A successful ending run is decided before the rescue vehicle, ghost ship, shoreline, or Kraken appears. Each route consumes a different kind of progress: signal attempts for rescue, letters for human or ghost contact, three Heart pieces for the True End, direction events for land, or an active seagull chain for the feather ending. Mixing those plans is how a strong survival run becomes a long wait with no valid finish.
This route map covers Don’t Sleep With The Fishes through version 1.1.4.2, the July 26, 2026 hotfix. Version 1.1.4 changed the Airplane and Cargo Ship endings from pure repeated luck into a signal-and-timer process. Older guides that quote fixed rescue percentages or say one failed Flashlight permanently ruins the run are no longer current.

Commit the scarce item to one ending family
| Ending result | Route lock | Item or state to protect | What not to confuse it with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sailing to Safety | Cargo Ship chain | Bottled Paper plus Flare Gun or Flashlight | The Ghost Ship also takes you aboard, but awards the kidnapping result |
| Back to the Company | Airplane/Helicopter chain | A signal item and enough days to survive the rescue timer | Reaching land does not count as Company rescue |
| Sleeping With Ghosts | Ghost Ship | Two sent letters and a Flare Gun or Flashlight | This is an ending, but not a living rescue |
| True End | Heart of the Sea | All three distinct Heart pieces | An ordinary Kraken survival is not the True End |
| By your own means | Found Land | Direction-event history and a survived Kraken attack | The Midnight Tour island is a route marker, not the final shore |
| Sleeping with Feathers | Seagull chain | The first fed bird must remain aboard | Shooing or clicking the bird ends the active chain |
Make this choice during scouting. A Flare Gun occupies only one slot and is disproportionately valuable to rescue routes. Row creates an extra way to obtain one Heart component and lowers repair costs when his support appears, making him the route-specific crewmate for the True End. A Fishing Net or Bucket can claim the Red-event Heart piece. The Anchor is less glamorous but keeps a long route alive when Whirlpool, Restless Waves, Thunderstorm, or Kraken appears.
Do not call an ending attempt dead just because the desired event has not appeared. Randomized events remain part of the game. Call it dead when its prerequisite is gone: both signal tools are spent, the seagull was dismissed, the Ghost Ship letter count was never built, or the boat cannot survive the next night. That distinction prevents unnecessary restarts.
Use Cargo Ship signals for Sailing to Safety
Start by sending at least one Bottled Paper. Community-maintained event logic lists one sent letter as a condition for the Distant Ship chain. When a cargo ship appears, use the Flare Gun if the run is dedicated to this ending. The Flashlight is reusable and can register the route, but it is the slower and less dependable signal.
Version 1.1.4 gives this choice a visible strategic consequence even when the ending does not fire immediately. A correct signal starts a day timer. When that timer expires, the rescue-capable variant is guaranteed for the following night. The Flare Gun creates a shorter timer than the Flashlight; the original random chance can still rescue you before the timer finishes. After signaling, switch from exploration to preservation: keep food stable, repair the boat, and stop risking health for optional chests.
A failed Flashlight no longer permanently locks the chain. The official patch says another rescue chance can appear later, but the wait is longer. The recovery play is therefore to keep the Flashlight, send a letter if you have not already done so, and survive. Do not spend a remaining Flare Gun on a routine creature just because the first light signal produced no ending.

Keep the Airplane chain separate from the Cargo Ship
The Company result begins when the distant aircraft event accepts a Flashlight or Flare Gun signal. From there, the rescue-capable follow-up may be another Airplane appearance or the Helicopter. Current official rules apply the same timer principle used by the Cargo Ship: a correct first signal starts a countdown, the Flare Gun is faster, and a random early rescue can still happen.
Preserve at least one Bottled Paper use before the late aircraft follow-up. Community event records list a sent letter among the rescue-capable aircraft conditions. Frederik can occasionally send an SOS through conversation, which improves the route’s contact logic, but his dialogue is not a substitute for carrying a signal item when the actual aircraft appears.
The failure signal is easy to misread. Seeing an aircraft and returning to the next day is often progress, not a lost roll. If the Journal or event outcome indicates the signal was noticed, count days and stabilize the run. If no route state appears to have registered, continue protecting the light and flare because 1.1.4 allows a later opportunity after a failed Flashlight attempt.
The Ghost Ship is a kidnapping route, not a safe rescue
Send two Bottled Paper messages before expecting the Ghost Ship. Community client-logic notes place the event after the run has developed enough danger and time, so it is a poor target for a low-supply opening. Keep a Flare Gun or Flashlight for the encounter, then decide deliberately whether you want the ghost ending.
The Flare Gun commits the ending. The Flashlight can either increase danger and leave the run active or trigger the kidnapping. A Telescope only raises danger; sleeping leaves the ship alone. If the goal is Sleeping With Ghosts, use the Flare Gun. If the goal is a living Drowning clear, do not signal the Ghost Ship: community testing treats the kidnapping as a death result even though another vessel takes you aboard.
This distinction also resolves an old guide ambiguity. Sailing to Safety says “Get taken aboard,” while Sleeping With Ghosts says “Get kidnapped.” The ghost crew belongs to the latter. Use the Cargo Ship chain for the living taken-aboard result.
Build the Heart before The One replaces the Kraken
The True End needs three different components, not any three Heart drops. Keep a run ledger and mark each source:
- Red event component: use the Fishing Net to take the piece without breaking the tool, or use the Bucket and accept that it breaks. Sleeping through Red avoids this component and is useful only when you do not want the True End.
