The Alley Walkthrough: Ghost Coffers, Five Elements, and the Rite

A dark Korean alley and the phone investigation counter in The Alley

The Alley does not ask for one memorized path. It asks you to survive three escalating investigation loops, read the bracelet correctly, and turn each completed report counter into the next key, Ghost Coffer, or Source. The safest first clear is therefore checkpoint-based: trust the eye counter and the current objective, not a remembered left turn in a maze that keeps changing its threats.

Spoiler and version boundary: this walkthrough follows the full story through the Rite of Dissolution. It was prepared on August 12, 2026, after the official 1.5.6 update dated August 7. That patch fixed some achievement unlocks and mobile-phone UI, so update before doing achievement cleanup. Phenomenon positions and individual scares are not treated as fixed; the counters, keys, puzzle relationships, and ritual matches are the route anchors.

Three loops, three different gates

Investigation Report target What opens the exit
First loop 6 accepted phenomena Keys of Truth and Memory, all Ghost Coffers, then the Jangseung Source
Second loop 8 accepted phenomena Keys of Ill Fate and Grudge, all Ghost Coffers, then the Five Elements sewer puzzle
Final loop 10 accepted phenomena Key of the Akgwi, Maewol’s Coffer, Key of Yeonhwa, the Inner World, and the Rite

A correct report lights a candle in Grandma’s reply and advances the eye icon. A wrong report wastes time and leaves the phase unresolved. When the counter is full, stop hunting ordinary differences. Read Grandma’s new message, open every available coffer, and follow the new Source objective.

Let the bracelet decide how you investigate

The bracelet grows brighter as you approach a photographable phenomenon. Search in short loops: check the bracelet, scan nearby objects through the camera, and only commit to a report when the change fits one of the two categories.

  • Aberration: an impossible trace of supernatural interference. A physical object behaving in a way reality cannot support belongs here.
  • Deception: something disturbing that still has an ordinary explanation. The tutorial’s green-painted cat is the model: alarming, but physically possible.
  • Deadly phenomenon: the bracelet and phone warning turn red and normal phenomena disappear. Give this state priority over the report counter.
The red deadly phenomenon warning on the phone in The Alley
A red phone is a survival state, not another photo assignment. Break line of sight before resuming the investigation.

Cold or sudden chill signals that the pursuing ghost is close. Do not raise the camera at it and do not send it as a report. Turn your view away, keep obstacles between you and the threat, and move until the red state clears. Staring to confirm what you saw is exactly the wrong test: the hunter can notice you while you are trying to frame it.

If the bracelet glows but the scene still looks normal, change distance and angle before guessing. Small impossible changes can sit above eye level, behind glass, inside a screen, or at the edge of an object. If Grandma rejects the category, re-examine the same area instead of roaming the entire alley immediately.

Loop one: turn six reports into the first Source

Follow the ringing phone into the alley and complete Grandma’s tutorial. Photograph the painted cat and report it as a Deception. From that point, the counter at the upper right is the route.

  1. Find and correctly classify the first three phenomena. The third accepted report awards the Key of Truth.
  2. Inspect readable objects as they appear. The Weathered Book explains the Yeonhwa line and the bracelet, and taking it prevents a later document hunt from starting with an avoidable omission.
  3. Continue to six accepted reports. The sixth awards the Key of Memory.
  4. When the objective changes, stop searching for a seventh phenomenon. Use both keys to find and open every Ghost Coffer.
  5. Inspect the Ancient Folk Painting from the coffer sequence. The blue butterfly that appears afterward is a navigation cue, so follow it rather than continuing a general alley sweep.
  6. At the blue-lit pocket, identify the Jangseung as the Source. Photograph it, send it to Grandma, and let the scene transition finish.

The common stall is reaching 6/6 but continuing to use the camera on street details. At that point the investigation job is complete. The active job is now coffers, then the Source. If the butterfly is absent, reopen the objective and confirm that every coffer tied to the two keys has actually been opened and its contents inspected.

Loop two: solve the Four Statues with generation, not restraint

The second investigation raises the target to eight. The reviewed route awarded the Key of Ill Fate at four accepted reports and the Key of Grudge at eight. Collect the Torn Fragment and The Tale of Eunhong while moving through the loop, then open all coffers after the counter fills.

The Source sends you into the sewer and presents a Five Elements note. Its red statements describe restraint; its green statements describe one element generating or strengthening another. The altar wants the green relationship. Put the statue named in the left column on the pedestal in the right column:

Statue in hand Correct pedestal Reason
Wood Water Water generates Wood
Earth Fire Fire generates Earth
Water Metal Metal generates Water
Metal Earth Earth generates Metal

Each correct placement advances the statue objective from 0/4 to 4/4. A wrong placement produces no progress and points you back to the Five Elements note; it does not mean the entire puzzle has reset. Once all four are restored, the concealed central Fire figure is revealed. Photograph that central figure as the Source and send the image to Grandma.

