Total Chaos Good Ending Walkthrough: A Safe Chapter Route

Total Chaos hides its standard-campaign good ending behind decisions spread across Chapters 2 through 9. The dangerous part is not the final choice. It is preserving several nonlethal and Madness-dependent conditions long before the Epilogue can tell you whether the run still qualifies.

This route was checked on August 6, 2026, after the July 24 Retro Mode Update. It covers the original nine-chapter campaign in Steam App 2208350, not New Game+. New Game+ remixes the first seven chapters, adds Chapter 8: Reckoning, and now leads to a fifth ending through its Epilogue. Those are different routes.

One current-version warning matters immediately: the Retro Mode Update officially reworked the Chapter 3 Protector encounter, but its notes do not explain a new mercy trigger. The fuse-and-breakable-wall method below is the consistent route documented before that update. Use the current arena’s visible nonlethal exit cues as the deciding check, and never convert uncertainty into a Protector kill.

The route contract

Chapter Condition to preserve Proof before moving on
2: Decay Take the cassette beneath the graveyard The boards are broken and the cassette is collected
3: Forgotten Spare the Protector and use the hidden exit The wall opens and you leave while the Protector is alive
4: Storm Spare Forgotten Ones and bypass the Wall of Connections while Mad The Madness-only opening appears; the wall is not burned
5: Crossroads Finish the chapter while Mad No grounding record player is used after High Dose
6: Regression Spare the Tree Lurker Every Hydro valve remains untouched
7: Madness Optional insurance pickup Take the catacomb recording only if the extra route is present and safe
8: Chaos Spare every Forgotten One The blocked doorway is bypassed by the alternate path
9: Resolve Validate the accumulated flags No final Forgotten Ones appear in the Epilogue

The run-wide rule is simple but strict: do not kill the faceless humanlike enemies identified as Forgotten Ones. If one dies to your attack, do not assume a later cassette or merciful boss exit repairs the flag. Return to a save from before that encounter. Other creatures can still be normal combat targets; the rule is not a generic no-kill challenge.

Chapter 2: take the cassette under the graveyard

Once you reach the graveyard in Decay, search the ground for wooden boards covering a hole. Break the boards and drop into the hidden space. Collect the cassette there before leaving the area.

The cassette is the only ending-route action that the captured guides consistently attach to this chapter. The graveyard’s invisible enemy is not a Forgotten One, so dealing with that threat does not conflict with the run-wide rule. The failure signal is reaching the end of the graveyard route without the cassette. Backtrack while the opening is still accessible instead of hoping another recording substitutes for it.

Chapter 3: carry three fuses into the Protector route

Forgotten contains the easiest point at which to lose the route permanently. During the police-station progression, gather the three removable fuses, use them where required, then take them back before committing to the drop and gate that lead toward the Protector. Check your inventory: you need all three carried fuses for the hidden exit.

The documented encounter sequence uses a separate fourth fuse found in the arena to start the fight. It does not consume the three you carried. Once the Protector is active, locate the marked wall beside the prison bars—the older route identifies it by the words “They’re gone.” Keep the Protector alive and provoke its large scream or area attack at that wall. The documented route requires the attack to break the wall twice. Move through the breach, install the three saved fuses, and take the secret exit without killing the boss.

Do not confuse damage used to provoke an attack with permission to finish the boss. The observable success state is an open wall plus a powered escape while the Protector remains alive. The hard failure signals are a dead Protector or fewer than three carried fuses. Reload before the arena in either case.

Because the July 2026 update reworked this encounter, make one additional check before committing: the current arena must still expose a marked breakable wall or an equivalent visible nonlethal exit objective. If those cues are absent, do not keep shooting until the Protector dies. Follow the current arena’s nonlethal objective indicators and verify that you leave it alive. The update confirms a rework; it does not justify inventing an unseen replacement trigger.

Chapter 4: stay Mad until the hidden bypass opens

Storm tests two flags at once. After obtaining the Oasis Goods key, the apartment chase begins under Madness. Forgotten Ones occupy the route. Do not shoot them. Pull them away from a chokepoint, loop around the group, and pass while they are still alive.

After the chase, a grounding record point appears. Skip it. Using it clears Madness before the route needs that state. Continue toward Oasis Goods while still Mad; a new opening near the store becomes available and carries you around the Wall of Connections. Take this route instead of burning the growth.

The decision is easy to audit. If the hidden opening appears and you reach the far side without burning the wall, continue. If you grounded yourself and the opening is missing, or burning the wall becomes the only visible progression option, reload before the first post-chase record point. A later merciful action does not prove that this Chapter 4 branch survived.

After the Madness tunnel, the later record player is safe to use. The route only depends on keeping Madness through the bypass, not on carrying the condition beyond its job in Storm.

