Don’t Sleep With The Fishes Night Events: Item Counters and Failure Signals

The choose-an-item prompt during a stormy night in Don't Sleep With The Fishes

The night prompt is not asking which highlighted item can be clicked. It is asking which future problem you are willing to create. A Bucket may stop the Siren but begin the next day broken. A Flashlight can calm the angler fish but is also a route signal. A Harpoon Gun ends one attack cleanly and then disappears. Read the event, the likely loss, and tomorrow’s repair budget before committing the counter.

This field guide covers route-critical and high-damage events through version 1.1.4.2, dated July 26, 2026. The game randomizes events and several outcomes use weighted chances, so the tables describe controlled choices and failure signals rather than promising a fixed roll. Version 1.1.4 also added Friend Found, Junker, and Hunger; those are separated from older community tables so missing details are not invented.

Pack consequences, not a universal tier list

The opening gives roughly 20 seconds to scout and 45 seconds to scavenge. Your hand carries only three slots at a time, and a full hand slows movement, but deposited objects stay in the lifeboat while you make another trip. Use scouting to mark one three-slot object and several small route tools instead of trying to improvise after the horn.

Tool Carry cost Jobs worth protecting it for Spend signal
Anchor 3 slots Thunderstorm, Restless Waves, Whirlpool, ordinary Kraken survival Use when the alternative risks the boat or random cargo
Harpoon Gun 3 slots Shark Men; guaranteed escape from Death Stare at the cost of the weapon Spend only when health cannot tolerate the risky backup
Bucket 2 slots Shower Night, Bad Sleep, Leak, Eerie Melody, Red route Prefer it when a break is cheaper than losing a single-use item
Fishing Net 2 slots Windy Night, School of Fish, Red Heart component Do not waste it on a weak event if the True End route still needs Red
Flashlight 1 slot Bad Sleep, Death Stare, Shadow Figure, rescue and ghost signals Use defensively only when that loss does not kill the chosen ending
Flare Gun 1 slot Cargo Ship, Airplane/Helicopter, Ghost Ship commitment Reserve for a story vessel; it is single-use
Compass or Map 1 slot each Fog and navigation events A controlled break is often better than boat damage and extra danger
Duct Tape 1 slot Leak, Eerie Melody, item repairs Compare the one-time loss with repairing a reusable Bucket or Map

The lifeboat already includes a Fishing Rod and Repair Kit, so do not spend evacuation time searching for duplicates. Food and Bait each use one slot. Bring enough food to survive a weak opening, then use fishing as the renewable plan. As of 1.1.4, Frederik’s support no longer guarantees a catch; it prevents Bait from being consumed when a fish is caught that day. Fishing with Bait can also be toggled off, which lets you preserve it for a better day.

Before ending each day, ask four questions: Is the boat healthy enough to survive a bad outcome? Is the captain healthy enough to take unavoidable damage? Is a signal tool reserved for the route? Can tomorrow’s energy repair the counter that may break tonight? A highlighted item is not safe when its likely aftermath makes all four answers no.

Days 2–8 test repair discipline before lethal creatures arrive

Prompt or event Controlled answer Backup trade Bad signal
Shower Night Bucket Umbrella works but has more break exposure; sleeping usually risks only reduced energy Spending an Anchor or route signal on ordinary rain
Windy Night Fishing Net Map can be sacrificed for Food when supplies are worse than navigation Sleeping can damage the boat and break random items
Bad Sleep Bucket, Flashlight, or Swim Ring Umbrella works with a small break risk Sleeping starts the next day at two energy
Thunderstorm Anchor Bucket or Umbrella accepts damage or item loss Sleeping can combine heavy boat damage, lost cargo, and reduced energy
Dangerous Waters Map Compass has a less reliable clean outcome Sleeping adds danger and can remove nearly half the boat
Restless Waves Anchor Swim Ring can break or let the boat take damage Sleeping risks damage plus either one energy or a lost random item
Leak Bucket or Map Duct Tape solves it but is consumed Sleeping risks boat damage and a random item loss
Man in the Fog Compass There is no equally clean substitute Telescope raises danger; Flashlight and sleep can damage captain or boat

These events teach the most useful repair rule: pay energy to restore reusable coverage, not merely to make every icon look whole. A broken Bucket still deserves priority because it answers several later prompts. A broken Map is urgent only if the navigation events remain unresolved. A lost Flare Gun cannot be repaired, which is why sacrificing it to a non-route threat is usually worse than beginning tomorrow with less energy.

Dangerous Waters is a one-appearance navigation check. A Map has the strongest clean outcome; a Compass is less consistent; sleeping always damages the boat and raises hidden Danger. This event also contributes to the long Found Land history, so record that it happened even if the current run is not yet a land attempt.

