God of War Ragnarok Story Route: When to Explore Every Realm

Kratos overlooking a sunlit realm in God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarök is designed to show you things before you can open them. Soundstone appears before every companion can use Sonic arrows, bramble survives until Sigil arrows can carry flame, gold cracks and air vents wait for the Draupnir Spear, and several encounters do not exist until the story is over. Treating each first visit as a 100% sweep turns the campaign into repeated searches for tools the game has not given you.

The efficient first-playthrough route is to clear what your current toolset can solve, complete the side story that naturally belongs to the companion beside you, and leave a realm when the next obstacle is a different color rather than a missed path. All completion-relevant Favors and collectibles remain available after the story. The real routing question is therefore not “Can I miss this forever?” but “Will doing this now improve the next chapter enough to justify the detour?”

Spoiler boundary: the article names Path quests, unlockable areas, Favors, and postgame activities. It avoids explaining the ending, but the late-game routing section necessarily reveals when certain realms and bosses become available.

The campaign has 17 turns, but only eight change your map

The Path contains 17 story quests before the post-story Beyond Ragnarök objective. Pages that place “Alfheim Exploration,” “Midgard Exploration,” or another intermission between them are offering sensible cleanup windows, not extra Path chapters. Use those windows only when the preceding mission gave you a new tool, companion, or region.

Story checkpoint What changed Best routing decision
The Quest for Tyr Sonic arrows, the compass, and the Bay of Bounty branch Take the first solvable Nornir chests and begin In Service of Asgard; do not chase vents or simultaneous spear totems.
Groa’s Secret The Canyon and Barrens open after the Temple of Light Complete Secret of the Sands if you want a clean first Alfheim loop. Save the Forbidden Sands for a later return.
The Reckoning Freya, Sigil arrows, enchanted chisel access, River Delta, and day/night routes Run one River Delta circuit for Freya’s Missing Peace and nearby Favors, then revisit Alfheim for Song of the Sands.
The Word of Fate The Lake of Nine opens and the hilt activates Berserker Gravestones Use one gravestone as a power check; do not turn the entire campaign into a boss cleanup yet.
Forging Destiny The Draupnir Spear opens gold weak points, air vents, and synchronized rune targets This is the first efficient broad revisit. Pick up Spirit of Rebellion before leaving Svartalfheim.
Reunion Hel to Pay begins after the first optional Hel-Tear is closed Close tears when a realm route passes them; they do not require a separate immediate world tour.
Creatures of Prophecy Scent of Survival opens the Vanaheim Crater If you enter the Crater, restore its river before attempting a full three-region sweep.
The Summoning The game presents its final-preparation warning Finish the optional arc you want beside the current companion, upgrade once, save, and then begin The Realms at War.

The quests between these rows still matter, but they do not justify an automatic realm-wide cleanup. Old Friends, The Lost Sanctuary, The Runaway, Into the Fire, Unleashing Hel, Unlocking the Mask, and Hunting for Solace are mostly directed story passages. Collect what is in front of you, check the blue Lost Items chest after major fights, and let the Path carry you to the next mechanical change.

Leave Svartalfheim with a compass, not a cleared map

Surviving Fimbulwinter teaches combat, shields, shops, realm travel, and the Lost Items chest. Its optional branches are small enough to loot on sight, but the chapter is not a model for later completion. By the time The Quest for Tyr reaches Niðavellir, the game starts placing genuine return gates in your path.

Sindri upgrades Atreus to Sonic arrows in town. Immediately use them on the green soundstone you passed near the landing and on any matching barrier on the active route. Do not mistake the nearby circular air vents for a Sonic puzzle. They belong to a different tool, and the story will bring you back to Svartalfheim when that tool exists.

The tavern is the useful fork. Speak to the musician to start In Service of Asgard, then take the compass from Sindri outside. When the boat reaches open water, the story lies to the left and the Bay of Bounty lies to the right. Both choices are valid:

  • Stay with the Path if combat still feels comfortable and you want story momentum. Grab the Yggdrasil Dew on the water and continue toward Durlin.
  • Turn into the bay if your gear is falling behind or you want the Svartalfheim character arc in its natural early position. The mining rigs in In Service of Asgard and the nearby Weight of Chains route form one coherent boat loop.
  • Stop the loop when the remaining marker needs a spear vent, a gold weak point, a simultaneous totem detonation, or an area that the story has not opened. A grey region counter is not evidence that the item is reachable now.

