Don’t Let It Starve has 31 Steam achievements, but the list is not 31 unrelated errands. It is a dependency chain: room puzzles unlock drinks and a toque, ordinary wins open more toques, four difficulty stars lead to the real escape, and several one-run feats become much easier after those systems are available. This roadmap is for the full release under the latest listed official boundary, Patch 1.2.X. It contains puzzle codes and ending spoilers.
Protect one progression run and one disposable run
Use a normal run to buy permanent unlocks, solve the room, and advance toque stars. Use a separate throwaway run for deliberate failure, discarding a winning bento, and grinding your arm. This separation matters because the first four quotas are also your cheapest opportunity to buy tools, build food values, and set up cumulative unlocks. There is no reason to destroy a promising shop just to clear a five-second achievement.
| Early achievement | Controlled action | Readback before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Damn, if I had just one more bento | On the disposable run, ring the bell without making enough food and miss the quota. | The run ends and Steam records the first-death achievement. |
| Desperate times call for desperate measures | Use the grinder that sits on the bento station’s left side. | Your arm is ground and the achievement appears; do not test this during a valuable attempt. |
| Now that’s confidence | Build a bento, hover the chef to expose the projected result, confirm it would clear the round, then discard that bento. | The preview must show a winning result before the discard. Throwing away an arbitrary tray is not the same test. |
| HAHA, you little piece of shit | Pause room tasks long enough to spot the rat crossing the floor, then click it. | The rat disappears and the achievement registers. Treat the timing as random rather than abandoning a run after one quiet minute. |
Solve the room in an order that creates useful unlocks
The four puzzle achievements are worth doing before the harder toque stars because they create permanent options. The sliding puzzle needs all three pieces: one is beside the bar, while the other two enter the tool-shop pool. Do not keep sliding an incomplete board. Once all pieces are present, reproduce the bottle silhouette in the backing image. The success signal is the Gin unlock and You go here, you go there.
The safe is a clue puzzle even though the answer is fixed. Obtain the UV Flashlight, turn it on with the control the client displays—community references identify F or right D-pad—and inspect the invisible marks. The documented safe code is 75203. Enter it, confirm that the safe actually opens, and verify Finding pieces plus the Consistency Toque. Patch 1.2.X specifically fixed an old case where players migrating from the demo could open this safe and receive nothing; if the container opens empty on a current build, update and restart before repeating the clue hunt.
Number the four bells from left to right. For I know this song, play 4-2-3-4-2-1. For Alla mattina, play 1-2-3-4-2, 1-2-3-4-2, 1-2-3, 4-3-2, 4-3-2, 4-4-4. These are different checks on the same instrument; completing one does not prove the other. Wait for the achievement or audible success response before leaving the bells.
Two updated achievement references associate the short bell puzzle with Vermouth, while a post-patch bar guide says the bottle arrives after the 333,333-point round. Because the sources do not settle that conflict, use the current client’s bar and achievement readouts as the authority. The safe code, both bell sequences, and the sliding-puzzle dependency are not affected by that disagreement.
Take the false escape once, then turn stars into the real route
A standard win climbs through eight displayed meat requirements: 400, 1,000, 5,000, 20,000, 50,000, 125,000, 333,333, and 666,666. After clearing the last one, take the promised key, open the locked door on the left, and crawl through. That first exit gives Wait, I thought I was free. It also opens another toque, which should trigger Ugh, I was already tired of that one.
The real escape is not a different door puzzle. Perfect one toque by clearing all four of its stars. The difficulty changes progress from a normal clear to a timer on every bento, divided bento sections, and finally irregular shapes. After the fourth-star clear, use the same exit route. The changed ending awards I’m free!. Accept the cupcake offered afterward for He is cute! and a persistent option to skip one round on later attempts. If the ordinary scare plays instead, check the selected toque’s star display; a basic win is not a perfect clear.
Turn the six strategy achievements into instrumented runs
These achievements are less about luck than about preserving the condition until the exact scoring moment. Read the live tool and dish text before committing: Patch 1.1.x changed the difficulty ramp and dish availability, while Patch 1.2.X adjusted some dish rarities and repaired several item calculations.
