Backrooms Anomaly Endings Guide: Finish the 50-Anomaly Catalogue

Backrooms Anomaly hazmat Warden in the looping corridor

The exit streak and the anomaly catalogue are two different jobs. Ten correct calls can end a run while dozens of Hard-mode discoveries are still missing; that is the route to Ending 1, not the true exit. The reliable order is to take that early ending once, continue the same discovery save, drive the Hard counter from 50 to zero, and only then finish another ten-call streak.

Build boundary: as of August 12, 2026, the relevant official changes are the July 25 launch patch and July 27 performance update. The official pool sizes are 30 anomalies on Normal and 50 on Hard. The developer also corrected Full Catalogue so that it requires the entire 50-entry Hard pool. If a later patch changes those counters, trust the values displayed in your difficulty menu and terminal.

Read the terminal as two separate objectives

The terminal is not showing one combined progress score. Its upper number tracks unique anomalies that have not yet been discovered. Its lower number tracks consecutive correct corridor calls. That distinction explains why a clean ten-call run can still lead to the wrong exit.

Terminal value What changes it What it controls
Undiscovered anomalies Finding a previously unseen catalogue entry and making the correct return call Whether the true exit is available after the catalogue reaches zero
Detection streak Any correct decision, including correctly accepting a clean corridor Whether an exit attempt triggers when the streak reaches ten

A wrong call breaks the lower streak, but it does not erase discoveries already saved. The reviewed Hard run reached its first exit with 30 entries still unseen, continued with those 30 still on the terminal, and later completed the catalogue. Treat a broken streak as a short-term setback; treat the upper counter as the long campaign.

Freeze a baseline before you spend the streak

The guided opening gives you a clean corridor before the random pool takes over. Do not rush that pass. Stop at repeatable sightlines and memorize relationships, not isolated props: which poster sits beside which door, how many ceiling panels separate the lights, where the Utility chair faces, which shelf holds the telephone, and how the Warden normally occupies the hall.

Build a reference around fixed groups: door, poster, ceiling, cooler, side room, and end alcove. Official Steam screenshot.

Your first baseline should include these anchors:

  • Main hall: poster order, wall marks, carpet surface, fluorescent fixtures, ceiling vents, and the normal width of the corridor.
  • Utility: the chair, electrical panel, wall label, handle, and empty wall space around them.
  • Storage: shelf positions, rows of bottles and books, telephone, framed item, fire extinguisher, and the clear floor between the shelves.
  • Transition points: water cooler, noticeboard, exit sign, and the short end alcove with its plant and door.
  • Warden: its ordinary hazmat suit, approximate scale, patrol area, and natural stance. Presence alone is not proof of an anomaly.

If you cannot describe the baseline in that order, spend another clean pass observing rather than trying to preserve a streak. A five-second pause at every anchor costs less time than rebuilding a nine-call streak after guessing.

Make the call at the correct door

The rule is binary, but the direction matters. If the corridor is clean, keep moving and leave through the forward exit. If anything is wrong, turn around and go back through the entrance behind you. Do not approach a dangerous change merely to obtain a closer look; recognition is enough.

  1. Start from the entrance and check the full hall before committing to either door.
  2. If a large or active anomaly is already confirmed, stop the scan and return immediately.
  3. If the hall still looks clean, inspect Utility and Storage from their doorways, then check the cooler, ceiling, signage, Warden, plant, and final door.
  4. Use the forward exit only after every zone agrees with the baseline.
  5. At the next terminal, verify which number changed. That feedback tells you whether the call was correct and whether the anomaly was new.

The terminal is your error log. If the streak resets after a confident anomaly call, review the zone you thought had changed; the apparent difference may have been a normal Warden position or perspective shift. If the streak rises but the upper value does not fall, you either accepted a clean corridor or correctly recognized an anomaly already seen before.

Scan the loop in six fixed zones

Hard mode makes random wandering expensive because its extra entries include small prop, text, lighting, and character changes. Use the same scan order on every loop. The examples below are visual cues confirmed in the reviewed run; they are descriptions for recognition, not official catalogue names.

Zone Keep in memory Changes worth an immediate return
1. Floor and long walls Clean yellow walls, open carpet, corridor width, normal door spacing Black growth or puddle, scattered papers, beach balls, arrow marks, a new opening, or wall sections with impossible scale
2. Posters and signs Poster order, orientation, size, wording, and the direction of the exit sign Upside-down or mirrored art, duplicated or missing posters, altered warnings, wrong scale, or reversed letters
3. Ceiling and light Light rhythm, vent pattern, ceiling-tile alignment, and normal corridor brightness Moved or rotated fixtures, missing tiles, hanging objects, flicker, deep darkness, or an overexposed opening
4. Utility Chair angle, panel size and position, label, handle, and bare wall Moved or missing chair, duplicate or enlarged panel, changed door hardware, hidden writing, or an object occupying the empty space
5. Storage Shelf count, bottle and book groups, telephone, frame, extinguisher, and clear center floor New furniture or papers, changed shelf layout, missing or added props, a dark cable-like mass, or an active creature between the shelves
6. Warden and end alcove Normal suit color, body scale, patrol behavior, plant condition, and final-door silhouette Blood or color on the suit, unnatural size or pose, an unfamiliar figure, dead or displaced plant, balloon, or a changed door

Do not let an obvious Warden distract you from the surrounding props. The suit is part of the baseline, yet the run also contains Warden-related variants. Check it with four questions: Is the suit visually normal? Is the body the expected size? Is it standing or moving in a plausible place? Is the nearby wall and lighting unchanged? This separates a genuine character anomaly from an ordinary patrol position.