Do not confuse the pedestal label with the statue label. For example, Wood does not return to Wood; it goes to Water because the altar is asking which element nourishes it. That single reading rule solves all four placements.

Loop three: use Maewol’s Coffer to reach the sealed room

The final alley counter is 10. The pursuit is more aggressive, and messages such as “Watch over the child” are pressure cues rather than a reason to abandon the investigation. Use any protective route the current objective exposes, keep treating a red bracelet as an emergency, and finish the ten accepted reports.

The Key of the Akgwi appears during this loop. Pick it up when awarded, but do not mistake that key for the end of the report phase. Continue until the eye reads 10/10, then follow Grandma’s instruction to open all Ghost Coffers.

  1. Inspect Maewol’s Coffer instead of walking past it as scenery. Rotate it when prompted and open the wooden coffer.
  2. Take the Key of Yeonhwa from inside. This is the item that advances the route away from the street.
  3. Read Grandma’s messages until the objective becomes “Find the door marked with the Yeonhwa symbol.” Do not keep searching for another coffer after that state change.
  4. Use the marked door and enter the sealed ritual area. Inspect the Rite of Dissolution and Inner World records around the altar before activating the passage.

The records establish the important gameplay boundary: Maewol could seal the Akgwi but could not complete the true Rite, while Soyeon’s Yeonhwa blood lets her enter the Inner World. This is why a new door and ritual objective replace the earlier photograph-and-report loop.

Search the Inner World without feeding the hunter

Inside the blue-lit Inner World, exploration changes again. Read Eunhong’s Diary and the Ghost Blood Herb record, then locate Yeonhwa’s Ring. Equipping it with the bracelet makes hidden ritual objects shine. If the objective still says to find the three Rite items but no shelf stands out, watch the bracelet and scan for a cold blue outline rather than testing every prop.

The Inner World ghost reacts to sound. Hold your breath and move quietly before it detects you. If detection has already happened, stealth is no longer the immediate answer: sprint out of its line of sight, then slow down after the visual threat is broken. Trying to crouch directly in front of it only gives the hunter more time to close.

Collect all three highlighted items:

  • Bloodstained Handkerchief
  • Red Thread & Sewing Kit
  • Norigae

The item counter must read 3/3. The warning that follows the Norigae is an exit signal. Stop searching the shelves, break contact with the hunter, and return to the ritual altar with the complete set.

Match the three keepsakes to the incense burners

The burner labels describe the relationship between Eunhong and each object. Match the meaning, not the item’s shape:

Incense burner Required item How the clue resolves
Ghost’s True Name Bloodstained Handkerchief It is the object marked with the Akgwi’s name from life.
Ghost Relic Norigae Eunhong’s diary identifies the pendant as the keepsake she cherished.
Ghost Affliction Red Thread & Sewing Kit It answers the burner asking for the object the Akgwi fears.

If a burner remains inert, remove the assumption that the three slots are left-to-right inventory order. Reinspect its label and select the item by meaning. After all three matches are accepted, follow the scripture interaction, inspect the changed portrait, and use the camera when the Rite asks you to confront what has appeared. The story confrontation begins only after the ritual state has fully advanced.

Finish the rite, then close every phone thread

During the final scene, keep following the interaction prompt rather than searching the chamber for another item. When the alley returns to daylight, the game gives one last ordinary-looking task: reply to all texts. Open every conversation carrying an unread marker and advance each thread until the objective clears. Walking to the end of the street while messages remain unread can make the ending look stalled.

The completion signal is the resolved conversation with Grandma and the transition into the closing sequence. At that point the dependent route is finished: three report counters, three coffer phases, two Sources, the Key of Yeonhwa, the Inner World set, and the Rite have all been closed in order.

Keep achievement cleanup separate from this first clear

Steam currently lists 10 achievements, but this route is not presented as a 100% ledger. The official list includes conditions for every illusion, every document, a no-death clear, and a phone photo of the alley’s “true owner.” The supplied full run confirms the story checkpoints and major documents needed above; it does not provide a reliable, version-matched proof of every illusion spawn or every collectible position.

Use the completed story run to learn the deadly-phenomenon escapes and both puzzles. Then attempt Avoid Death on a clean run after updating to 1.5.6 or later. For Owner of the Reaper’s Book and Historian of the Alley, audit the in-game Notes and achievement state instead of assuming that the mandatory records in this walkthrough are the entire optional set.

The Alley is a single-player first-person psychological horror game by AIXLAB, published on Steam by Smilegate and Thermite Games. Check the official Steam page for the current client and the official 1.5.6 update notice if an achievement or phone screen behaves differently. The route above deliberately avoids fixed anomaly coordinates, an unverified full collectible list, and a claim that the supplied video proves every achievement.
