Version check — July 24, 2026: this route is for the live Early Access branch after Patch 0.4.6.0. Spearhead rewired tasks, the tactical map, vendor progression, AI behavior, health feedback, and onboarding. A guide that tells you to collect rewards from Messenger or accept every job from a vendor screen is describing the pre-0.4 game.
Your first successful expedition should feel almost uneventful. The goal is not to return with the heaviest backpack or the most expensive rifle. It is to prove that you can select a current task, build a recoverable kit, reach the correct part of Lamang, survive one contact, complete the interaction, and get the result back to your locker. Repeat that loop three times before you start risking equipment you cannot replace.
Resolve the two choices that the jungle cannot fix
Choose the game mode before building a route. Joint Operations removes hostile players and is the cleaner place to learn AI, medicine, task interactions, and helicopter behavior. Warfare adds enemy PMCs and conflict-zone pressure. The map and PvE enemies still matter in Warfare, but a quiet landing zone is no longer a reliable safe assumption.
Choose a PMC with your group, not by its logo. Lamang Recovery Initiative, Mithras Security Systems, and Crimson Shield International begin from different bases, and squadmates need to belong to the same faction. If friends are starting together, settle the faction in voice chat before anyone invests in rank, vendor reputation, and regional unlocks.
Patch 0.4.6.0 adds a reworked onboarding flow, but the developer says it appears only on completely fresh accounts. Wiping an existing character does not make that version of onboarding appear. If your fresh account receives it, finish the movement, shooting, infirmary, and map prompts before deploying. If it does not appear, use the base shooting range, infirmary, and in-game Field Manual as your substitute checklist.
Do one controls pass before leaving the base. Find the bindings for lean, stance height, fire-mode selection, magazine or weapon check, medical quick use, and tactical devices. Then confirm which inventory cells carry the quick-access icon. Belt, pocket, and rig space can be reached during an emergency; an item buried in a backpack may be present but functionally unavailable while bullets are landing.
Price the first kit as if you will lose it twice
Do not wear every edition reward at once. Build one field kit and one cheaper recovery kit. If losing the field kit would stop you from deploying again, it is too expensive for the learning run.
| Layer | Carry | Decision it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | One reliable primary, compatible magazines, and ammunition you have positively matched to the weapon | Prevents the first contact from becoming an inventory puzzle |
| Immediate medicine | Bleeding control in quick access, plus treatment for blood loss, damaged organs, and fractures appropriate to the current item descriptions | Lets you stabilize in the right order instead of using every medical item blindly |
| Sustainment | A modest food and drink reserve, or a planned resupply from the starter area | Keeps a delayed helicopter or long walk from turning into a second emergency |
| Protected space | Free room in the secure container | Gives a small task item, rare key, or irreplaceable find somewhere safer to go |
| Recovery | A spare rifle, ammunition, basic armor, and bleed control left in the locker | Makes a corpse run possible without wagering another premium loadout |
Keep weight below the point where movement becomes the problem you are trying to solve. A second rifle, full backpack of low-value clothing, and piles of unmatched ammunition can erase the stamina needed to cross an exposed road or disengage from a patrol. Early loot has to beat one of three tests: it advances the task, replaces something you spent, or is valuable enough to justify the extraction risk.

Deployment one: learn the transport loop without chasing profit
Open the tactical map and select one available Starter Town objective. Since Spearhead, available tasks appear on the map with an approximate objective area and can be accepted there. The map is divided into regions; you may physically explore beyond the current region, but its tasks unlock through progression. For this first run, crossing into a harder region is travel without a progression benefit.
Read the live briefing and any attached image before setting a waypoint. Do not substitute a 2024 coordinate because the task name looks familiar. Update 0.4 added more than 100 tasks and contracts, updated over 50 others, rebuilt locations, and changed interaction types. The correct confirmation is the current map marker, the current objective text, and the interaction prompt in your client.
Call the helicopter only after the route is marked. Transport selection is destination-first: you choose where you want to go, while the helicopter assigns a practical pickup Landing Zone (LZ) from your position. Stand close to the LZ you intend to use before requesting transport. If the assigned pickup is wrong, cancel the plan before the aircraft commits rather than sprinting across open ground with a countdown already running.
