In Shards of Order, read the next attack before spending Time, keep cards that cooperate in the shared deck, and reserve Ethereal Power for emergencies. Mistakes in those three systems carry from the scripted Shrike escape to the final choice.
Developer hotfix v1.0f20 is the version marker for the progression fixes mentioned below. Repeated Ethereal Power use can remove the better ending option, but the game does not expose a numeric safe limit. Minimize it from the start instead of trying to recover the branch at the final altar.
Spoiler boundary: region names, route gates, bosses, puzzle phrases, quest choices, and ending conditions appear below. If you only need combat help, read the next section and stop before Shrike’s Lair.
Make the campaign safe before following the campaign
There are no alternating party and enemy turns. Each hostile unit carries a countdown, and cards, Redraw, and movement spend Time against those clocks. A card with a large printed cost can allow several enemy actions before it resolves. Hover the incoming attack to see the threatened position, then include the one-Time movement cost when deciding whether to move Lev into that lane.
Redraw begins at four Time in the launch rules and becomes cheaper as Time is spent. The practical rhythm is not “play every cheap card.” It is to assemble a short sequence that sets the next attack, defense, or resource state, then redraw when the remaining cost is safe. If a four-Time enemy action is imminent, a three-Time attack followed by a one-Time move is already the whole window.

The three heroes draw from one pool. Lev converts Strength and Rage into direct pressure while carrying Shield; Ayla uses Sharp and a weapon-defined quiver to prepare bursts; Thade gains the colored mana needed by his stronger cards as the party plays hero-colored cards. That makes deck editing a party problem. One attractive card can still be a bad unlock if it lengthens the cycle without serving the line you actually play.
- Lev core: keep a dependable Shield/Grit answer, a Rage builder, and one Strength payoff. Early examples with clear jobs include Commanding Shout, Reckless Strike, Crushing Blow, and Duel.
- Ayla core: pair quiver loading with a reason to empty it. Lock and Load, Powerload, or Fully Automatic should feed Barrage or another chosen spender instead of becoming an isolated package.
- Thade core: either support the party or commit to Rot/Arcane damage. Rot is a low-commitment opener; Contagion and Decay need a hand that can reliably supply their conditions.
- Shared rule: remove unlocked cards that do not contribute to your opening sequence, recovery plan, or a known boss answer. Equipment can inject cards too, so compare the resulting deck as well as the armor number.
A normal Revive replaces the fallen hero’s cards with one-Time revive actions and returns that hero with partial health. It also increases Fracture pressure: subsequent redraws damage every party member in steps shown by the red counter. Ethereal Power is the emergency alternative. It restores a fallen hero fully, heals the surviving party, and adds an Ethereal card, but it is available only once in a battle and appears to carry campaign consequences.
For an ending-conscious first run, reserve Ethereal Power for a collapse that ordinary revives cannot stabilize. A single hero falling near the end of an encounter usually calls for one Revive after delaying the next threat. Two fallen heroes before a boss phase is the situation where Ethereal Power may save the attempt. Since no safe-use counter appears in the interface, minimize it, note every use, and keep a checkpoint before the final approach.

The route in five gates
| Stage | Mandatory gate | State to confirm before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Shrike’s Lair | Build the three-person party and defeat Shrike | Iron Key used, three journal pages read, statue phrase solved |
| Purged Village | Obtain Margrave’s Insignia, defeat Morgain, restore Identity | Herbalist/Miller choice made; optional quest consequences accepted |
| Breathless Sands | Recover Sundial stones and defeat the Wine King | Water restored, Pyramid opened, Moon Stone sequence entered |
| Frozen Marina | Open the ice route, cross the lake, defeat Serath | Whale resolved, both song pieces found, ferryman passage unlocked |
| Return and finale | Restore Neven’s missing half and defeat Chaos Presence | Optional desert questlines closed before entering the final gate |
Shrike’s Lair: escape first, assemble the party second
During the opening fall, complete the Inner Voice dialogue and select the three presented tarot cards. The first encounter is a lesson, so play Grit before the hostile clock expires and watch how Shield absorbs the result. When Shrike enters, attacking the bird is the wrong objective. Target the breakable obstacle beside it and leave the arena.
On the map, inspect the eastern wreckage and speak to the robed stranger, but do not read his refusal as a missing dialogue option. Thade cannot join yet. Turn west, clear the Pathway, and continue to the Corridor; Ayla joins after the ambush. At the Iron Gate, backtrack to the three-way fork because the required key is on its southern and western branches.
