Start with the symptom, not a random graphics preset. A false “VIP slots” message is usually a server-capacity race; a locked Squad Leader role can be a tutorial gate; an AMD crash has two official launch-option workarounds; and PS5 audio loss is a known issue without an official player-side fix. Treating all four as “bad optimization” sends the diagnosis in the wrong direction.

This troubleshooting guide is dated August 14, 2026 and uses Team17 and Expression Games’ first launch-day notice plus the pre-launch known-issues list. The game is live service and several items are actively under investigation. Recheck the newest official notice before applying an old workaround after a patch.
If the server looks open but refuses the connection
Launch demand caused the browser to show capacity information that could already be stale by the time a player joined. The developer is adding official servers across regions, but two symptoms can still appear:
- a server with visible spaces becomes full before the connection completes;
- a Community Server reports that remaining spaces are reserved for VIP players even when the displayed capacity suggests otherwise.
The official launch notice says that the VIP wording may be incorrect. It does not prove that your account needs VIP access or that a purchase is missing.
Use this order:
- Enable Hide Full Servers in the Server Browser.
- Choose a server showing 50 or fewer players; the developer specifically recommends that buffer because the listing can fill while you connect.
- If one Community Server repeats the reserved-slot message, try an Official Server or a different Community Server with more capacity.
- If multiple low-population servers fail in the same way, record the server names, region, time, and exact error before contacting support.
Do not spend the first troubleshooting pass reinstalling the game for one full-server error. A capacity race has no local file to repair. The failure becomes a client or account investigation only after it repeats across genuinely available servers.
If a leadership role is unavailable
On PC, Esc lets you leave the optional Getting Started lesson. Squad Leader and Commander are different: their associated tutorials must be completed before those roles can be selected.
Separate a gate from a bug:
- Confirm which role is unavailable.
- Complete that role’s tutorial and return to the unit screen.
- Check that the role is not already occupied or restricted by the current unit.
- If the required tutorial is complete and the role still cannot be selected in multiple servers, treat it as the launch-day role-selection issue that the team is investigating.
Repeating the tutorial may be a useful test only when completion did not save. It is not an official universal fix. Capture the completion state and the failed role screen so support can distinguish progression from server state.
AMD crash path: change one official variable at a time
The team reports stability issues for some AMD GPU users and offers two alternative Steam launch-option strings. Try the DirectX 12 path first unless your current setup already fails specifically under it:
-dx12 -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -malloc=system
Alternative:
-dx11 -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -malloc=system
Do not combine -dx11 and -dx12. They are alternatives. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, place one complete string in Launch Options, test the same reproducible scenario, then record the result before switching.
The official notice also says some affected players may improve stability by:
- setting the in-game graphics preset to High;
- disabling the In-Game Overlay in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
“High” looks counterintuitive as a crash workaround, which is why it should remain a controlled test rather than a general performance recommendation. Test launch option, preset, and overlay separately when possible. If three settings change at once and the crash stops, you will not know which change is safe to keep after the next update.
When reporting the crash, include GPU model, AMD driver version, chosen DirectX launch option, map and role, time played before failure, and whether the crash repeats at the same action. “Crashes randomly” is much harder to compare with the team’s crash data.
Reset video settings after the Crossplay Playtest
Players who joined the recent Crossplay Playtest on PC should reset Video settings to default so the launch build can recalibrate them. The pre-launch performance work changed defaults, application, saving behaviour, rendering, animation, and other systems. Carrying the old test profile forward can make launch behaviour look like a new hardware problem.
- Record or screenshot the current settings if you want to reproduce the old profile.
- Reset Video settings to default.
- Restart the game if the client asks for it.
- Test one live match or repeatable tutorial segment before custom tuning.
- Change one expensive option at a time and watch both frame rate and input response.
