Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Walkthrough: Story Route, Keys, and Return Trips

The Hero, Maribel, Kiefer, and Ruff together in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined

If a pedestal will not open the next destination in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, the missing step is usually not another battle. The campaign repeatedly asks you to finish a crisis in the past, inspect the restored land in the present, collect the fragment created by that change, and only then return to the Shrine of Mysteries. Treating each island as finished when its boss falls is the fastest way to lose the route.

This spoiler-forward walkthrough reduces the full story to its dependency chain: which region to clear, which return visit produces the next route item, when a party member or travel tool changes, and what state proves that you can move on. It also maps the 53 short chapter pages used by IGN to the 27 larger story stages used by another verified walkthrough, so a chapter-number mismatch does not send you to the wrong island.

Version boundary: checked July 26, 2026. The latest official notice available for this review is the April 7 update: Switch and Switch 2 version 1.2.0, PS5 version 1.003.000, Xbox version 1.0.5.0, Microsoft Store version 1.0.6.0, and Steam version 1.0.1.0. The live Journal, Tablet List, objective marker, and current patch notes outrank a fixed route if a later update changes a handoff.

The route is a state machine, not a straight road

Every major vignette has up to four states. First you assemble a colored tablet at the Shrine of Mysteries. Second you solve the region in the past. Third you revisit the same land in the present, where a changed building, ruler, mine, grave, or treasure room supplies another fragment or story item. Fourth you return to Estard or the Shrine and turn that result into the next portal.

  1. Read the Journal before leaving a region. A boss defeat can advance the crisis without completing the chapter handoff. Continue until the Journal objective changes to a present-day location, Estard, or the Shrine.
  2. Open the Tablet List when a pedestal is incomplete. Each fragment has a short location clue. Use that clue to identify a missed present-day return instead of searching every dungeon again.
  3. Revisit the restored version of the island. Ballymolloy, Rainbow Mines, Frobisher, Faraday, Alltrades, Hardlypool, Hubble, Aeolus Vale, Buccanham, and Coral Cave all demonstrate that the reward for saving the past may exist only in the present.
  4. Do not confuse a locked chest with the main route. The Thief’s Key, Magic Key, and Ultimate Key arrive at distinct campaign gates. Record the chest, continue the story, and perform one controlled return sweep after each key.
  5. Confirm the destination, not only the item. A fragment matters when it completes the named colored pedestal. If the Tablet List still shows a gap, the route is not ready even if the inventory contains several fragments of that color.

Build the first yellow tablet without wandering the whole island

The opening is longer than its combat difficulty suggests because the game is teaching how fragments are described. After Pilchard Bay, the harvest, and the first visits to Estard Castle, Kiefer gives you the Ancient Tome and the Sizzling Stone, then joins with the first Yellow Fragment. Three more complete the opening tablet:

  • Pilchard Bay: speak to Pollock at the Hero’s home for one fragment.
  • Cliffside Dwelling and Estard Underground Path: get the Trial Key from Dermot, solve the underground trial, and finish the event battle for another.
  • Estard and Rainbow Cove: help Pike collect three Empty Bottles, fill them at Rainbow Cove, and complete the water trial. This converts the current quest state, removes the Sizzling Stone for now, and grants the fourth fragment.

Return to the Shrine only after those four entries are represented in the Tablet List. The Caretaker opens the route to the middle yellow pedestal, Maribel joins, and the first past-world crisis begins. This exact pattern – story item, regional problem, present-day return, new fragment – becomes the campaign’s grammar.

The whole campaign in 27 dependency gates

The left column uses the larger story-stage grouping. The middle column shows the equivalent IGN chapter numbers. The final column is the state you should verify before moving to the next stage; it is more useful than treating a boss name as the finish line.