Midnight Tour trades companion condition for safer loot

The small-island prompt can produce a Chest or Bait, but going personally can also cost health and the next day’s energy. Since version 1.1.3, a normal crewmate can be sent instead. That preserves the captain’s energy and avoids the personal island attack, but it is not free: community client-logic notes show a hunger cost, a sickness risk, and a small death risk for Laurel or Frederik after the first completed run. Row does not share that death roll.

Choose by condition, not by name. A hungry, sick, Lonely, or worse crewmate may already fail ordinary support checks and is a poor expedition choice. Feed and talk before the night if the island is valuable. If the run needs a Chest for the Heart component, Row’s item pool is especially useful; if the run only needs food stability, the captain may be better off declining than sending a fragile companion.

The Visit the small island choice during Midnight Tour in Don't Sleep With The Fishes

Version 1.1.4 added Coconut when the captain visits the Small Island personally. Eating it spends one energy in exchange for a strong hunger recovery and a smaller health recovery. That creates a real fork: send a healthy crewmate for their item pool, visit personally for access to Coconut and accept the attack risk, or decline because the route cannot absorb either consequence.

Days 9–17 separate flexible tools from one-use weapons

Death Stare: Flashlight first, Harpoon only when damage is unacceptable

The huge angler fish offers many highlighted objects, but most are traps disguised as variety. Flashlight is the usual least-bad answer: it commonly ends the encounter cleanly, with a lesser outcome that removes the light and leaves only one energy. The Harpoon Gun is deterministic but consumed. Reserve that certainty for a captain or boat that cannot survive another bad roll.

Umbrella, Food, and Fishing Net expose both captain and boat to severe damage in their bad outcomes. Sleeping has a small harmless branch but usually hits hard. The decision is therefore not “which item works?” It is “is preserving the Harpoon worth risking the Flashlight?” If the route still needs rescue, a lost Flashlight matters; if the later Shark Men event is likely to kill the captain, a spent Harpoon matters more.

Red: take the Heart deliberately or leave it incomplete

Use the Fishing Net to claim the first Heart component without breaking the tool. A Bucket also takes the component but breaks. Scuba Gear does not collect that piece and can return damage or Food instead. Sleeping causes modest boat damage and deliberately leaves the Heart incomplete.

That last option is strategic on a longest-survival run. Collecting all three Heart components makes The One replace the ordinary Kraken and forces the True End. If the goal is Day 50 or land, skip at least one component so the route is not closed by an automatic ending.

Whirlpool and Eerie Melody punish the wrong kind of thrift

Anchor is the controlled Whirlpool answer. It usually resolves cleanly; its bad branch causes small boat damage and breaks the Anchor. A Swim Ring accepts substantial damage. Sleeping can leave the boat critically damaged, remove two random items, or begin the next day with no energy. If the Anchor breaks, repair it before the event pool advances toward Kraken.

For Eerie Melody, choose between a broken Bucket and a consumed Duct Tape. The Bucket begins the next day broken and at one energy, but it can be repaired. Duct Tape prevents the direct damage but is gone. Umbrella lets the boat take a large hit; Telescope and sleep can injure both captain and boat. Preserve Duct Tape only when the Bucket can absorb the repair delay.

Shark Men: do not mistake the Scuba reward for a safe counter

Harpoon Gun is the safe answer and disappears after use. Scuba Gear is a gamble: one branch breaks the set but returns Food, while another breaks it, injures the captain, damages the boat, and leaves only one energy. A Swim Ring also exposes the run to heavy damage. Sleeping is usually dangerous even though it has a smaller harmless branch.

Use Scuba only when health and boat condition can absorb its bad outcome and the Food upside would rescue the economy. On Drowning or after Day 50, the Harpoon is normally the correct commitment. Community client-logic notes indicate night-event damage to captain and boat doubles from Day 50, turning several survivable branches into immediate losses.

Signals are event keys, not general-purpose defense

Distant Ship, Airplane, Helicopter, and Ghost Ship all highlight familiar tools, but their meaning is route progress. Version 1.1.4 changed the Cargo Ship and Airplane lines: using the correct signal starts a day timer, and the rescue-capable variant is guaranteed when that timer expires. The Flare Gun reaches that follow-up faster than the Flashlight. A failed Flashlight can still receive a later rescue opportunity.

Vessel Use when pursuing Signal decision Abort decision
Distant/Cargo Ship Sailing to Safety Flare for the faster current timer; Flashlight when preserving the flare Sleep if this is not the chosen ending and the signal must survive
Airplane/Helicopter Back to the Company Signal, then protect the run through the timer Do not spend the light on an unrelated low-risk night
Ghost Ship Sleeping With Ghosts Flare commits; Flashlight can commit or leave the run active Sleep if a living ending or Drowning clear is the goal

Bottled Paper creates the contact history these chains use. Community event records call for one sent letter in Cargo Ship and later aircraft states and two for Ghost Ship. Send them before the late event window, but do not drain the entire day when food, boat repair, or companion care is already failing.

