Find the elevator early, then set a cutoff for optional rooms while the squad still has time to return. The mission timer changes enemy spawns and the safety of that route.
Version check: compare your installed timer with Update 01 and the 01.02 to 01.03 patch notes available on August 12, 2026. Update 01 changed the interface and added Assault Pace, so older videos can show a materially different decision window.
Pick Assault Pace for the job of this expedition
Assault Pace modifies the time available on each floor and the experience awarded. It does not simply label three skill levels.
| Pace | Use it when | What success should look like |
|---|---|---|
| Cautious | The squad is learning facilities, a new Reclaimer, or unfamiliar Risk Vectors. | The team reaches the elevator with a repeatable route and can explain which detours paid off. |
| Standard | The group understands the cave loop but still needs to make real tradeoffs. | At least one optional opportunity is deliberately declined rather than accidentally abandoned. |
| Reckless | The exit-first route is already consistent and the team wants a compressed, higher-reward test. | No player needs to discover the elevator or debate an upgrade after the urgent segment begins. |
If a Cautious run repeatedly reaches the elevator with a large reserve, move to Standard. If Standard repeatedly enters Critical during an event or on the return path, improve the cutoff before reducing combat time. Pace cannot repair indecision.
Read a floor as four timer states
Update 01 made the last part of the bar visually distinct and added a numerical countdown at the point where Reaperworms become relevant. Use that interface to assign a different job to each state.
- Opening: leave the starting facility with roles understood and start tracing the elevator cable immediately.
- Build window: collect Expenite, clear the direct route, and use facilities that solve a current weakness.
- Urgent segment: stop opening new branches. Finish only an action whose exit and duration are known.
- Critical: abandon value collection and execute evacuation. The cave now applies escalating pressure rather than offering a fair final search window.
The timer pauses while the squad is making an upgrade choice at the relevant interface, but that does not make the route to the interface free. Judge the detour before interacting, not after reaching it.
Find the elevator before spending the floor
The powered cable is the floor’s most important navigation clue. Follow it far enough to identify the elevator and the approach that must be defended. Once the exit is known, the team can price every remaining detour in real travel time.
On a branch, leave a clear marker or make a short directional call before turning away. A vague “exit is over there” is not useful after a swarm changes everyone’s orientation. If the return path needs a traversal tool, place or reserve that route while the room is calm. The cutoff must include travel, regrouping, and the elevator defense; it is not the last second at which mining can stop.
Apply stop rules to optional value
Set a stop time before entering an optional room, and leave when it arrives even if the reward is still inside.
| Opportunity | Proceed when | Abort when |
|---|---|---|
| Expenite loop | The next deposit immediately funds a known upgrade and the exit remains clear. | The vein opens a new room or the team cannot name what the purchase fixes. |
| Workbench or BioBooster | The offer can repair a weapon, tool, or class-loop weakness already observed. | Reaching the facility requires another uncertain combat room during the urgent segment. |
| Expenite event | The squad has enough time for its wave, recovery, and the elevator defense as separate commitments. | A natural wave begins near the event start or the exit has not been found. |
| Camera or Intel detour | The route is short, visible, and the persistent reward matters to current progression. | The path is still expanding when the timer enters its distinct final segment. |
Keep enough time in reserve to finish the elevator defense after any earlier combat ends.
Do not stack an event, a natural wave, and the elevator defense
An Expenite event can create its own combat demand. The floor can also produce a timed wave, and activating the elevator introduces another forced defense. Starting one while another is about to arrive is how a manageable build becomes surrounded without a recovery window.
Before an event, check the timer marker, ammunition, and the route to the exit. If ordinary enemies begin arriving in a pattern that suggests the next wave has started, clear them and reassess rather than activating the event out of impatience. After the event, collect the reward, restore formation, and leave. Do not use the temporary feeling of relief as permission for a second unexplored branch.
Protect the exit sequence from one early activation
The player at the elevator controls a team-wide commitment. Use a ready call that confirms three things: everyone is on the return side of the cave, the approach contains no unresolved priority target, and any planned ammunition action is complete. Then start the sequence.
During the defense, hold traversable space around the objective. Chasing a low-health enemy outside that space can pull two players away and turn a repair interruption into a down. If the squad must rotate, move together along the pre-cleared side instead of scattering through unexplored terrain. Board when the elevator is ready; the timer has already made the reward decision.
Critical state is an evacuation problem
When the countdown expires, the cave does not present a final wave to clear. Corespawn pressure continues and Reaperworms enter the hunt. Patch 01.02 gave Reaperworms full elemental immunity, so attempting to stabilize the floor by burning one down is the wrong objective.
The developers’ July 9 explanation says additional Reaperworms begin arriving roughly 30 seconds after the first, with the exact rate affected by team size. Treat that as an escape grace period, not a damage check:
- Drop mining and optional interactions immediately.
- Move along the known route instead of fighting in the room where Critical began.
- Use control and traversal to preserve forward movement; do not spend every cooldown on enemies behind the group.
- If a worm grabs a Reclaimer, the remaining players should continue the evacuation plan rather than turning the cave into an indefinite rescue fight.
Recover the missing dwarf on the next stage
A Reclaimer taken by a Reaperworm is removed from the rest of that stage. The expedition can still continue if another player reaches the elevator. On the next stage, the missing dwarf appears cocooned and can be rescued.
This changes the next floor’s opening priority. Locate and free the cocoon before starting a detour or optional fight, then give the rescued player space to rejoin the squad’s ammunition and upgrade rhythm. The recovery mechanic is not permission to ignore every down: it is a last route for preserving the expedition after the timer plan has already failed.
Diagnose the timer error that happened first
| Visible failure | Earlier error to test | Next-run correction |
|---|---|---|
| Critical begins far from the elevator | The exit pass was delayed by mining or a side room. | Assign the cable trace before the first optional split. |
| An event wave overlaps a floor wave | The start decision ignored the timer marker. | Require a clean combat interval before activation. |
| The squad reaches the exit but cannot defend it | The cutoff reserved travel time but not regrouping and ammunition. | Move the cutoff earlier by one full recovery window. |
| Reaperworms scatter the group | Players tried to clear Critical instead of escaping it. | Save mobility and control for the known return route. |
| Reckless produces no extra usable value | The group was still discovering facilities and negotiating every choice. | Return to Standard until calls and cutoffs are automatic. |
Check the timer against the current build
Rogue Core entered Early Access on May 20, 2026, and Update 01 substantially revised this system within its first month. Verify major changes through the official Steam listing and developer patch notes. Exact floor durations can vary with mission and Assault Pace, so the actionable signals are the current interface segment, the countdown, the known elevator route, and the squad’s declared cutoff.