This is also where the map’s chest language becomes useful. A small gold-glowing chest contains Hacksilver, and a red chest is a material cache; neither advances a region’s completion counter. Open them when they are on your line or when an upgrade is close, but do not retrace a dungeon solely for one. Nornir Chests, Legendary Chests, Artifacts, Ravens, Lore, Favors, and the other named categories are the items worth recording for the later sweep.

If a boss drop is left on the floor, check the blue chest beside a smith. The game recovers missed enemy drops there. A few story-only runic attacks and shields sit in passages that later close; those items can be bought after the story and do not count as missing region collectibles. That safety net is a reason to keep moving, not a reason to skip every visible reward.

Use Alfheim’s storm as your first optional-route test

The Temple of Light in Groa’s Secret is a directed route. Search side rooms while the door is open, but do not try to turn the temple into a realm sweep. When you return to the Mystic Gateway, a new path breaks open toward The Canyon. That is the clean handoff to Secret of the Sands.

Do this Favor now if you want one substantial side route without losing the campaign’s rhythm. Speak to Sindri in The Canyon, descend through The Below, and follow the hive route until the Hafgufa is freed. The reward is not only XP and materials: removing the Barrens sandstorm makes landmarks, sled routes, collectibles, and the next return easier to read. That is a detour that improves the map you will revisit.

Do not continue from that success into an imaginary full Alfheim clear. Song of the Sands requires both Secret of the Sands and access to the Forbidden Sands, which arrives after The Reckoning. The second desert also holds Favors such as The Elven Sanctum, Freyr’s Gift, and The Desert Door. They form a later loop with the correct companion tools.

A good Alfheim record has three columns rather than dozens of copied coordinates:

  1. Solved now: visible Raven, reachable Artifact, lit brazier, or soundstone route that the current companion can operate.
  2. Return after The Reckoning: Sigil chains, enchanted-chisel doors, and the Forbidden Sands branch.
  3. Return after Forging Destiny or the story: spear targets, high-level optional fights, and anything that still shows a missing traversal tool.

That record is more reliable than following a “100% first visit” video, because the same obstacle tells you exactly which story checkpoint should replace the guesswork.

The Reckoning turns old barriers into real routes

The Reckoning is the first major exploration promotion. During the return to Freyr’s Camp, Freya introduces Sigil arrows. A Sigil can hold Frost after the axe is recalled, enlarge another Sigil, carry a Blades ignition across a gap, and destroy connected bramble bulbs. The chisel also gains access to new blue-plate routes. At the end of the quest, the boat channel south of camp opens into the River Delta.

Optional combat is most valuable when it opens the next route, supplies a needed upgrade, or completes a companion story already on your path. Official Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation screenshot via Steam.

Run the delta as a circuit instead of chasing one marker at a time. Start from Freyr’s Camp, set the Celestial Altar to day if the river is blocked, and sail toward the Cliffside Ruins. Work the rune mechanism there to open the inner waterway. From that hub, the routes to Pilgrim’s Landing, Noatun’s Garden, the Veiled Passage, and Goddess Falls can share docks and gates.

Freya’s Missing Peace is the anchor. It becomes available after The Reckoning, requires the River Delta, and uses Freya’s runes at the wedding shrine. It is safe to postpone, but doing it while Freya has just joined makes the puzzles, dialogue, and companion reward arrive together. If Lunda’s The Mysterious Orb or the spirit Favors at the river landings are already in the log, finish the ones on the same water loop instead of returning to camp between each objective.

Day and night are route states, not cosmetic settings. A bridge made from Vanaheim growth may exist in one state and retract in the other; some enemies and Favor triggers also change. Before declaring a dock unreachable, visit the nearest Celestial Altar, change the time, and read the map again. If the obstacle is still gold rock or an empty spear vent, the correct answer is Forging Destiny, not another time switch.

After this Vanaheim circuit, Alfheim becomes worth a second visit. Enter the Forbidden Sands, complete Song of the Sands to remove its storm, and group the desert Favors around the now-visible landmarks. This is a better use of the new Sigil/chisel kit than reopening every earlier realm at once.

