ARK Survival Ascended Beginner Route: Beach to First Metal

A new ARK Survival Ascended survivor holding a stone pick above a tropical river valley

Do not make a distant metal mountain your first objective in ARK: Survival Ascended. A new survivor becomes stable by building a short loop that can survive one bad death: a visible southern beach, a reusable bed and supply box, a creature that changes how much work one trip can do, and a nearby source of metal that can be visited without carrying the whole base.

This route is for a normal start on The Island. It does not require console commands, a paid creature, Lost Colony’s skill tree, or an imported survivor. It was checked on July 25, 2026 against the PC patch topic for client v91.23, updated July 24. ASA remains an Early Access, live-service game, and server rates can change harvest yield, taming time, maturation, damage, and progression. Treat the current spawn screen, engram panel, creature HUD, and server rules as the final authority whenever a fixed value from an older guide disagrees.

Pick the southern mistake you can afford to make

All three southern spawn groups are beginner options, but they fail differently. Choose from the next job, not from the green “easy” label alone.

South Zone 1 is the recovery-first start. It usually offers the quietest opening, an inlet with ordinary river rocks that can yield small amounts of metal, and a nearby rise for later metal scouting. Its dangerous boundary is the swamp. If your wood route keeps pulling you toward dark water, dense trees, or poor visibility, turn back; the beach is useful precisely because a threat can be seen before it reaches the bed.

South Zone 2 trades safety for a faster resource lane. Metal deposits and river rocks are closer, but the river can carry Piranhas and Sarcos, while the bordering forests can produce Raptors and Therizinosaurs. This is a good spawn only if the water crossing and the first wood patch are visibly clear. A useful resource on the far side of a predator choke is not an early-game resource.

South Zone 3 is the transport start. It has a forgiving shore, broad access to basic materials, and a future route toward Herbivore Island, where terrestrial carnivores are absent and metal and Ankylosaurus are available. That advantage arrives after you can build and protect a raft trip. Do not translate “safe island” into “safe ocean” or swim there with your tools.

Spend the first minute looking before crafting. Find fresh water that does not require a blind river crossing, a flat patch set back from the surf, two distinct exits along the beach, and enough open ground to see a charging animal. If a Spino owns the inlet, a Therizinosaur patrols the only fiber patch, or hostile creatures sit between the beach and both exits, respawn in another southern sub-zone before the camp becomes expensive. A bed is an anchor; place it where you want to return, not where the opening cutscene happened to end.

Make the camp replace a death before it tries to look permanent

Your first gathering loop should stay inside sight of the future camp. Pick loose stone from the ground, collect fiber and berries from bushes, and take only the wood and thatch needed to start. Punching a tree is an emergency action because it spends health. Craft the Stone Pick first, use it on a rock for flint, then make the Stone Hatchet. The pick favors flint and thatch; the hatchet favors stone and wood. Switching tools deliberately is faster than filling your inventory with the wrong half of every node.

Build in this order because each item closes a different failure:

  1. One tool set and more than one Spear. A Spear can break. Put the Bola and backup weapon on the hotbar rather than leaving the escape plan buried in inventory.
  2. A Campfire and a small Storage Box. Cook meat, then split hide, fiber, narcoberries, spare tools, and building materials away from the kit carried outside. A death should expose one trip, not the entire stockpile.
  3. A Hide Sleeping Bag as soon as hide permits. It is a personal, single-use respawn point. It buys one recovery, so do not confuse it with a permanent bed.
  4. A Simple Bed on foundations. A bed is reusable by the tribe, although it has a cooldown. Keep the sleeping bag for a scouting or metal route after the bed is operating.
  5. A compact shell with room for a Forge and Smithy. The first building needs sightlines, storage, and enough floor space for the metal stations. Decorative expansion can wait.

Place the box away from the exterior wall most likely to be attacked, and do not put the whole structure on the waterline. The beach gives drinking access and visibility; it does not guarantee that an aquatic or river predator will respect a thatch wall. If the same creature reaches the camp twice, solve the location or upgrade problem before adding more storage for it to destroy.

Spend levels on the next dependency, not a copied character build

There is no universal early stat spread. A solo gatherer carrying every component feels Weight pressure first. A player repeatedly surviving with a sliver of health has a Health problem. A survivor who reaches safety but runs out of Stamina before the threat disengages has a Stamina problem. Add points in response to the failure the route actually produces. On official rules, a Movement Speed plan is not available.

