Current boundary: this route is for the PC live game through patch 1.4.10.5, dated August 12, 2026. The available Book One story currently reaches the end of Act 4. Funcom has announced the final act for September 22, so any page that calls the launch-era epilogue the permanent end of the story is already out of date.
The safest way through Dune: Awakening is to treat each region Journey as a readiness check. A purple story marker may let you travel north early, but it does not prove that your Cutteray, water loop, vehicle, shield, or refinery can support the objective waiting there. Move when you can reproduce the region’s required material at home, not when you merely touch its border.
Use the Journey log as the route authority
| Stage | What the stage is really testing | Do not leave until |
|---|---|---|
| The Fall of the Proteus | Movement, climbing, scavenging, and the first story transmission | The transmitter cutscene completes and A New Beginning appears |
| A New Beginning | Water, shelter, research, the first Trial, Copper gear, and a Sandbike | You can rebuild a powered shelter and repair or replace the bike |
| Vermillius Gap | Iron, Flour Sand, shields, dew collection, surveying, and maintenance | You have an Iron-capable Cutteray, stable water, and surveyed travel lanes |
| Jabal Eifrit and Hagga Rift | Steel, specialized fabricators, the Buggy, vertical travel, and storm tools | Your base can make Steel and power the specialized workstations |
| Shield Wall and O’odham | Radiation, Aluminum, Spice collection, and the Ornithopter | You can fly, survive irradiated objectives, and replace Aluminum-tier losses |
| The Sheol | Jasmium, Duraluminum, sparse safe ground, and radiation management | You can craft the current mitigation item shown by the Journey |
| Finding the Fremen / Assassin’s Handbook | Eight ordered Trials, social hubs, instanced missions, and the launch epilogue | The final base-return call or current Chapter marker advances |
| Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 | Arrakeen investigation, continued story, new overland sites, and current endgame onboarding | The live Journey has no earlier uncompleted purple step |
Journey names and objective text can change. Patch 1.4.10 renamed some faction steps and fixed several story or contract spawn problems. If this article’s wording differs from your client, the live Journey card wins; use the route here to identify the missing system, not to override the objective in front of you.
Leave the Proteus cave with the story flag, not just the loot
The opening cave is linear, but it contains the first easy-to-miss distinction between exploration and progression. Climb and scavenge until you reach the body seated near the transmitter, then activate that transmitter. Looting the cave and reaching daylight are not the completion test. The proof is the transmission scene followed by A New Beginning in the Journey log.
Once the sandworm sequence begins, run for rock rather than trying to inventory-manage on open sand. Solid ground is your reset point throughout the early game: it breaks the worm exposure loop and gives you time to read the next crafting objective.
Make A New Beginning produce a repeatable survival loop
The long early Journey moves through equipment, a Respawn Beacon, shelter, water extraction, Echoes of the Past, Griffin’s Reach, the Wreck of the Alcyon, and finally a Sandbike. Do not read that list as independent chores. Each item removes a specific failure that would otherwise recur in the next region.
- Respawn Beacon: place it where a death does not force another unprotected desert crossing.
- Sub-Fief Console and shelter: claim enough stable space for a generator, Fabricator, purifier, refinery, and storage before decorating.
- Blood Purifier: convert enemy encounters into water progress. If crafting repeatedly stops on water, the problem is the loop, not the recipe.
- First Trial of Aql: finish the eye-and-cover lesson in Mihna Cave; then return to the region objectives rather than chasing later Trials out of order.
- Moisture-Sealed Caves: open their sealed entrances and search large chests for the Fremen components required by Echoes of the Past. One cave may not contain the full objective.
- Wreck of the Alcyon: bring a Cutteray and empty capacity. The wreck supplies the component lesson that later shipwrecks repeat at higher tiers.
The stage ends with the Sandbike assembly. Crafting parts is not enough: assemble every required module with the welding tool and enter the finished vehicle. Sitting on the bike is the clean completion signal. Before driving north, carry repair materials, water, a spare power source, and the parts needed to place another functional shelter.
Cross into Vermillius Gap without donating your first base
Moving On contains an abandonment objective. Abandoning a claim can expose everything left inside, so empty valuable storage first. Launch-era references describe immediately reclaiming the same structure with a new Sub-Fief Console, but claim behavior is server-sensitive. The low-risk method is to move irreplaceable gear and materials before touching the abandonment control, then verify ownership and permissions on every structure after reclaiming. If the console no longer offers the expected interaction, do not leave the site unsecured.
In Vermillius Gap, solve the bottlenecks in this order:
- Research an Iron-capable Cutteray and refine Iron at the base.
- Build and equip a Holtzman Shield, then verify its activation before entering a camp.
- Use the Handheld Resource Scanner to find Flour Sand; after the Second Trial, the Static Compactor makes collection faster.
- Process Flour Sand into Silicone Blocks instead of stockpiling raw sand with no Chemical Refinery capacity.
- Move water collection from emergency blood harvesting toward a Dew Reaper and Literjon loop at night.
- Survey both halves of the Gap from real elevation, then visit the Journey’s listed stations, tradeposts, wreck, and outpost.