- Chest component: open utility chests whenever the boat and food economy can afford the three-energy cost. Do not leave a chest indefinitely; it can become a hostile mimic event.
- Fishing/Row component: fish repeatedly with bait and talk to Row. Row can supply the same component through rare dialogue, creating a second path to this part rather than a fourth unique piece.
Row is the safest crewmate choice for this route because his dialogue can remove one layer of fishing luck. Talk to him on Day 1 for the normal crewmate item handoff, then keep his hunger, sickness, and loneliness controlled so useful dialogue and support remain available. When repair support appears, use its two-energy reduction to restore expensive tools or the boat without consuming the entire day.
Once all three components are aboard, the next relevant encounter is The One, not an ordinary Kraken choice screen. Community client-logic records show that The One replaces Kraken when the complete Heart is present and triggers the ending without offering an item decision. If a normal Kraken asks you to pay the debt, your Heart is incomplete; do not assume three similar-looking pickups were three unique components.
An incomplete-heart Kraken is a survival crisis. Sleeping kills the captain. The Harpoon Gun inflicts devastating damage and is consumed. The Anchor is the least destructive answer, but even its better outcome can leave the boat at the edge of sinking and either break or remove the Anchor. Enter the late route with the captain and boat healthy, then repair immediately if the run continues.
Found Land is a long route with hidden history checks
By your own means is not awarded by visiting the small Midnight Tour island. The final Found Land event is a late-game shore and community client-logic gives it four important gates: the run must be deep enough, the captain must have survived a Kraken attack, and three direction records must exist.
Build those records by playing the navigation events instead of sleeping through them. Needs Direction supplies one marker, Dangerous Waters supplies another, and the Midnight Tour island supplies the third. Their names are not displayed as “direction1,” “direction2,” and “direction3,” so the practical check is a written list of the three encounters. When Midnight Tour appears, visit it or use the current crewmate option and verify the resulting Journal state rather than assuming the island itself is the ending.
Community notes place Found Land no earlier than the low forties, which explains why an otherwise healthy short run never sees it. Survive the ordinary Kraken first, repair the enormous damage, keep the Anchor replacement problem under control, and continue until the shoreline event asks whether to land. Choose yes. Choosing no discards the finish and returns the run to the event pool.
Feed the first seagull only when you accept the chain
At the Seagull event, Food or Bait makes the bird stay. Flashlight, Harpoon Gun, Fishing Net, or the other shooing choices remove it and prevent this event from returning in that playthrough; sleeping makes it leave but allows a later Seagull event.
Once fed, leave the bird alone during the day. Clicking it makes it depart and breaks the active route. New birds join through daily rolls, so the remaining task is ordinary survival: preserve food for the captain and crewmate, protect the boat, and do not trade away the only counter to a lethal night just to speed the flock.
Community references disagree about the displayed count at which the ending resolves: one describes three total birds and another describes three friends joining the first. Do not force a number that the sources cannot settle. The reliable checkpoint is behavioral: the first fed bird remains aboard, more birds continue to arrive, and Sleeping with Feathers unlocks only when the ending actually triggers.
Use the twelve achievements as a cleanup ledger
| Steam achievement | Verified description | Route checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping With The Fishes | Get killed | Any ordinary death result |
| Eating With The Fishes | Die of starvation | Let hunger, not event damage, deliver the final loss |
| Sleeping With Scraps | Sink with Dorothy | Remain away from the lifeboat when the opening evacuation expires |
| Sleeping with Feathers | Make too many friends | Feed the first seagull and keep the chain active |
| A Long Sail | Reach Day 50 | Survive the morning transition into Day 50 |
| Three for one! | Catch a Swordfish | Keep fishing; this is a rare catch, not an ending |
| Sailing to Safety | Get taken aboard | Finish the Cargo Ship rescue chain |
| By your own means | Reach land | Complete the direction and Kraken history, then accept Found Land |
| Back to the Company | Get rescued | Finish the Airplane/Helicopter chain |
| True End | Pay back your debt | Assemble all three Heart pieces and meet The One |
| Sleeping With Ghosts | Get kidnapped | Signal the Ghost Ship |
| Still Standing | Survive ‘Drowning’ difficulty | Reach a living successful result on Drowning |
Combine cleanup only when the requirements point in the same direction. A Day 50 run can also finish by Cargo Ship, Company rescue, land, or the True End. The Ghost Ship and seagull results deliberately end the run and should not be trusted for Still Standing. The three failure achievements are faster on separate Adventure runs than inside a prepared long voyage.
If an achievement does not register, check the exact result text before repeating the whole route. “Found by cargo ship,” “Found by the company,” “Reached land,” “Freedom,” and the kidnapping result describe different endings even when several involve another vessel or apparent rescue.
Version boundary and official credits
This guide was checked on August 13, 2026 against version 1.1.4.2 information. The July 25 update added rescue timers, three new night events, Coconut, sickness, and a new Frederik bait ability; the July 26 hotfix stopped run data from persisting between attempts. If a later update changes ending timers or event gates, follow the current Journal and official notes instead of old percentages.
Don’t Sleep With The Fishes is developed by Taiki and published by DopplerGhost. Identity, release information, achievements, and current patch boundaries come from the official Steam page and developer announcements. Detailed event gates and route outcomes were cross-checked against readable community guides and community-maintained client-logic references; unresolved seagull-count and older rescue-percentage claims were deliberately narrowed.
