A win is not enough to open every branch in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO. The game often asks for a different kind of win at one exact Story Map node: end the fight before its scripted cutoff, take little damage, choose the non-canon answer, or clear a second gate after the first blue path appears. Miss that distinction and the cutscene can quietly return you to the orange main line.
This guide turns the major base-game what-if routes into a cleanup plan. It was checked on August 1, 2026, after the May battle-system rebalance and the July 30 Super Limit-Breaking NEO release. Those updates matter: Bandai Namco adjusted the difficulty of some Episode Battle stages, and the latest expansion added four more Episode Battles. Fixed community timer claims are therefore less trustworthy than the objective shown by the current client.

Use the Story Map as a diagnostic screen
Open the character’s Episode Battle and move to the exact fight where the route divides. The thick orange connection is the canon story; a small blue dotted connection marks an alternate exit. Select the node and open Details. That screen is more useful than the mission title because it separates the normal clear condition from the secondary condition that creates the branch.
Before launching the fight, write down four things:
- Entry node: the named battle or decision where the blue line begins.
- Trigger type: choice, quick defeat, damage limit, special action, or survival.
- Second gate: a later opponent or choice that can still send the path back to canon.
- Proof: the next named route node, a blue connection, or the route’s completion photo—not merely a victory screen.
Run the trigger mission on the normal Episode Battle difficulty. Lower difficulty is useful for seeing the canon story, but the current written references still agree that it suppresses the ordinary alternate objective. A Dragon Orb is different: it can relax a secondary objective that is blocking a route. The January 2025 update allows difficulty changes while an Orb is in use, but that does not make an easy-mode clear proof that the alternate condition was active. Check Details again after changing either setting.
If a battle has already been cleared, enter it directly from the Story Map. Continuing from a nearby episode can preserve a canon sequence you did not intend to replay. After the fight, let the result and cutscene finish, return to the map, and inspect the outgoing line. That check prevents a failed trigger from becoming five unnecessary battles.
The base-game route board
The table focuses on the long or trophy-bearing paths most players group under “Sparking Episodes.” The game’s labeling is not perfectly uniform: some routes receive a Sparking Episode cutscene tag, while other substantial what-if chapters award their own photo collection or achievement without using that tag at the same moment. Treat the route name and map state as the reliable identifiers.
| Character and route | First gate | What keeps the branch alive |
|---|---|---|
| Goku — Side by Side | At The Earth’s Mightiest Duo, choose Go it alone. | In the Raditz follow-up, satisfy the fast “wear down” outcome. A survival result reconnects to canon; the blue line into Side by Side is the proof. |
| Goku — Pushing the Limit | Choose Work with Piccolo, then return to Rematch and Result. | Defeat Raditz before the scripted cutoff. Do not confuse reaching the end of his dialogue with the alternate win. |
| Goku — The Changing Future | At Hyperbolic Time Chamber, choose Go and help. | The choice opens the detour, but the Cell encounter can close it. Defeat Cell instead of allowing the Solar Flare outcome that returns the story to the main line. |
| Vegeta — Parental Bond | In Wind-Up Doll, defeat Android 18 quickly rather than merely lasting through the fight. | Vegeta and Trunks is a second speed gate. Let Super Trunks appear, then defeat him before the fallback; failing to finish him returns the route to canon. |
| Vegeta — Number One Spot | At Vegeta’s Wicked Heart, choose Shake off brainwashing. | If that answer is absent, replay Preparing for the World Tournament. Pressure Kid Trunks quickly while avoiding unnecessary damage, then reopen the decision. |
| Gohan — The Strongest Warrior | Use Defend Earth from the Frieza Force!. | Sources describe the hidden check as both a strong, fast performance against Frieza and a low-damage clear. Treat it as a combined test: remove the soldier quickly, keep pressure on Frieza, and protect Gohan’s health. |
| Piccolo — A Mentor’s Guidance | First clear the fast Frieza outcome in Piccolo Returns to His Birthplace and finish Piccolo’s Struggle. | Later, at Faint Unease, choose Help out Goku. Continuing to observe keeps Piccolo on his short canon route. |
| Future Trunks — Shining Hope | At Twisted World, damage and defeat Zamasu quickly enough to take the alternate exit. | Confirm the map moved into Shining Hope before fighting through its short Goku Black sequence. |
