Satisfactory Progression Guide: Build Each Phase for the Next One

A Satisfactory factory and Space Elevator beneath a flying manta

The Space Elevator can accept a delivery from a factory that is not ready for what the delivery unlocks. That is the central progression trap in Satisfactory: a crate-fed Assembler can finish a phase, reveal two new tiers, and leave you with no dependable power, no construction stock, and no line capable of feeding the next Project Assembly part.

Use each launch as a hand-off test. Before pulling the handle, make sure the current factory can keep producing its old parts while you build the next power plant, outpost, and transport link. The route below follows the five standard-cost Project Assembly phases, but its real checkpoints are coal that can restart itself, oil that cannot choke on byproducts, aluminum that recycles water without deadlocking, and a final quantum chain whose missing input can be traced.

Read the five deliveries as factory hand-offs

The HUB Terminal unlocks buildings and recipes through Milestones. The Space Elevator unlocks the next pair of Milestone tiers. Those systems overlap, but they answer different questions: the HUB asks whether you can pay for a tool; the Elevator asks whether your factory can sustain a new layer of production.

Delivery Default Elevator request What it opens Factory that should already work
Phase 1 50 Smart Plating Tiers 3 and 4 Automated iron, copper, concrete, reinforced plates, rotors, modular frames, and solid biofuel
Phase 2 1,000 Smart Plating; 1,000 Versatile Framework; 100 Automated Wiring Tiers 5 and 6 Restartable coal power, steel, Mk.3 logistics, and persistent Project Part lines
Phase 3 2,500 Versatile Framework; 500 Modular Engine; 100 Adaptive Control Unit Tiers 7 and 8 Stable oil products, Manufacturer inputs, and long-distance bulk transport
Phase 4 500 Assembly Director System; 500 Magnetic Field Generator; 250 Thermal Propulsion Rocket; 100 Nuclear Pasta Tier 9 Self-clearing aluminum and fluid systems, late components, and enough power headroom
Phase 5 1,000 Nuclear Pasta; 1,000 Biochemical Sculptor; 256 AI Expansion Server; 200 Ballistic Warp Drive Project Assembly launch Quantum production with every inherited Project Part and rare input still available

Do not read the last column as a demand for a polished megabase. Temporary machines are useful. The distinction is whether a temporary line has a known input, output, rate, and removal condition. A box-fed Assembler labeled “make some Smart Plating” is a task. A modest line that can be switched between personal storage and the Elevator is part of the factory.

Phase 1: turn the landing site into a construction supplier

Complete Tier 0 in sequence because the HUB upgrades expose the first machines one layer at a time. Place the early Smelters and Constructors as a rehearsal, not as the footprint of the eventual base. The landing site needs enough room for foundations and short manifolds, but it does not need to be beside every resource that the whole game will use.

After onboarding, prioritize three Milestones across Tiers 1 and 2:

  1. Logistics gives splitters, mergers, lifts, and the productivity display. Those are the tools that turn separate crafting machines into a readable line.
  2. Field Research gives the MAM and map access. MAM research runs beside HUB progression, so delaying it also delays inventory, movement, scanning, and alternate-recipe options.
  3. Part Assembly gives the Assembler and Smart Plating. It is the direct path to the first Elevator delivery.

Obstacle Clearing is the power-quality upgrade. Convert gathered leaves and wood into Biomass, then Solid Biofuel, and feed burner inputs from a container instead of hand-loading each generator. The fuel is still gathered rather than mined, so this is not permanent automation, but it changes the warning signal: a visible storage buffer now tells you how long the grid can run.

Give every basic material a construction branch

Separate personal construction stock from Elevator production before the first launch. Iron Plates, Iron Rods, Wire, Cable, Concrete, Reinforced Iron Plates, Rotors, and Modular Frames are both ingredients and buildings in waiting. If every unit flows into Smart Plating, the project advances while the player runs out of belts, foundations, Assemblers, and power hardware.