For active hazards, use a shorter rule. A red-lit figure at the far end, a creature emerging inside Storage, a spreading black floor shape, or sudden total darkness is already enough evidence. Turn around. Walking closer adds risk but no catalogue value.

Claim Ending 1 while the catalogue is unfinished

Wrong Way Out is the controlled premature finish. The reviewed route obtained it on Hard, with the upper counter still at 30. You do not need to reproduce that exact number; you need the terminal to show at least one undiscovered anomaly when the ten-call streak completes.

  1. If Hard is not available on a fresh save, finish a Normal run first. The July 25 patch added a direct Hard-start option to the Normal final screen.
  2. Enter Hard and confirm that the difficulty screen or first terminal shows the 50-entry pool.
  3. Make correct anomaly/clear calls until the lower counter reaches ten while the upper counter remains above zero.
  4. Take the exit sequence. The first ending explains that the streak found a possible way out, but undiscovered anomalies prevented the true escape.
  5. Choose Continue rather than New Game. The upper counter should retain the discoveries from the first phase while the streak begins again.

Before continuing, photograph or write down both terminal values. If Continue shows your remaining Hard discoveries, proceed. If it unexpectedly shows a fresh 50, stop and verify that you did not choose New Game; the July 27 update added a confirmation step specifically when a Continue save exists.

Turn Hard mode into a catalogue run

After Ending 1, the upper number becomes the priority. A duplicate anomaly can still produce a correct call and extend the streak, but it will not reduce the undiscovered count. That is why replaying only the large, obvious events does not finish Full Catalogue.

Use a six-row ledger matching the scan zones. When a correct call lowers the upper number, note the strongest change you saw and its zone. The description can be short—“Utility chair missing,” “Storage black cables,” or “exit sign reversed”—but record it only after the terminal confirms a new discovery. This prevents perspective changes and ordinary Warden motion from entering your catalogue notes as false entries.

When progress slows, change what you inspect, not the game rule:

  • Ten or more remaining: keep the full six-zone sweep. You are still likely to see obvious and medium-sized variants.
  • Two to nine remaining: pause longer on text, small shelf groups, door hardware, ceiling alignment, and the Warden’s suit. These are easy to wave through after many loops.
  • One remaining: compare every prop group against the clean reference before deciding. Do not convert fatigue into a forward guess merely because the corridor has no dramatic threat.

The reviewed run showed one anomaly remaining before the final discovery, then zero on the terminal. That zero is the meaningful checkpoint. A run advertised as “all anomalies” is not verified by playtime or by seeing many dramatic events; it is verified by the Hard-mode terminal and the corrected Full Catalogue requirement.

Build the final ten only after the top counter reaches zero

Once the catalogue reads zero, stop optimizing for new encounters and protect the lower streak. Use the same six-zone scan, but make conservative calls. A duplicate still counts as a correct decision, and a clean corridor still requires the forward exit.

  1. Confirm the terminal shows zero undiscovered anomalies.
  2. Begin the streak from that terminal state, counting only calls confirmed by the next terminal.
  3. At five, keep the routine unchanged. Speeding up because Steady Eyes has triggered is a common way to miss a small prop change.
  4. At nine, inspect all six zones. The tenth decision is not exempt from the anomaly check.
  5. After ten, follow the true-exit sequence into the elevator. The reviewed Ending 2 card explicitly confirmed Hard completion.

If you reach another ending while the upper number is not zero, the route is still incomplete: Continue and resume the catalogue. If the upper number is zero but the exit does not open, the likely issue is the lower streak, so keep making verified calls rather than searching for a fifty-first anomaly.

Use the achievements as recovery diagnostics

The eight Steam achievements provide useful checkpoints without replacing the terminal. Their visible conditions can tell you which half of the route has registered.

Achievement What it confirms If it is missing
First Steps Your first anomaly call registered correctly Recheck that you returned to the entrance after spotting the change
Steady Eyes You preserved five correct calls Use terminal feedback to identify where the streak is breaking
Wrong Way Out You reached an ending before clearing the catalogue Finish a ten-call streak while the upper counter is still above zero
Clocked Out A Normal completion registered Finish Normal if you still need the direct route into Hard
Second Wind You recovered after losing a streak of at least five and then reached ten cleanly This is a recovery challenge, not required for the catalogue route itself
Full Catalogue The corrected 50-anomaly Hard catalogue registered Check that the Hard terminal, not a Normal run, has reached zero
Overtime The Hard completion registered Finish the zero-catalogue route and final ten-call streak
Something in the Suit The public achievement description is hidden Do not infer its trigger from the Warden’s ordinary presence; the developer intentionally withheld the condition

If Full Catalogue fails despite a zero-looking run on an older launch build, update the game first. The developer’s July 25 patch corrected that achievement to use the full Hard catalogue, and the July 27 patch adjusted Hard pacing. Re-run the final checkpoint only after confirming Steam has applied the current build.

The video below is by Ultimax Gameplay. Its public title, channel, duration, and chapter times were matched to the supplied 33-minute local recording before embedding. Ending 1 begins around 18:22; the true-exit sequence begins around 32:10. Use it to compare decision flow and scan zones, not as evidence that anomaly spawns follow a fixed order.

Build notes and official references

This guide uses the release version dated July 24, 2026 plus the July 25 and July 27 updates. The Steam store confirms the core return/continue rule, ten-call exit condition, two difficulties, counter system, and two endings. The official launch patch establishes the 30-entry Normal pool, 50-entry Hard pool, direct Hard start after Normal, and corrected Hard requirement for Full Catalogue.