| Future Trunks — Inherited Pride | At Trunks’s Choice, select Stay in the present. | Clear Vegeta, Piccolo, and Gohan quickly in To Become Strongest in the Universe. At Father or Teamwork?, go with Vegeta. |
| Future Trunks — Embarking Toward Tomorrow | Use the same “stay in the present” entrance and clear the three-opponent training gate. | At Father or Teamwork?, go with Gohan. This is a true fork from the same setup, so replay the decision node rather than the entire Trunks saga. |
| Frieza — Frieza Force Joins the Fray | In Frieza Revived, defeat Goku and Vegeta quickly. | Frieza’s Philosophy then divides by partner choice. King Cold leads to the marked Sparking endpoint in the current written route; clear the other selectable branches too if your map or completion achievement still shows gaps. |
| Goku Black — Proof of Justice | In Act Three Begins, defeat both Goku and Vegeta instead of surviving until the script ends. | At Their Choice, the fused and unfused wins occupy different exits. Use the on-screen fusion prompt for one clear and finish without fusing for the other. |
| Jiren — True Strength | At Saiyan Rampage, choose Wait and see. | At Ultimate Climactic Battle, defeat Golden Frieza, Android 17, and Goku. Letting the dialogue resolve without the full win follows the other outcome. |

Do not use one combat plan for every hidden objective
A “defeat quickly” node and a “take little damage” node punish different mistakes. Build the attempt around the wording in Details, not around the character’s tier placement.
For a hidden speed check, shorten the first damage cycle
Charge only while the opponent is unable to punish it. Once enough Ki and Skill Stock are available, use a fast approach, move behind the target, complete one dependable rush string, and cash out with a Blast or Ultimate that actually connects. The objective is not a stylish maximum combo; it is avoiding long stretches in which the opponent is blocking, flying away, or speaking while no damage is being dealt.
The July 2026 free update adds Sparking! Boost. It spends extra Skill Stock for a stronger burst during Sparking mode, then applies a temporary penalty after the boost ends. That makes it a finisher for a timer gate, not a harmless opening buff. Activate it when the next confirmed sequence can end the required opponent. If the target survives and the penalty begins, the attempt has traded its strongest resource for a slower second cycle.
Reset early when the first exchange goes badly. A whiffed Ultimate, a long wall collision, an interrupted charge, or an unexpected transformation can consume the unknown margin. Since most route timers remain hidden and the May 2026 patch rebalanced Episode Battle difficulty, an efficient clean restart is more reliable than chasing an old exact-second claim.
For a damage check, pressure without gambling Gohan’s health
Defend Earth from the Frieza Force! illustrates why “play faster” is incomplete advice. One readable route source describes the requirement through low damage; another describes a strong, quick performance against Frieza. The practical overlap is controlled offense. Remove the Frieza Force Soldier without spending the health bar, keep Frieza occupied with attacks that recover safely, and avoid trading into an Ultimate simply to preserve combo momentum.
If the blue route fails after a fast victory, the missing variable may be damage taken rather than time. On the next attempt, keep the same opening and replace the riskiest exchange with guard, movement, or a counter. Do not change the character, difficulty, combo route, and pace together; that destroys the only comparison that can reveal which condition failed.
For a survival node, winning too early is the mistake
Several canon exits complete after dialogue or a survival window. These are the mirror image of the speed gates. If you are trying to restore the orange route after cleaning up an alternate, stop forcing a knockout. Create distance, defend, and let the scripted conversation finish. The Story Map’s Details panel should tell you whether “survive” and “defeat” are separate exits.

Five routes that fail after the blue line first appears
When a path opens and then collapses, replaying the original trigger is wasted work. Look for the next node with two outcomes.
- Parental Bond: Android 18 only grants access. Super Trunks is the retention test. Wait for the transformation, then finish the correct form quickly.
- Number One Spot: the relevant work happens before Babidi’s choice. If “Shake off brainwashing” is missing, repair the Kid Trunks result first.
- Inherited Pride and Embarking Toward Tomorrow: “Stay in the present” opens the shared training route. The timed three-fighter mission keeps it alive; Father or Teamwork? determines which ending you are cleaning up.