| Achievement | Build target | Trigger and failure signal |
|---|---|---|
| Plim, plim, plim, plim, plim, plim… | Create six or more bonus triggers from one plating. A Gin-and-Vermouth Dry Martini repeats line bonuses; Shrimp Bisque is another documented repeat source. | The count must come from a single plated food. Six bonuses spread across a whole bento will not satisfy that wording. |
| That’s basically a Big Mac | Carry a multiplier and repeatable bonus engine into late quotas, then make one bento reach 100,000 points. | Judge the bento’s preview, not the round total. Several smaller bentos adding to 100,000 do not prove the target. |
| Where did you even get that many bentos? | Start from Grandma’s four bentos, then add temporary or persistent bento sources such as Lobster, Extra Bento, or Golden Bento. | The counter must show six in the same round. Six made across consecutive rounds is not enough. |
| Legendary, babe! | Reach the shop state where a Legendary tool appears and buy it. Matryoshka Doll can convert a later shop to Legendary stock. | Seeing or receiving a Legendary Chef’s Dish is not the same as purchasing a Legendary tool. |
| I guess I’m out of space | Fill every currently available table slot with tools. Space-expanding effects can raise the amount you must fill. | Count empty outlines after the last purchase. A larger table with one open position is still incomplete. |
| Anachievment | Hold Telescope, Compass, and Lucky Horseshoe together, then reroll a food while building a bento. | Owning the trio is setup, not the trigger. Perform the reroll and wait for the achievement readback. |
Open the toque tree before perfecting its leaves
Can I call myself a chef now? asks for every toque to be unlocked, not perfected. Several perfection achievements sit behind a prior win, so first expose the whole tree. Grandma’s Toque is available at the start. A normal win opens Penny-Pincher’s; beating Penny-Pincher’s opens Magician’s. The safe opens Consistency, and a Consistency win opens Equality. Accumulating 300 coins across play opens Golden, whose win opens Seasoning. Reaching 100 full-bento bonuses opens Retrigger, whose win opens Potion. A Grandma win opens Void.
| Perfection achievement | Toque entry gate | Practical emphasis for higher stars |
|---|---|---|
| Grandma would be so proud | Starting toque | Use its generous opening bento count to learn timer, section, and shape restrictions. |
| All my bentos look the same | Open the safe | Exploit the five base food rerolls deliberately; concentrate upgrades into a small group of common foods. |
| Workers of the world, unite | Win with Consistency | Because Equality averages plated values, lift weak base food values instead of relying on one spectacular outlier. |
| You don’t need to eat that much | Win with any other toque | Small bentos pay coins; protect multipliers and rerolls rather than buying more economy than the toque needs. |
| Guess I’m Houdini now | Win with Penny-Pincher’s | The larger starting tool table helps only if you fill useful slots early and sell effects that no longer serve the build. |
| I come from money, you know | Accumulate 300 coins | Use the 15-coin start to establish the engine; reset an obviously dead opening shop before investing a long four-star attempt. |
| It’s all about the seasoning | Win with Golden | Trust the current toque panel for its star restrictions; the supplied references do not support a fixed best build. |
| Swe-swe-swe-sweet | Earn 100 full-bento bonuses | Retrigger repeats the small full-bento reward, so bring stronger line bonuses and keep completing trays under the star restriction. |
| Let’s consume everything | Win with Retrigger | The shop is consumable-focused. Secure multiplier help at the bar and value Cocoon because it can still produce a lasting tool. |
| Beauty lives in the negative space | Win with Grandma | Build around the live Void rules shown in your client; neither official patch notes nor the supplied readable guides justify a permanent item prescription. |
Close the collection achievements with readbacks, not assumptions
I’m not drunk, I swear requires all four bar bottles. Gin comes from the sliding puzzle. Vodka and Red Bitter must enter your permanent bar options after their Legendary shop purchases. For Vermouth, resolve the conflicting community gate by reading the current bottle slot and achievement state after both the bell puzzle and the late quota. A recipe guide that displays an effect is not proof that your save has unlocked the bottle.
That’s a beautiful collection tracks the Compendium. The two detailed achievement references agree that the Steam achievement is satisfied by the tool collection; the 26 Chef’s Dishes are useful reference entries but are not required for that unlock. Audit silhouettes and their in-client requirements instead of waiting for random dishes. Finish Can I call myself a chef now? after the toque-select screen shows every toque, then finish each toque’s four-star line for the ten perfection achievements above.
A clean final count should read: eight story or direct-action achievements, four room puzzles, six strategy feats, three collection/toque-unlock checks, and ten toque perfection clears. If Steam still shows 30/31, compare the missing name against those five buckets. That identifies the required scene, puzzle, single-run build, persistent collection, or star clear without repeating the entire game.
Current release boundary and credits
Research cutoff: August 13, 2026, using the full release of Don’t Let It Starve, Steam AppID 3930510. Steam lists Eduardo Scarpato as developer, Black Lantern Collective as publisher, and June 12, 2026 as the release date. The latest official announcement captured for this review is Patch 1.2.X, dated June 23. Identity, achievement count, and media were verified on the official Steam page; routes were cross-checked against readable community guides. Where those guides conflict, the article gives a client readback instead of inventing a settled rule.