Make the first landing a reconnaissance exercise:
- Leave the LZ immediately so the helicopter noise and open ground do not hold you in one place.
- Identify one hard-cover route toward the objective and a separate route back.
- Stop before the first building or treeline that blocks sight, listen, and watch the player-visibility readout if it is present.
- Complete the map interaction; loot only what can be evaluated quickly.
- Extract when the objective is secure, even if the backpack still has empty cells.
The success condition is not a kill count. It is returning with the task state advanced and understanding how destination, pickup, approach, and extraction fit together. If you reach the wrong LZ, miss the interaction prompt, or become overloaded, that is still useful data as long as you leave before the situation becomes a gear-loss lesson.
When contact starts, reduce the number of problems
Spearhead made AI less supernaturally precise at long range, but it also made groups patrol, use cover, and support one another. Seeing one guard is evidence of a group you have not fully mapped. Hold fire until you know where a second threat could appear, where your hard cover is, and which direction remains open for disengagement.
The visibility widget introduced in Patch 0.4.2.0 is a planning aid, not an invisibility meter. Light, weather, concealment, movement, and suppressor use influence the displayed detection distance, but the developer shipped it as an experimental system and documented edge cases involving indoor shadows, light sources, vegetation, and some biomes. If the widget says you are difficult to see but a patrol has line of sight or heard the fight, believe the patrol.
Use the first shot to simplify the engagement. Fire from hard cover, avoid exposing the whole torso to confirm a hit, and move after a noisy exchange. Silent kills are more effective in 0.4, yet a suppressor does not turn a bad position into safety. If enemies begin spreading, suppressing, or approaching both sides of the cover, the correct action is to break line of sight and rebuild the fight from farther back.
Ammo choice matters more than an elaborate attachment stack. Inspect the weapon, magazine, and loaded caliber at base. In the field, read the enemy’s protection before assuming the same round will solve every area. If accurate center-mass hits repeatedly fail against armor, stop spending ammunition from the same angle: aim for exposed anatomy, change the ammunition/target match on the next run, or disengage. Do not answer every failure by holding the trigger longer.
Treat the health screen as a triage board
Gray Zone Warfare does not have one universal heal. Bleeding, depleted blood, fractures, wounds, and damaged organs are different failures. Move behind real cover before opening the health screen, then fix the condition that can end the run first.
- Stop active blood loss. A perfect surgery plan is irrelevant while blood is still leaving the body.
- Restore enough blood to function. Watch the live status indicator rather than assuming one item always restores a fixed safe amount.
- Repair mobility and weapon control. Treat broken limbs and the wounds that prevent a safe walk or stable shot.
- Treat organs when the position is secure. Surgery and suture actions take time; starting them in the same doorway where you were hit invites a second contact.
- Recheck energy, hydration, intoxication, and pain. A technically living operator can still be unfit for another compound.
Patch 0.4 improved the severity feedback in the HUD and the visual reaction to bone or organ hits. Use those signals on enemies too. A long stagger or limp is information, not a guaranteed kill. Keep the sight on the threat until it is no longer fighting, then scan for the group before moving to the body.
Patch 0.4.5.0 also expanded the recovery window by putting critically injured players into an eight-minute coma instead of immediately killing them. In a squad, that makes a rescue possible; it does not make the area safe. The rescuer should clear or suppress the threat, drag when necessary, and only then begin treatment. Two operators kneeling on the same exposed body turn one casualty into a wipe.
Deployment two: finish one task from map to locker
For the second run, choose a task whose objective lies in the region you already reconnoitered. Main Tasks advance the PMC story, Side Tasks expand Lamang’s local threads, and Contracts provide simpler repeatable work. Starter Town tasks are the exception to the majority-replayable rule, so treat their completion as a foundation rather than a farm.
Before boarding, convert the briefing into verbs. A task might ask you to locate, photograph, collect, unlock, plant, inspect, or survive. Reaching the marker is not necessarily completion. At the site, verify three states in order:
- the objective area is the one highlighted by the live map;
- the correct object or interaction prompt has registered;
- the task panel has changed before you leave.
This is where many old walkthroughs fail. Spearhead moved task acceptance to the tactical map and sends rewards directly to the locker. If a guide’s final step says to wait for a Messenger attachment, use the live interface instead. Return to base or the hand-in location named by the current task, complete it, and check the locker for the reward before preparing the next kit.