For each basic line, route the normal output into a storage container first or split a defined construction share before the project branch. A container that stays empty during ordinary building is not a reason to add another Miner immediately. Walk upstream:

  • If the final Constructor is starved while the Smelter is backed up, the belt or split is the bottleneck.
  • If every machine is starved, inspect Miner output, node purity, clock speed, and the first belt segment.
  • If the line is full but construction storage is empty, the project branch has priority when it should not.
  • If the grid repeatedly stops before the fuel container empties, compare consumption and maximum consumption with available capacity.

Snap the first permanent foundations to the global grid, then reserve one side or one floor for extension. This does not force a central megabase. It prevents two nearby factory blocks from meeting half a foundation out of alignment when a later belt, road, or rail corridor must connect them.

Ship Smart Plating without dismantling its ingredients

Smart Plating combines Reinforced Iron Plates and Rotors. Make the first 50 with an automated Assembler, even if its inputs come from small buffers. After the delivery, keep the Assembler and its input route. Phase 2 requests another 1,000 Smart Plating, and later Project Parts consume earlier Project Parts again. The expensive mistake is deleting the entire line because the Elevator no longer displays the first request.

Pull the Phase 1 handle only when the following can happen at the same time: the Smart Plating Assembler runs, construction containers refill, Solid Biofuel remains buffered, and there is enough inventory to establish coal power away from the starter base. That is the hand-off from gathering fuel to building infrastructure.

Phase 2: make coal a restartable utility before steel expands

Unlock Coal Power before treating the Tier 3 and 4 list as a shopping menu. Coal is the first power source whose fuel and water can be continuously supplied. It also introduces the failure pattern that later oil and aluminum systems repeat: a machine can have one input while the other arrives too slowly, and a full-looking pipe can still be badly fed at its far end.

A first block of four Coal-Powered Generators is easy to reason about. At normal clock speed each generator requests 15 coal per minute and 45 cubic meters of water per minute. Four therefore need 60 coal and 180 water per minute. A normal Coal node with a Miner Mk.1 and a Mk.1 belt can supply that coal rate; two Water Extractors can supply the water when one is underclocked to match the total. Read the live panels before using those numbers in a modified save.

Build beside deep water and move solid coal farther rather than forcing a long uphill water pipe. Put the Miner, Water Extractors, and generators on a small bootstrap grid powered by the old Biomass Burners. Fill the coal belts and water pipes while the generators are on standby. Then start the generators and connect the finished block to the main grid. Leave the bootstrap connection or its fuel nearby. After a total blackout, pumps and Miners need power before they can refill the generators that are supposed to provide power.

The generator block has passed its restart test when you can disconnect the main factory, start coal from the bootstrap circuit, see every generator receive both resources, and only then reconnect production. Adding eight more generators to a system that cannot restart turns a small outage into a remote repair trip.

Steel should remove three blockers, not become a new warehouse

After coal is stable, unlock Basic Steel Production. Use Steel Beams first for Mk.3 belts and Versatile Framework, and Steel Pipes for Automated Wiring inputs, Motors, and later components. Then take Advanced Steel Production for Miner Mk.2, Encased Industrial Beams, Stators, Motors, and Automated Wiring. The point is not to fill one container with every steel-derived item. It is to remove the current restrictions on extraction, belt throughput, and Phase 2 parts.

Keep three Project Assembly lines alive:

  • Smart Plating continues from Reinforced Iron Plates and Rotors.
  • Versatile Framework joins Modular Frames with Steel Beams.
  • Automated Wiring joins Stators with Cable.

Give each line a small output buffer, then connect it to the Elevator only after observing that its ingredients recover. If Automated Wiring empties the Cable supply used for power connections, split or enlarge Cable before increasing the Assembler clock. If Versatile Framework consumes every Modular Frame, protect a construction branch. The phase is a sustained production problem, not a race to empty the rest of the base.