- Visit the Nest Dweller south of the fork. Attacking him awards Cheater; passing Time with three Redraws wins the staring contest and awards Staring Champ.
- Take the western branch, deal with the dog encounter, and open the iron chest. Its skill check can also provide a card; the required loot is the pair of Monk and Player Memories.
- Exchange one of those Memories with the Nest Dweller and receive his Iron Key. Your choice is not discarded forever: current choice evidence says the same Memory can return later in upgraded form, but the exact Monk shield value was unfinished in that reference, so no number is promised here.
- Open the Iron Gate and activate the checkpoint. Collect Linnaeus’ Journal pages 1 and 2 before pushing beyond it, then take page 3 at the next stretch.
- At the statues, construct Sinners / Feasting Upon / The Guilty. The wording comes from the three journal fragments; solving it gives the Memory of an Illusionist.
Continue beyond the statues and start the Pathway encounter. This is the recruitment trigger for Thade, so you should reach the next checkpoint with all three heroes. Entering Shrike’s Nest earlier is not an alternate solo challenge; it means a required recruitment step was missed.
Shrike telegraphs a position rather than a named hero. Put a shielded Lev in that lane, use Ayla’s Weakening to reduce pressure, and save burst for the bird until its add appears. At roughly the middle of the fight, the Spectral Nail threatens to impale a party member when its own clock resolves. Destroy the Nail first; hitting Shrike while the Nail is about to act trades boss damage for losing a hero. Victory supplies Shrike’s Feathers and opens the eastern route. The encounter at that exit is scripted, so preserve resources rather than trying to overcome an unwinnable state.
Purged Village: choose one rescue, then build the route to Morgain
The Village Gate cannot be opened until the Law of Identity is recovered. Start at the Chapel, go west to the Well, accept the apprentice’s request, and take the Blacksmith’s Tools. Clear the Street and Market on the way to the central fork, but inspect Margrave’s Manor before committing to either rescue branch. The manor establishes the Black Wing thread and offers a Sword-or-Memory choice.
The fork is a real exclusion, not a timing puzzle that allows both civilians to survive. Saving the Herbalist requires controlling the burning stake’s Buildup before its countdown hurts her; the reward is Sage, an exhausted party heal. Saving the Miller requires finishing the villagers before his drowning counter is exhausted; the reward is Tasty Rations, which strengthens the party and adds extra Sharp to Ayla. Choose Sage for a Thade-support line or Tasty Rations for an Ayla burst line. The later herbalist workstation remains usable for recipes even if she was not the rescue target.
At the Execution Site, do not attempt a conventional Fire Priest kill during the first confrontation. The hanging Blacksmith is the encounter objective, and the Priest repeatedly restores him. Delay the healer when possible, concentrate enough damage on the Blacksmith between heals, and end the event by reducing that target to zero. Return the head to the apprentice, mount the supplied Wagon Wheel on the blocked bridge, and reach the Forge. The Blacksmith then provides the Shovel and sends you back for the rest of his body.
The two ointments use different formulas, so label them before mixing:
| Recipient | Workstation input | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Salesman | 3 Red, 2 Yellow, 4 Blue | Advances Dangerous Roads and awards a Memory |
| Blacksmith | 2 Red, 4 Blue | Lets the recovered body rejoin its head at the Forge |
After obtaining the Shovel, open the three Graveyard plots. Margrave’s body is in the ordinary grave and needs a brain before it can provide the Insignia. The short route uses the Wereshrike’s brain, but that ends the Dangerous Roads resolution badly. The quest-preserving route continues through the Black Wing Legion Outpost, defeats the Commander, and brings Margrave’s own brain back to the grave. This is a genuine convenience-versus-quest tradeoff; decide before killing the Wereshrike.
The outpost route has two failure checks worth watching. A reinforcement wagon should be destroyed before its passengers turn the encounter into an attrition fight. The Commander also calls soldiers, but the battle ends when the Commander falls, so control any immediate lethal threat and keep primary damage on him. After collecting Margrave’s Brain, return to the body, take the Insignia, and unlock Morgain’s Tomb.
Morgain punishes passive turns. Reduce his Buildup when it begins to accumulate, then keep damage on the boss instead of automatically clearing every reinforcement. In the later phase he can remove his own minions with an attack, making full add cleanup wasted Time. Move the intended tank into his telegraphed lane, use Weakness or Shield to survive the large hit, and resume boss pressure. Defeating him restores the party’s identities, provides the Law of Identity, and makes the Village Gate usable.