Wait for the spear before declaring any realm finished

The Word of Fate opens the frozen Lake of Nine and gives Kratos the hilt used at Berserker Gravestones. Explore the lake by sled while it is new: Animal Instincts, Guiding Light, and Sigrun’s Curse sit naturally around its forts, wreckage, and northern routes. A gravestone can serve as an honest equipment test. If the health-bar color and incoming damage say you are underpowered, record the stone and leave; the last member of the chain cannot be reached until after the story anyway.

Midgard is a useful midgame loop, but its Berserker chain is a power test rather than a demand to defeat every marker immediately. Official Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation screenshot via Steam.

Forging Destiny is the broad-revisit checkpoint. The Draupnir Spear performs three exploration jobs that the axe and blades cannot:

  • Detonate the gold-glowing weak point on rock and ice.
  • Remain lodged in a round air vent so Kratos can use it as a swing or climbing bar.
  • Mark several tall rune totems and destroy them together with one detonation.

The return path from the forge teaches all three. Open the old Nornir Chest near the train, use vents to cross gaps, and speak with Durlin before entering the gateway to receive Spirit of Rebellion. That Favor and The Lost Treasure are efficient first spear routes because they reuse Svartalfheim passages that were visibly incomplete on the first visit.

Now choose a purpose for the wider revisit:

  • Need health, rage, or general upgrade materials: return to recorded Nornir Chests and Legendary Chests in Svartalfheim, Midgard, and Alfheim. The spear should eliminate several obvious locks in one trip.
  • Need a controlled combat upgrade: assemble both Muspelheim seed halves and complete the available Crucible trials. The region becomes reachable after Forging Destiny; its last challenges and late boss are not reasons to remain there while underleveled.
  • Want story progress: continue to Unleashing Hel and Reunion. The spear is now part of required puzzles and fights, so the campaign will keep teaching it without a compulsory cleanup tour.

During Reunion, closing the Hel-Tear on the required route starts Hel to Pay. The remaining tears are distributed across realms. Each is a defensive encounter while your companion seals the opening, so clear the enemies threatening that companion instead of treating it as a normal survival timer. Fold each tear into a realm visit; closing every one awards the combined weapon-upgrade resource.

Treat the Crater as a campaign inside the campaign

When Creatures of Prophecy ends, leave Freyr’s Camp on foot long enough for Helka’s trail to start Scent of Survival. Following it leads to a paper-boat flight and the Crater, a large optional part of Vanaheim divided into the Plains, Sinkholes, and Jungle. This is not a small collectible detour. Give it its own session or leave it for Beyond Ragnarök.

If you enter, do not sweep the dry map clockwise. First activate convenient Mystic Gateways, then work toward the Jungle dam. Approaching it begins Return of the River. Open the dam gates before attempting the Crater’s full Favor list; restored water creates boat routes and reaches areas that were genuinely blocked while the basin was dry.

Use this order inside the Crater:

  1. Follow Scent of Survival into the Plains and register the first gateways and altars you naturally pass.
  2. Move to the Jungle, ascend the dam, burn its bramble, and release the water.
  3. Return by the new river and use boats to connect Jungle, Sinkholes, and Plains objectives without crossing the same ground on foot.
  4. Switch day and night deliberately. Hunt markers, blocked vines, and some traversal lines are state-dependent.
  5. Group the five Casualty of War searches with the region that holds each half; do not make five separate realm-scale circuits.

The Crater contains dragons, powerful hunts, Nornir Chests, Artifacts, seasonal stags, and upgrade materials. Completing a portion before the finale can raise your equipment and give you more room for error. Completing all of it is not required to finish the campaign. If enemies display a much higher power level, restore the river, preserve the gateways, and return after the story rather than lowering the value of every fight through repeated deaths.

Sound Gjallarhorn only after one deliberate preparation lap

The Summoning ends at the Muspelheim gateway with an explicit chance to handle Favors before traveling to Týr’s Temple. That is the practical point of no return for the uninterrupted finale, not a permanent lock on the world. Once the next quest begins and Gjallarhorn sounds, finish the story sequence before expecting free travel again.

