Palia First Hours Guide: Repair the House and Start Earning Gold

A furnished Palia home plot with a completed house, garden, and outdoor work area

Do not leave your first housing plot as soon as the gate opens. In the current Palia onboarding, that plot is where the game gives you a house to repair, introduces the worktable, puts Ashura and Hodari beside the work, and sends the other skill mentors to you. If you sprint after distant map markers before that loop is working, every full backpack becomes an avoidable trip and every new recipe competes for materials you have not learned to replace.

This guide was checked on July 24, 2026, during Patch 0.204. It follows the early-game redesign introduced in Patch 0.191, not the older tutorial in which the player built the main house from scratch. Button prompts vary by platform, so the route uses menu names, quest states, and visible results instead of keyboard-only instructions.

Make the repaired house your first finish line

The opening is designed to keep you close to one solvable problem. Your plot begins with a broken-down house, and Ashura and Hodari remain there while you work. Follow that chain until the house is repaired and the plot has taught you how to place and craft decor. The exact item prompts are less important than the state change: you should have a functioning home base before you treat Kilima as an open-ended gathering map.

Use three checks before beginning a long excursion:

  1. The plot can absorb a return trip. You know where storage, the worktable, the shipping bin, the mailbox, and the Housing Menu are. Dropping a building or blueprint into the world is not the same as losing it; if something appears to vanish from the hotbar, check the Housing Menu.
  2. The opening quest has stopped holding your tools hostage. Continue Learning the Ropes until Auni, Hassian, and Einar have directly introduced their tools. Patch 0.191 deliberately moved those handoffs to the mentors, so waiting for an old mail sequence can leave you wandering without the action the quest expects.
  3. The plot has become a teaching space. Badruu and Reth now visit to teach Gardening and Cooking. Complete what they demonstrate while they are present. A garden without a watering routine and a cooking station you never use are unfinished tutorial steps, not side hobbies.

If one check fails, pin the matching opening quest and finish that branch before collecting a new page of objectives. Palia gives you freedom early, but the revised tutorial uses that freedom after it has installed the systems that make exploration efficient.

Collect tools by mentor, then test each one once

Palia’s foundational skills cover Mining and Foraging; Gardening and Cooking; Fishing and Hunting; plus Insect Catching and Furniture Making. You are not choosing a permanent class. Leveling a skill opens ideas, recipes, items, and improved tools, and the skills feed one another. Early progress is therefore about proving that each tool works, not grinding all eight to the same number.

When a mentor hands over a tool, perform the tutorial action while that objective is still pinned. Catch the bug the game points you toward, make the hunting shot, and complete the fishing interaction before accepting another detour. This creates a clean diagnostic: if the quest does not advance, you know which action failed to register. If you collect several tools and then attempt five objectives from memory, a missed pickup, wrong ammo type, empty tool charge, or unclaimed reward becomes much harder to identify.

After the first successful action, bring its output home rather than selling everything immediately. Your first examples of wood, stone, fiber, hide, fish, insects, and forage are more useful as proof of what the tool produces. Keep anything named by a pinned quest or recipe. Sell the surplus only after storage contains the materials needed for the next visible craft.

Use one table to clear the furniture lesson

Furniture Making used to create an early material sink because guides routed several decor crafts through Tish’s lesson. Patch 0.191 reduced Furniture Making 101 to one table. Craft the requested table, confirm that the quest registers it, and place it if the objective asks you to demonstrate placement. Do not reproduce an old shopping list simply because you already chopped the wood.

That smaller requirement changes the first-hours economy. The material you do not spend on extra tutorial furniture can support storage, cooking, gardening, repairs, or the next tool recipe. Decorative expansion is still a major part of Palia, but it becomes a choice after the plot is operational instead of a toll you must pay before leaving onboarding.

Kenli’s early quest has changed for the same reason. It now teaches house expansion rather than construction of the main house. If an older walkthrough tells you to wait for a blueprint that creates the first house, stop comparing step numbers. Look at the repaired house already on the plot and follow the expansion objective the current build supplies.

Turn the starter garden into a clock

The garden is the best anchor for the first repeatable loop because it creates a reason to return, a source of ingredients, and an early source of gold. Plant the seeds supplied by the current quest, water every tile that needs it, and note the visible crop state before leaving. The goal is not an optimized nine-soil layout. It is learning what an attended crop looks like and when the plot needs you again.

Build the rest of the session around that check:

  • At home, water and harvest first. A ready crop sitting on the plot cannot fund a purchase or become food.
  • Refill Focus before a gathering run if the bar is low. Food turns the same successful actions into better skill experience.
  • Choose one pinned quest plus one resource target. For example, a mentor task and the wood or stone for its next craft can share a trip.
  • Return when the backpack starts forcing discard decisions, not after it is completely jammed.
  • Store the next recipe’s inputs, cook or craft what advances the pinned task, then ship only the remainder you are willing to wait to convert into gold.

The first garden is a scheduling tool: it tells you when to return, what to cook, and which surplus can safely become gold.

