MISERY First 10 Shinings: Build a Safe Bunker Before the Season Turns

Survivors warming themselves at a campfire during a snowy MISERY expedition

The first ten Shinings in MISERY are not ten fixed maps to memorize. The expedition side of the door is procedurally generated, the timer changes with difficulty, and the official April 2026 update made seasons cycle every ten days. What you can control is the state that survives each reset: a return route you can recognize, a working power circuit, protected storage, a way to clean water and food, and enough free floor space for the next station.

Verification snapshot: August 10, 2026. The current official boundary is the May 21 update plus the May 22–23 artifact and bomber hotfixes. Those updates separated masks from hats, exposed item and trader stats in descriptions, repaired Hardcore respawning, preserved dwarf inventories across Shinings, and continued changing locations. Older guides call the reset an Emission; the current achievement and patch language uses Shining. If your preset, tutorial, or item card disagrees with a fixed number below, the current client wins.

Decide what must survive before you open the first door

Use a normal preset for this opening route. Explorer can be useful for learning the maps, while Adventurer is the balanced baseline described by the official difficulty update. Hardcore is a separate one-life commitment, and a custom game can alter expedition time, loot, enemies, hunger, friendly fire, and other assumptions. The route still works on those settings, but its timing will not.

Before every departure, name one permanent result. “Bring back good loot” produces a pack full of unrelated objects. These targets produce a bunker that can carry the next run:

Missing state Expedition contract Return test
No dependable carrying space Prioritize a coat, jacket, rig, backpack, cupboard, or cabinet over loose low-value supplies. The wearable is equipped or the container has been placed inside the bunker.
Incinerator or station will not run Bring gasoline, a cable, a battery, electronics, or one missing circuit part. Power reaches one chosen device and its process actually starts.
Food and water are shrinking Recover safe food, plastic for a well, seeds, a cooking device, or chemical-table materials. You can restore the weak stat without spending tomorrow’s emergency ration.
Stations are blocking each other Find or craft a sledgehammer, then return without filling its required inventory footprint. One planned concrete block is removed and the new space has a purpose.
Radiation ends every long run Look for protection, a mask, anti-rad supplies, or a safer sale that funds them at SIRZEZ. Your return kit can stop accumulation and then lower the meter.

A portable object is not permanent progress until it crosses the bunker threshold. Returning early with one battery is better than dying while trying to add a rifle, two cabinets, and a cooking station to the same overloaded run.

The one-minute evacuation is an inventory puzzle

The fixed opening gives roughly 60 seconds after you pass through the first door. Do not clear the house by room. Build carrying capacity first, then take survival items, then use any remaining cells for production.

  1. Take the wearable with slots. Launch references place a Fur Coat near the lower white table. Equip it immediately if the current introduction still uses that layout; carrying it inside your starting pockets wastes the space it is meant to create.
  2. Secure the visible medical and drink items. A bandage and water were placed on the right-side table in the documented introduction. These protect the first real expedition from one unlucky contact.
  3. Use small cells on food and seeds. Kvass, wheat, and carrot seeds were documented in the kitchen. Seeds are future production, not immediate rescue, so abandon them before abandoning the bandage or the slotted coat.
  4. Stop looting when the exit becomes the task. Shaking and the whitening screen are the departure signal. Move onto the extraction point with enough margin to correct a missed doorway.

If the tutorial moved an item in a later patch, preserve the priority rather than hunting the old coordinate: wearable space, medicine, hydration, then sustainable food. The evacuation is successful when those items arrive in the bunker. It is not a score attack for every object in the house.

Your first expedition needs a breadcrumb, a turnaround, and a dump

There is no conventional world map. The April update added a compass toggle, but the compass cannot draw the route back through a generated settlement. When you emerge, turn around and study the bunker approach. Pick two features that will remain legible in bad weather: the courtyard opening plus a tower, road angle, dish, unusual roofline, or utility pole. A screenshot is a legitimate backup.

Move outward along one edge instead of weaving between every building. Each time you change direction, look back and confirm that the previous landmark still points home. The first useful loop is small:

  • Search a nearby structure for a basic weapon, light source, wearable storage, medicine, plastic, cable, battery, or gasoline.
  • Equip a jacket, coat, rig, or backpack instead of carrying it as cargo. Check both grid space and weight; empty cells do not help when the character is overloaded.
  • Return as soon as one progression object is exposed to loss. You may cross into the bunker more than once before the Shining, so make a dump run rather than betting the whole day.
  • Leave the second trip early enough that the siren confirms a decision already made. If the siren is what makes you turn around, the route was too ambitious.

Stationary gray cores can teleport you to a loot space at the cost of health. Pulsating or expanding black orbs are damaging anomalies. Do not test the difference with a full pack: observe whether the sphere changes size, watch nearby effects, and approach only when your health and return time can pay for a mistake.