FICSIT Blueprints and Logistics Mk.3 are worth unlocking before the next expansion. A small repeatable module for smelting, constructors, or dual-input Assemblers reduces placement errors even if a later Blueprint Designer can hold a larger module. Blueprints should reproduce a tested interface: labeled inputs, an output, power access, and an expansion edge. Copying an untested tangle only multiplies its fault.

Phase 3: separate oil continuity from product demand

Phase 2 unlocks Tiers 5 and 6. Take Oil Processing early because Plastic, Rubber, Circuit Boards, Computers, Heavy Modular Frames, and the Manufacturer create the next dependency wall. Build the first oil campus near the Crude Oil nodes with room for Refineries, fluid buffers, and a byproduct exit. Do not squeeze it into the iron starter simply because that is where the first storage containers are.

The key rule is that every Refinery output must have somewhere to go. Plastic or Rubber production can stop when its Heavy Oil Residue output fills. A Fuel line can stop when Polymer Resin backs up. A storage container delays that stop; it does not solve it.

Constructors and conveyor belts arranged on a factory floor in Satisfactory
Visible inputs and outputs make a line debuggable. The same rule matters more once Refineries add a second output that can block the whole process. Screenshot from the official Satisfactory Steam listing.

Start with a small, balanced oil block and give each byproduct one deliberate path: convert Heavy Oil Residue into a fuel route or Petroleum Coke, consume the result, and send only genuine excess to the AWESOME Sink when the item is sinkable. Test the block twice. First, let all main products leave and confirm continuous operation. Second, stop taking Plastic or Rubber and watch whether a controlled overflow path keeps the required power or intermediate line alive. If one output fills and every upstream machine stops, the block is not ready to scale.

Petroleum Power can provide the capacity needed for Manufacturers and trains, but keep power fuel independent from a convenience product line when possible. If the same oil chain must choose between Plastic for Computers and Fuel for the grid, a full container or an unexpected demand spike can become a power failure. A dedicated power input and visible fuel buffer make the failure boundary clear.

Build Phase 3 parts as consumers of permanent component lines

Unlock Industrial Manufacturing for the Manufacturer, Computer, Heavy Modular Frame, Modular Engine, and Adaptive Control Unit. Then work backward from the Phase 3 request:

  1. Modular Engines need Motors and Smart Plating, so the Phase 1 line is still part of the current factory.
  2. Adaptive Control Units need Automated Wiring, Circuit Boards, Heavy Modular Frames, and Computers. Its four inputs expose any neglected steel, oil, or electronics branch.
  3. Versatile Framework remains a direct request, so do not divert its entire Steel Beam or Modular Frame supply into new equipment.

Begin with one slow Manufacturer and let it reveal the actual shortage. If Computers recover slowly, inspect Circuit Boards, Cable, Plastic, and Screws before adding a second Manufacturer. If Heavy Modular Frames arrive in bursts, buffer them at the input and fix the slow component line; do not overclock the final machine and deepen every deficit.

Promote a route to rail only when the route has a stable load

Belts are easiest to inspect for one continuous nearby flow. Update 1.2 vehicle paths make tractors and trucks a more deliberate mid-distance option, and Tier 5 Logistics Mk.4 also adds Fluid Trucks and Fluid Stations. Trains become useful when two fixed sites exchange repeatable bulk loads and the rail corridor can carry future routes. Drones arrive later and suit valuable, lower-volume items over long distances.

Choose from the failure you are willing to diagnose:

  • Belt: find the lowest-tier segment, empty upstream section, or backed-up downstream machine.
  • Vehicle path: inspect route placement, station assignment, fuel or fluid handling, and the loading buffer.
  • Train: inspect station direction, timetable, signals, platform alignment, and whether round-trip capacity matches the requested rate.
  • Drone: inspect battery or fuel supply, port pairing, and whether a low-volume item has been mixed with a bulk commodity.

Rail is an interface between stable sites. Build station buffers and measure a complete round trip before trusting its average throughput. Screenshot from the official Satisfactory Steam listing.