- Frieza Force Joins the Fray: the quick Goku-and-Vegeta clear opens a choice hub, not a single straight line. Mark each partner exit on the map rather than assuming one ending fills the others.
- Proof of Justice: fusing changes the result of Their Choice. If one small exit remains unlit, repeat that node with the opposite fusion decision instead of redoing Act Three Begins.
This is also the safest way to use a Dragon Orb. Spend it on the earliest unresolved performance gate, confirm that the blue line appeared, and then play later choice nodes normally. Using an Orb before identifying the failed node can solve a fight that was never the blocker.
The NEO Episode Battles need a dated checklist
Bandai Namco confirms that Super Limit-Breaking NEO adds four Episode Battles. The expansion launched on July 30, 2026, only two days before this guide’s evidence cutoff. The newest readable route reference says its coverage is still being updated and currently provides complete trigger descriptions for three. Those three can be used as checkpoints; naming or inventing the undocumented fourth route would not be reliable.
- Yamcha: in Yamcha vs. Saibaman, win without being caught by a self-destruct. The route then asks for a four-Saibaman battle before later Great Ape Vegeta and Vegeta fights. Distance is not passive here—it denies the route-ending grab while Kamehameha creates a safe punish.
- Tien: in Nappa vs. Tien, satisfy the “wear down Nappa” outcome. Use Sparking! Boost only when a rush string or Multiform can convert the buff into immediate health loss; the post-boost penalty is dangerous if Nappa survives.
- Cell: in Day of the Cell Games, defeat Goku and Gohan, then handle Android 16 quickly enough to preserve the alternate. At the following choice, select Defeat Gohan; attacking Gohan’s friends takes the other exit.
After the first qualifying fight has sent you onto a NEO branch, later battles may be lowered if the current client permits it without removing that already-earned map state. Do not assume that rule applies to the trigger node itself. Confirm the blue line first, and keep the fourth NEO slot marked “not yet verified” until its character, node, and continuation condition appear in a readable current source or in your own Story Map.

Finish the map with the fewest replays
Start cleanup with choice-only branches: Goku helping Piccolo, Piccolo helping Goku, Jiren waiting, and Trunks staying in the present. They establish long routes without asking you to discover a hidden timer first. Next, clear single speed gates such as Goku Black, Shining Hope, and Frieza. Leave the double gates—Parental Bond, the Trunks Tournament paths, and Cell’s NEO route—until you have a reliable burst sequence.
Track each route as entrance open, second gate passed, ending seen, and map confirmed. A trophy notification is useful, but it does not prove every small blue branch was visited. Conversely, one unlit side scene does not mean the long route achievement failed. The map distinguishes those jobs.
When a route refuses to open, make one controlled change:
- No alternate objective in Details: restore normal difficulty or inspect the Dragon Orb state.
- Quick win but orange line: reduce downtime or damage taken, depending on the node’s wording.
- Blue line followed by canon: find the next performance or decision gate.
- Choice is missing: replay the prerequisite battle that unlocks it.
- Ending seen but completion still open: inspect sibling exits such as Frieza’s partners or Goku Black’s fusion result.
That process is faster than replaying whole sagas and more resilient than memorizing hidden timers. The current Story Map tells you which branch exists; the current Details screen tells you what kind of result it wants; the next named node tells you whether your attempt actually worked.
Evidence cutoff and route uncertainty
Game identity, Steam AppID 1790600, Spike Chunsoft and Bandai Namco credits, the October 10, 2024 release date, and all four article images were verified through the official Steam page. Episode Battle’s eight original perspectives, choice and secondary-objective structure, and Story Map behavior were checked against Bandai Namco’s official Game Modes Handbook. Current combat and stage-difficulty changes were bounded by the May 2026 update notice.
The four-episode NEO scope and the new Sparking! Boost tradeoff were checked against Bandai Namco’s July 2026 expansion announcement. Route triggers were cross-checked across readable character maps, current walkthrough references, and a base-game achievement guide. Exact hidden timers, unsupported fourth-NEO-route claims, permanent tier rankings, post-patch damage values, and removed or incompatible Steam guides were excluded. If a later update changes a secondary objective, the live Story Map and Details panel take priority over this dated route board.
