Don’t Let It Starve Compendium Unlock Guide: Clear Every Active Requirement

The hard part of the Don’t Let It Starve Compendium is not reading 148 tool names. It is separating tools that merely need to appear from tools hidden behind counters, rank gates, puzzles, or multi-step dependencies. The Steam achievement That’s a beautiful collection is tied to the tool collection; readable achievement and inventory references agree that the 26 Chef’s Dishes are not required for that unlock. This guide turns the active requirements into a cleanup route under the full-release Patch 1.2.X boundary.

Audit silhouettes before starting another random run

Open the Compendium and make three notes for every missing tool: its displayed unlock condition, whether that condition is already complete, and whether the tool has actually appeared or been acquired. “Base set” means there is no separate challenge to grind; it does not guarantee that a Rare or Legendary entry will show up in the next shop. A requirement that has cleared but still leaves an undiscovered entry is a shop-exposure problem. A requirement with a visible counter is a task problem. Mixing those two states wastes runs.

Do the room-gated entries first. Buy both sliding-puzzle pieces and solve the board to expose its permanent reward. Buy the UV Flashlight, use the invisible clues, and open the safe with 75203. Ring the bell puzzle sequence 4-2-3-4-2-1. One inventory reference ties Elevator to ringing the bells, while the room puzzles also open systems needed elsewhere. Kill the floor rat to expose Sewer Rat. These actions change the pool; passive grinding does not substitute for them.

Clear the food-value ladder in deliberate runs

Several tools unlock when one food’s base value reaches a threshold. The word base matters: a giant final bento score or a temporary multiplier does not prove the requirement. Pick one food family, buy permanent-value effects for it, and check that food’s live value after each change. Stop the run only after the associated entry unlocks.

The captured Compendium guide contains a likely transcription problem around one “Yummiest” consumable and uses inconsistent capitalization for some tool names. Do not transfer a suspect food label into your run. Match the current client’s icon, description, and unlock counter; the thresholds above come from the explicitly named active unlocks, not from the consumable descriptions.

Batch plating counters by ingredient family

CounterTool unlockedHow to avoid a false count
25 of one specific foodButcher’s Cleaver, Hot Sauce, Just A Normal Chopstick, Just A Regular Hot Dog, Moldy Bread, Olive Stick, Pickle Jar, or Piggy SnoutThe food must be plated; seeing it in the selection or rerolling past it does not advance the documented action.
100 meatsCarnivore’s KebabUse Beef, Bacon, and Sausage across the same cleanup phase instead of forcing only one meat.
75 grainsCerealist’s FlourRice and Bread share this family, so pair the run with their two 25-plating counters.
150 vegetablesVegetarian’s RootOlive, Pickle, and Pepper all contribute; complete their three 25-plating tools along the way.
100 food-value increasesGolden TongsCount actual value increases, not raw placements. Use live value feedback to confirm the effect fired.

Food appearance effects and family-doubling tools make these runs faster, but rarity can change. Patch 1.1.x made Olives rarer, and Patch 1.2.X adjusted some Chef’s Dish rarities. If a historical route says a specific food is guaranteed, treat the current shop and dish screen as the authority.

Build the purchase and economy chain without selling its middle

Target toolRecorded requirementRoute discipline
3D PrinterBuy 100 toolsCheap zero- and low-coin purchases are useful only if they do not kill the run before the counter is saved.
Shopping BasketBuy 50 consumablesPair with a consumable shop engine; verify each purchase, not each appearance.
Black Credit CardSpend 200 coinsUse a stable income run. Holding 200 at once is not required by the captured condition.
Ambitious WalletHold 50 coins in one runStop restocking as the balance approaches 50; spending down at 49 repeatedly never clears it.
Cash RegisterSell 20 toolsCycle expendable tools after their effect is no longer needed.
Fake Dollar BillBuy 10 Spare Change consumablesSpare Change is the dependency. Other coin consumables do not substitute.
Golden BentoBuy 10 Extra Bento consumablesExtra Bento itself enters the pool after 30 total bentos, so clear that gate first.
Famous PaintingSell a Piggy Bank worth at least 10 coinsKeep Piggy Bank long enough for its sell value to grow, verify the displayed value, then sell it. Selling early resets the setup.
BrokeReach 0 coins ten timesUse exact zero, then confirm the counter. Ending with one coin does not count as broke.