Story gate IGN chapter match Route state to secure
1. The Adventure Begins Chapters 1-4 Collect four Yellow Fragments around Pilchard Bay and Estard, complete the first tablet, and enter the first portal with Kiefer and Maribel.
2. The Heroes of Ballymolloy Chapter 5 Help Patrick, clear Rainbow Mines and the Tower, then return through present Ballymolloy and the present mine. Take the fragment offered after refusing the first rainbow-rock offer, recover the mine fragment, and collect the hidden Estard Castle fragment.
3. An Enormous Eruption Chapter 6 Climb Burnmont, defeat Glowering Inferno, and leave the past with the new Red and Green fragment state recorded.
4. Tears Fall on Regenstein Chapter 7 Revisit Emberdale and Burnmont in the present, collect the shop and dungeon fragments, then use the Grey route for Regenstein before continuing to the prepared Green pedestal.
5. Ruff and Ready Chapters 8-9 Free Ruff at Grotta del Sigillo, finish Hackrobat, and accept Ruff as a permanent party member. His Nose for Treasure and Whistle shortcuts become available; clear the present L’Arca returns before assembling the next red tablet.
6. Automata through the Ages Chapters 10-11 Carry Automaton Parts between Frobisher and Faraday, clear the Institute and Stronghold sequence, then complete the present-day Bobbie and Ambrose handoff for the Yellow Fragment.
7. The Roamers Chapters 12-13 Complete the Roamer ritual and Poolside Cave route. Kiefer leaves permanently at the end of this stage; collect his equipment and letters, report to King Donald, and take the Blue Fragment.
8. Restoring the Abbey Chapters 14-17 Survive Pilgrim’s Perdition, Western Cave, the Arena, and the return to Alltrades. Restore vocation access, obtain the Thief’s Key and Career Sphere, and finish the present La Bravoure branch.
9. Darkness in the Desert Chapters 18-19 Expose the false Magic Carpet, obtain the Seal of the Sands, use the Lion-Turtle-Bird-Snake order in the evil likeness, and carry Queen Neferta’s Letter of Amity to King Donald.
10. An Encounter with Aishe Chapters 20-21 Visit the present Roamer camp, pass Aishe’s guardian battle, add her to the party, then return to Alltrades so Jacqui unlocks Moonlighting.
11. An Island Underwater Chapters 22-23 Resolve Hardlypool, Highendreigh Tower, Sunken Citadel, and Wetlock. Use the Mermaid Moon to find the real Flying Carpet, then take it to Palazzo di Bulgio for the Magic Key.
12. Meeting Sir Mervyn Chapters 24-25 Bring Bulgio to the Tallest Tower, recover the Sizzling Stone, and awaken Sir Mervyn. Use the boat rather than the carpet to reach the Hardlypool whirlpool and the optional Gracos V fragment.
13. The Look of Love Chapter 26 Complete the Greenthumb Gardens and Wilted Heart time chain. The later past visit changes the people and available pickups, but earlier objects remain available; use the Missing Fragment when the route demands it.
14. Magic and Mayhem Chapter 27 Carry the Queen Mother’s Missive through Hubble, obtain the Wizz’s approval, survive the scripted unwinnable encounter, defeat the real ruler, and leave with Great Leveller learned.
15. Making a Promise to Maribel Chapters 28-29 Return home when Maribel leaves, accept her equipment, complete the Pilchard Bay memory sequence, then speak to her again and re-equip her after she returns.
16. Monsters and the Priest Chapter 30 Clear Vogograd and Mount Gora, then resolve the Worn Stone Tablet decision. Returning it to the past mayor preserves the history and can produce an extra stat seed in the present.
17. The Fate of the Cirrus Chapters 31-32 Restore the Sacred Stone at the Sanctum of the Cirrus, defeat Cumulus Vex, keep the Sacred Stone permanently, and use it to open the Pool of Piety and Coral Cave route.
18. The Ultimate Curse Chapters 33-35 Move from Buccanham through Heavy Metal Hole, Den of the Dwarves, and the Beacon. Use Glowmoss, Prism Dew, and the Sacred Stone in sequence, collect the Turquoise and Black fragments, then claim the Skystone.
19. Defeating the Demon King Chapter 36 Use the Skystone to reach Strange Shrine, take the Black Fragment, revisit the Dig Site, and defeat the first Orgodemir encounter before following the southern exit to Divine Shrine.
20. Awakening the Almighty Chapters 37-42 Complete the Torban and Cathedral of Light sequence. Before sleeping at the Cathedral, collect the Ultimate Key and every marked room reward because the story creates a long access lock.
21. Reawakening the Fire Spirit Chapter 43 Refuse the wrong answer at Buccanham, clear the dark Beacon, obtain the Conflagration Key, descend Burnmont, and leave with the Fire Amulet.
22. Restoring the Earth Spirit Chapters 44-47 Use the Sea Dragon route to reach the dark desert, earn the Royal Key, solve the Hidden Pyramid’s body-stone path, and receive the Earth Amulet.
23. Awakening the Wind Spirit Chapters 48-49 Enter Ventus Tower, obtain the Multipleximus Key and Aeolus Globe, bring the Cirrus Surplice to the spirit, and leave with the Wind Amulet.
24. Worst. Town. Ever. Chapter 50 cleanup branch Perform the Ultimate Key and fragment cleanup before committing to Nottagen. Reject the harmful town decision, clear Nottagen Cavern, and finish the Worm of Woe chain so the present settlement survives in its better state.
25. Deja Vous Chapter 51 Use the Curious Fragment to reach Rucker, clear the castle stealth sequence and Exposure Enclosure, then invite Kiefer. He remains a guest rather than rejoining the configurable battle roster.
26. A Showdown with the Demon King Chapter 52 Enter Cathedral of Blight from the Skystone, clear the four elemental side areas, and defeat the four-phase Orgodemir battle. Finish the chosen victory visits and return to Pilchard Bay for the credits.
27. Post-Game Chapter 53 and clear-file content Reload the clear file, take the Silver Fragment from Estard’s well, use the Silver pedestal for Another World, then gather the Gold fragments required for Yet Another World.