The official performance blog describes TSR and DLSS image reconstruction, Frame Generation for supported RTX 40-series and newer cards, and optional Hardware Lumen for high-end systems. These are not interchangeable fixes. Image reconstruction changes internal rendering resolution; Frame Generation raises perceived frame rate but can increase latency when the base rate is already low; Hardware Lumen adds GPU load for lighting and shadows.
Establish a stable base frame rate before Frame Generation. If mouse or controller response feels worse while the displayed frame rate rises, compare with Frame Generation off. If the GPU is already at its limit, disable Hardware Lumen before lowering every texture or view setting at once.
FSR and NVIDIA driver status at launch
FSR 4.1 is not available in the launch build. The developer says it has been implemented and is undergoing further testing for a future update. Do not follow a settings page that promises an FSR 4.1 menu or a fixed frame-rate gain on August 14.
The dedicated NVIDIA Game Ready Driver was delayed and, in the August 13 notice, expected early the following week. NVIDIA users were told to install the latest driver currently available in the meantime. Because that timing expires quickly, check the present official driver listing rather than treating “early next week” as a permanent instruction.
Match the PC against the official 1080p targets
| Component | Minimum target | Recommended target |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X | Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 5 7600X |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 30 GB available | 30 GB available |
| Official 1080p/60 note | TSR 71% or DLSS Ultra Performance | TSR 100% High or DLSS Balanced |
The minimum line already assumes reconstruction at a reduced internal resolution. A machine near minimum is not promised native 1080p at maximum settings. Compare against the stated target before diagnosing a failure to hold a much higher resolution, ray-traced lighting, or an unbounded frame rate as a defect.
Known launch issues that should not be “fixed” with invented steps
| Symptom | Official state | Safe player action |
|---|---|---|
| Audio cuts out on PlayStation 5 | Actively under investigation | Record platform, server, map, and which channel failed; check the newest known-issues notice. |
| Role remains unavailable after its tutorial | Role-selection reports are under investigation | Verify tutorial completion and test another server before reporting. |
| First deployment has no weapon in hand | Listed launch issue | Capture the state and report it; no universal official configuration fix is stated. |
| Gunner Fire or Gunner Alt Fire bindings reset after leaving Options | Listed launch issue | Recheck bindings after closing Options and document the reset before a live crew session. |
| VOIP speaker identity disappears while travelling through a tunnel | Listed launch issue | Do not misdiagnose it as a total microphone failure; report the tunnel context and affected channel. |
| Supply Helicopter supplies lack bullet collision | Listed launch issue | Do not rely on the supply object as cover. |
| Co-pilot loses right-trigger turning after the main pilot dies | Listed launch issue | Record the crew sequence and controller platform; check for a patch before repeating the role. |
| PS5 helicopter yaw continues after releasing the control | Listed launch issue | Report the control state; do not publish a permanent sensitivity workaround from one occurrence. |
A known issue can still deserve a report. The distinction is that a player should not erase settings, reinstall an operating system, or buy hardware because an unverified page presents a developer-side investigation as a solved local problem.
Build a clean support report
Use the official Hell Let Loose Help Centre when the controlled tests fail. A useful report contains:
- platform and storefront;
- CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, and driver version for PC problems;
- server name and region;
- map, game mode, faction, unit, and role;
- the exact error text or a screenshot;
- the shortest sequence that reproduces the problem;
- every launch option or setting changed during the test;
- whether the problem repeats after using defaults or another server.
Keep technical support separate from balance feedback. The support team handles crashes, bugs, and technical issues. Suggestions about weapons, factions, maps, or mode balance belong in the official community feedback channels. Routing the report correctly makes it more likely that comparable failures are grouped together.
After a patch, remove temporary launch options one at a time and retest. A workaround that was necessary on August 14 can hide a later improvement or create a new conflict. Preserve the evidence, but let the current build replace launch-day assumptions.
Official updates to check first
Start with the official Steam page, then use its developer announcements to replace any workaround that a newer patch makes obsolete.
