Rust Blueprint Fragment Progression: Workbench 2 to Tier 3

Rust workbenches fitted with the 2026 upgrade system

If Workbench Level 2 or Level 3 is unavailable, farming more scrap may not solve it. Current progression separates three jobs: collect the correct Blueprint Fragments, carry the metal recipe home, and spend scrap on research or the tech tree. Confusing those pools is how a group finishes a monument run with plenty of currency but still cannot craft the next bench.

Rust workbenches fitted with the 2026 upgrade system
Workbench progression now combines fragment gates, resource recipes, tech-tree spending, and loot-only bench upgrades.

This route is bounded to PC Rust through the August 6, 2026 Power Trip update. Blueprint Fragments arrived in October 2025, November removed scrap from Workbench 2 and 3 crafting while keeping fragment gates, and May 2026 added loot-only workbench upgrades. Server operators can alter loot tables, so the crafting panel and the generated monument map override fixed community numbers.

Separate the four progression counters

Before leaving base, assign every resource to one counter:

Counter What advances it What it does not replace
Basic Blueprint Fragments Green and blue puzzle rewards, selected monument loot, airdrops, and lower-probability sources The metal recipe for Workbench Level 2
Advanced Blueprint Fragments Hackable crates, advanced monument rewards, and a lower-probability elite-crate roll The metal recipe for Workbench Level 3
Workbench materials Metal Fragments and High Quality Metal Scrap needed to unlock blueprints
Research scrap Road loot, crates, recycling, and other server-appropriate farming The fragment gate itself

Workbench Level 1 remains outside the fragment gate. Use it to establish early weapons and tools while the team prepares a puzzle route. Do not hold every component for a future Tier 3 recipe if that leaves the current runner unable to survive the next card room.

Build Workbench Level 2 from guaranteed progress

Workbench Level 2 needs five Basic Blueprint Fragments. The current community item record also lists the physical recipe as 500 Metal Fragments, 20 High Quality Metal, and those five fragments. Check the craft screen before smelting; custom servers and later balance patches can change the metal portion.

The official fragment rules make puzzle rooms the cleanest planning tool:

  • A green-card puzzle gives one Basic Fragment.
  • A blue-card puzzle places two Basic Fragments beside the red keycard.
  • Chaining a green room into a blue room produces three guaranteed fragments before any chance-based crate roll.

That chain still leaves two fragments. Choose the follow-up by what the run already has:

  1. Another blue reward: the shortest guaranteed finish when the team has a spare fuse and cards.
  2. A medium or large monument sweep: appropriate when the map places a lower-risk monument near the route home.
  3. An airdrop contest: officially supported, but only sensible when the group can hold the drop and exit with the fragments.
  4. Chance sources: military crates, large underwater crates, roadside scientists, or metal detecting can finish the set, but should not be the only plan.

The current community catalog records guaranteed Basic Fragment placements at several monuments, including Ferry Terminal, both Harbors, Radtown, Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch, and Dome, with larger totals at Airfield, Arctic Research Base, Power Plant, Train Yard, Water Treatment Plant, and Underwater Lab. Generated layouts and server rules still matter. Open the loot room and count the items in the current client rather than assuming a monument name guarantees the same route on every server.

Choose a Basic Fragment circuit that has an exit

A route is not complete when the fifth fragment is picked up. It is complete when all five are behind a door the group controls. Plan the return before swiping the first card:

  • Carry only the cards, fuse, radiation protection, healing, and weapon needed for the selected chain.
  • Put one player on the exit angle while another loots. Blueprint Fragments are a visible progression gate, so puzzle exits attract ambushes.
  • Use an external bag and small recovery kit near the route, outside monument building restrictions.
  • Do not recycle or split the set across players without recording who holds each fragment.
  • Craft Workbench Level 2 as soon as the metal recipe and a protected placement are ready. Loose fragments have no benefit once the bench is the objective.

When the fifth fragment never appears, identify whether the failure is spawn state or route state. A recently looted puzzle may need to reset, and nearby players can affect monument refresh behavior. Move to a second guaranteed location rather than camping one empty room indefinitely.

Move from Tier 2 to five Advanced Fragments

Workbench Level 3 needs five Advanced Blueprint Fragments. Its current physical recipe is 1,000 Metal Fragments, 100 High Quality Metal, and the five Advanced Fragments. It is crafted while in range of Workbench Level 2.

Advanced progression changes the risk profile. Facepunch lists guaranteed pairs in hackable crates and points to both Oil Rigs, Underwater Labs, Military Tunnels, Launch Site, Nuclear Missile Silo, Cargo Ship, and the CH47 crate event as the main high-tier areas. A successful guaranteed source gives two at a time; three complete pair rewards cover the five-fragment gate with one spare.

