Mistfall Hunter Cipher Guide: Match Every Phrase to the Right NPC

A Cipher is solved by its words, not by its color or the NPC standing closest to your Warehouse. Read both strings on the item, identify the vocabulary family, and take it to the matching Windrest character before using the decipher option. The ambiguous word Haggling is the one exception that requires its companion word.

This lookup reflects readable guides updated through August 10, 2026 and the official game and update record checked through August 7. Mistfall Hunter is a live game, so rely on the current item text when a translation or newly added word does not appear below.

Use both word strings before choosing an NPC

Open the Cipher and inspect the words at the end of its description. Current references describe two strings that point toward one camp NPC. Walk to that character, open the interaction text, and use the Decipher option shown at the bottom. Matching the intended NPC preserves the better first correct-decipher reward; handing it to the wrong character costs that bonus opportunity.

Most words are distinctive enough to solve immediately. Anvil belongs to the blacksmith, Anchor belongs to Dew’s group, and Caravan belongs to Merimo’s. Do not guess from a single generic word such as Haggling. Read the pair because that term appears in two different solutions.

All current Cipher word matches

Windrest NPC Recognizable role Words that point here
Cazarro Merchant Balance, Barter, Blood, City State, Covenant, Insight, Intelligence, Interest; also Barter + Haggling when that pair appears
Dew Maiden by the Pool Anchor, Echo, Homeward, Prophecy, Spindle, Weaver
Dramm Blacksmith Anvil, Ashes, Brimstone, Fire, Furnace, Mineral Vein, Oathbound, Smoke
Merimo Pip’s giant goat Camel Bells, Caravan, Cheese, Hay, Rugs, Salt Lick
Pip Auction House Elder Edict, Mantra, Plucking, Score, Secret Cache, Tree Hollow; also Haggling + Hoarding when that pair appears
Soekja The bird Guidance, Praise, Return, Signpost, Stone Steps, Supplies, Tides, Wings
Sigrid Tavern keeper Acid, Cloves, Malt, Residual Heat, Sealing Wax

Search rule: one exact distinctive phrase is normally enough, but the full pair wins if two entries appear to compete. In particular, do not route Haggling by itself: Haggling + Hoarding goes to Pip, while Barter + Haggling goes to Cazarro. This pair rule resolves the only material conflict between the two current reference lists.

Route the item in Windrest without wasting the attempt

  1. Read before moving. Open the Cipher in safe storage and write down both strings. This prevents a half-remembered keyword from turning into a guess after walking between NPCs.
  2. Match the narrowest word. Start with phrases such as Mineral Vein, Secret Cache, Stone Steps, or Sealing Wax, which have one clear row.
  3. Resolve Haggling by its partner. Hoarding means Pip; Barter means Cazarro. If neither companion is present, stop and re-read the complete item instead of assuming.
  4. Confirm the character name. Similar camp locations are not a substitute for the name shown by the interaction prompt.
  5. Choose Decipher once. Use the option only after the two-word check. Record any new or translated phrase that the live client adds.

This method is faster than trying NPCs in sequence because the reward condition is tied to choosing correctly, not eventually finding someone who accepts the item. It also survives layout changes in Windrest: the solution remains the named NPC even if a patch moves a character or changes a menu.

Know what the seven vocabularies are describing

The table is easier to remember when treated as seven themes rather than a list of isolated answers:

  • Cazarro: trade, civic power, contracts, and commercial intelligence.
  • Dew: return, fate, weaving, and the Pool’s spiritual imagery.
  • Dramm: forging, heat, smoke, ore, and oaths.
  • Merimo: travel goods, animal care, and caravan life.
  • Pip: hidden value, collecting, scoring, and secret stores.
  • Soekja: directions, signs, supplies, tides, and guidance.
  • Sigrid: drink ingredients, heat, cloves, and sealing a vessel.

The themes are a fallback for recognition, not permission to invent an answer. If a new Cipher uses a word absent from the verified list, compare both strings, inspect the current guide interface, and wait for a confirmed mapping if the pair still fits several NPCs.

Farm Ciphers without treating a random drop as a route guarantee

Ciphers can appear during hunts from protected chests, defeated minions or bosses, and quests associated with Soekja. Those are opportunity categories, not fixed spawn points. A route that reaches more eligible loot can create more rolls, but it cannot promise that a particular Cipher will appear.

Choose the map and mode according to the run you can extract from. One current guide argues that trio maps offer more rewards, but that claim is not backed by an official fixed multiplier in the captured material and comes with obvious solo risk. Do not enter a squad-heavy route solely because an old page promises a Cipher rate. The item only produces value after it reaches Windrest.

When a Cipher drops, reassess the run. If its first correct decipher matters more than the next uncertain container, move toward a return plan and reduce optional fights. The best farm is the one that converts found Ciphers into camp interactions, not the one with the most unbanked loot attempts.

Do not confuse normal Ciphers with the expired Gylden Rush event

A launch article linked Cipher deciphering to Gylden Rush and Ancestral Ciphers. That event page stated the cutoff as 2026-08-10 23:59:59 UTC. The event is therefore outside this evergreen lookup’s current boundary. Normal Cipher matching remains useful, but an old event reward, ranking, or currency path should not be presented as active after its stated deadline.

If a later event reuses Cipher names, read the live event panel before spending anything. A repeated item name does not prove that the old scoring rules or redemption NPC still apply.

Stop and verify these three failure signals

  • The phrase is not in the table: check spelling, language, and both strings. A post-launch addition needs current-client confirmation.
  • Haggling appears without Barter or Hoarding: do not force either answer. Capture the full text and verify the other phrase.
  • The NPC has no Decipher option: confirm that the item is a usable Cipher, that the correct character is selected, and that no quest or menu state is blocking the interaction.

These checks protect the one decision that matters. The item source is random, but the camp handoff is controllable: preserve both words, match the named NPC, and only then commit the decipher.

Sources and current-client boundary

Official records on the Steam store and developer website confirm the title and supply the August 7, 2026 client boundary. Two current walkthrough references independently support the NPC vocabulary, with the more specific source resolving the paired Haggling cases. Gylden Rush’s expired rules remain outside the evergreen answer, as do fixed drop rates, an unverified trio multiplier, and any phrase added after August 10 without confirmation.