Put an Industrial Storage Container between each train platform and its factory belt. During loading or unloading, the platform pauses its belt transfer; the buffer absorbs that interruption. Watch one full round trip with the receiving factory running. If the buffer trends downward each cycle, add route capacity or reduce demand. Adding trains blindly can create signal congestion without fixing a platform or belt bottleneck.

Phase 4: close the water loops before scaling rare parts

Phase 3 opens Tiers 7 and 8. Start with Bauxite Refinement, then build a small aluminum block that exposes every fluid direction. Alumina Solution consumes water and bauxite; Aluminum Scrap production returns water. That recycled output is valuable, but a careless loop can deadlock when fresh water fills the input network and leaves no room for returned water.

Give recycled water the easier route back into the Alumina Solution Refineries and restrict the fresh-water contribution to the amount the loop actually loses. Keep pipe junctions level and readable, avoid hiding the merge inside a floor, and let the system reach steady state before duplicating it. Underclocking a machine to match a calculated rate is safer than accepting a tiny fluid surplus that will eventually fill a pipe.

Run a blockage test: stop the Aluminum Casing or Alclad Aluminum Sheet output until downstream machines and buffers fill, then reopen it. The entire block should resume without flushing pipes. If it does not, inspect the machine whose output remains full. A Scrap Refinery with a full water output identifies a recycle problem; an Alumina Refinery with water but no bauxite identifies logistics; a Foundry with scrap but no silica identifies the solid recipe path.

Reserve Alclad Aluminum Sheets for Mk.5 belts and equipment before consuming all aluminum in project chains. Reserve Aluminum Casings for Blenders, Radio Control Units, Batteries, and later parts. The construction branches are small compared with Project Assembly demand, but losing them can halt the expansion meant to solve that demand.

Nuclear power is a choice, not a Phase 4 prerequisite

Tier 8 includes Nuclear Power, but the standard Project Assembly path does not require a running uranium plant simply because it requests Nuclear Pasta. Nuclear Pasta is produced through Particle Enrichment; nuclear electricity is an optional capacity plan with its own fuel, radiation, water, and waste obligations.

Use the power graph to decide. If Fuel Generators, geothermal sources, and storage provide enough stable headroom for Particle Accelerators, Blenders, trains, drones, and late production, finish the project with that grid. If demand is already approaching capacity and a larger fuel build would consume more scarce oil infrastructure, a properly planned nuclear system may be justified. Do not start it as a side effect of the word “Nuclear” appearing in a part name.

Make four Phase 4 lines, then audit their shared ancestors

Assembly Director Systems, Magnetic Field Generators, Thermal Propulsion Rockets, and Nuclear Pasta draw from different late machines, but their shared ancestors reach back through Computers, Heavy Modular Frames, Motors, Automated Wiring, Versatile Framework, and Smart Plating. Before scaling the final machines, place a buffer at each late component output and observe which one fails to recover.

A good Phase 4 production board can answer four questions without a calculator outside the game:

  • Which final part is currently running?
  • Which input is empty at that machine?
  • Which upstream factory owns that input?
  • Is the shortage caused by production rate, transport rate, or a blocked output?

Send the fourth delivery after each line has produced from raw inputs, not after hand-fed storage happens to contain the requested totals. Tier 9 introduces new resources and machines; it should not also require rediscovering where Phase 2 steel and wiring disappeared.

Phase 5: trace the quantum chain backward from its final machines

Tier 9 is easiest to enter from the end. The last Elevator request names four outputs: Nuclear Pasta, Biochemical Sculptor, AI Expansion Server, and Ballistic Warp Drive. Place their final machines as an empty planning row, select the recipes, and follow each missing input backward before deciding where new production belongs.

Matter Conversion opens the Converter and the Reanimated SAM, Ficsite, Diamonds, and Time Crystal chain. Quantum Encoding opens the Quantum Encoder and the dark-matter intermediates needed by the final electronics. Spatial Energy Regulation opens Singularity Cells and Ballistic Warp Drives. Peak Efficiency adds Mk.6 belts and Ficsonium options; use it when throughput or the chosen power plan benefits, not merely because it is the last item in the list.