Breathless Sands: let the Sundial tell you what is still missing
Visit the Cathedral of Order after leaving the village, place the recovered Law, and exhaust the Altar, Eyed Stones, companion, and Bellringer conversations. The Frozen Marina entrance remains sealed at this point, so move south to Breathless Sands. At the Magnificent Sundial, the Neven/Durian confrontation does not branch the main route; whichever side you initially choose, the scene converges.
The first reliable objective is the Hourglass Stone. Follow the eastern rim, clear encounters to the Bazaar Stall, and help the Blacksmith by using Forge only while the Smithy is vulnerable. Three accepted Forge actions produce the stone. Insert it at the Sundial to reverse the Collapsed Tower, free Makar, and obtain the Empty Canteen.
Continue through the restored tower into the eastern desert and visit Shirin’s Laboratory. Follow the combat path south until a checkpoint exposes the drained Oasis. The wave-marked Obelisk supplies the Water Stone. Return to the Sundial and enter:
Hourglass → Water → Hourglass → Hourglass → Water → Hourglass
The filled Oasis now serves two jobs. Refill Makar’s Canteen, and answer the Sphinx with Shrike, The Wine King, and Breathless Sands. Makar’s reward is the Spine Armor, but do not equip it while cursed. Its cleansing item is Incense, found on the southern route with the Eye Stone.
Past the Oasis, clear the Ruins and reach the checkpoint where Neven appears. Explore both sides: the Sculptures fight leads toward the western Obelisk, while the Giant Pit encounter ends at a chest and a pryable stone. Take the Incense from the chest and the Eye Stone from the stone. The Bazaar Blacksmith can then cleanse the Spine Armor and give the Pyramid-opening sequence:
Hourglass → Water → Eye → Hourglass → Eye → Water
Inside the Pyramid, kill the Cultist before the boulder’s clock resolves and collect the Bird Stone. The gate farther in is decoded by reading the three local Obelisks. Select these fragments in order:
A restless gale disturbs the dust
and the moment refuses to end
like you never had wings
The Wine King repeatedly changes card costs and temporarily hides their real values. Do not queue an expensive sequence just because every card displays one during the altered arena state. Rot remains useful because it continues to pressure the boss without depending on a single visible-cost burst; Ayla can prepare a full quiver for Barrage, while Lev stacks Strength for the windows when costs are trustworthy. Use Ethereal Power only if the party cannot be recovered normally. After the fight, the Sundial route to Frozen Marina opens with:
Bird → Bird → Water → Moon → Hourglass → Eye
Frozen Marina: the Whale is a Time puzzle, not a damage check
At the first split, take the southern Commotion before visiting Neven. Choosing Slash starts Orson’s club route; complete the two hero-restricted challenges if you want its Memory reward. Then speak to Neven, clear the eastern path, inspect the person inside the Frozen Wall, and talk to the Blacksmith at the Fish Hut. He opens another Memory slot and requests a Crystal from the Ice Cavern.
Reach the cave through the Sunken Path and accept the miners’ Whale objective. Inside, read both Linnaeus pages before choosing at the flooded chamber. The first explains that crystals regrow when at least one remains; the second explains the creature’s call. Mining immediately angers the miners. Attacking the Whale begins the intended puzzle.
Count the separated words in each Whale call, then play cards whose combined Time equals that count and press Redraw. For a three-part call, spend exactly three Time before the Redraw. The creature should not retaliate when the sum is correct. If it attacks, recount the current call rather than reusing the previous number. Hotfix v1.0f9 specifically repaired the Whale-charm resolution, so update the game if correct sums never advance it.
Return to the Frozen Wall after leaving the cave; the Blacksmith breaks it and opens the lake route. Ask the Anglers about Galt, inspect the Lighthouse for his journal, and choose to cross the Giant Frozen Lake. The fight drops the party into a crevice. Two shards are visible, but only one cuts the Fog Gate. Test the eastern shard, clear the other corridor if it fails, and return with the second piece.
Iago waits behind the fog with one health and a large Shield. Rot bypasses the need to remove the whole Shield, so apply it if available instead of exhausting the hand on direct damage. Outside the crevice, search Thade’s Study for the first half of Lisandre’s Song. Continue past the Frozen Street checkpoint, detour through the Whale Remains to the Collapsed Belltower, and rescue Galt. Serath’s Study on the eastern side holds the second song piece, but Lucian guards it.