Chapter 5: prepare for one no-grounding run

Official screenshot of the game’s distorted visual state. In Crossroads, clearing Madness at a record player is the failure—not merely a convenience.

Crossroads is mechanically simple and operationally risky: take the High Dose medication, then finish the chapter without grounding at a record player. Make your useful save before taking the dose. Once the state is active, record players are hazards rather than checkpoints.

Keep extra distance from their interaction zones, especially when an item lies nearby. Line up the item prompt before pressing interact. Accidentally grounding while trying to loot breaks the condition, and dying later can leave you without a clean recovery point. If either happens, reload the pre-dose save and repeat the whole Mad section.

Some routes recommend answering every ringing phone and collecting the revolver. Those actions are cheap insurance when they appear directly on your path, but the captured evidence does not establish them as independent good-ending requirements. Take them if convenient; do not mistake them for a repair mechanism after Madness has been cleared.

Chapter 6: separate Hydro valves from progression valves

Regression asks you to spare the Tree Lurker. The Radio Voice directs you toward valves, but the ending condition turns on their labels. Leave every valve marked Hydro untouched. Do not test one and reload only if the creature reacts; decide from the label before interacting.

Later, pump control still requires valve work to leave the area. Those progression valves are separate from the Hydro set. Repair the pipe and operate only the valves that belong to the pump puzzle. The useful confirmation is the Radio Voice sounding displeased because the earlier Hydro valves were ignored. If you turned a Hydro valve or the Tree Lurker dies, reload from before the valve sequence.

Chapter 7: distinguish insurance from a proven flag

Near the apparent end of the catacombs, the Radio Voice resumes and a lever offers a clear exit. Several guides direct you past that point into a second dark route marked by flares, ending at a recording or journal on a chair and a nearby elevator. Taking it is a sensible insurance action if the path exists in your version.

It is not safe to call this pickup mandatory. One detailed Steam guide later noted that the step may not affect the ending and may have been carried over from the original DOOM II mod. That version boundary matters. If the extra path is present, follow the flares, keep a light source active, collect the recording, and use the nearby exit. If it is absent or would force a lethal choice, preserve the proven nonlethal conditions rather than inventing a requirement.

Chapter 8: use the path the Radio Voice does not want

Dark marked wall and passage in Total Chaos
Official screenshot. Good-ending progress repeatedly depends on reading the environment for an alternate route instead of forcing the obvious combat gate.

Early in Chaos, Forgotten Ones block a doorway and the Radio Voice encourages killing them. Do not attack. Search the surrounding area for the alternate path and follow it until you arrive behind the group. The route reconnects near a record player; an additional cassette may be nearby and can be collected as insurance.

Do not turn the flanking route into a backstab. The condition is that the Forgotten Ones survive, not merely that you reach the far side. If one dies to your attack, reload before the blocked doorway and repeat the bypass.

Chapter 9: let the Epilogue audit the run

Resolve provides an observable result for all the hidden work: the final Forgotten Ones should not spawn in the Epilogue when the good-ending conditions are set. This is more than community pattern-matching. Official Patch 1.02b specifically fixed the final Forgotten Ones so they would not appear when the good-ending conditions had been met.

The absence of those enemies is the validation signal. Continue the ending sequence when the approach is clear. If they do appear, do not label the run successful or search for a last-second dialogue choice. One of the earlier flags failed—most likely a killed Forgotten One, a dead Protector, a burned Wall of Connections, lost Madness, or a turned Hydro valve. Recovery requires a save before the missed condition or another campaign run.

Failure diagnosis

Visible problem What it means Safe response
Only two police-station fuses are in inventory The Chapter 3 hidden exit cannot be powered by the documented route Backtrack before entering the Protector commitment point
The Protector dies before the wall opens The mercy condition is lost Reload before the arena; reduce damage and focus on provoking the wall attack
The reworked arena has no documented wall/exit cue The old trigger cannot be responsibly assumed Keep the Protector alive and use current nonlethal objective indicators; do not improvise a kill
The Chapter 4 Madness opening is absent You probably grounded too early Reload before the post-chase record point and skip it
Crossroads returns to a normal grounded state The Chapter 5 condition is broken Reload the pre-High-Dose save and finish without using records
The Tree Lurker dies A Hydro valve was operated Reload before the valve sequence and interact only with pump-puzzle valves
Forgotten Ones appear in the Epilogue The accumulated good-ending flags are not complete Return to an earlier save; there is no evidenced Chapter 9 repair

The safest way to use this walkthrough is as a sequence of go/no-go checks. Do not leave a chapter merely because its normal objective is complete. Leave when the ending-specific observable result is also present. That discipline matters more than any disputed phone, revolver, or extra recording.