Elite crates are a supplement, not a route promise. The official launch rule and the current community loot record both show a 10% Advanced Fragment chance in an elite crate. A run that opens three elite crates can still return with none. If the group needs certainty, target the guaranteed pair associated with the location or hackable event rather than counting crates.

Launch Site is a useful example of the difference. The current monument record shows two Advanced Fragments in its red-card route plus elite crates. The pair is the planning target; any extra fragment from the elite crates is a bonus. Bring the cards, fuses, radiation protection, and combat supplies for the actual puzzle instead of gearing only for a loot-box sprint.

Use the 20-to-1 conversion only to close the final gap

Twenty Basic Fragments can be converted into one Advanced Fragment. This is a reliable escape from a stalled Tier 3 set, but it is expensive enough to be a fallback rather than the first plan.

Convert when one of these conditions is true:

  • The group has four Advanced Fragments and a large surplus of Basics.
  • The server population makes every high-tier event more expensive than another set of medium-monument runs.
  • A solo player can safely repeat green and blue circuits but cannot reliably hold a hackable crate.

Do not convert early when the team still needs Workbench Level 2, expects a second base, or can contest one guaranteed Advanced pair. One Advanced Fragment made from 20 Basics should close a known gap, not create a new shortage.

Spend scrap after confirming the wipe state

The November 2025 progression update reduced tech-tree and research costs to 15 scrap for Common, 30 for Uncommon, 60 for Rare, and 120 for Very Rare items, while removing scrap from Workbench Level 2 and 3 crafting. Those were official values at that patch boundary, not a guarantee for every August 2026 server.

Before spending, answer two questions:

  1. Did this server wipe blueprints? A map wipe and a blueprint wipe are different events. Open the tech tree and confirm what this character already knows.
  2. Is the target cheaper through research? A found item plus a Research Table may bypass a long branch, while a shared team tech tree may make sequential unlocks more efficient.

Keep the fragment route and unlock route independent. A player carrying the final Advanced pair should return home even if the group has not accumulated the scrap for a desired Tier 3 branch. Losing the fragments to “finish one more recycler run” delays every high-tier craft, not just one blueprint.

Install upgrades for the next job, not for appearance

Facepunch launched nine workbench upgrades in May 2026. They are loot-only, not craftable, and are inserted through the bench inventory. Different upgrades change the bench visually and alter crafting, research, durability, comfort, or range behavior. Because later patches can add or rebalance entries, inspect the item’s live description before replacing an installed upgrade.

Use the next bottleneck to choose among verified effects:

  • Salvage: reduces tech-tree scrap cost. Install it before a planned unlock session, not after the scrap has already been spent.
  • Accelerated: increases speed as items complete in the same batch. Reserve it for long production runs where the batch actually benefits.
  • Efficiency: can create a free bonus item during batch crafting, but the current record excludes explosive and raid-related items. Test it with a low-cost batch before committing rare materials.
  • Recycle Bin: can return part of ingredient costs in raw form. Power Trip changed the upgrade so returned items use their own storage; check that storage before reporting a failed refund.
  • Prototype: can skip normal tech-tree order at doubled cost with a failure risk that consumes resources. Use it only when the skipped branch is worth that explicit gamble.
  • Reinforced, Comfort, Range, or Defensive effects: solve base-defense, recovery, workspace, or armor-production problems rather than raw progression speed.

Keep rare upgrades protected when they are not needed. The official update warns that they are uncommon, and the August patch fixed upgrade loss from destroyed Workbench 2 and 3 corpses in Softcore. A fixed bug is still a reason to verify the dropped bench inventory after destruction, not a reason to leave every spare upgrade installed.

Recover from the common false stalls

  • Workbench 2 recipe is grey: count Basic Fragments, Metal Fragments, and High Quality Metal separately; then verify Workbench 1 range if the current recipe requires it.
  • Workbench 3 recipe is grey: confirm the items are Advanced Fragments, not Basics, and stand within Workbench 2 range.
  • Puzzle room is empty: treat it as a looted or non-reset room and rotate to a second guaranteed source.
  • Elite crates gave nothing: a 10% chance is not a failed mechanic. Switch to a guaranteed pair source.
  • Scrap vanished but no blueprint unlocked: check whether a Prototype upgrade applied a failure roll, then read the tech tree state before spending again.
  • Recycle Bin refund seems missing: open the upgrade’s own storage after the August change.
  • Old guide says workbenches need scrap to craft: that rule predates the November 2025 removal. Trust the current crafting panel.

The progression route is finished when the next bench is placed, protected, and able to craft a verified target item. A loose stack of fragments or an unopened tech tree is not progression by itself. Turn the gate into a working station, then choose the next monument based on what the team still lacks.