Treat bento-state unlocks as controlled experiments

  • Brand-new Shoes: finish 20 bentos with at least one reroll unused. Stop spending the final reroll merely to improve an already safe tray.
  • Deck of Cards: place at least 10 foods in one bento. Use small shapes; ten squares are not automatically ten separate foods.
  • Eaten Dish: make 10 empty bentos. Do this where the remaining bento score can still cover the quota or in a deliberately disposable run.
  • Diet Pill: first unlock Eaten Dish, then make its effect reach +10 Mult. This is a dependency, not another ten-empty-bento check.
  • Cigar: make five bentos in one round. Temporary and persistent extra-bento effects can combine, but the live round counter must reach five.
  • Lunch Box: make 30 big bentos. Confirm the client classifies the tray as big; visual width alone is not a counter readback.
  • Glutton’s Belly: collect 10 full-bento bonuses in one run. A cumulative total across separate failed runs does not meet the captured wording.
  • Twisted Intestine: get four or more bonuses from one food plating 30 times. Track the single-plating event, not the total bonuses across the tray.
  • Three Eyes?: accumulate 100 bonuses. This broader counter can advance while working on Twisted Intestine.
  • Red Card: decline a Chef’s Special. Choose a round where rejecting the dish will not break your survival plan.

Reserve one run for odds, rerolls, and table conditions

Lucky Horseshoe unlocks after 20 successful chance outcomes. Use tools with visible odds so each success can be observed. Once it is available, combine it with Compass and Telescope: Compass can return a food reroll, Lucky Horseshoe improves chance behavior, and Telescope rewards rerolling. Performing a reroll with all three on the table also satisfies the documented Ana combo achievement.

“Fill your table with tools” is a separate table-state test. Count the current slots after any expansion. Black Matter and other space effects can increase the target, so adding space immediately before the check may move the finish line. Mirror received a Patch 1.2.X fix for cloning when the table was full; do not rely on its pre-patch failure as a way to freeze or duplicate the state.

Expose rank-gated stock instead of grinding the wrong difficulty

The captured inventory marks several tools as available only on rank 2 or higher: 666, Aged Cheese, Alarm, Day of the Deadline, Hourglass, Metronome, Stopwatch, and Whiskey. If one of those silhouettes remains, a long rank-1 shop cycle cannot reveal it. Move to the appropriate rank, stabilize the early quota, then spend rerolls or rarity support after the eligible pool is active.

Vodka and Red Bitter are Legendary shop purchases that become permanent bar options. Bar Glass is also Legendary. Buy the actual tool when it appears and confirm the Compendium/bar readback. A Chef’s Dish with a similar drink or glass theme is not the same inventory entry.

Use a short final audit instead of replaying every counter

  1. Filter missing entries into base-set exposure, active counter, rank gate, room puzzle, and dependency chain.
  2. Clear exact-value and 25-plating food pairs in the same run.
  3. Combine the 75-grain, 100-meat, and 150-vegetable totals with their component-food counters.
  4. Protect Piggy Bank, Spare Change, Extra Bento, and Eaten Dish until their downstream requirements are complete.
  5. Move rank-gated silhouettes to rank 2 or higher before spending shop rerolls.
  6. After a condition clears, re-open the Compendium. If the entry is unlocked but undiscovered, change from grinding the condition to exposing the item in eligible shops.
  7. Ignore the 26 Chef’s Dishes for the Steam collection achievement unless your personal goal is a visually full reference book.

If the achievement still does not register, use the current in-client requirement over the captured community wording. Patch 1.2.X corrected the DNA description and several item calculations; a live description can legitimately be more accurate than a June inventory transcription. This route promises reliable cleanup checkpoints, not a frozen claim that every label or rarity will remain unchanged.

Version and evidence boundary

Research cutoff for this route is August 13, 2026. Steam identifies AppID 3930510, developer Eduardo Scarpato, publisher Black Lantern Collective, and a June 12 release. Official identity, media, and live achievement wording came from the Steam store. The newest captured developer announcement is the June 23 Patch 1.2.X. Tool counts and unlock conditions were cross-checked against readable community inventory and achievement references. Suspect transcriptions, disputed bottle gates, and post-patch item behavior were narrowed to client verification rather than presented as permanent facts.
