A modular boat that moves in circles or crawls toward the Deep Sea is usually a design failure, not a fuel failure. Rust calculates handling from hull mass, shape, and where thrust is placed. Build the smallest boat that can perform the trip, make the bow read like a bow, and prove steering near shore before loading guns, storage, or a wipe’s best equipment.

This guide covers the PC Naval system at the Power Trip boundary dated August 6, 2026. Modular boats and the Deep Sea launched on February 5, March changed editing, decay, onboard IO, and Deep Sea support, and May increased drag on flat bows. Community servers can alter recipes, event timing, and decay, so use the current building preview, map timer, and helm behavior as final checks.
Define the voyage before placing the station
Every extra block adds health and mass. Decide which of these boats you are building:
- Coastal utility boat: a small hull for transport, fishing, diving, or an oil-rig approach. It needs predictable steering more than armor.
- Deep Sea runner: enough redundancy, fuel, storage, healing, and deck access to enter a timed offshore event and return.
- Combat boat: protected movement lanes, cannon arcs, boarding access, and a plan for slowed movement after hits.
- Mobile workshop: selected electrical, industrial, water, and storage deployables, with mass budget left for actual propulsion.
Do not build all four in one first draft. A tall armored box can carry everything and still be a bad boat. The May update specifically increased drag for flat bows and made boat-shaped designs faster than boxes. Start narrow, prove it, then expand.
Prepare the unlocks and a recoverable build site
The basic construction set is the Boat Building Station, Boat Building Plan, hull or floor pieces, a Steering Wheel, and at least one propulsion method. The current achievement reference places the station, plan, small engine, sails, and wheel behind Workbench Level 2. Confirm each item in the live tech tree before spending scrap.
Place the Boat Building Station in water deep enough to accept the deployable and give the finished hull a clear launch path. Avoid rocks, dock geometry, shallow sandbars, and another player’s building privilege. Keep these supplies outside the active build:
- a low-cost recovery kit;
- extra Low Grade Fuel if engines are planned;
- a hammer and the materials for one correction pass;
- only the cargo needed for the test voyage.
The station creates edit space; it is not a safe storage guarantee. Build near a route you can defend and retrieve after death. If a preview refuses placement, move the station or clear the water before adding more blocks.
Lay out the hull from centerline to bow
Use a centerline that makes the forward direction obvious. Build the minimum continuous hull, then shape a pointed or tapered bow with triangles and low walls instead of presenting a broad flat face to the water. Keep left and right mass roughly balanced.
The current community entity record explains the basic trade: larger blocks add health and mass, while triangle pieces add less of each. Treat those values as design signals, not a universal blueprint. Two layouts with the same total health can handle differently when their mass and propulsion are distributed differently.
Before finishing the shell, walk these routes in edit mode:
- spawn or boarding point to helm;
- helm to engine fuel access;
- helm to anchor;
- interior storage to the exit;
- cannon position to ammunition without crossing another gunner.
A boat that traps its pilot after a collision is not ready. Leave enough deck and doorway clearance for wounded movement, item retrieval, and boarding under pressure.
Place propulsion as a steering system
Sails require no fuel and provide quieter, low-cost thrust. Small Boat Engines provide much stronger controlled thrust but consume Low Grade Fuel. The current community record lists a maximum of ten sails and five small engines, with each engine consuming 24 Low Grade Fuel per minute and holding 500 fuel. Verify live values before calculating a long trip; balance updates or server settings can change them.
Placement matters more than simply adding another engine:
- Align propulsion with the intended forward axis.
- Keep left and right thrust balanced unless a deliberate asymmetric test proves otherwise.
- Move heavy storage and armor toward the center rather than hanging it off one side.
- Use the radial menu to reverse sails or engines when correcting orientation or parking.
- Change one variable per test. If mass, engine count, and hull shape all change together, the cause of improved handling is unknown.
When a boat turns under constant input, power down and inspect symmetry. Check engine orientation first, then uneven mass, then hull collision with the shore or station. Do not burn a full tank trying to steer around a construction error.
Install control and survival parts in dependency order
| Part | Install check | Failure it prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Steering Wheel | Reachable, correct forward view, code set and tested | Theft or a helm that cannot see the bow |
| Anchor | Accessible before docking; drop and raise both verified | Drifting ashore or away from a loot stop |
| Engine or sails | Direction, fuel access, and symmetric response tested | Circling, stranded return, or dead propulsion |
| Ramp or plank | Does not block helm, gun arc, or exit | Failed boarding and trapped crew |
| Cannon | Clear firing lane and ammunition route | Self-obstruction during a naval fight |
The helm has a built-in lock. Set a code before the first cargo load, step away, and have an authorized teammate test it. A boat whose wheel is left open can be stolen even if every storage box is locked.