Use one preparation lap, not a panic-driven 100% attempt:

  1. Open the Goals screen. Choose one companion story or region arc you genuinely want before the ending. Freya’s Missing Peace, both Sands Favors, or the Crater are stronger choices than collecting unrelated gold chests.
  2. Visit a smith. Spend the rare materials already earned, upgrade the armor set you actually use, slot Amulet enchantments whose stat thresholds are active, and collect the blue Lost Items chest. At the finale staging area, Lunda also offers the level-six Fate Breaker set without a material cost if neglected gear would otherwise leave Kratos far behind.
  3. Test the build once. A nearby Berserker, Muspelheim trial, or realm tear reveals whether you can stop blue-ring attacks, answer elemental shields, and survive a missed parry. Do not grind a boss that remains several power levels above you.
  4. Create a manual save. Keep it separate from the autosaves generated inside the final sequence.
  5. Travel to Týr’s Temple. Sound Gjallarhorn only when you are ready to remain on the Path through the end of The Realms at War.

Nothing needed for the region counters or trophy cleanup is lost by proceeding. A few directed story spaces close, but counted collectibles are not trapped there. Story sections controlled by Atreus do not contribute required region collectibles. The finale is therefore an emotional and combat commitment, not a completion trap.

After the battle, clean up in dependency order

Finishing The Realms at War creates the Beyond Ragnarök Path objective and restores exploration. Some postgame activities now appear for the first time, so do not interpret a previously perfect map as current 100%.

Postgame enemies, wreckage sites, and boss routes are new work, not evidence that the first playthrough missed a permanent collectible. Official Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation screenshot via Steam.

Start with the content that changes the postgame state:

  1. A Viking Funeral: accept it from Lunda at any smith after the story, follow its Svartalfheim objectives, and complete it to see the full end credits.
  2. The Last Remnants of Asgard: this Favor begins automatically and places ten combat sites across Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, Muspelheim, Midgard, and Alfheim. Clear them while revisiting those realm maps.
  3. The Broken Prison: cross the new bridge at the Raven Tree in Niflheim. The prison route uses Draupnir bars, contains a Nornir Chest and a Relic, and exists only after the story.
  4. Unfinished global chains: close the remaining Hel-Tears, Lindwyrm rifts, Draugr Holes, flowers, stags, and Ravens as their realm markers overlap your route.
  5. Endgame bosses: finish the accessible Berserker Gravestones before returning to King’s Grave. The Niflheim encounter makes the chain postgame-only. Defend Your Valour and Gná also appear in Muspelheim only after the story; arrive with endgame gear rather than using her as the first cleanup fight.

For a low-backtracking collectible sweep, a verified community route recommends Svartalfheim → Midgard → Muspelheim → Jötunheim → Helheim → Vanaheim → Alfheim → Niflheim. It is a suggested dependency order, not a rule. Its value is that treasure maps, postgame Favors, and realm access are more likely to be resolved before their later pickups are checked.

Use the realm counter to decide when to leave. Ignore ordinary red material chests and small Hacksilver chests when diagnosing a missing percentage. If a named category remains, open that category’s checklist and search only the relevant region. If every realm shows 100% but Beyond Ragnarök remains, recheck the Favors and untracked equipment dependencies rather than replaying story-only spaces.

New Game Plus and Valhalla are different next steps

New Game Plus unlocks after the campaign is beaten on any difficulty. Equipment, weapons, the Draupnir Spear, and skills carry into the new save, but the official NG+ rules preserve story gates. Sonic and Hex arrows return only when their companions unlock them, and areas tied to those arrows or the spear remain unavailable until the corresponding point in the Path. Carrying the spear is therefore a combat advantage, not permission to complete Svartalfheim on the opening visit.

Choose NG+ when you want the campaign again with a higher level cap, new equipment, additional enchantment systems, and changed endgame fights. Do not start it as a substitute for unfinished base-save cleanup; the original Beyond Ragnarök save remains the direct place to finish its realm counters.

Valhalla uses its own roguelite-style run structure. It can be launched without importing your armor or completing a gear checklist, and each attempt builds its own temporary choices. Santa Monica Studio describes the DLC as an epilogue set after the base game’s ending and recommends finishing that story first to avoid narrative spoilers. In practical order: finish The Realms at War, complete A Viking Funeral, decide how much Beyond Ragnarök cleanup you want, then choose Valhalla for a new combat loop or NG+ for a second campaign route.
