The first star in Tavern Keeper is not awarded for making the room look finished. Riverbottom checks four separate states: enough visitors, an acceptable satisfaction average, progress in Drinks, and progress in Services. If the star is stuck, spending more gold at random usually makes the problem harder to diagnose.
This route covers the opening of The New Owner through the moment you claim your first full star. It was checked against the Early Access game and official update history through version 0.75.12, released June 24, 2026. The interface may show different button prompts on keyboard, controller, or Steam Deck, so the guide uses menu and panel names rather than relying on one control scheme.
What the first-star route actually requires
Story mode begins in Riverbottom. Do not choose Freeplay if your goal is to follow The New Owner and unlock the campaign route. The tutorial first asks you to create a functioning drinks service; the guild story then exposes the rating requirements.
| Gate | Visible check | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Basic tavern | The opening objective clears | A Taproom, a serving surface, one tap, one employee, stocked drink, and an open tavern |
| Visitor count | The rating tooltip reaches 8 patron visits | Stay open with usable seating and drink stock |
| Satisfaction | The average reaches 65% | Open Patron Satisfaction and repair the lowest category |
| Drinks | The Drinks banner reaches half a star | Keep two drinks available and actually assigned to working taps |
| Services | The Services banner reaches half a star | Provide an Outhouse or Bulletin Board |
The banner requirements are sub-gates, not optional suggestions. A busy room can still be blocked because it offers only one drink. A clean, attractive room can still be blocked because Services has no qualifying object. Treat the star tooltip as a checklist rather than a general score.
Build only the opening service loop
Clear the wreckage requested by the tutorial, then draw a modest Taproom with a door. Add the required serving surface and tap. Make a small Storeroom close to that room instead of sending staff across the whole property for every barrel. The first layout needs short working routes, not spare floor for systems that are still locked.
Hire one employee after checking the displayed skills, quirks, and wage. The objective does not require an ideal recruit. It requires someone who can operate the opening tavern without consuming the starting budget. Buy one or two low-tier kegs from the available merchant, provide pallet space, load a drink onto the tap, and wait until the assignment is complete before opening.
Use the objective list as your launch check:
- The room is recognized as a Taproom.
- The tap and serving surface are inside it and usable.
- An employee is hired.
- A delivered keg is stored rather than stranded outside.
- The tap shows an assigned drink.
- The tavern is open.
If patrons enter but no drinks move, pause before adding furniture. Select the tap and confirm that it contains the intended barrel. Then check whether the employee can reach both the tap and storage. A server waiting beside an empty tap is a stock or refill problem, not a demand problem.
Protect the second day before expanding
Your first worker can reach the end of the day without a proper sleeping space, but that is a warning, not a sustainable plan. Once the opening tasks allow it, build a compact Staffroom and place a bed. Keep enough gold for wages. Closing the tavern does not erase payroll, so shutting the doors while continuing to build can still leave you short.
Watch the event track and pending payments before ordering extra barrels or enlarging the Taproom. If the employee sleeps on the floor, the missing state is visible: the worker lacks an available bed in a Staffroom. Fix that condition before hiring another person whose wage and sleeping needs duplicate the problem.
The next progression event is a Story Book carried by Dorothy Chaddius. Click the character with the book indicator and continue Innocent Until Proven Guild-y. Agreeing to join the Tavern Keepers Guild advances the normal route and introduces the star objective. Repeated refusal is an alternate achievement outcome that ends this attempt instead of moving the tavern forward, so it does not belong in a first-star run.
Read the rating panels before buying anything
After Dorothy’s event, hover or open the tavern rating. The half-star checkpoint should show four requirements: 65% average patron satisfaction, 8 visits, Drinks at half a star, and Services at half a star. Open the Drinks and Services banners separately. Those panels tell you which system is missing; the big star alone does not.

Also open Patron Satisfaction instead of judging the room by its overall percentage. The category breakdown lets you identify whether one patron disliked the service, environment, or offering. If a category is low, select the patrons concentrated at the bad end of its distribution and read their individual feedback. That turns a vague score into a specific repair.
Use the atmosphere overlays when feedback points to the room itself. Brightness, filth, temperature, decoration, damage, and flammability are visible as separate states. Do not cover every tile with new objects merely because an overlay exists. Repair the path and seating area patrons actually use, then wait for new ratings to replace the older bad visits.
Clear Services with one deliberate purchase
The early Services gate accepts an Outhouse or a Bulletin Board. An Outhouse is the more direct choice because it gives patrons a facility and can keep them in the tavern longer. Place it in the outdoor area where it remains reachable from the Taproom. If you choose a Bulletin Board instead, mount it where the game accepts it and confirm the Services banner changes.
The observable result matters more than the object name. Reopen the Services panel after building. If its half-star condition is still incomplete, check whether the object finished construction and whether patrons have a valid route to it. Do not buy the other option until you know the first one failed to register; otherwise you spend twice without learning which state is wrong.
Clear Drinks with two live menu choices
One stocked tap is enough to open the tavern, but it is not the dependable route through the Drinks rating. Add a second tap, order a second kind of drink, and keep replacement stock on pallets in the nearby Storeroom. Assign one menu choice to each tap and confirm that both are enabled and available.
This step has three failure points that look similar from a distance:
- The delivery is pending. The World Map order exists, but the keg has not arrived. Wait for the delivery marker rather than reopening with an empty menu slot.
- The keg has nowhere to go. Add pallet capacity if stock remains outside or the storage overview does not show it where expected.
- The drink is owned but not served. Select the second tap and assign the second drink. Inventory alone does not create a live menu option.
Keep the storage route short. Long carrying paths delay refills, and a tap waiting for a barrel creates a service queue even when plenty of stock exists elsewhere. If satisfaction drops while both drinks are listed, watch a service cycle: a refill delay and a menu shortage require different fixes.
Reach 8 visits without losing the 65% average
Once Drinks and Services show their required ratings, the remaining gates are earned through operation. Stay open, keep the taps filled, and let the visit counter move toward eight. Do not hire or expand solely because two patrons are waiting at once. First check whether the queue clears after a refill and whether the satisfaction panel identifies speed as the real issue.

If the average falls below 65%, repair the lowest visible category:
- For slow service, reduce the distance between tables, taps, and drink storage, and make sure the barrel carrier is not blocked.
- For drinks, confirm both choices remain stocked and priced, then inspect the patron’s displayed reaction rather than guessing at a universal favorite.
- For atmosphere, use the relevant overlay and improve the route patrons occupy.
- For an unmet facility need, verify that the Outhouse or Bulletin Board is complete and reachable.
Build a Dartboard when it becomes available in this stage. It adds a paid activity, but it does not substitute for the visible Drinks or visit requirements. Continue serving until the star notification appears.
Claim the star and verify the unlocks
The notification means the gates have been met; it is not the final action. Click Star Earned to claim the full star. The expected unlocks are Toilet, Wash Basin, Food Window, and Grill. Seeing those items is the clean observable proof that the first-star step finished.
If the notification never appears, reopen the star tooltip and read the one line that remains incomplete. If the notification appeared but the new items are missing, make sure you actually claimed it. Only after the unlock screen should you start spending on the kitchen or a larger service plan. That keeps the opening route cheap, readable, and recoverable when one system stalls.