- Repair the Sandbike, repair an item at the Repair Station, and recycle expendable gear only after checking that it is not carrying a rare schematic or module.
If Buried Treasure will not appear, confirm three things before scanning more sand: the Second Trial is complete, the Static Compactor is available, and a sandstorm has recently passed. A tiny yellow scanner return is the signal; a Flour Sand circle is a different resource job.
Turn Jabal Eifrit and Hagga Rift into a Steel workshop
This is the first major infrastructure jump. Iron alone no longer solves the Journey. Mine Carbon in the northern regions with a suitable Cutteray, combine it with Iron and water at the refinery, and use the resulting Steel with Complex Machinery to build the specialized Survival, Vehicle, Weapon, and Garment Fabricators.
Do not build all four workstations into a power-starved room. Place one, check generator capacity and fuel duration, then add the next. A finished fabricator that stays unpowered does not prove readiness. Your useful checkpoint is being able to craft and repair a Steel-tier shield or tool without shutting down water or storage infrastructure.
Hagga Rift adds a vertical navigation problem. Erythrite Crystal is found deep in the Rift and becomes Cobalt Paste after processing with water. Entering and leaving through the western opening is safer than trying to climb the entire wall. For the survey objectives, take a Suspensor Belt, charged power, and extra probes; a probe fired below the valid elevation does not reveal the region.
The related Trials unlock tools that the region Journey expects: the Fifth Trial unlocks the Thumper, the Seventh unlocks the Stilltent, and the Eighth enables the Fremen Deathstill chain. The eight-Trial route keeps those cave tests in order without mixing them into the crafting checklist here.
Enter Shield Wall and O’odham for Aluminum, flight, and radiation
Before moving into the Shield Wall, make a recoverable save state in practical terms: repair the Buggy, bank rare components, refill water, and carry a complete radiation solution. The Journey’s Radiation Mitigation step is not cosmetic. Equip the current Radiation Suit requested by the live card and watch both exposure and suit durability; surviving the first seconds does not mean the route is safe.
Aluminum nodes require a stronger Cutteray than the southern ores. The tier also introduces component bottlenecks such as compressors, Carbide Scraps, Diamondine Dust, and Industrial Pumps. Treat these as location loot, not as ore. If an Aluminum recipe is blocked even though the refinery is full, inspect each non-ingot component and route the matching outpost, testing station, ruin, or merchant.
Airborne! is the decisive gate. Research the live Scout Ornithopter tier, fabricate every hull, chassis, cockpit, engine, generator, and wing part, assemble them, and actually fly. A missing wing or generator can leave a vehicle that looks almost finished but cannot satisfy the objective. Once airborne, survey before farming: the time saved by revealed nodes and landmarks repays the detour immediately.
Treat The Sheol as an extraction run
The Sheol has less safe rock, stronger radiation pressure, and fewer forgiving ground routes. Survey from a high northern formation, mark the Northern Harkonnen Base and Wreck of the Delphis, and plan one entry and one exit before landing. A ground vehicle can cross the region, but an Ornithopter reduces worm exposure between sparse islands.
Jasmium Crystal is collected in irradiated parts of The Sheol and combines with Aluminum and water to make Duraluminum in the appropriate refinery. The Journey’s mitigation check asks for an Iodine Pill. Craft and consume it as instructed; merely carrying the item does not complete the step. Keep the pill and the radiation suit as separate layers of preparation rather than assuming one replaces the other.
Separate the launch epilogue from the current Book One story
After the Eighth Trial and the base-return epilogue, The Assassin’s Handbook sends you through Harko Village, Arrakeen, the Hephaestus, the Water Shippers’ Manor, and Old Carthag. These missions use social-hub travel and private instances. Before entering an instance, repair a Cutteray, charge a Personal Light, bring healing, and leave inventory room for quest items. If an objective says to await a call, return to a powered base and clear any earlier tracked purple step rather than repeatedly re-entering the last dungeon.
Chapter 2 begins with a call that routes through Elara Tuek, Count Fenring, and an Arrakeen investigation. Some older pages still say Chapter 3 is forthcoming; do not use them to decide where the live story ends. Chapter 3 has been live since February 3, 2026 and completes Act 4. Patch 1.4.10.5 is the current official notes boundary used here, while the final Act remains announced for September 22, 2026.
Recover a route that stopped advancing
| What you see | Check next | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| No purple marker after a completion scene | Journey log and tracked objective | Untrack stale side contracts, track the new story card, then return to a base or hub |
| Region Journey will not open | Previous Journey, research spending, and required crafted tier | Complete the visible predecessor instead of forcing the border |
| A contract NPC has no quest | Client/server patch and previous contract in the chain | Update first; 1.4.10 fixed several trainer, faction, and Lost Harvest spawn issues on self-hosted servers |
| Crafted object did not count | Equip, consume, assemble, enter, or interact requirement | Perform the final verb shown on the live Journey card |
| Old guide says the story is over | Current Chapter marker and official patch date | Continue through Chapter 3; do not expect the September final Act before release |
Once the main route hands you into Landsraad and Tier 6 systems, switch to the current 1.4.10 endgame plan. It uses the redesigned mission system rather than the launch-era resource-turn-in loop.