Vendor progression is no longer just a race to buy one fashionable rifle. Access to inventories is tied to rank milestones, while task completion and trading build reputation, unlock more dangerous regions, and widen the available weapons, armor, and equipment. After the second deployment, inspect what actually unlocked. Buy the item that fixes a repeated failure—medical capacity, reliable ammunition, armor coverage, or storage—rather than replacing the entire loadout because the rank number moved.
Deployment three: stack a region, not a list of search terms
The third run should combine compatible work in one area. Select objectives from the live map, compare their regions, and build a route with one outward leg and one return leg. An elimination task, a nearby inspection, and a small retrieval can share a deployment. Two objectives on opposite sides of Lamang cannot, even if a guide places them in the same “all missions” chapter.
Task names alone are a poor route. I went, I saw, I conquered and In The Trenches currently point toward Sawmill work for different vendors, while Like A Boss is a family of weapon-qualified boss tasks across several regions. The numbered Mysterious Justice entries are contracts rather than one continuous room-by-room quest. Treat each live subtitle, vendor, region, prerequisite, and objective list as part of its identity. A page written for an older task with a similar name can send you to the right landmark for the wrong interaction.
Use this routing order:
- Choose the furthest or most restrictive interaction that the current kit can safely reach.
- Add only objectives that use the same LZ corridor and do not require mutually exclusive choices.
- Reserve secure space for the smallest mission-critical object before looting valuables.
- Set an extraction trigger: objective complete, medicine below the return reserve, ammunition below one controlled contact, or weight beginning to restrict movement.
- Leave when any trigger fires. A fourth task is not progress if it costs the three already completed.

Share squad tasks only when progression lines up
Patch 0.4.5.0 allows selected tasks to be shared. The squad leader accepts the shared task, but every participant must be on the same server, have the region and vendor unlocked, and satisfy its prerequisites. A friend standing beside you is not automatically eligible for the reward.
The live exclusions matter. Tasks already in progress, long-term contracts, boss-kill tasks, Starter Town tasks, Chameleon tasks, choice tasks, and Hazardous Treasures cannot be shared through this system. If the Share option is absent, first compare those categories and each player’s prerequisites; repeatedly rebuilding the squad will not turn an excluded task into a shareable one.
Shared survival-condition tasks carry an extra risk: the task fails if a participating squad member dies in action. Decide who owns the objective, who watches the approach, and who carries the casualty equipment before entering the marked area. If one player lacks the unlock or is testing an unstable kit, run parallel personal tasks instead of forcing the whole squad into a shared failure condition.
A corpse run is a new mission, not the old one continued
When you die, stop clicking through the locker from memory. Mark the death area, identify the closest usable LZ, and build the recovery kit you deliberately saved. Its job is mobility, one defensible weapon, and enough medicine to survive the same threat. It does not need to reproduce the lost loadout.
Assume the original contact remains dangerous. AI can patrol or respawn, another squad can draw enemies across the route, and Warfare can add hostile players. Approach from a different line, scan the body from cover, recover essentials first, and leave. Filling the spare backpack beside the corpse recreates the weight and exposure that may have caused the first death.
The secure container limits the damage but does not make the run free. Put a rare key or compact task object there when the current client permits it; keep ordinary ammunition and cheap bandages in replaceable storage. If a task resets on death or does not allow its item in secure storage, obey the live task state rather than assuming the object survived because the container did.
Graduate when the loop works without heroics
You are ready to leave the first-deployments route when all of these are true:
- you can distinguish Joint Operations from Warfare and your squad shares a faction;
- you can accept a current task from the map, read its interaction verb, and verify completion before leaving;
- your bleed control is in quick access and you can identify which medical problem must be treated next;
- you can call a helicopter from the intended LZ corridor and still have a walking escape plan;
- you have completed and claimed at least one task reward from the locker;
- you can lose the equipped kit without emptying the locker or abandoning recovery;
- you know the ammunition, armor, weight, or positioning mistake behind your last failed contact.
After that checkpoint, follow the regions and vendor unlocks exposed by your own map. The next useful guide is the one for the specific task, boss weapon, or region currently visible in the 0.4.6 client—not the longest mission list you can find.
