Project Zomboid Military Research Facility Route: Reaching and Clearing the Bunker

Project Zomboid survivor fighting near a rural supply building during heavy rain

The Military Research Facility is not a one-way loot run until you decide to enter the stairwell. The forest approach, surface buildings, and two armories can already consume the daylight and condition needed for the underground. Once you descend thirteen flights to sublevel -13, every bag, wound, light, and tired swing must still travel back up the same usable route.

This expedition route is bounded to Project Zomboid 42.20.2 stable, checked on August 14, 2026. The detailed location reference was revised for 42.19, and the supplied Build 42 route guide documents the same playable complex. Project Zomboid remains in Early Access, so verify roads, doors, zombie distribution, and coordinates against the current map and world seed before risking a long-lived save.

The playable site is the Military Research Facility in Hog Wallow Forest west of Rosewood. It is not Fort Knox. PZwiki currently describes Fort Knox as a separate future location, while the research facility is the deep laboratory that can be entered in Build 42.

Prove the forest route before loading the vehicle

The 42.19 location reference places the facility around 5687 × 12472. Treat that as a versioned navigation aid, not a teleport command. The site is hidden in the large forest west of Rosewood, and the final dirt-road network is intentionally confusing. Several branches end without reaching the compound.

Plan the approach in two passes:

  1. Map pass: mark Rosewood, the westward forest approach, road junctions, the last reliable turn, and the facility coordinate on the current in-game map.
  2. Scout pass: travel light enough to reverse, verify that each junction exists in this save, and place a clear symbol at every confirmed turn and dead end.

Do not assume the printed road is easy to drive. Erosion can fill the dirt route with new growth, and late saves may require clearing trees or abandoning the vehicle farther out. A vehicle that squeezes through on arrival may be trapped after a horde, collision, or bad turn. Park facing the exit before the surface fight, with the driver’s side and road ahead clear.

If the road cannot be proved without consuming the return fuel, daylight, or weapon condition, end the scout. The next attempt starts with a known route instead of adding bunker risk to navigation risk.

Build the expedition around the return climb

The basement is too deep for a surface generator to light it after grid power is gone. The elevator in the surface complex is nonfunctional even when power is available. Your practical route is the controlled stair at the rear, thirteen flights down to the occupied sublevels.

Load for that fact:

  • two independent light sources plus the correct spare batteries;
  • a quiet primary weapon and a reachable backup that do not share the same failure;
  • medical items outside the loot bag, including enough to stop bleeding before a long climb;
  • water and compact food reserved for the return, not consumed casually on the surface;
  • a drop bag for replaceable loot and a stable worn container for the survival kit;
  • tools only for a named obstacle or objective, not an entire workshop carried underground.

Set exit triggers before entering: the spare light is in use, the backup weapon has replaced the primary, treatment stock has been consumed, the return food or water has been opened, or exertion cannot be cleared safely. Any one of those means the remaining floors are now borrowing from the climb out.

Clear the road in sections instead of delivering a horde

The facility and its approach can hold large zombie populations, including soldier zombies. Do not drive through the full road while sounding the horn, firing from the car, or dragging every group to the fence. Clear one junction, pull away from the next group, recover, and move the staging point only after the road behind is quiet.

Keep combat off the narrowest part of the track. A stalled vehicle, body pile, or exhausted survivor in a tree-lined lane has no lateral escape. If a group cannot be separated, reverse to the previous marked opening rather than fighting where the forest chose.

Military clothing and bags can be attractive drops, but changing equipment on the road is part of the fight. Move the item to the drop bag and inspect it later. Wearing an unknown heavy layer immediately can add heat, weight, or a slot conflict before the next group.

Make the surface compound its own completed operation

The surface includes offices, lounges, storage, medical space, a smaller upper office, and armory areas. There is enough useful loot here to justify ending the day without touching the basement.

  1. Open the perimeter route. Clear the vehicle approach and a second on-foot exit before entering the building.
  2. Work from exterior to interior. Remove zombies around doors and windows so a retreat does not meet an unseen group.
  3. Clear room by room. Offices and narrow passages can hide targets behind furniture or doors. Keep the last cleared room behind you.
  4. Locate the infirmary and surface armories. Take treatment or an immediately useful replacement first; leave bulk ammunition and duplicate gear for a separate haul.
  5. Find the rear controlled stair. Do not descend yet. Clear the rooms and hallway feeding that stair, then mark it as the underground boundary.

Confirm the entire usable surface is quiet before setting a cache. Zombies left above can occupy the only return path while you are below. Place water, food, spare light, and a replacement weapon near the stair without blocking movement. This is the turnaround test: if the surface has already consumed the reserve, drive home with the surface loot.

Treat the thirteen flights as a combat floor

The stair sequence between the surface and -13 is not empty transit. It is long, narrow, and the usable connection between the compound and the underground facility. Clear downward in short blocks while preserving an upward lane. Do not allow faster movement to carry the character into an unseen landing.

At each pause:

  • turn and confirm the upward path remains open;
  • listen before crossing the next landing;
  • recover exertion instead of carrying it into another flight;
  • check the primary light and keep the spare separate;
  • move bodies or dropped bags only when they interfere with retreat.

Do not haul surface loot down. The cache belongs above the descent. Arriving at -13 already overburdened turns the first underground room into a forced fight.

Use -13 as the underground beachhead

Sublevel -13 opens through decontamination space into security, a large warehouse, and private residential rooms. It is the best place to establish whether the expedition can operate underground at all.