Engrams should follow the same rule. The useful chain is more important than owning every icon:

  • Sleeping Bag into Simple Bed for recoverable travel;
  • Bola into Bow, arrows, Mortar and Pestle, Narcotic, and Tranq Arrows for controlled knockout taming;
  • Storage, foundations, walls, and a door for a functional camp;
  • Refining Forge and Smithy at level 20 for the first metal tool loop.

Save points when the next purchase has no immediate job. A saddle for a creature you have not found, a decorative set, or a large industrial dependency does nothing for the next resource trip. In solo play you can return to the engram screen when the need appears; on a server, check tribe ownership and shared crafting before duplicating another survivor’s specialty.

Your first tame is a job interview

A tame is not early progress merely because it is nearby. Ask which repeated task it removes. The first creature should make beach safety, berries, or carrying capacity materially easier.

Candidate Hire it for Do not attempt until Failure signal
Parasaur Early transport, berry work, and nearby-threat detection You have a Bola, knockout tool, herbivore food, and a safe taming patch The Bola lands near deep water, another predator is already interested, or you cannot guard the unconscious tame
Triceratops Large berry and thatch runs, knockback, and stronger local defense You have a trap or reliable terrain, ranged torpor, and have separated it from other Trikes You are shooting into its protected front, its herd joins the fight, or the route ends at a cliff
Claimable wild baby An opportunistic ASA shortcut when the parent can be tamed or defeated safely You can handle the parent and feed and protect the baby through maturation The parent fight endangers the camp, the baby flees into threats, or you lack the food and time to raise it

Parasaur: control the ground before applying torpor

The Parasaur is vulnerable to a Bola, which roots a normal creature for a short window but does not stop it from fighting. Clear the beach section first, put the Bola on the hotbar, and approach from a direction that leaves the animal running along shore rather than into water or forest. Once trapped, move behind it for a club attempt or use the best torpor method you currently have. Put berries in the inventory after knockout and watch the live taming and torpor bars. Exact food and narcotic requirements change with level and rates.

Do not keep striking an unconscious animal. Post-knockout damage reduces taming effectiveness and therefore the bonus levels the finished tame can receive. The guard phase is part of the tame: scan both ends of the beach, keep emergency weapons ready, and be willing to abandon a bad low-level attempt if a major predator arrives.

The Parasaur earns its saddle by replacing several naked gathering walks. Its threat-detection role also gives a beach camp an early alarm, but an alarm is not a wall. If it detects danger, move the passive tames behind the structure or away from the approach instead of leaving every creature on aggressive and starting a chaotic chase.

Trike: upgrade the berry economy only after you can control a charge

A normal Bola does not hold a Trike. Its charge closes open ground quickly, its head protects the frontal approach, and nearby Trikes may assist when one is attacked. Lure a lone target into a prepared trap or shoot from terrain that has a tested exit. Do not stand on a rock without checking whether the animal can walk around or climb onto it.

The reward is a much larger berry and thatch operation plus meaningful knockback around the camp. That directly supports Narcotic crafting and later herbivore tames. A Trike is therefore a better second hire when berry throughput is the bottleneck; it is a poor first gamble when a failed charge can reach the bed and every supply box.

A wild baby is a commitment, not free bonus levels

Wild babies are an ASA-specific opportunity. A baby becomes claimable after its parent is tamed or killed, but a normal claim keeps the baby’s wild level rather than granting the bonus levels of an efficient knockout tame. It still requires food, protection, maturation time, and care. Check the adult first. Killing a useful high-level parent beside the base just to inherit a dependent baby can leave you with more work and a weaker result.

Build metal as a round trip, not a one-way expedition

The first metal goal is not a full suit of gear. It is a loop that makes the next metal trip cheaper.

Begin with the closest weak source. In South Zone 1 or 2, ordinary smooth river rocks can provide enough metal to start, even though rich nodes are better later. Bring it home to a Refining Forge rather than carrying forge materials toward an unknown mountain. The Forge unlocks at level 20 and turns raw metal into ingots while fueled. Wood is a useful early fuel when you also want charcoal for later gunpowder; Sparkpowder burns differently but does not produce charcoal. Choose for the next recipe rather than following a permanent “best fuel” rule.