Regular deployables that work on the Tugboat were supported on player boats at launch. March expanded support for electrical, industrial, and water IO and added snapping. It also explicitly blocked Auto Turrets, SAM Sites, Windmills, CCTV Cameras, Seismic Sensors, Hanging Lights, Door Controllers, and Hoppers at that patch boundary. If a blocked item still refuses placement, it is not evidence that the whole boat is broken.
Finish in edit mode, then run a five-test sea trial
March removed the normal five-minute restriction for rotating and demolishing boat blocks while in edit mode. Use that freedom before leaving shore. Deploy & Edit mode is not available in the Deep Sea, so an unresolved hull error becomes much more expensive offshore.
- Idle test: start or raise propulsion and confirm the boat stays controllable without a steering correction.
- Turn test: make equal left and right turns. A large difference signals asymmetry or obstruction.
- Reverse test: use reversed propulsion and prove the boat can leave a dock without a wide turn.
- Anchor test: stop in open water, drop anchor, wait, then raise it and regain movement.
- Damage-route test: move from helm to healing, fuel, ammunition, and exit while another player occupies the deck.
Return to the station after the first test. Remove dead weight, taper the bow, and correct propulsion before adding rare cargo. The May drag change makes a visible bow a functional upgrade, not decoration.
Enter the Deep Sea only with a return condition
The Deep Sea is an intermittent offshore region reached by sailing toward the map edge in a strong boat. Facepunch describes it as high risk and high reward: construction is disabled, loot does not respawn, and the area opens and closes like a world event. Read the map boundary and timer in the current server; do not rely on a fixed schedule from another wipe.
Set a return condition before crossing:
- fuel reaches the calculated reserve;
- the boat takes a propulsion or helm failure;
- healing falls below the minimum needed for one scientist encounter;
- the event timer no longer leaves a safe exit window;
- cargo reaches the amount the crew can protect on the mainland.
Ghost Ships can hold scientists and hackable crates. Tropical Islands can hold ore, ruins, and loot. Floating Cities are safe havens with vendors, and the May update added modular boat parts to a Floating City vendor as a recovery path. Do not plan the outbound leg around purchasing a part that the crew needs to reach the city in the first place.
March added static Boat Building Stations to Deep Sea islands. Power down near one and use its slight magnetic pull to dock for repairs or modifications. That support is a recovery tool, not permission to ignore a broken design before entering.
Fight naval scientists and boats as moving threats
Naval scientists use different behavior from the older mainland pattern. Official notes describe flanking, coordinated pushes, smoke use, and reactions to sound or recent sightings rather than seeing through walls. March then stopped them seeing through smoke and rebalanced armor protection and incoming damage.
Use cover to break contact instead of holding one predictable doorway. Assign one crew member to helm and one to the threat angle; an unpiloted boat drifts into a second problem. If boarding a Ghost Ship, leave a return route that cannot be blocked by the first defender who goes down.
Cannon hits can reduce a player-built boat’s speed to 30% of maximum after repeated impacts. Treat the first movement penalty as a retreat signal. Continuing to trade until the boat reaches minimum speed turns every later decision into boarding defense.
Conventional gunfire from moving player boats also received speed-scaled aim sway in March. Build cannons and protected arcs for naval combat rather than assuming an AK firing position will remain accurate at full speed.
Prevent decay with helm input, not proximity
The March cleanup doubled the decay delay from 12 to 24 hours and set the following decay duration to 12 hours. Facepunch also clarified the activity detector: a player boat counts as used when it receives Steering Wheel input. Standing on deck, opening storage, or sleeping aboard is not the verified reset action.
End every session with a maintenance readback:
- take the helm and provide actual steering input;
- check fuel and anchor state;
- remove irreplaceable cargo;
- record where and when the boat was left;
- schedule the next helm input well before the server’s displayed decay boundary.
The current community record also warns that a boat left at sea can begin drifting shoreward after a period. Use the anchor and a defensible location, but do not interpret a stationary boat as a non-decaying one.
Repair the build by symptom
- Boat circles: verify propulsion direction and left-right mass before adding power.
- Boat is slow with fuel: taper the bow, reduce flat frontal area, remove unused mass, then retest.
- Station will not place: move to deeper clear water outside blocked building geometry.
- Deployable refuses the deck: compare it with the current blocked-item list and try a supported snapping point.
- Cannot edit offshore: reach a Deep Sea island’s static station or return to a mainland Boat Building Station; free edit mode is not global.
- Boat decayed despite a visit: confirm someone actually used Steering Wheel input within the current server’s delay.
- Deep Sea trip ends without an exit: the failure happened at the planning stage. Next run sets a fuel and timer return point before crossing.
A finished boat is not the largest structure the station accepts. It is a vessel that tracks straight, turns both ways, stops, reverses, protects its helm, reaches the destination with reserve fuel, and can be recovered before decay. Prove those behaviors first; armor and decoration come after seaworthiness.