Clear the decontamination entrance and security area before opening the warehouse. Large storage rooms create many sight lines and tempt the player to sort loot while side doors remain unchecked. Sweep the perimeter, identify the stairs down, and choose one cleared room as the -13 rest point.

The warehouse can require multiple hauling trips. Do not begin those trips during the first descent. Mark valuable containers and take only an item that immediately improves survival: replacement light, treatment, a sound weapon, or compact ammunition for a gun already carried. Bulk stock belongs to a later transport operation after the full return path is known.

The residential rooms can provide small supplies and safer recovery space, but every private room is another door check. Stop searching them when fatigue rises; clearing the route to -14 has more value than completing an apartment inventory.

Cross -14 and -15 by purpose, not by every container

Sublevel -14 is dominated by barracks, locker rooms, bathrooms, laundry space, and long rows of bunks. The repeated layout makes it easy to believe a room is clear because the previous one was. Keep a consistent sweep direction and mark the stairs rather than zigzagging between lockers.

This floor is a gear check. Inspect a useful military container or clothing upgrade only after the room is secured, and compare it against the current load. Do not put on every protective piece. Heat, discomfort, and combat-speed penalties matter more in the long climb than one extra duplicate layer.

Sublevel -15 contains the mess hall, kitchen and food storage, recreation areas, offices, archives, and a large meeting or command space. Use it as a supply audit:

  • replace consumed water or food only if the item is safe and clearly identified;
  • move compact return supplies to the stable kit, not the drop bag;
  • leave bulky kitchen stock marked for another run;
  • recover fully before entering the lab level.

If -15 is the first time you need the spare light or backup weapon, make it the turnaround floor. The most dangerous spaces are still below.

Clear -16 as an airlock problem

Sublevel -16 contains engineering and medical areas, security, an armory, laboratory rooms, kennels, and controlled decontamination access. Airlocks and security doors create narrow commitments. Clear the approach and the room behind the door before pushing into another sealed section.

Do not let the armory rewrite the route. Take ammunition only for a compatible weapon and within the return weight budget. A new gun without tested controls, a loaded magazine, and an escape plan is cargo, not an immediate upgrade.

The laboratory and medical areas are visually dense. Use a light angle that reveals floor-level bodies and door edges, then enter along one wall instead of crossing the center. Keep the decontamination passage as the reference point. If you lose the route back to it, stop looting and retrace markers before opening another room.

The morgue and MRI area sit below the main laboratory route. Treat that descent as a separate branch. It adds another confined return without providing the same broad supply value as the warehouse or armory. Enter only if the core -16 route is quiet and the exit reserve remains intact.

Make -17 and the cave optional

Sublevel -17 contains the deepest utility area and access to a sprawling cave system. The cave leads through multiple barriers toward the “HAVE HOPE” camp, but the current route references do not identify a loot reward that justifies blind exploration of the maze.

If the goal is to say you reached the bottom, use the last security area as a checkpoint, enter only with a proven light reserve, and mark every turn. Do not chase a side passage because it looks like another exit. The facility still requires the return through the underground floors and thirteen-flight stair.

Skip the cave when any of these are true:

  • the second light has already replaced the first;
  • the survivor is carrying a wound that could reopen or slow movement;
  • the route markers to the -16 airlock are incomplete;
  • the primary weapon no longer has a dependable backup;
  • the drop bag is heavy enough to affect the climb.

Reaching -17 and leaving immediately is a successful reconnaissance. The cave can be a later objective with its own loadout and empty loot bag.

The official Build 42 map is much larger than Build 41. Use the live map and versioned coordinate as navigation aids, then mark the unlabelled forest junctions yourself.

Climb out before sorting the haul

The return is the final half of the route. Move the stable kit first and keep the drop bag disposable. At every floor transition, check upward access, light, exertion, and weapon state. Do not stop in a corridor to compare armor statistics.

At -13, decide whether the warehouse loot is worth carrying up thirteen flights now. A better result is often one compact armory or medical haul plus a fully mapped facility. Large storage can be recovered in repeat trips after the road, surface, and stair population have been reduced.

At the surface cache, eat, drink, treat wounds, replace batteries, and listen before opening the exterior route. The compound may have migrated zombies even if it was clear on descent. Reach the parked vehicle on foot with the weapon ready; do not sprint to the driver’s door and discover that the road is occupied.

Diagnose the exact layer that ended the attempt

You cannot find the facility: return to the last confirmed dirt-road junction. Check the current coordinate and map rather than treating every forest branch as progress.

The car cannot reach the gate: erosion or bodies have closed the final road. Establish a new facing-out parking point, clear only what the vehicle needs, and do not exhaust the survivor cutting a highway through the forest.

The surface keeps repopulating during descent attempts: the exterior and approach were not a completed phase. Clear farther from the doors and make a separate surface-only run.

The basement is black despite a generator: surface power does not reach the deep facility. Use independent carried lights and keep their batteries separated.

The route collapses after one valuable pickup: the item exceeded the return budget. Put it in the marked cache or drop bag and restore combat weight before continuing.

The bottom was reached but the survivor died climbing: the expedition used the return reserve to clear optional rooms. On the next attempt, apply the exit trigger at the first consumed backup, not at the first empty container.

The facility is complete for the current run when the forest turns, surface exits, rear stair, floor transitions, and return cache are all marked and repeatable. Clearing every locker or cave dead end is a different task, and it should never be allowed to erase the route that makes those later trips possible.