The Smithy also unlocks at level 20 and requires five Metal Ingots plus ordinary beach materials. That creates a clean first target: acquire enough metal to place the Forge, smelt the Smithy requirement, then craft the Metal Pick before trying to industrialize. The metal pick improves the yield from the next proper node. A Metal Hatchet, Crossbow, armor, and saddles can follow in the order your route demands.

Run the first trip with a strict loadout:

  • food and water appropriate to the route;
  • a Stone Pick plus a spare or repair materials;
  • Bolas and a weapon for creating escape time;
  • one Hide Sleeping Bag placed before the dangerous section, not on the camp bed;
  • only the materials needed for that trip.

Scout once with a nearly empty inventory. Mark the source with ASA’s map coordinates or a ping, identify the return path, and note the landmark where the beach becomes forest, river, or steep terrain. Only then make the loaded run. If the first scout cannot return without swimming through Piranha water, passing the same Raptor spawn, or climbing terrain the pack animal cannot follow, that is not your metal route.

South Zone 1: graduate from river rocks to the nearby high ground

Use river rocks to pay for the first stations, then inspect the nearby hill or mountain for a richer source. Approach from open ground and park the working tame facing home. Harvest only until Weight begins to compromise the return. Dropping common stone can be correct when metal is the purpose of the trip; arriving home with a mixed inventory that cannot move is not a successful harvest.

South Zone 3: make Herbivore Island a planned branch

Herbivore Island offers metal, flat building ground, no terrestrial carnivores, and Ankylosaurus spawns. It is attractive precisely because several future jobs meet there, but it should be a prepared branch. Build the raft, replacement tools, food, bed supplies, storage, and a shoreline landing plan before leaving. Keep close to the intended coast and do not test the safety claim by swimming a survivor or tame across open water.

An Ankylosaurus changes the metal economy rather than merely adding another mount. It specializes in harvesting metal and reduces metal weight in its inventory by 85 percent. ASA also lets an unridden Anky auto-harvest a metal rock in front of it, and its harvest-only mode can limit unwanted materials. That is the point at which a metal node becomes a supply route. Until then, control the size of each hand-carried run.

Relocate only after the beach can replace the moving kit

A beach base is supposed to become an outpost. It has finished its job when it can manufacture the kit needed to leave and still hold a recovery set.

Stay and improve the route if fresh water is safe, the Forge and Smithy are working, the metal trip returns reliably, and the local creature traffic can be seen and diverted. Add a protected tame area, upgrade the vulnerable structure pieces, and duplicate the core tools.

Move to a new main base if every metal run crosses the same lethal choke, the camp is pinned between water and dense predator spawns, or there is no room to keep tames away from wild fights. Do not move because a distant view looks better. Move because the new site shortens a repeated resource dependency or removes a proven threat.

Prepare the move as two inventories:

  1. The settlement kit: bed materials, foundations, storage, Forge/Smithy replacements or the materials to rebuild them, and basic defensive structures.
  2. The recovery kit left behind: a bed, food, spare primitive tools, armor, Bolas, and enough materials to resume if the caravan dies.

ASA’s upgraded map and tame tracking can show a tracked creature’s location, which makes a separated mount easier to diagnose. It does not rescue an animal from a fight. Before moving a group, set follow distances deliberately, move through a tested corridor, stop after terrain transitions to let the line close, and check that the slow carrier is still present before entering the next threat area.

Use darkness to prepare the next daylight loop

Night is not a command to explore unknown forest with a torch advertising your position. Use the first dark cycle to cook meat, burn the Forge, craft Narcotic, repair tools, move excess weight into labeled storage, and prepare the exact hotbar for dawn. Place a map marker for the camp and name tames by job if that makes tracking clearer.

Before leaving again, perform one practical reset:

  • the bed is available and the sleeping bag is packed or already staged;
  • one replacement tool set remains in storage;
  • the tame carries route supplies, not every valuable item you own;
  • food, water, torpor supplies, and repair materials match the distance;
  • the return path is visible on the map and does not depend on an untested shortcut.

The beach phase is complete when a death costs time but does not erase capability: you can respawn, equip a basic kit, recover or replace the working tame, smelt another set of tools, and repeat the metal route. At that point the island opens for deliberate cave preparation, stronger transport, farming, breeding, and bosses. Before that point, another ambitious objective only stretches the same fragile supply line.