Lucian’s Ethereal Body rejects normal boss damage. Attacking him creates a Crystal; breaking that Crystal transfers the damage. Repeat that one-spawn/one-break loop until phase two removes the Ethereal Body, then attack Lucian directly while accounting for cards he Freezes. Searching the study after victory supplies the second song segment. Return to the southern Pier and sing the completed song to the Ferryman.
Serath begins targetable, then summons two weapons and becomes protected. Destroy one weapon before its clock expires: breaking a weapon both hurts Serath and removes that attack. Floating masks join later to modify the field, but the weapons remain the route to boss damage until the final light-shadow phase makes Serath directly vulnerable again. Hotfix v1.0f20 fixed a progression lock after this fight; if the dungeon exit never advances on an older client, update before replaying the whole region.
Return to the desert before committing to the final gate
Placing the Law of Light at the Cathedral reveals that Time is incomplete. Back in Breathless Sands, daylight exposes the eastern settlement. Speak to Linnaeus first if you kept Shrike’s Feathers; the exchange rewards an upgrade material and closes part of Love and Marriage. Clear the Obelisk to recover the Sun Stone, then visit Javan’s Laboratory and inspect every interactive object before trying to leave.
Javan summons helpers and can apply Inverted. While that status is visible, direct damage heals him, so switch targets and remove healing-capable minions instead of feeding the boss. When the reversal ends, resume damage. To restore Javan afterward, use the Sundial input supplied by Linnaeus:
Sun → Moon → Bird → Eye → Water → Hourglass
Spare or execute Javan only after deciding how you want the quest to close; the recovered route confirms a reward for sparing him but does not prove that every other long-term consequence is identical. Report the result to Shirin before leaving the region.
The Timeless Cavern lies beyond the Fountain route. Its first chamber presents two portals, and the order does not matter. Clear both destination rooms and inspect one Painting in each. The second inspection opens the additional portal to the chained Prisoner and a checkpoint. The Prisoner breaks free at about half health but does not introduce a separate puzzle gate, so preserve enough defense for the increased freedom of movement and finish the encounter.
Chaos Presence: prepare for a fight with no Ethereal bailout
Return to the Cathedral Altar with the restored Laws and enter the Keeper’s gate. Finish any Nest Dweller, campsite, Law of Death, and Iago conversations on the approach, because the portal beyond them starts the final battle. The recovered finale route reports that Ethereal Power is unavailable here; a deck that survived earlier fights only through that button is not ready.

The first phase is direct boss pressure plus returning elites. A Fire Priest or Lucian-style summon can distort the whole turn, so remove the dangerous specialist, then return to the boss; slowly clearing harmless bodies gives Chaos Presence more high-impact actions. Do not rely on a giant Shield alone, because its heavy hit can break one in a single action.
At zero health the battle changes rather than ends. Five Laws appear and together form the second phase’s health structure. Attack the Laws, not the untargetable idea of the central boss. Later, cards gain Stuck and cannot be discarded normally, which makes a bloated deck especially dangerous: those cards have to be played before they leave the hand. Remove each Law while keeping at least one defensive answer available for the next clock.
After the cutscene, the game presents two conclusions: claim the Laws for your own Order, or seal them and restore the Order. The latter is the better-ending route, but heavy Ethereal Power use can prevent it from appearing. Check the actual choice screen. If only one option remains, there is no dialogue trick at the altar that restores the missing branch; the relevant condition was accumulated earlier.
Use state checks when your build takes a different route
- Thade will not join: obtain the Iron Key, read all three Linnaeus journals, solve the statues, and start the next Pathway encounter. Repeatedly talking at the first wreckage cannot force recruitment.
- The Village Gate stays closed: the Law of Identity comes after Morgain. Side quests and rescue rewards do not substitute for the Tomb and Insignia route.
- The Oasis remains dry: verify that the Hourglass Stone was inserted before entering the six-symbol Water sequence.
- The Pyramid door rejects the code: recover both Water and Eye Stones and report them to the Bazaar Blacksmith before using his sequence.
- The Whale attacks: count the current vocal segments, match their total with card Time, then Redraw; also confirm the client includes the v1.0f9 fix.
- The Ferryman has no song option: the two pieces are in Thade’s Study and Serath’s Study, so rescuing Galt alone is not sufficient.
- Serath’s exit is stuck: v1.0f20 includes a specific fix for that post-boss progression failure.
- The final ending option is absent: there is no late code. The lock reflects prior Ethereal use, and the game does not display an exact allowance.