Late companion events require reading the prompt, not the silhouette

Shadow Figure and Sick Crewmate can look similar. The reliable tell is the item list and dialogue. Flashlight is highlighted for Shadow Figure, whose speech is ominous; a genuinely sick crewmate says they feel ill and does not present Flashlight as the same solution. Use the Flashlight on the shadow. Using a Medkit on it loses the kit and inflicts severe damage.

Sea Watcher appears only with a normal crewmate. Staying awake preserves the companion but starts tomorrow with zero energy. Sleeping gives the crewmate a very high weighted chance of death. Check the boat before choosing: saving the crewmate with zero energy is not enough if an unrepaired hull will end the run at dawn, but sacrificing a healthy route-specific companion can remove the only Heart, repair, or food plan that made the voyage viable.

Companion condition is itself an event counter. Hunger, sickness, and loneliness can remove support options and prevent a crewmate from collecting daytime drifting loot. Talk before the status becomes Lonely, feed before Starving, and use a First Aid Kit before sickness reaches the dying state. Version 1.1.4 also introduced player sickness, which blocks eating for one to three days and can be cured by First Aid Kits; keeping the only kit for an actual illness is more valuable than using it as a wrong night-event answer.

Kraken survival leaves a repair emergency

An ordinary Kraken demands the Anchor. Sleeping kills the captain. Harpoon Gun is consumed while leaving both captain and boat near death. The Anchor is still brutal: one weighted outcome breaks it and takes almost all boat health plus a large captain hit; the other removes the Anchor. It is the least destructive answer, not a clean counter.

Enter the late event pool with full or near-full boat health. After surviving, spend the next day on the boat before fishing or opening a Chest. If the Anchor broke, use Row’s repair support if available; if it was lost, a Chest can replace it, and the Handyman can exchange a Chest for an Anchor. A Kraken survival is also part of the Found Land history, so record it even if the immediate goal is simply recovery.

If all three Heart components are complete, the event changes to The One and triggers the True End without an item choice. Seeing the normal Anchor/Harpoon/Sleep prompt is a diagnosis: at least one distinct component is missing.

Version 1.1.4 added three events without publishing counter recipes

The official notes define the new events narrowly:

  • Friend Found: when the ship was left without a crewmate, a later night can reveal one of the shipmates and allow a rescue.
  • Junker: a creature approaches the stored Junk and offers a trade.
  • Hunger: when the captain wakes starving with no Food, Junk becomes a last-resort meal.

Do not treat Junk as free Food. The update says repeated Junk eating raises sickness risk, and sickness prevents eating for one to three days. If Hunger appears, eat Junk only when starvation will otherwise collapse the run, then preserve a First Aid Kit and avoid committing tomorrow’s energy to optional actions.

The official patch does not list exact Junker trades, Friend Found selection odds, or a universal safe Hunger outcome. Community tables captured before 1.1.4 do not contain those events. Read the current prompt and compare the offered trade with the route inventory; any fixed counter list that omits this version boundary is incomplete.

Diagnose the morning before spending energy

  1. Boat: repair first if one more ordinary damage event could sink it. A route item does not matter on a collapsing hull.
  2. Captain: heal before a high-damage event window. Keep sickness distinct from wounds because sickness blocks Food.
  3. Route lock: confirm the Flare, Flashlight, Bottled Paper count, Heart components, or active seagull still exists.
  4. Broken counter: repair the item with the widest coverage in the next event range. Bucket and Anchor usually outrank a Map after its navigation check has passed.
  5. Crewmate: feed, heal, or talk before expecting support or sending them for loot.
  6. Food engine: fish with Bait only after survival and route repairs are funded. Use Frederik’s current support on a day with several Bait, because it preserves Bait on successful catches rather than guaranteeing them.

If a run still fails, classify the first irreversible loss. “The Kraken killed me” may really mean the Anchor was spent on Thunderstorm and never replaced. “The rescue never came” may mean a light was consumed by Death Stare. “The companion died” may mean Sea Watcher was slept through after loneliness had already removed their practical value. Fix the earliest lost option, not only the final animation.

This guide was reviewed on August 13, 2026 for the latest listed official build boundary, version 1.1.4.2. Taiki created the game, with DopplerGhost as publisher. Check the official Steam page and developer announcements after any update that changes events, Bait, rescue timers, sickness, or damage.

The detailed choice outcomes were reconciled across readable player guides and a community-maintained client-logic reference. Their old rescue percentages were superseded by the official 1.1.4 timer rules, direct Fandom pages were blocked during capture while its readable API remained available, and the three newly added events were kept to the facts in the developer’s announcement.