Fish, insects, and hunting drops can be sold through the shipping bin or at Zeki’s General Store. Gardening can also provide early income. That does not make every catch an automatic sale. A quest request, recipe, or collection use can be more valuable than the first few coins. When the client exposes the Request Menu, it also gives you a recovery route for a resource you cannot find: request an eligible item from the server instead of abandoning the entire plan.

Read Focus as an efficiency warning

Focus is not stamina. An empty bar does not mean your axe, pick, rod, or bow is broken, and it does not stop you from gathering. It means the actions that normally award skill experience are no longer receiving the Focus benefit. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether to stay outside for one more node or return to cook.

Use the bar as a trip signal. If Focus is healthy and the backpack has space, continue the resource loop. If Focus is empty but the backpack is also nearly full, go home: cooking can solve the experience problem while storage solves the inventory problem. If Focus empties just after you leave and the pinned quest only needs one nearby interaction, finish that interaction rather than turning a short objective into another loading trip.

Do not copy an old “best food” list into the tutorial. The practical first food is the one your current Cooking lesson teaches, using ingredients you can replace without stalling the house or garden. Save complex optimization for the point when recipes, ingredient supply, and Focus capacity make the comparison meaningful.

Keep storage, sales, and requests in separate lanes

Most early inventory trouble is a classification problem. Before leaving the plot, decide what each slot is doing:

Item state Where it goes Why
Named by a pinned quest or the next visible recipe Backpack if needed now; storage otherwise Selling it can turn a one-trip objective into a repeat gathering run.
First example or unfamiliar quality of a resource Storage until you check its use The first sale is rarely worth discovering immediately that a craft, gift, or request needed it.
Replaceable surplus from fishing, insects, hunting, foraging, or crops Shipping bin or General Store This is the cleanest early conversion into gold once the next task is funded.
Eligible material you cannot currently locate Request Menu The social request system can rescue the task without changing the whole route.

The shipping bin and the store solve different timing problems. The store is useful when a purchase blocks the current trip and you want immediate control over what leaves the backpack. The bin is convenient at home when you can wait for its processing cycle. If gold appears delayed after using the bin, return to the housing plot and check the current bin guidance before assuming the sale failed.

Take Like a Bird after the plot loop works

The glider quest is a sensible end point for onboarding because it changes how you read terrain, but it should not interrupt the systems that fund it. Follow Jina’s quest direction until Like a Bird sends you to Najuma. The 0.191 requirement is 5 Softwood plus 3 Hide. Use the current objective if a later patch changes those amounts.

Gather those materials as part of normal tool practice. If you have to stop the garden, empty your food supply, and sell quest inputs to assemble five wood and three hide, the problem is not the glider cost; it is that your home loop is not yet replacing what you spend. Complete one more harvest-and-storage cycle, then deliver the materials.

After receiving the glider, test it somewhere safe and close to a return route. Its value is not just faster movement. It makes ledges, treasure approaches, and downward routes legible. The official starter guidance points new players toward Jina for this unlock, so a guide advertising a paid glider or a distant expansion shortcut is answering the wrong early-game question.

Do not mistake an open zone for the next zone

Palia’s world has expanded beyond Kilima and Bahari. The Steam page now lists Elderwood and the Royal Highlands, and the current game continues to add seasonal paths and activities. That abundance can make a new account feel behind before it has finished learning the worktable.

Elderwood is the clearest trap. Patch 0.191 says all players can access it, but the developer recommends Fine Tools and main-story progress through Rooted in Place before going too far. Accessibility is not a readiness signal. Visiting the entrance out of curiosity is different from trying to make a starter route depend on Elderwood materials, Artifacts, Relics, or its trading systems.

Use a four-part readiness check before an expansion expedition:

  • Your core tools are no longer in their makeshift phase, or the current destination explicitly supports them.
  • Your plot produces food and gold without a rescue sale after every trip.
  • Your backpack can hold the target materials without discarding quest items.
  • Your main-story journal has reached the progression named by the official patch notes.

Royal Highlands content and seasonal paths belong even later in this article’s scope. They may be visible in current marketing or the News Menu, but they do not replace the repaired-house, tool, garden, cooking, and glider chain that makes a new character self-sufficient.

Finish the first hours with a repeatable five-step loop

You are out of onboarding when the game stops dictating every movement and your next session no longer depends on remembering what broke last time. Before logging out, make the next login obvious:

  1. Water or harvest the garden and leave its next state visible.
  2. Refill Focus with a recipe whose ingredients you know how to replace.
  3. Store the exact materials for one pinned quest or tool improvement.
  4. Ship only surplus and note whether you are waiting for that gold.
  5. Pin the next task, then check the News Menu for current patch or event changes.

This route deliberately stops before optimized garden layouts, complete fish or insect locations, achievement cleanup, romance planning, and expansion progression. Those are separate player tasks with version-sensitive evidence. The first-hours job is simpler: repair the house, learn every tool through its mentor, make the plot pay for exploration, and leave with the glider path open.