Seven state changes are more important than grinding

Give Patrick the Wooden Doll before the Tower

Maeve gives you the doll after the Rainbow Mines visit. Give it to Patrick when the game asks for confirmation. The story still advances either way, but this choice changes who arrives during the Tower confrontation and how the Maeve sequence can play. Save before the confirmation if you want to compare the scene; do not mistake the prompt for a fragment choice.

Rebuild the party when Kiefer leaves

The Roamer sequence is the real Kiefer lock, not a short guest separation. His equipment and letters are returned after the cape scene, and the next route goes through King Donald. Move any role that only Kiefer covered – durable physical pressure, an elemental slash, or emergency item use – onto the Hero, Ruff, or Maribel before starting the Alltrades gauntlet. The later Rucker reunion makes Kiefer a final-dungeon guest; it does not restore his normal party slot.

Alltrades is two unlocks separated by a crisis

The first visit does not immediately grant free class management. Progress through Pilgrim’s Perdition, Western Cave, Dungeon of Descent, the tunnel, and Allblades Arena until Jacqueline can restore vocation changing. After the abbey is safe, take the Thief’s Key from the north building in Pilgrim’s Perdition and visit present Alltrades for the Career Sphere, which moves vocation changing out of a fixed location.

Do one Thief’s Key sweep, not an aimless world tour. Open the chests your route notes already identified, then return to the main tablet. Higher-tier doors remain closed because they belong to later keys.

Aishe turns one vocation into two

The desert’s Letter of Amity leads King Donald to report the present Roamer camp. Recruit Aishe there, then go to Alltrades and speak with Jacqui. That event unlocks Moonlighting for the party. From this point, two active vocations can contribute skills, spells, stats, and perks, and both can gain proficiency together.

Pair jobs around a battle responsibility rather than two attractive names. A boss team needs repeatable healing, status recovery, group pressure, and a way to survive a worked-up enemy turn. Use the second vocation to repair the first vocation’s missing action. The Career Sphere lets you change the pairing when the next dungeon exposes a weakness; it is more efficient than grinding every base job before moving on.

Late-game encounters test a complete party rather than one overtrained attacker. Moonlighting should close role gaps before it adds more damage. Official Square Enix screenshot.

