance, and do not reload in the open. Once the fight is over, take the lakeside save and collect the photo behind the building before boarding the boat.

Lakeview is the cleanup gate, not just the final dungeon
After rowing toward the light, NG+ UFO runs must investigate the Blue Gem on the pier before entering the hotel. Inside, collect the Room 312 and Ornamental Keys at reception, then open the lobby music box so the three missing figurine positions are visible. Keep a reception save before the route branches.
The Sunrise Wing route begins with the Reading Room books. Arrange them by the shelf’s animal and wing clues to open the concealed compartment. The Room 205 vanity route leads to the Employee Elevator Key; the briefcase phrase is DARK WISH on Light, DEED DONE on Standard, or LOVE LUST on Hard. In Room 202, repair the broken mirror and choose an apple. Rotten supports Leave/In Water; Ripe supports Maria. The completed mirror places the Snow White Figurine in Room 201.
The Conference Room note points to Room 107 and the Fireplace Key. Opening the fireplace triggers a Mandarin encounter and yields the Cinderella Figurine. If supplies are low, create space first and use the room geometry; do not stand beside the fireplace trying to finish a reload. The Employee Elevator accepts James only after his carried equipment is stored. Treat the cabinet as a temporary inventory boundary, not a loss. In the employee basement, route the Pump Valve to reach the boiler and Venus Tears Bar, where the Little Mermaid Figurine completes the set.

The gem box in the Manager’s Office reconstructs the Break Room safe clue, but the safe itself is fixed at 7414. It contains the Video Tape and Basement Key. Once the three figurines are in the music box, the solution produces the 3F Corridor Key. This is the most valuable reload point in NG+: save at reception immediately after receiving that key.
Before Room 312 on a normal New Game, verify the hotel count and take the Lost & Found Note. In NG+, that note is replaced by the Lost Memories book for Rebirth. Room 312 plays the tape and moves the hotel into its ruined state; standard collectible cleanup in the intact hotel is over.
Steer Leave, Maria, or In Water without trusting one last choice
The three main endings use accumulated weights rather than one final dialogue box. The coin, Maria behavior, James’s health pattern, optional interactions, gallows interpretation, hotel apple, egg door, and hallway behavior all contribute. A late save can adjust a close result, but it cannot guarantee that one door choice will erase an entire playthrough.
Leave
Play James as someone trying to survive and still focused on Mary. Examine Mary’s letter or photo during the run, heal red health promptly, avoid excessive killing and stomping, choose the Snake at the coin cabinet, do not farm interactions with Maria, choose the rotten apple, and favor the Rust-Colored Egg door. Let Mary’s final hallway speech finish. These are reinforcing actions, not a promise that every single one is mandatory.
Maria
Keep attention on Maria rather than Mary’s personal items. Choose the Woman coin, protect Maria from damage, complete her Western South Vale interactions, revisit her hospital room while the interactions remain available, and return to her Labyrinth room after each region. Use the ripe apple, take the Scarlet Egg door, and leave the final hallway before the speech finishes. Do not deliberately get Maria hurt while trying to trigger comments; damage works against this route.
In Water
Build a reckless, Mary-focused pattern. Examine Mary’s items and Angela’s Knife, allow James to remain at low-health cross status for a meaningful stretch, attack and stomp more enemies, use the Man coin, read the Otherworld Neely’s Bar message, choose the rotten apple, and kill the three defenseless monsters in the Ruined Hotel. Use the Rust-Colored Egg door and listen to the final speech. Keep a survivable margin during bosses: a low-health ending route does not require throwing away the save.
At the Ruined Hotel, collect the Burned Note, the last photo, and the final Glimpse before the nine-square save point. After the two Pyramid Heads, insert both eggs, choose the intended door, and decide whether to hear the whole corridor speech. That sequence is the last practical steering window. If the result is not the expected main ending, reload the final save and change only the remaining late factors; if the accumulated score is not close enough, the honest fix is another run with a consistent behavior plan.