Make one complete power circuit before collecting more generators

The bunker begins with electrical pieces, but possession is not connection. Treat power as a path: source to cable to storage or splitter to device. A gasoline generator without fuel is inert; a charged battery disconnected from the station is only furniture; a splitter does not create energy.

  1. Place the gasoline generator where you can reach its fuel and output without burying it behind storage.
  2. Connect a cable to a battery or splitter, then connect the selected device. The incinerator is a good first test because scrap-to-iron progression and disposal both depend on it.
  3. Add gasoline and turn the source on. Confirm charge or device activity in the interface instead of trusting a cable that merely looks attached.
  4. Only after the test works should you add more batteries, branches, lights, a refrigerator, or another station.

The April update made generators and batteries retain charge when picked up and placed again, but you should still check the stored value after moving a component. If the circuit fails, isolate it: source on, fuel present, cable snapped to the intended socket, storage accepting charge, device connected, recipe inputs inside the correct conversion slots.

A Wooden Wind Turbine can provide renewable power outside, while a Dwarf Generator turns a recruited dwarf and vodka into another source. These are upgrades after the first circuit, not substitutes for understanding it. The May update also made dwarves retain their inventory across Shinings, which makes a tamed dwarf safer as mobile storage; empty and inspect it before committing the same dwarf to power generation.

Remove concrete for a floor plan, not for an empty cave

A sledgehammer turns bunker walls into usable rooms, and the Stroybat achievement tracks ten concrete blocks. That does not make blind demolition efficient. The hammer is large, has durability, and competes with the materials you are trying to bring home.

Stage the intended station and its support chain before striking a wall. An Advanced Workbench needs room around it; a Chemical Table needs power and inputs; a refrigerator matters only if the food system uses it; crops need a sensible exterior position. Break one block, place the next device, walk the access path, and only then open another block.

Carry enough free grid space for a found sledgehammer. If you craft one, read the live Workbench recipe rather than relying on a launch-week cost. If a wall takes a different number of hits than an older guide claims, watch the wall state and tool durability. The correct stop is “the planned object fits and can be wired,” not “the room looks large.”

Shinings 1–3: secure the loop before chasing rare loot

For the first three resets, the strongest outcome is boring: you can leave, identify home, bring something back, store it, and restore the character. Use this order:

  1. Carrying layer: equip any useful coat or jacket, then add a backpack or rig when found. Store spare equipment at home rather than nesting important supplies in a container you might sell or lose.
  2. Recovery layer: keep one healing item and one radiation answer on the character. Put reserve medicine in a named bunker container.
  3. Power layer: finish the generator-cable-battery-device test. Smelt scrap into an Iron Bar to prove the incinerator path and unlock Industrialization if achievements are active.
  4. Navigation layer: make two short out-and-back lanes from the bunker. Do not explore the far side of a generated map until both lanes can be reversed without guesswork.

Do not call a particular pistol or sledgehammer spawn guaranteed. Launch routes found a TT-33 in a stash near a bench and a sledgehammer inside a house, but procedural generation and later content updates can move or omit them. The current May build shows damage and protection on item cards. Compare the gun, melee tool, armor, and mask you actually found; keep the option whose ammunition, condition, space, and protection fit the next contract.

Shinings 4–6: turn SIRZEZ and stations into conversion tools

SIRZEZ is not a general “sell all” screen. Different traders accept different categories, and the repair economy changed in 2026. Move an item into the character’s main inventory before assuming it is sellable; objects inside a backpack or rig may not appear in the transaction. Current traders show item stats, and the April patch prevents selling a container unless it is empty, reducing accidental loss of stored gear.

Sell duplicates and objects that cannot close a known bunker gap. Keep the material that completes a station or circuit. A good transaction names its purpose before you click: buy medicine for the next radioactive route, pay the Technician to restore a useful broken weapon, buy the missing cable, or turn an artifact into funds when its tradeoffs do not fit your build.

Build stations in the order your shortages demand:

  • Advanced Workbench: broader construction and equipment projects. Build it when you can still walk around it and power the resulting chain.
  • Sewing Machine: repairs and protective clothing progression. The May update separates hats and masks, so check both equipment slots when assembling cold and radiation protection.
  • Chemical Table: water purification and processed supplies. Plastic bottles can be refilled at suitable wells, but untreated water is not automatically safe.
  • Cooking device and refrigerator: the March update made most scavenged food spoiled. Read health, hunger, thirst, radiation, and insanity changes before eating, and refrigerate good food when the current item supports it.

Exact recipes and sale prices are intentionally omitted here. Official updates have added items, altered repair value, restored vegetable trading, and exposed live stats precisely because launch tables age badly.