Separate the new chain into three zones:

  1. Rare-resource conversion: SAM, Reanimated SAM, Ficsite, Diamonds, and Time Crystals. Keep these rates visible because a small rare-input interruption can idle several expensive machines.
  2. Quantum intermediates: Excited Photonic Matter, Dark Matter Residue and Crystals, Superposition Oscillators, and Neural-Quantum Processors. Pair producers with buffers so a dark-matter output cannot silently block its paired recipe.
  3. Final assembly: the four requested outputs, each labeled with the upstream component that currently limits it.

Do not sink or dismantle old Project Parts simply because the fourth delivery used them. Later recipes consume them indirectly, and the final phase still asks for 1,000 Nuclear Pasta. If a Ballistic Warp Drive line stalls, trace its ingredients until the first empty buffer; the root cause may be Smart Plating or Automated Wiring several factories away rather than a Tier 9 machine.

Somersloop production amplification can reduce the number of scarce final parts that must be manufactured upstream, but apply it where the live machine panel shows the best benefit and where the extra power demand is supportable. A limited Somersloop is not a substitute for repairing a starved input or blocked output.

Use the MAM to remove the current bottleneck

The MAM is a parallel progression system, not optional decoration. Pick up a new resource or specimen, check the tree it opens, and complete the branch that fixes a present constraint: inventory and healing for exploration, Caterium or Quartz tools for power and navigation, Power Slugs for clock control, or Alien Technology for dimensional logistics.

Hard Drives do not justify a permanent “best recipe” route. A completed analysis offers two recipes based on what the save has unlocked and allows one reroll. A recipe can reduce one material while increasing another, remove Screws from a chain, trade water for ore, or make a remote resource suddenly relevant. Judge it against the factory you have:

  • Take it now if it removes the bottleneck stopping the current Project Part.
  • Store the result if the recipe is promising but its new input is not connected.
  • Do not rebuild a working line merely because a community tier list ranks an alternative higher.
  • Recheck available recipes before building a large new component factory; this is when a different chain can save the most reconstruction.

MAM research costs must be in the player’s inventory, not only in a Dimensional Depot. If a node appears payable but the research button does not proceed, move the listed parts into inventory before diagnosing the tree.

Find the first machine whose state does not make sense

A stalled late-game factory looks complicated only when inspected from the Miner forward. Start at the requested output and move upstream one empty input at a time.

  • Final machine idle, one input empty: follow that input to its buffer. Do not touch the other three working chains.
  • Buffer empty, producer output empty: inspect the producer’s ingredients, power, recipe, and clock.
  • Producer output full: the transport or receiving side is blocked; adding production makes no difference.
  • Miner backed up, downstream starved: inspect every belt upgrade, lift, splitter, platform, and vehicle hand-off between them.
  • Refinery has a full secondary output: clear or consume that byproduct before changing the primary-input rate.
  • Aluminum restarts only after a pipe flush: the recycled-water path is losing priority or the fresh-water feed is too large.
  • Grid trips when production resumes: disconnect late factory blocks, restart the dedicated power inputs, then reconnect one block while watching maximum consumption.
  • Train delivery arrives but the factory drains between visits: measure a full round trip and platform buffer trend; the average route throughput is below demand.

Change one condition and watch a complete machine cycle or transport cycle before changing another. A belt upgrade, overclock, new train, and extra Refinery added together can hide the original fault and create three new ones.

Launch when the old factory can survive the new tier

The best moment to send an Elevator package is not the first second its counter reaches the target. Refill construction stock, confirm the power margin, let current Project Part inputs recover, and save before the launch. Then pull the handle knowing exactly which unlocked Milestone removes the next constraint.

After the fifth delivery, the same test still applies. A factory that can identify its limiting input, restart its utilities, clear its fluid outputs, and extend through a known transport interface is ready for expansion beyond Project Assembly. The cup is the reward; the durable production system is the finished route.