Turn one NG+ arrival at Lakeview into five endings
New Game+ adds five endings: Rebirth, Dog, UFO, Bliss, and Stillness. Stillness appears only after the account has already earned In Water. Collect every required object in the same NG+ run, then use the Lakeview reception save to branch.
- Rebirth: take Crimson Ceremony from the northeastern graveyard shore, White Chrism near Baldwin Mansion, the Obsidian Goblet in the Historical Society, and Lost Memories in Lakeview’s Lost & Found room.
- Dog: take the first Broken Key Part from the Pet Center storeroom in Eastern South Vale and the second from the Katz Street doghouse after Jacks Inn. Combine them into the Dog Key.
- UFO: take the Blue Gem from The Jewellers and investigate it at the Saul Street Apartments roof, the Rosewater Park pier, the Lakeview arrival pier, and finally Room 312. Confirm the reaction at each earlier point.
- Bliss: open the NG+ bowling-alley safe with 1887, take the Rusted Key, collect the Small Chest from Brookhaven’s garden gazebo, and combine them into White Claudia.
- Stillness: after previously earning In Water, break the rear window of the green car beyond the opening tunnel for the Key of Sorrow. In the Ruined Hotel Manager’s Office, use that key and dial right 3, left 1, right 4 to take the Toluca Postcard.
After the music box gives you the 3F Corridor Key, save at Lakeview reception and follow this reload order:
- Open the Observation Room with the Dog Key for Dog.
- Reload reception, enter Room 312, and investigate the Blue Gem for UFO.
- Reload reception, use White Claudia in Room 312, then play the Video Tape for Bliss.
- Reload reception, play the tape normally, keep all four Rebirth items, skip the Toluca Postcard, and finish the bosses for Rebirth.
- Reload the reception save again, play the tape, take the Toluca Postcard in the Ruined Hotel, and finish for Stillness. The postcard overrides the collected Rebirth set.
This five-ending fork does not also manufacture the two main endings you missed on the first run. Leave, Maria, and In Water depend on behavior accumulated much earlier. PC debugging tools can edit those internal values, but that is an unsupported modification, not part of this route, and it is unnecessary for legitimate NG+ ending cleanup.
Read the failure signal before replaying an hour
- A keypad rejects a published code: confirm the remake, current puzzle difficulty, and whether the puzzle is randomized. The Historical Society bug room is a 2/3/9 permutation, while many hospital and apartment locks have fixed difficulty variants.
- A mapped door still looks wrong: trust the current interaction prompt and inspect both sides. Official patches repaired multiple Brookhaven, prison, and South Vale markers; an old screenshot can preserve a launch-state error.
- A collectible total is short: compare the current area’s ledger before crossing its hard exit. Memos and photos can be inventoried; Glimpses require your external record. Reload the nearest rotating save rather than hoping NG+ merges the missing item.
- The chained box route is blocked: opening a lock can close its trail. Reload the Otherworld Hospital anchor and collect that branch before applying its key or code.
- The Labyrinth seems to repeat: return to the cube, identify the displayed symbol, and finish only the corresponding key chain. Wandering by compass direction is less reliable than treating the center as a reset.
- An NG+ ending does not trigger: check the visible item and interaction chain. UFO needs all four Blue Gem uses; Bliss needs White Claudia used before the tape; Stillness needs a prior In Water completion plus the postcard; Rebirth loses priority if the postcard is carried.
- The wrong main ending appears: do not blame only the egg door. Review health behavior, coin choice, Maria interactions, personal-item inspections, gallows interpretation, apple, defenseless monsters, and hallway speech as one accumulated record.
A reliable run is not the one that opens every lock from memory. It is the one that can explain what the current room changes, which missable category is still active, where the last reversible save sits, and which ending behavior the next action reinforces. With that record, Silent Hill’s fog can hide the road without hiding your progress.