Shinings 7–10: spend surplus on resilience, not clutter

By the seventh Shining, choose one self-sustaining line. Crops can turn recovered seeds into repeatable food. A Chemical Table can convert dirty water and process supplies. Renewable generation can reduce gasoline pressure. A Busel Detector can turn anomaly fields into artifacts and sale value. Trying to complete all four at once creates half-built stations and no safe expedition kit.

Use a three-container bunker layout:

  • Departure: medicine, anti-rad, clean drink, food, loaded ammunition, light source, and the tool required by the next contract.
  • Production: scrap, wood, plastic, electronics, glass, fuel, seeds, repair components, and other station inputs.
  • Do not sell: rare equipment, a working detector, a prepared replacement loadout, and materials reserved for one named build.

This prevents the most common trading failure: selling the last component because it looked like junk, then buying it back at a loss. It also shortens the pre-departure check. If the departure container is incomplete, the expedition is not ready.

When fighting becomes necessary, solve access rather than proving a weapon tier. Bandits can be separated around doors and corners; fast animals punish open-ground melee; radioactive structures compound combat damage; Nuclear Bunker creatures are a later equipment check. Current item cards let you compare damage and protection. Ammunition supply, weapon condition, escape space, and the first failing stat matter more than a launch-era “best gun” label.

Radiation is a route budget with an exit condition

Radiation becomes dangerous when the player treats protection and removal as the same thing. A suit, gas mask, or artifact may slow or reshape exposure; an anti-rad item or a negative-radiation artifact lowers accumulated radiation. Read the current item description, because the sign on an artifact is part of its cost.

Before entering a visibly contaminated building or anomaly cluster, set three limits:

  1. Entry limit: do not begin while hunger, thirst, health, or insanity is already causing another failure.
  2. Turn limit: name the radiation level or remaining cure at which you leave, even if the detector is still responding.
  3. Return reserve: keep enough protection and treatment for the path home. The item found at the center cannot be counted as the rescue plan.

If the meter rises faster than expected, retreat along the exact entry line rather than searching for a shorter exit. If health continues falling after treatment, inspect bleeding, hunger, thirst, spoiled food, and insanity instead of consuming every anti-rad item. Several systems can produce the same red-screen panic.

The tenth Shining tests the bunker, not your memory of the old map

The April 18 official update states that seasons change every ten days and cycle. It also lets custom games choose a starting season. That makes the first ten Shinings a natural audit point, not an ending. At the rollover, confirm:

  • one complete power circuit can restart after components are moved;
  • food and clean water have a repeatable source or an affordable SIRZEZ fallback;
  • the departure container supports healing, radiation control, navigation, and the selected weapon;
  • the bunker has room for one more station without blocking cables, doors, or storage;
  • the player can abandon a far objective and reverse a route before the siren;
  • good equipment is compared using current item cards rather than an old fixed tier list.

If one check fails, the next Shining has its contract. A season change can alter scenery and conditions, and the May notes admit that season fixes were still being refined. Preserve systems that work across generated maps; do not rebuild a ten-day route around one lucky spawn.

Use the first failure signal, not the death screen

First signal What it usually means Next correction
Siren starts before you can identify home The route expanded faster than its landmarks. Use one outward lane, make an earlier dump, and set a turnaround before leaving.
Device has inputs but no progress The electrical path or conversion slot is incomplete. Test source, fuel, cable, storage, splitter, and device one link at a time.
Inventory has cells but pickup fails Weight, object footprint, or nested storage is the constraint. Equip storage, move items out of the main grid, or abandon lower-priority bulk.
Radiation cure does not stop health loss Another survival stat or status is also failing. Exit contamination and inspect health, bleeding, food quality, hunger, thirst, and insanity.
Bunker is larger but harder to use Concrete was removed without a wiring and access plan. Place one station and its support objects before opening the next block.
Trading removes tomorrow’s project Sale value replaced a named reserve. Separate departure, production, and do-not-sell containers before visiting SIRZEZ.

The run has stabilized when a bad expedition costs time, not the entire bunker plan. From that point, later Shinings can support artifact hunting, achievement cleanup, Nuclear Bunker raids, larger construction, or a separate Hardcore attempt without asking one fragile loadout to do everything.

Official identity and update boundary

The official Steam page for App 2119830 identifies Platypus Entertainment as developer, Ytopia as publisher, October 23, 2025 as the release date, one-to-ten-player co-op, and the official JPG screenshots used here. The May 21 official update is the latest substantial public mechanics post in the captured feed; the following artifact and bomber hotfixes set the final May 23 boundary. Launch walkthrough references were used only for enduring object relationships and first-run checkpoints. Fixed prices, recipes, outputs, food values, guaranteed spawns, and weapon rankings were not treated as permanent.