The first Magic Carpet is supposed to fail

La Bravoure hands you an apparent Magic Carpet during the desert setup. Use it once from Important Items, return to Honore when it fails, and continue the story. That failure is a quest flag, not a broken travel command. The real Flying Carpet arrives much later: after the underwater story, take the Mermaid Moon to Colette and search the cellar. It can cross low terrain and reach Palazzo di Bulgio, where the Magic Key waits on the third floor.

The Magic Key opens a small new set of doors. Keep the sweep short because the Ultimate Key will replace it as the important global cleanup tool.

Sir Mervyn requires a passenger and a stone

Do not climb the Tallest Tower alone. Speak with Bulgio at Palazzo di Bulgio, let him accompany the party, then reach the tower by Flying Carpet. The top event returns the Sizzling Stone and awakens Sir Mervyn. If the summit does nothing, check Bulgio’s guest state before repeating the tower.

The Cathedral of Light is the real no-return warning

During Awakening the Almighty, the Cathedral gives you free movement before a sleep prompt advances the story. Search the accessible rooms first and take the Ultimate Key from the basement chest. The route then blocks several familiar places for a substantial stretch. This is also the right moment to collect the marked Estard Castle and dungeon rewards that the Journal has opened.

After the lock begins, do not hunt for an alternate entrance to the Shrine. Follow the elemental-spirit chapters until the world state is restored. The Ultimate Key is for the planned cleanup and later doors; it does not cancel the story lock.

Two April patch fixes change how old advice should be read

The official April 7 notice fixes two progression bypasses. In the past Hubble region, the Grand Conjuratorium checkpoint now requires the intended item to be handed to the soldier. In the wind route, the Labyrinth of Wind can no longer be entered without its necessary item. On a current client, a closed checkpoint is not proof that the save is broken. Recheck the Queen Mother’s Missive and Wizz approval chain at Hubble, or the Aeolus Globe and Cirrus Surplice chain around Ventus Tower, before attempting the entrance again.

This matters because launch walkthroughs may describe a route that accidentally worked without setting the prerequisite flag. The patched dependency is the reliable route.

Run the four spirits as four inventory audits

After the first Orgodemir encounter, the campaign removes normal access and sends you through the spirits. Each chapter has a key item, a destination, and a proof item:

  • Fire: clear dark Buccanham and the Beacon, take the Conflagration Key, descend Burnmont, and receive the Fire Amulet.
  • Earth: travel on the Sea Dragon, earn the Royal Key in the desert, assemble the Hidden Pyramid’s stones, and receive the Earth Amulet.
  • Wind: use the Aeolus Globe to finish the tower route, obtain the Cirrus Surplice, present it at the spirit statue, and receive the Wind Amulet.
  • Water: its restoration is carried by the larger Sea Dragon and Divine Shrine sequence rather than a matching standalone dungeon in the 27-stage index. Follow the Journal handoffs instead of searching for a fourth copy of the Fire/Earth/Wind pattern.

Once the world opens again, use the Ultimate Key for a controlled cleanup, then complete Nottagen. In its present-day decision, refuse the offer that would leave the settlement worse off. Finish the mansion, hill, cavern, and Worm of Woe chain before moving to Rucker.

Rucker is new story material in Reimagined. Inspect the creature at the Altar of the Almighty repeatedly to obtain the Curious Fragment, complete the castle’s green-flame stealth route, and resolve Exposure Enclosure. Being spotted only resets the stealth position while preserving completed flames. Invite Kiefer when the group leaves; he appears as a guest in Cathedral of Blight.

The late-game Dragon Quest VII Reimagined party sailing together
By the last crossing, Aishe and Sir Mervyn have joined while Kiefer’s role has changed. Check the actual roster before assigning final vocations and equipment. Official Square Enix screenshot.

Approach Cathedral of Blight with the Skystone. The dungeon’s four corner routes supply their elemental equipment and open the descent. Orgodemir has four phases, so reserve restorative items and MP for a complete sequence rather than spending everything on the first form. After the battle, the victory lap is flexible; the required finish is Pilchard Bay, where speaking to Maribel on the boat and returning above deck leads to the credits.

The clear file deliberately returns before the final battle

Reloading a completed save places the party before Orgodemir with Sir Mervyn restored. This is the correct clear-file behavior. The new route begins at Estard’s well, where a Silver Fragment appears. Put it in the Silver pedestal below the Shrine of Mysteries to open Another World.

  1. Clear Another World and defeat the Almighty. Lightning resistance is the verified preparation cue for that fight.
  2. Collect the Gold Fragments available in the dungeon, including the fragment rewarded by the Almighty.
  3. Complete Testy Road at the Buccanham Arena for the remaining required Gold Fragment.
  4. Return to the Shrine and complete the Gold pedestal to open Yet Another World.
  5. Use the familiar-town hub to clear its switches and optional bosses, then finish the central encounter against the Almighty and the four Spirits.

Do the post-game dungeons before chasing the strictest Arena turn rewards. Their equipment, stat seeds, and high-value encounters improve the party without requiring a separate pre-Arena grind. A 100-Mini-Medal or full item-log route is a different completion task; this walkthrough only calls out medals or objects when they unlock a story dependency or post-game pedestal.

Diagnose a stopped route by what is missing

Failure signal Likely missing state Next check
A colored pedestal remains incomplete A present-day return or Estard handoff was skipped Read every missing entry in the Tablet List, then revisit the restored island named by its clue.
The next region exists but no scene starts The prior chapter ended at a boss rather than its Journal handoff Return to the last town, ruler, grave, shrine, or exit and continue until the Journal changes destination.
A locked chest resists the current key It belongs to the Magic or Ultimate Key sweep Record the room and continue. Do not treat optional treasure as a tablet blocker.
The apparent Magic Carpet does nothing The La Bravoure fake-carpet quest flag has not been reported Try it once from Important Items, then return to Honore. The real carpet comes after the Mermaid Moon sequence.
Moonlighting is unavailable after Alltrades Aishe has not joined or the follow-up Jacqui event was skipped Finish the present Roamer recruitment, then revisit Alltrades Abbey.
The Tallest Tower summit will not advance Bulgio is not accompanying the party Return to Palazzo di Bulgio, speak to him, and re-enter with the guest state active.
Grand Conjuratorium or Labyrinth of Wind is closed A required story item was bypassed in older advice Follow the patched Hubble or Ventus item chain; current versions no longer allow the old bypass.
The Shrine is inaccessible after Cathedral of Light The intended elemental-spirit world lock is active Continue Fire, Earth, and Wind objectives through their teleports. The Ultimate Key does not reopen the world.
The clear file loads before Orgodemir This is the post-game start state Ignore the repeated final objective, collect the new Silver Fragment at Estard’s well, and use the Silver pedestal.

The route is complete when the Journal has carried the party through Cathedral of Blight, the Pilchard Bay boat scene has produced the credits, and the reloaded file contains the new Silver Fragment path. Everything else – full Mini Medals, every monster family, every item-log entry, Arena turn thresholds, and level-99 farming – can be layered onto that stable clear state without confusing optional cleanup for required progression.

Evidence boundary and official credits

Game identity, AppID 2499860, Square Enix and HEXADRIVE development credits, the February 5, 2026 Steam release date, demo boundary, Moonlighting feature, and the four untouched 1920×1080 JPG screenshots were verified through the official Steam page. The past-and-present premise, reimagined systems, character material, and new Kiefer scenario were checked against the official Square Enix game page and official media kits. The current Hubble and Labyrinth progression boundary comes from Square Enix’s April 7 update notice. Chapter order, route dependencies, keys, party transitions, and post-game gates were cross-checked against readable community guides and verified walkthrough references. Neoseeker’s 167 supplied pages returned Cloudflare 403 shells, Game8 returned an HTTP 202 verification shell, and their reader fallbacks returned HTTP 401; none of those blocked captures supported article facts.
